Report: Palin’s campaign clothes stashed in trash bags at RNC

Not her fault — she gave them back, as promised — but rather evidence of mismanagement at the RNC. Too bad we didn’t know this sooner; the disposition of the clothes would have made for a honey of a question at that RNC chairman debate a few weeks ago. One possibility: Cut them up into square-foot swatches, frame them individually, and sell them online to the base as relics. You could probably fund the whole midterm campaign from the revenue.
A source close to the issue told NewMajority that the clothes are “in the process” of being donated, and an RNC spokesman corroborated, saying the clothes have indeed been returned from Palin, “inventoried and will be appropriately dispersed to various charities.”…
“Has the party not learned their lesson?” a source who raises significant funds for the party said in response to the news of the undonated clothing. “First they make a colossal mistake of judgment by even agreeing to squander the party’s resources on these clothes and then compound the error by failing to properly dispose of them. If they think donors are going to sit by and simply accept this they are mistaken.”
Supporters of the Alaska governor should worry that the RNC’s stalling lends credence to negative speculation. Did the RNC and campaign spend more than the quoted $180,000 figure? How much was spent on other members of Palin’s family? Perhaps the RNC hopes that stashing the clothes will make the story go away. That is unrealistic; if the governor returns to the national stage, so will any unanswered questions.
That’s from New Majority, the new centrist site started by Palin critic David Frum, so weigh it accordingly. Exit question: Are they actually going to donate the clothes rather than auction them off and donate the proceeds? That seems … stupid.

Obviously I was talking about substance, or lack thereof. I assume you aren’t as stupid as you make yourself out to be. But just in case I assume wrong, here is an example for you:
Couric: What other Supreme Court decisions do you disagree with?
Palin: Well, let’s see. There’s, of course in the great history of America there have been rulings, that’s never going to be absolute consensus by every American. And there are those issues, again, like Roe v. Wade, where I believe are best held on a state level and addressed there. So you know, going through the history of America, there would be others but …
Couric: Can you think of any?
Palin: Well, I could think of … any again, that could be best dealt with on a more local level. Maybe I would take issue with. But, you know, as mayor, and then as governor and even as a vice president, if I’m so privileged to serve, wouldn’t be in a position of changing those things but in supporting the law of the land as it reads today.
LevStrauss on January 23, 2009 at 2:52 PM
Perhaps you would enjoy this one:
“Now, we can’t buy into the notion that for government to serve better, it must always spend more. Reductions we support are a chance to show the true measure in public policy. Simply increasing budgets every year, a common government practice, is no guarantee of success. More often, it’s an incentive to failure. Good public policy is accountable for results, and focused on critical priorities.” Governor Palin, 2009.
No? Didn’t think so. How about using some of the doctored stuff from Gibson, too. Still a hard sell.

MirCat on January 23, 2009 at 3:05 PM
No joke. I feel pretty sure that they could make back all that they spent on them if they auctioned them on ebay.
The RNC, mismanage things? Surely you jest. They have such a great track record of outstanding management in all areas.

It was stupid to buy the clothes in the first place. I thought the Palins always looked fine. I don’t think other members of Gov. Palin’s family got clothes. I saw her brother and parents at campaign headquarters, and they were not wearing new or expensive duds.
funky chicken on January 23, 2009 at 3:12 PM
I see no reason why the clothes should still be there, but at least this proves that she did give them back to the RNC, and not keep them for herself as I’ve heard claimed.
Ryan Gandy on January 23, 2009 at 3:15 PM
In light of $145 million squandered on an inauguration, this is rather insignificant.
drjohn on January 23, 2009 at 3:16 PM
I agree, she didn’t need anything else to look fine, but I think McCain’s people weren’t used to mingling with small town folk. They probably wanted to “urbanize” her. Now I’m still amused thinking about the temporary tattoos that Obama spent big bucks on so his crowd could slap them on their butt cheeks. Gotta love that!
littleguy on January 23, 2009 at 3:18 PM
David Frum is a nitwit.
Captain America on January 23, 2009 at 3:24 PM
I would have LOVED to see the nutroots make fun of the Palin Family for not dressing as rich as the Bidens and Obamas. As usual, the RNC never misses a chance to miss a chance.

The best comments undder the entry at Frum’s blog:
Just_Saying
11:41 AMHard to believe a “conservative site” would dredge up this information if it truly is trying to move the conservative agenda forward. Should be ashamed for bringing it up! Sounds more like a liberal cause of action than a conservative one…
dadai.2
11:40 AMA non-story conflated to hoped for importance by the author… as revealed by the last sentence which is a bit overwrought, brimming with imagined prophetic wisdom. Ah yes, this unanswered question could come back to haunt a future campaign of the Sarah Palin… what happened to the clothes?! right. Our Republican Party does need help.
bethanyshondark
8:40 AMBy conservatives making these comments and publishing these stories, it undercuts liberals doing the same. I hope that this story is a sign that the New Majority does not view Palin as our saviour in 2012 – that would surely be a death blow to the Republican Party.
MarkG555
6:24 AMProps to the writer for surfacing previously unknown information, but — this is today’s featured post? conservatism is going to ‘win again’ by continuing the ridiculous obsession with Sarah Palin’s campaign wardrobe?
I mean really – is the blog post even neccessary?
AprilOrit on January 23, 2009 at 3:30 PM
They should auction the clothes on eBay and put the money in the 2010 coffers. What female Repub supporter out their wouldn’t want one of her dresses as a memento of the “Cuda?”
DL13 on January 23, 2009 at 3:32 PM
What size does she wear? Because seriously, she has these wonderful candy apple red heels that I would buy. Hell, I’d buy them even if they weren’t my size, since I collect shoes anyway.
Eh, chort knows what the RNC is thinking nowadays. Or if anybody is thinking anything period. Every day that goes by, I’m one step closer to leaving the party.
Anna on January 23, 2009 at 3:34 PM
You know, a Sarah Palin Cabbage Patch Doll sold on Ebay for $19,000. I think a Sarah Palin worn dress could get a pretty penny too.
SoulGlo on January 23, 2009 at 3:37 PM
Your quote is pretty good, of course specifics would be nice. Too many times when I hear the current crop of Republicans they usually are only talking about earmarks or minor cuts that end up just being cuts in the the percentage increase of spending by the time the rhetoric is buried, when we should be discussing departments.
But as to your “doctored” comment, would you please inform me where the CGI was used? Are you disputing that those were her words?
Because my main point is any real conservative can answer these questions, let alone someone we expect to carry the conservative banner and be a conservative leader. She seems like she would be fine as a conservative supporter, but as far as having a real grasp of the issues and eloquently stating them I really don’t think there is any “there” there. If you want to look at an up and comer who at least has a good grasp of the issues look at people like Jindal. When you hear the two talk side by side there is no competition, Sarah should just sit back and take notes. Frankly its sexist toward Jindal (complete and utter identity politics) to even consider her to be in near his league.

I don’t think Michelle Obama could squeeze her big butt into Sarah Palin’s clothes.

this doesnt even have anything to do with Palin. The RNC is so incompetent it is embarrassing.
ousoonerfan15 on January 23, 2009 at 3:44 PM
Irrelevant issues covered for irrelevant reasons.
The buzzer goes off…beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.
Christine on January 23, 2009 at 3:51 PM
How is the RNC incompetent? It makes little difference whether they returned the clothes 11/5/08 or in 2009 or whether they are stored in trash bags.
I prepared 8 large trash bags of clothes to give away last June. I took 6 of them in to my local charity in October. The other 2 I will donate sometime in 2009. Big deal.
Blake on January 23, 2009 at 3:51 PM
Oh, wait a minute…It is news worthy; it does show that the RNC hates her as much as the DNC. She is their forced retirement staring them dead in the eye.
You keep on scarin’ the scat outta the ruling elite, Sarah.
Christine on January 23, 2009 at 3:53 PM
Lev, my point is this: I’m pretty sure I can find some Jindal snippets that could make him sound like a simpleton, but why do that? If she wants to run again, she can face all comers and we will see what we will see. I like her for her many reasons, including what she’s done, the positions she takes, and even her manner of speaking. She was just playing a role in the campaign. If Jindal or anyone else is better, that will play out in the long run.
littleguy on January 23, 2009 at 3:59 PM
Like you, she’s got her own taste in clothing — which apparently is why so much of the GOP stuff (which she never asked for but which was thrust upon her by people who should have known better) was never worn.
Maybe if you donate your black leather boots and micro-bikini to her favorite clothing source in Anchorage, AK (“The Closet”), she’ll notice them and maybe your wish will come true. If not, since the store donates unsold items weekly to the SPCA Thrift Store in Anchorage, some poodle can have the honors.

Not to mention the differences in the reporting of the two stories, which makes it even more disgusting.
Vashta.Nerada on January 23, 2009 at 4:11 PM
One possibility: Cut them up into square-foot swatches, frame them individually, and sell them online to the base as relics.
Heh. The only relics the GOP will tolerate are its crusty old candidates. No babes, gays or minorities allowed.

“Lev, my point is this: I’m pretty sure I can find some Jindal snippets that could make him sound like a simpleton, but why do that?”
What I posted were not just snippets, that was her chance in primetime, the big leagues, not some obscure moment that nobody remembers. And more importantly the Supreme Court question wasn’t so much what people will think about her, but what are her conservative roots, too many charlatans since 1994 saying the same old empty talking points and produced nothing but Dem majorities and larger government, if she doesn’t know why she would be appointing strict constructionist judges then that really draws flags from many conservatives, and the comment at the end of her answer is downright scary, reminds me of Bush’s response to eminent domain.

Erick at RedState says that Frum’s story is wrong:
meltenn on January 23, 2009 at 4:35 PM
The quote given to you wasn’t from some speech no one remembers, it was from her State of the State speech she gave last night. It is patently unreasonable for you and others to write off Sarah from a single interview where the deck was so squarely stacked against her. Don’t you know that Couric was fed those questions from the Obama camp, and former Senator Sam Nunn in particular? Do some homework – go out and find a speech or an appearance of Sarah’s that is as bad as the Couric or Gibson interviews. You can’t because none exists. Couric and Gibson are the exceptions and not the rule.
Again, I ask. How many perfect appearances must Sarah make to atone for G.D. Katie Couric? 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000? What will it take?
Nat Hound on January 23, 2009 at 4:38 PM

Palin to her credit was honest.
But she knew the incompetence of the republican party
So she knew they would try to blame her
Even for their own
STUPID MISTAKES..
I am so sorry for the republicans tried to tar and feather her and her entire family for the election loss
Sorry folks it was the republicans falut.
NOT hers..
the republicans abandoned their conservative principles
and allowed wholesale THEFT to run RAMPANT on wallstreet
all the while
Blaming all of their problems on palin
BULL CRAP.
why dont the republicans actually try to enforce
Our borders
Our language
Our laws
not blindly followijng rich aristocrats who just like theives jump of the train before it runs off the cliff..
Sorry but unil i see honesty and integrity in the republican party i will NOT VOTE period..
For both parties are completly CORRUPT
So why should i vote for Corrupt incompetance???
jcila on January 23, 2009 at 5:07 PM
Of course we wouldn’t.
Again I have to ask, where was the oversight here? I’m not sure if $180,000 to clothe seven people is a lot of money given the unconscienable sums of money Obama spent during his campaign (would love to know what it cost to clothe Michelle and the girls — at least in the case of the former, whatever the figure was, it was too much because she looks frumpy pretty damn near all the time). Did someone just turn Gov. Palin loose in Neiman Marcus with a credit card and no spending limit? I doubt that’s the case, for if it were, I suspect the final tally would have been FAR less than $180K, given that the Palins are frugal people. But if it were true, what does that tell us — other than that the bigwigs in the McCain campaign were stupid and careless? And all of this from a man who pledged greater oversight of government spending if he were elected.
Seems to me the more likely scenario is that Palin was sent out to shop with some elitist high up in the campaign who was simply so mortified by her consignment store wardrobe that spending any less than $180K simply would not do.
Sorry, I just don’t buy that this woman is a “shopaholic” like some would suggest. It doesn’t fit with everything else we know about her.
My money is on Nicole Wallace, who I think it is fair to say is probably the one who was behind the whole Wardrobe-gate leak as well. Ah, I just love when women try to destroy each other. It’s so uplifting.
BTW, count me among those who stores clothes destined for Goodwill in garbage bags. Also, count me among those who lets the bag sit for weeks and months before I finally get around to dropping them off too. I guess someone needs to audit me or something. ;)
Oh, and Anna? I’ll fight you for those red shoes! ;)

OK, she looks credible, let’s take her word for it. My goodness.
Nat Hound on January 23, 2009 at 5:08 PM
As another point of interest, the writer has posted exactly one other article, this past Wednesday. What is Frum trying to pull here?
Nat Hound on January 23, 2009 at 5:16 PM
So we have people at the RNC dishing to this puny Frum person for the purpose of trying to cause negative press for Republicans? It’s just laughable imagining the thinking process that goes into such an escapade.
Buddahpundit on January 23, 2009 at 5:22 PM
Frum and his crowd feel a need to keep dishing dirt about Gov Palin in order to convince those who like her that they’re stupid and that the GOP can only be returned to power if we fall in line behind our betters – namely him and the others who have the right education/credentials.
If the article had actually initially stressed the inaction of the RNC he might have a reasonable argument but both the original one and his follow-up clearly made it a Palin problem. He just couldn’t pass up a chance to snark at Palin – like someone else we all know. LOL
katiejane on January 23, 2009 at 6:26 PM
Perhaps when Jindal or whoever you admire gets their Couric love-fest we’ll see how they fare. Personally, my candidate doesn’t have to be perfect. I look at their body of work and I learn something about them. I don’t decide on a few moments of video, and Katie doesn’t think for me. As I said, she was playing a role in the campaign and whatever happened during her time with Katie she wasn’t feeling “welcome”, to say the least. If you’re interested, though here’s her take on what was going on:
Please note she also addresses the ridiculous assertion that she “couldn’t” name a periodical she reads, just in case you’re inclined to bring that up, too. If you decide you just simply can forgive these horrible transgressions, then I guess that’s just the way it is. Meanwhile, she still has my admiration and good will.
littleguy on January 23, 2009 at 6:27 PM
Or they could’ve just dipped them in pig sh*t, loaded ‘em onto Marine One and rained everything down onto the inaugural crowd.
Money well spent.

And this story only proves that Palin was telling the truth

Hey Anna and NoLeftTurn you could tug-of-war for the red shoes. I suggest using the ugly dress Michelle wore to the balls as the rope. I think it might have been made out of Kleenex so maybe that won’t work….

If they give the clothes to charity and that charity such as the Salvation Army gives the clothing to poor, down and out people barely able to make ends meet, then who will be the recipients? I mean, she’s tiny and the clothes came from big name stores.
I’ve never seen a charity case that tiny or that fancily dressed. I also haven’t personally seen her size since sixth grade! :)
Auction them off as no poor person is going to go around in them except until they need cleaning and then they can’t afford the cleaning bill. But, hey, The One is taking us all to the cleaners for a field trip. This is just a refresher course for those of us who endured the Carter debacle.
