Video: Jenna’s and Barbara’s advice to Sasha and Malia

Not the first act of kindness they’ve shown to the Obama girls, and much in keeping with the Bush family’s exceptionally gracious transition. The clip’s worth watching, but if you can’t spare the time, at least read their letter. Malia, the oldest, is only 10, which explains the conspicuous omission of “If you support your dad on Afghanistan, try not to let it get you down when the left calls you a chickenhawk for not signing up.”

Totally the sweetest thing ever. What a class act the whole family is. No words.
paustin110 on January 23, 2009 at 9:26 PM
I just made the mistake of following a link to the posting of the video at the Huffington Post. Most of the comments are just sad.

There probably would have been riots.

I thought the letter genuine and touching when I read it the other day. Seeing the video with those lovely family photos and hearing the words expressed by Jenna and Barbara themselves was an added treat. I have a lump in my throat, thinking about what our nation has lost and what has replaced it.

C’mon Benny – have a heart.
This isn’t about Democrat or Republican, or about living in the past. This is about the bond between daughters and their Dad, which I would hope supercedes politics and the hateful rhetoric on every level.
It’s about two classy and considerate young ladies passing the torch to two new junior members of a special and unique club, that we – the public – will not be members of.
I watched it again with my Dad and I sobbed again – this time in his arms, as my husband, my twin brother and my Mom stood nearby – and I am hardly a 7 or 10 year old.

Here you go Kevin. I just checked the links and they look alive. Bush’s speech is in 2 parts. There are other videos on the page too about the events of the day.
Part 1
Part 2
I could swear I’ve heard the girls reading that letter sometime last week, but I can’t remember where. Such a kind and sweet thing for the Barbara and Jenna to do.
I had forgot about Spot. He was the son of Millie, GHWB’s dog. Barbara Bush published a book called Millie’s Book as a literacy fund raiser. That brought back memories.

Gentility is inherent in people of quality. That’s why libs can’t comprehend true graciousness, they’re suspicious of it and attribute it to selfish ulterior motive.
beachgirlusa on January 23, 2009 at 10:24 PM
That reminds me, I’ve got to remember to start calling all those non-military lefties that voted for Uhbama chickenhawks since they aren’t out their fighting their messiah’s war.
The Democrat’s….chickens…are comin’ home…to roost!
18-1 on January 23, 2009 at 10:45 PM
It is funny, I remember when you lefties ran around calling Bush 43 a druggie, and now you’ve chosen an ex-coke fiend for your messiah, ah the irony.
Shouldn’t Obama’s drug dealer be coming out with a book soon? Or was Obama his own dealer?
18-1 on January 23, 2009 at 10:49 PM
I do too. In fact, i wrote a letter to SNL about it. I guess a lot of other people did, too, because they didn’t do it again.
I was in my twenties and a Republican, but as a young girl, i was a “late bloomer”. I could relate to a young girl since I had recently been there myself, only without the media scrutiny. I was enraged at the early treatment of Chelsea, and as fair warning, I’m going to be very pissed if people go after the Obama girls for stupid reasons.
I’ll challenge their dad at every turn, but attacking young girls is filthy.

Sweet and classy.

Start taking notes people… Let’s definitely not have such a hatred for Obama that we attack his children. That was a classy, beautiful statement by two classy, beautiful women.

This is why so much of the Left spent so much time demonizing the much easier target of Dick Cheney. Even they knew Bush was a good guy.
Speedwagon82 on January 24, 2009 at 12:12 AM
That made me cry. What a wonderful loving and kind thing for the Bush girls to do. That is class. The pictures on the video was wonderful also. God Bless the Bush Family. I sure miss him.
sheebe on January 24, 2009 at 12:36 AM
*sob* What a beautiful, moving tribute.
A minor point, but I love how the girls use the word “she” and not “it” to describe the White House.
Benny Shakar:
I pity you. What must it be like to be so filled with hate, so utterly incapable of forgiveness, redemption, or grace? So filled with poison, so consumed by vengeance? So devoid of compassion? So lacking in humanity?

I loved the beginning, when the Barbara and Jenna recalled their grandfather’s inauguration, when they were at the age that Sasha Obama is now. They’ve been in the public eye for a long time, and thus have a pretty good idea about what Malia and Sasha will soon be facing.
Bigfoot on January 24, 2009 at 9:39 AM
Well said. Pity is the only appropriate emotion.
Well, pity – and some amusement at the obvious hypocrisy. The current President is, after all, an admitted coke head. It takes some special silliness to ignore that and bring up college kids – gasp! – drinking before they hit 21.
You really do have to pity him – because any one with a human soul should have been moved by that video. Party politics had exactly zero to do with it.
And for what its worth, the final picture of Barack and his family was also pretty touching and moving.
You see, I can notice and acknowledge that freely. Because I have a soul.
Sad for Benny. Happy for the rest of us.
Godspeed to both families.
Professor Blather on January 24, 2009 at 9:42 AM
I watched this it this morning on NBC, class, no other word for it.
rob verdi on January 24, 2009 at 10:22 AM
A word to Mr. Shakar.
I posted on Think Progress for about 5 minutes and was antagonistic by nature, so let he who is without sin cast the first stone, but your comment was foolish, no other word for it.
rob verdi on January 24, 2009 at 10:24 AM
By the way-”multiple Minor in Possession of Alcohol violations among them” is the biggest load of horse crap and hypocrisy ever used. Teenagers and Booze, what a shocker.
rob verdi on January 24, 2009 at 10:27 AM
That was AWESOME. The exact things that needed to be said.
Spectreman on January 24, 2009 at 10:30 AM
What a shame that this whole family was held hostage by Pelosi and Reid. When are we going to get some balls and say “this is what is real, this is what happened, this is what I believe, so take your shots.”
eaglesdontflock on January 24, 2009 at 12:15 PM
Palin has also shown nothing but class. But all she gets is snarky little snipes from Mr. Passive-Aggressive Blogger.
Blake on January 24, 2009 at 12:36 PM
What a testament to the Bush family.
And in other (snarky) news, Keith Olberdouche and Rachel Madcow called for execution of the Bush family.

Brilliant!

Funny, when I read all your questions to Benny, it all blended into one question in my mind: What must it be like to be a liberal? I think I’ve heard Rush talk about that which is what sparked my memory in the first place.
