It might make the dem primary in 2010 for the seat a lib conservative free for all. More popcorn munching, and if the libs split the primary vote, Gillebrand may wind up the winner. She might even be the more conservative than the GOP nominee for Senate. That would be a bonus. Hope she gives Harry Reid agita like she gave to Peelousi.

I feel the same way. This is going to be sooooooo much fun watching the left of the Dem party collapse. I was reading somewhere where a political analyst said the Republicans should target the Dems in congress, rather than Obama, and he was right on the money. They’re the ones that have been trashing Bush for 8 years, so they’re getting their just desserts. It would be sweet justice to see Charlie Rangel, John Murtha, and the whole lot of ‘em kicked out on their keister. Sweet poetic justice.

U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy criticized Gillibrand as recently as Thursday evening, saying her support of more conservative issues such as gun ownership rights was out of step with most New York Democrats.

Yet another Democrat who feels that a legislator doesn’t support all the voters — just the ones who vote for them.

Still, these days you have to play the hand you’re dealt and we could have done a lot worse. My advice to her (and to Gov. P) is to milk that pro-choice angle for all it’s worth. Most libs care more about abortion than guns anyway.

I find the NYP story statement that Schumer strongly supported her difficult to buy. Gun control, in fact the total disarmament of the American people by fiat, has been Charles Schumer’s trademark issue since he has been a national legislator.

Schumer supported her back in 2006 working with Rahm Emanuel to elect House and Senate Democrats in traditional Red States or Red State areas of Blue States. What Schumer got out of it was the Democrats regaining power in Congress and Chuckie getting to be a committee chairman instead of a back-bencher. But it will be interesting to see how Gillibrand votes now, since Schumer is more sympatico with Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi and their desire to have Congress set the agenda for Obama to sign, while Kirsten’s rabbi in getting elected to the House was Emanuel, whose role now is to make sure the White House calls the shots on U.S. policy, not Reid and Pelosi.

Already Mrs. One Note, Carolyn McCarthy, is whining since Gillibrand supports the Second Amendment.

Roger that JWF and that’s the second thing I’m going to say “Suckers” to my conservative Dem friends if Obama has her reintroduce her failed gun legislation from last year this session. Carolyn McCarthy has three very innocent sounding HRs that would effectively ban all large capacity magazine weapons.

Great news, though. Shifting the democratic party in New York to the left is a good step.

“This doesn’t seem like this is going to be an effective strategy,” she said in a telephone interview after the president’s televised speech Wednesday night.

Gillibrand said Bush failed to convince her that sending additional troops into Iraq would guarantee success.

Gillibrand said she hopes to learn specific information about how Bush intends to implement the strategy when Defense Secretary Robert Gates addresses the House Armed Services Committee today.

Gillibrand, who serves on the committee, said she is prepared to ask pointed questions about how the chances of success will be any different from when the U.S. had higher troop levels in Iraq at an earlier point.

“We’ve had 20,000 more troops in Iraq before,” she said.

Gillibrand, who took office last week, said she does not agree with Bush that democracy in Iraq is destined to collapse if additional troops are not sent in to secure the area around Baghdad.

“I think that’s a false paradigm,” she said.

Gillibrand said she was encouraged to hear Bush call for oil revenues to be shared by various Iraqi factions, a position she took in her congressional campaign.

“I was very interested to hear it,” she said.

But she would have liked Bush to support other diplomatic solutions, such as pledging the United States will place no claim on Iraqi oil and will not have permanent military bases there, she said.

Gillibrand said she agrees with the president’s call for increasing the overall size of the military, particularly the number of special forces.

Veterans benefits must be improved to attract more young people into the military, she said.

U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., said in a prepared statement that Bush’s Iraq policy “has been marred by incompetence and arrogance.”

Clinton said she continues to support phased redeployment of U.S. troops as a way of pressuring the Iraqi government to resolve its political crisis.

“Based on the president’s speech tonight, I cannot support his proposed escalation of the war in Iraq,” she said.
