20 dead in two U.S. missile strikes in Pakistan
posted at 3:23 pm on January 23, 2009 by Allahpundit
A candygram from The One to AQ: No change, no hope.
Security officials said the strikes, which saw up to five missiles slam into houses in separate villages, killed seven “foreigners” – a term that usually means al-Qaeda – but locals also said that three children lost their lives…
Eight people died when missiles hit a compound near Mir Ali, an al-Qaeda hub in Pakistan’s North Waziristan region. Seven more died when hours later two missiles hit a house in Wana, in South Waziristan. Local officials said the target in Wana was a guest house owned by a pro-Taleban tribesman. One said that as well as three children, the tribesman’s relatives were killed in the blast.
“I suspect a high-value target may be among the dead,” a Pakistani official tells WaPo, but Roggio hasn’t heard of any big fish being involved. I could have sworn that I read somewhere a few months back that Bush had expanded Centcom’s discretion to undertake these attacks on its own, without approval from the top, but after searching for half an hour I’ve come up empty. Doesn’t matter: Presumably that rule would have been suspended after Obama was sworn in lest a freelance operation spoil his plans for Pakistan, which in turn means he must have signed off on this one. Smells like a message to the other side that he means business. Mission accomplished.
The left, you’ll be pleased to know, is already starting to kick around “non-military solutions” to the good war in Afghanistan. Exit question: Never mind the drone strikes, which anyone to the right of Dennis Kucinich would have continued. How about reinstating this policy, which Bush set and then quickly un-set after Pakistan complained? And while we’re at it, where do we stand on this?

I thought the plan was that we’d cleverly eliminate Al Qaeda by paying for muslim mothers to have abortions with U.S. tax dollars. I guess The One figured that a little cordite and high explosives still have a role in the process.

Obama lied, people died. Welcome to the Toughest Job on Earth, B.O.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Obama tries to claim that bin Laden was the target.
I’d LOVE to hear the press ask him: If you knew bin Laden’s location, but an airstrike would cause dozens of civilian casualties, would you strike? Instead he gets “I just want to say it again. Mr. President.”

Well, I’m assuming it was high value targets that were being aimed for and that The One (who is now CinC of the armed forces) did indeed give the order to launch an attack in a country that is an “ally” of sorts.
If high value tangos were hit the nto The One I say, “good call”.

I’m having a good chuckle over the thought of Hussein the Baby Killer.
However, if this is a policy to continue, then Hey! So Be It!
Better to kill them than capture them. Afterall, we have to abide by the Army Manual and not talk harshly to the prisoners.
Kini on January 23, 2009 at 3:35 PM
This might not be a big enough incident to cause problems. But sometime in the future — if there is a strike on an al Qaida target where there are either a lot of civilians around who are killed or the attack does miss its target and hits and kills civilians — that’s when you can expect to see a major push by those on the left worried that Obama might be straying off the reservation to bring him back, by really hyping the incident to make Barack change U.S. policy and go the “non-military solutions” route.
It’s one of the tough decisions he hasn’t had to make so far. Other than a few grumbles from the left on his foreign policy appointments, Obama has yet to face the dilemma of either doing what’s unpopular on the left or sticking with the basic policies of the Bush Administration that have prevented any domestic terrorist attacks for almost 7 1/2 years. But decision time is going to come up soon, and you can’t vote present or hope that by the time you’ve finished your waffle the problem will have gone away.

Either way, hope it was a useful score.

If this attack was ordered by President Bush or Israel then the left would be demanding investigations and war criminal prosecutions. Where are they now?
I thought they would hold their messiah to a high standard?
Vegi on January 23, 2009 at 3:53 PM
That’s an excellent question … thousands? millions?
The bigger question in my mind though … did he attack them solely because their skin is brown?
darwin on January 23, 2009 at 3:54 PM
Yeah, I have faith that everyone here is pleased to know that some serious tangos might be dead but I too am curious to see if there’s a double standard from the left when it comes to these sort of things.

I thought the “War on Terror” was over?
I hearken back to Ron Silver’s remark about being “offended” by an Air Force flyover at Bubba’s inauguration (F-16s are sooo militaristic, you know), until he realized, “Oh yeah, those are our planes now.”

I just scanned some of the comments at Huffington and you are right.
A representative sample:
How many civilians did Obama kill in the process?
No we totally understand. We just don’t understand why Obama is illegaly targeting civillians.
That’s funny. This is what Bush was doing and you were all against it.
Apparently anyone who though Obomba was a peacekeeper was deluded. The killing continues by the United States.
Pakistan didn’t attack the USA
Obama has the blood of innocent people on his hands
4 Days in already and he’s attacking Pakistan. Oy vey
Those of you who want to indict Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc. for “war crimes” had better add Obama’s name to that indictment!
This, for me, erases quite a bit of the goodwill we received from the announcement of the closing of GITMO yesterday.

Isn’t it AMAZING how now we are bombing Al Qaeda strongholds, while all throughout the Bush years, we were bombing generic Afghanistan and Pakistan?
Speedwagon82 on January 23, 2009 at 4:09 PM
You have to admit that it’s a nice change of pace to have America attack the right country for a change.
Vernon Hardapple on January 23, 2009 at 4:10 PM
Those are your people…
So here are the important questions:
Why didn’t he give peace a chance?
Why how many innocent people did he kill?
How many children did he target?
How many more terrorists are taking up arms because of this?
How many more civilians will become terrorists?
Pakistan has never attacked the U.S., why attack them?
Why did he lie about using peaceful talks to resolve problems?
Why did he rely on what could have been Bush’s faulty information?

Then there will be an announcement that it wasn’t a US strike, but one by the Pakistani government.
Has anyone asked The Obama administration about these air strikes yet?
