Video: No stimulus money for white males

posted at 8:58 am on January 22, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Wasn’t this supposed the era of post-racialism? Robert Reich apparently didn’t get that message. In his appearance before Congress on structuring the stimulus plan on January 7th, Reich suggested that the package discriminate against white male workers:

I am concerned, as I’m sure many of you are, that these jobs not simply go to high-skilled people who are already professionals or to white male construction workers.  … I have nothing against white male construction workers.  I’m just saying that there are a lot of other people who have needs as well. … Criteria can be set so that the money does go to others, the long term unemployed minorities, women, people who are not necessarily construction workers or high-skilled professionals.

Basically, Reich wants Congress to create some means testing that doesn’t explicitly keep stimulus funds from paying the salaries of white males.  He suggests that the lawmakers create “criteria” that will have that effect in practice without being crass enough to say, No Whites Need Apply.  Congress has done this in milder form for the last few decades by mandating set-asides for women- and minority-owned businesses in government contracts, but even those don’t require the businesses to refuse to hire white male construction workers.

This sounds a lot more like a paternalistic welfare program than a real effort to improve American infrastructure.  We’re building roads and bridges for all Americans, using tax money from all Americans.  Everyone should have equal access to the jobs created by this stimulus plan.  What Reich proposes is flat-out official racism by government, refusing to hire people on the basis of their skin color.  Didn’t our last election demonstrate a rejection of that kind of thinking?  And note that Reich offers the racist rationalization that he doesn’t have anything against white male construction workers.  Maybe some of his best friends are white male construction workers, too.

Sort of like Southern Rhodesia, eh? Since that has worked out sooooo well for that country. But, of course, it is Ian Smith, a man who oversaw Southern Rhodesia serve as the breadbasket of Africa, yet because of political correctness and white guilt he is considered the bad guy…

I’m saying that the top 1% of earners have seen their share of U.S. wealth grow under Bush

Yes, and tax revenues the IRS was able to collect rose dramatically as a result. The rich pay all the taxes, and if they make more, the government gets more. Duh.

at the same time we’ve seen our national debt grow to the point where it’s actually threatening the value of our dollar.

Good point. And I hate how much irresponsible and incredibly ineffective spending Bush authorized in the last four months of his time in office.

I have a great idea! Let’s quadruple the deficit!!! Thank you Mr. Obama and the Democrat leadership in Congress!

We had tax cuts while we paid for a 100 billion dollar war!

Do I need to point out again that the tax cuts resulted in demonstrably increased revenues? And do I need to point out that Obama’s planned trillion-dollar stimulus package will cost ten times the cost of the war and according to the CBO will not impact the current recession AT ALL?

And do I need to point out that Obama will raise taxes during a recession, thereby decreasing revenues? I’m guessing I do have to point those things out since you seem woefully ignorant about such things.

It’s mind boggingly stupid.

Yes. Yes it is. But I’m pretty sure we’re not referring to the same things.

And now the right has the audacity to fix their mouth and complain that government might be reversing who benefits from government spending.

Its the same people benefiting as it has been for many decades, just in slightly different proportions.

Because expanding the debt IS government spending (not sure why the right refuses to accept that).

Oh, we understand that far better than you do. The interest payments alone on a trillion-dollar debt is quite frankly unpayable.

This is why your hope for a true “free market” conservative politician is a futile one, your ideology has been exposed.

The free market has not been allowed to work, so it can’t have been “exposed.” It was government intervention in lending practices that created the bubble that burst and put us in this latest crisis.

Remember when tax cuts would lead to more revenue for the federal government….yeah, not so much.

They still would. They are the ONLY proven method of increasing revenue, and the only sensible way of “stimulating” the economy. But only if they are real and permanent and reward the producers of our economy. Concepts that are anathema to the Dems, so I don’t expect it to happen.

I doubt the Obama Administration is foolish enough to go ahead with something like this, even protected by subtle euphemisms. The hardcore Obamabots are only a small part of his electorate, and all those blue-collar middle class swing voters would become very, very angry if their vote for racial harmony was thrown in their faces by a blatant racial spoils system, tied to the very financial crisis that spooked them into voting for Hopenchange. That would make them feel stupid, especially this early in the new administration, and the last thing a socialist government needs is an incipient tax revolt brewing. The trick to successful socialism is making the programs seem reasonable until after the bills come due.

I think it’s more likely that Obama will be forced into passing some measure that weakens racial preferences, somewhere down the line, much as Clinton was pushed into signing welfare reform. Just as Bush’s success in the War on Terror vaporized it as a major issue for the voters, and made it possible for them to support someone they would have laughed at in November of 2001, so Obama’s perceived improvements in race relations – secured by the very fact of his election – will make a sizable chunk of the electorate wonder why we can’t start peeling back some of those affirmative action policies. All of the people that voted against Obama, and quite a few of the people that voted for him, will be ready to go ballistic at the first sign that he’s turning into Jesse Jackson, just as Clinton had to do all that “triangulation” to avoid being dismissed as Michael Dukakis.

Besides, the Democrat machine doesn’t really need hardcore racial preference programs to hold its base together any more, just as they didn’t really need welfare any more in the 90s. What percentage of the minority vote would Obama lose by making some gesture against affirmative action programs in 2011? .00001%? And how much of the white middle class vote would he gain from such “triangulation?”

Doctor Zero on January 22, 2009 at 1:38 PM

Their aim is to destroy the middle class, you know those of us who are working and carrying their load. Quitting work and getting on their welfare is exactly what they want us to do. Tax revolt sounds better to me. The white strong male is their biggest nightmare. You’ve been targeted for a while now. Think about all the advertisements and sitcoms that paint the white mail as an idiot.

When little Bobby Reich was a boy he wanted to be a white construction worker when he grew up but he never grew up.

Cheshire Cat on January 22, 2009 at 1:53 PM

From the first time I went in to ask for a job and the guy behind the desk told me “I can’t hire You, I want too, but there’s no way” it didn’t take too many tries to figure out that options were limited.
Its positive racism or social justice.

Theories of justice which demand that people be rewarded according to their differential desert or merit are probably more familiar to sociologists. If justice consists in giving people their due, and those dues are different, then justice seems clearly to require unequal outcomes. However, this approach to justice does then raise the question of what it is that constitutes the bases of desert or merit, and which qualities of individuals it is just to reward.

And its disgusting to all reasonable people.

If I wanted to work for minimum wage or non union or non government jobs, anything that wasn’t higher paying or had good benefits, no problem. After Reagan, quotas, supposedly went away (not really) it got better, for awhile, now that CarterII is in office, quotas R us is back.

Its the same old, same old, liberal, crap.
Its political correctness on steroids, as if it wasn’t killing us off fast enough already.
Its not going to go away, its only going to get worse.

Maybe Turbo Tax can have a box to check that says: taxes withheld pending petition for redress of grievances.

I know, but 300 white guys standing outside the offices demanding their right to at least apply would be hilarious way to bring a spotlight the inherent discrimination in the system. Ugh, please lay down the free market ideology, it’s just been proven 100% bankrupt this year.

Considering we have not had “free markets” in well over 100 years, your asinine assertion is false and, therefore, your intellect is 100% bankrupt.

The Federal Reserve, Treasury, and the Craven Criminals on Capitol Hill caused this “financial crisis” together.

Of course, now the geniuses are cooking up a plan to make it worse in order to continue lining the pockets of their politically-favored Wall Street Whores and other special interests (as well as their own) and call it a “rescue package”, and at the same time further increase government and government control over our lives.

The Road to Serfdom

What F.A. Hayek saw, and what most all his contemporaries missed, was that every step away from the free market and toward government planning represented a compromise of human freedom generally and a step toward a form of dictatorship–and this is true in all times and places. He demonstrated this against every claim that government control was really only a means of increasing social well-being. Hayek said that government planning would make society less liveable, more brutal, more despotic. Socialism in all its forms is contrary to freedom.

JiangxiDad on January 22, 2009 at 4:28 PM

People throw around the term “political realignment” a lot, but I think the last election was not such a realignment, but rather the prelude to one. The sides are indeed drawn, and now we get to see who joins up with each side. Realignments aren’t a result of one party winning a lot of seats in the government – they’re measured by how the votes are cast in the next election.

We had a significant realignment leading up to the 2006 election, based on scurrilous behavior from the Republicans, including that fabled drunken-sailor spending, and various weird unforced errors like the Mark Foley and George Allen kerfuffles. Coupled with weak politics from the leadership, including Bush, it led to a sizable number of voters wandering over to the other side. I don’t think it was a major realignment, on the scale of the tectonic shifts that brought in Reagan or the ill-starred Gingrich Congress, because somehow the Risen Christ only managed to eke out 52% of the vote, running against a boring candidate with weak support from within his own base, and bolstered by the effect of a financial crisis that his party was (remarkably) able to twist to their advantage.

Soon the voters will begin dividng themselves into teams for the 2010 dodgeball championships, the midterm elections. Realignments come when sizable chunks of the electorate begin to seriously question where they stand on the political spectrum. Reagan’s big break was the massive shift of blue-collar whites toward the Republicans, after they found themselves completely alienated from the Democrats. It wasn’t a single vote, or a single misbegotten bill, that moved them – it was the crushing sense of accumulating hostility and neglect from the Carter Democrats, coupled with the remarkable sense of incompetence radiating from the Carter Administration. Likewise, the voters of 2009-2010 aren’t going to get into squabbles about the exact wording of a particular bill, or the precise percentage of a tax shift. Instead, they will respond to the overall atmosphere of the parties, the collective sense of how well they feel represented. A season of prominent Democrat politicians and advisors musing about locking middle-class whites out of the stimulus bills they’re paying for will do wonders to get that entire segment of the electorate thinking about how they felt great about themselves when they elected the first black president, but they don’t feel any compelling urge to re-elect him.

Doctor Zero on January 22, 2009 at 5:23 PM

What Reich proposes is flat-out official racism by government, refusing to hire people on the basis of their skin color. Didn’t our last election demonstrate a rejection of that kind of thinking?

No Ed, the last election wasn’t a rejection of that kind of thinking. In fact, Obama was elected because of his skin color. A white person with no qualifications, no experience, and no accomplishments would have never been able to be elected President. 100′s of 1000′s of people voted for him because he is considered black, based solely on his DNA. It became clear during the democratic primary when issues were not debated and instead it became a contest of identity. Obama said it best during a debate when he claimed the Democratic party was the best because “we have an African American, a woman, and John.” If anything, the last election has shown an increase in this kind of thinking. The idea that only blacks can represent blacks, that only women can represent women. That DNA is more important than ideas. You, yourself, have spoken about the identity politics in the Democratic party, have you forgotten?

I have paid all my life for my ancestors and I don’t owe blacks a damn thing. I am also hearing of white supremecy alerts and all that crap. I detect an avalanche of white bashing to come. Ya’ll got the Whitehouse, now get on with doing what you say Bush couldn’t do. You’ll see Bush kicked ass when called upon. Libs can’t handle that.

Here’s my offer, MidgetMan…you and your family can drive your Volt over the bridge built by multi-cultural morons and I’ll take my Dodge Ram over the bridge built by the skilled white guys.

Great, Bilbo Baggins is back speaking on our economy again?

Ah, yet another victory for MLK Jr. Wait, he did want us judging people on the color of their skin, not on the content of their character, right? Oh wait…

RightWinged on January 22, 2009 at 7:51 PM

I’d love to tell my white husband to not work at the hospital, along with the rest of the ER, white nursing staff, heart surgeons, etc. etc…

This Latina believes this to be incredibly unfair; especially when I have the hunch that there will be NO JOBS for minorities like me. PS: I AM NOT MEXICAN!!!!

ProudPalinFan on January 22, 2009 at 6:23 PM

I haven’t told my (white) husband about this yet, because I KNOW what his reaction will be.

This is wrong. So. Very. Wrong!

P.S. If you’re not Mexican (and neither am I), where are you from? I’m Puerto Rican.

Obama’s chances of making it through his first term…………………. fading.

Bikerken on January 22, 2009 at 8:40 PM

This guy is a moron.

If he is such a genius, why didn’t hi see the meltdown before it happened. He isn’t going to help fix the problems of shorten the time it takes to get through it. He will exacerbate the problem and cause it to be drawn out much longer than it would if he just STFU and disappeared.

This man is a disgrace.

Period.

This has probably been said already; (I’m not reading all the comments…. sorry)

But what troubles me more than barring white males from these construction jobs is barring skilled workers of any kind.

I’m sure not looking forward to driving across any bridges built by a completely incompetent, unskilled crew of people hired only because of race or lacking of a Y chromosome.

This is also part of the Class Warfare ploy that the Democrats have become famous for.

DL13 on January 22, 2009 at 7:08 PM

Well, when the Republicans decided to sell out to foreign interests over Main Street, they lost all credibility on calling that one.

Look at how firms like Cohen & Grigsby are when they try to use legal trickery to exclude all citizens and what happens in their wake. You get shoddy products that citizens have to fix anyway.

The last time the gov’t did something like this was with the freeing up of money to lend to “others” to buy houses. Look how well that worked.

How dare you sir? Casting slurs against the esteemed Bilbo.

I suggest to you, that if you must compare Reich to any Baggins, that you select one that he is closer to in character:

Lotho Sackville-Baggins

Do the dems feel the courts are so corrupt that this will stand?

diogenes on January 22, 2009 at 10:45 PM

Mark my words, more than half the dems who voted for this extreme racist marxist will be wanting to see his whole administration burning in hell within a few short months. It’s only been two days now, and I’m already hearing a lot of buyers remorse.

American doesn’t need to be “REMADE”.
