Video: No stimulus money for white males

posted at 8:58 am on January 22, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Wasn’t this supposed the era of post-racialism? Robert Reich apparently didn’t get that message. In his appearance before Congress on structuring the stimulus plan on January 7th, Reich suggested that the package discriminate against white male workers:

I am concerned, as I’m sure many of you are, that these jobs not simply go to high-skilled people who are already professionals or to white male construction workers.  … I have nothing against white male construction workers.  I’m just saying that there are a lot of other people who have needs as well. … Criteria can be set so that the money does go to others, the long term unemployed minorities, women, people who are not necessarily construction workers or high-skilled professionals.

Basically, Reich wants Congress to create some means testing that doesn’t explicitly keep stimulus funds from paying the salaries of white males.  He suggests that the lawmakers create “criteria” that will have that effect in practice without being crass enough to say, No Whites Need Apply.  Congress has done this in milder form for the last few decades by mandating set-asides for women- and minority-owned businesses in government contracts, but even those don’t require the businesses to refuse to hire white male construction workers.

This sounds a lot more like a paternalistic welfare program than a real effort to improve American infrastructure.  We’re building roads and bridges for all Americans, using tax money from all Americans.  Everyone should have equal access to the jobs created by this stimulus plan.  What Reich proposes is flat-out official racism by government, refusing to hire people on the basis of their skin color.  Didn’t our last election demonstrate a rejection of that kind of thinking?  And note that Reich offers the racist rationalization that he doesn’t have anything against white male construction workers.  Maybe some of his best friends are white male construction workers, too.

OK, now I think we’re in fever-swamp territory….

We started this thread talking about identity politics and welfare payments. Remember?

I like the idea of a “National Day Without A White Man.” It points up the foolishness of identity politics quite nicely. It also might make enough of an economic impact to get Congress’s intention.

But although I am one of the original minions of the vast right-wing conspiracy, even I don’t think the O-bots are intrested in eugenics….

Here we go. It looks like we are running full speed to another civil war. To take money from the producers and give it to the trough sloping dead beats will just create more dead beats.

These Washington egg heads need to be tarred and feathered. Incredible. Stupid. Misguided.

Why do they want to destroy this country?

Same. Paid a whopper of a fine. Now have bought it, and a few other important books for my children to own, in case the libraries of the future decide no longer to carry it. I have seen how “disagreeable” stuff is disappeared down the cyberhole as if it never existed. Get your hardcopies now.

Might as well kill two birds with one stone. You can take on the feminists too and free many women and others by adding “and those who love them” to the name.

I hear ya, this thread has become a sounding board for possible things to do when the time comes and I’m seeing some good ideas.

I just wonder how much can actually be implemented before the violence starts to hit. From all the evidence, there seem to be quite a few deluded people who are expecting all their problems to disappear, and when it doesn’t happen, it’s going to get ugly.

I actually put an extra handgun in my truck yesterday, beyond the one I normally carry; the creepiness factor is large here in the Twin Cities, especially in some of the hoods I frequent.

I can do my library stuff online, and can renew up to two times, the problem is that Atlas is on a perpetual four person waiting list and so you can’t renew or have someone else check it out. Three weeks, thats it, and if you can’t make the deadline you go to the back of the line and wait again.

Perhaps, but given sufficient demonstration of the power of those opposed to their goals, their demands will be scaled back. I think there is a sense that the whites and conservatives and republicans and christians are on the ropes, unable to ever again demonstrate power. I think that perception is wrong, and ought to be corrected. In no area is it more wrong than in the productive economy.

I don’t know, you hear what these people are expecting and it’s scary: free housing provided, cars paid-off, free tuition, on demand everything just by invoking the name Ogabe and making sure everyone knows they’re black.

Seeing what happened in November and now the reaction of the crowds, the slobbering press, the steps Ogabe is already taking to hinder the U.S., my faith is slipping.

Pretty good time to get started. Joe Sixpack taxpayer is feeling pretty isolated and vulnerable right now. Something to bind us together into a coherent voice would be received well. The economic uncertainties do not only present the Left with opportunities. That would be a crucial error to make.

JiangxiDad on January 22, 2009 at 11:06 AM

How about a day without whites? Gandhi did it and it shook the British. How about a week without white males, or two?

JiangxiDad on January 22, 2009 at 9:16 AM

I’ve often thought about that. Why limit it to men. How about all white people. The major problem I see is that when we white business owners “strike” I frigging guarantee that the ACLU, LULAC or someone will sue us for “disenfranchising” the people who depend on us.

Also, I love the income tax idea. Hey, if you file by April 15th but don’t pay until October 15th sure you will get an interest penalty but those are relatively small compared to failure to file penalties. Trust me. I do it practically every year for lack of funds :).

Seems like many people like the idea of a day of national protest by those who feel ignored. Many of these people are very productive citizens whose absence from work will have tangible results. Done on a large enough scale, there is no practical way for the government to ignore it, or fight back.

The IRS can’t put everyone in jail. They would rather collect fees, penalties and settlements. Those can be dragged out, too. They also don’t have the manpower to go after everyone at once. And…. if everyone starts bitching about the IRS, they will probably have to lay off a bit especially in an economic downturn.

That brings me to another point. Tax revenues are down because of the economy. Further reducing revenues with a quiet ‘strike’ will really alarm the government.

Heck, at that point Rangel might have to chip in his share – or maybe Sharpton! lol

And if you need more firepower, withdrawing money from banks, en masse, would bring them to their knees. I would love to see a new set of banks started that conservatives used almost exclusively. This is very much of a long-shot idea, though it really doesn’t have to be, but the power that would be wielded would be immense. The drain on the current system would stop Washington dead in its tracks.

JohnTant on January 22, 2009 at 9:14 AM

IT WOULDN’T pass. Neither would Reich’s intents if put into effect not be offenses of the Civil Rights Act and probably a whole lot more.

It seems to the Left, Civil Rights are only applicable to “everyone but White people”. This (Reich’s insane remark here) isn’t the first time I’ve heard this, however, and Reich having said this, even if it remains stagnant legislatively, will certainly now percolate throughout certain groups and can be relied on to gather a lot of additional mud as it rolls around in the minds of some. The outcome will be exactly what Reich is here advocating.

The big banks are all insolvent. They don’t exist without gov’t bailouts and FDIC insurance for depositors.

Many of the state governments are bankrupt. They don’t exist without huge tax increases, budget cuts or bailouts from Washington.

The federal gov’t seems to be bankrupt. It seems our central bank is printing vast amounts of currency, and then loaning it to the Treasury Dep’t so that the gov’t can pay it’s bills. The Federal Reserve is directly buying US gov’t debt by printing. It seems like some sort of scam. To me, it is evidence of bankruptcy.

The dollar remains relatively strong, because it is still perceived as better than alternatives, but this situation can’t stay this way for long. China is already extremely nervous about holding treasuries. There may indeed be a tipping point coming when the desire for dollars has reached its maximum, and everyone tries to unload them at once. It will be a race to the exits.

Why do they want to destroy this country?

saiga on January 22, 2009 at 10:46 AM

Because they want socialism. They want to be able to take what they want, when they want it without all the complications of individual rights. In other words, they want us all to be slaves and they want to be the absolute masters. It’s all about greed and power and they want absolute control, all the power and all the money.

Ultimately, that is what a socialistic system is.

The Democrats have been working toward this goal for a very long time, at least fifty years and now they can see their collective dream on the horizon.

Any Questions?

If Reich really wants more minorities in the construction trades, he should argue for the repeal of Davis-Bacon and the minimum wage. Both of which have the effect (and arguable the intent) of keeping minorities from competing with union labor.

In short, the economic stimulus plan should include sections of the economy that are not merely dominated by construction work, which tends to be for white men. I notice no one here seems to notice that part of his argument is that women are not really a part of these infrastructure projects (including white women). But if we actually thought his argument through we wouldn’t be able to return to that old conservative calling card, making white men into victims. It’s what made Reagan popular in the 80s, Limbaugh a success in the 90s and it seems the same folks are going to try the same tactics again this time. We’ll see if it works. Luckily, white women have really come to their senses in the last few elections cycles and started to recognize that hey, maybe we’re a constituency too.

Is there some reason Reich has the microphone jammed up his schnoz?

12thMonkey on January 22, 2009 at 12:23 PM

Lets try it this way and see how it plays out:

or to black male construction workers… I have nothing against black male construction workers. I’m just saying that there are a lot of other people who have needs as well.

Also acceptable. The message is that the stimulus plan should be democratized, I agree. I think that the issue of gender is more important than the issue of race, construction is pretty diversified in big cities at least. Small, scary, “real” America…well less so. But either way his point is totally valid. It’s unreal to me. Between this and the Lowery Benedicition I have never seen former critics of political correctness howl foul with such shrillness over innocuous comments. Get it together conservatives, you’re kind of embarassing yourselves.

Bottom line,..the “stimulus” is really all about wealth redistribution and more affirmative action programs, not making things better for everyone. You’re straining to avoid that conclusion.

Um, am I going crazy or isn’t there already a federal government hiring preference for minority own contractors? What the blankety blank is this guy talking about?

I’ve decided that I’m just going to start sending out pink slips to idiots who deserved to be fired. Reich is fired. He will receive his pink slip in the mail shortly.

The intellectual dishonesty on display in Ed’s post and in these comments is sickening, you people really need some hobbies.

Thanking God every day I’m not you, is that a hobby?

Of course it’s about a redistribution of wealth and its about time. Have you not noticed the ballooning national debt while we’ve given the wealthy massive tax cuts. That’s a redistribution of wealthy upwards. Wages have not risen substantially under Bush despite the most friendly tax environment in American history. The share of the nations wealth controlled by the top 1% has increased dramatically in those years. We’ve had upwards distributionism, now it’s time for it to move in reverse a bit.

Bishop,

Fleeing to the South? Ah… I’ve got some bad news for you. But I can see your point about Minnesota. As bad as it is here in Florida, Minnesota is much further along in Khmer Rougization.

Beagle on January 22, 2009 at 12:00 PM

I have some bad news too. I live in a part of Florida that might as well be southern Alabama and the anti-”Eurocentric” schools crowd are starting to have an impact. I have an elementary student whose school made sure she knew all about MLK and spent the entire week before the holiday weekend celebrating with MLK videos, coloring pages, and story books. However, last year before President’s Day, she brought home nothing about George Washington. When I showed her a dollar bill and asked her who he was, she had no idea. When I asked her teacher about it, she told me they don’t like to focus on Geo. Washington because he was a slave owner and treating him as a hero is offensive to the black students. The first President of our country is too offensive for President’s Day.

Yes, I’m deeply concerned that buildings in which I may have to go should not be built by highly skilled white construction workers. I, for one, feel much safer sitting in buildings built by largely unskilled minorities who have, for one reason or another, been unable to hold jobs. For God’s sake, people, if you’re going to take my money to pay for pointless construction projects, at least have the decency to hire the grossly unqualified!

morganfrost on January 22, 2009 at 12:48 PM

Of course it’s about a redistribution of wealth and its about time. Have you not noticed the ballooning national debt while we’ve given the wealthy massive tax cuts.

Cutting the top rate from 39.6% to 36%. The same rate that it was when CLinton came into office.

Now that’s a big tax cut. I can feel the money flowing out of my pocket as we speak.

The wealth are getting wealthy for one reason, and it has nothing to do with tax policy. It’s because they work.

Those who are poor, are poor because they won’t work.

Well I can tell you one thing, the retaking won’t originate in the north, it’s too frackin’ cold and with high taxes there is nothing to be gained by staying here.

I still say there will be skillz drain to the south from the north.

Um wealthy people are working harder than they ever have in human history? Because that’s the only way you could explain how the percentage of overall wealth they control has ballooned over the last 8 years. And poor people don’t work? I just….don’t have words for you. In one breath you no doubt would call John Kerry and elitist for ordering an arugula salad in the next breath you claim that the millions of working class Americans, many of whom need 2 jobs to make ends meet, are sitting on their asses? How can a class of Americans who are working more hours for less pay than they ever have be described as “lazy.” Ugh, please lay down the free market ideology, it’s just been proven 100% bankrupt this year.

Just out of curiousity, define “wealthy” for me.
aero on January 22, 2009 at 12:49 PM

Must I? Because I know what you’re going to say. “Sure some people may make 250,000 bucks a year, but someone else is make 12 million dollars a year, how can you call those people wealthy in the same way?” Well I’m not saying that. I’m saying that the top 1% of earners have seen their share of U.S. wealth grow under Bush at the same time we’ve seen our national debt grow to the point where it’s actually threatening the value of our dollar. We had tax cuts while we paid for a 100 billion dollar war! It’s mind boggingly stupid. And now the right has the audacity to fix their mouth and complain that government might be reversing who benefits from government spending. Because expanding the debt IS government spending (not sure why the right refuses to accept that). This is why your hope for a true “free market” conservative politician is a futile one, your ideology has been exposed. Remember when tax cuts would lead to more revenue for the federal government….yeah, not so much.

We will definitely need our own Kucinich to offer articles of impeachment on a frequent basis.

The media will have to report it and it might be the only way to force the media to report things that are unflattering to their messiah.

As opposed to that wonderful success that was the Soviet Union or China under Mao. Of course, when you murder millions and imprison even more, the unemployment rate is low–but then again, you life is so f$#@ing miserable you don’t care anyway.
