McCain on Palin: We’re very close, I think the world of her

posted at 8:14 pm on January 22, 2009 by Allahpundit

Every time I think we’re getting closer to the fabled, elusive, 10,000-comment “McCain rips Palin” post, he goes and says something like this.

I hope for her sake it’s not true; if she really is shopping a book, taking shots at Maverick could be worth another million in sales. Exit question: Does anyone know what he’s talking about when he says they’re getting together in a week or so? The annual RNC winter meeting is next Wednesday but I’d be surprised if both of them — or either of them — were going.

Blowback

He seemed OK with it.
Larry however looked liked he was trying to gin up some trouble.
Sarah Palin has every right to criticize the McCain/Palin campaign. Her name was on it and she took her lumps for the team.
The election was about who would become the next president and not about the feelings of some campaign staffer.

Let’s be honest. The campaign deserved criticism.
It sucked.

Maybe he realizes that if he did a rip on Palin, it wouldn’t just be a 10K comment thread, but the Senate switchboard would be shut down and burst into flames.

I can’t stand Larry King, and don’t understand why anyone would go on his show. I don’t even think he’s that biased, in the sense that I don’t think he has any opinions of his own.. he just uses whatever material is floating around the rest of the media. He’s unwatchable because he’s just a horrible, horrible interviewer.

At least he finally made some admiring comments about his former running mate, instead of letting the savaging from anonymous campaign staff go without a statement. Sarah Palin never spoke unkindly of John McCain. It was quite the opposite.

chunderroad on January 22, 2009 at 8:30 PM

You know, after the campaign, I can’t believe a thing McCain says.
He never says what he means or means what he says.
(And yes, I voted for him and gave a couple hundred bucks to the campaign.
But he never justified my faith in him–not once.)
Sarah gets all the kudos: she was the jewel in the crown!

Jenfidel on January 22, 2009 at 8:30 PM

I have never seen Sarah Palin criticize McCain personally. I’ve seen her criticize anonymous bloggers and staffers who take unfaid and untrue shots at her. She has offered criticisms of some of the ways things were done and she can. She doesn’t whine, she states something could have been done better. She has a right to say what she thinks about her campaign…

CCRWM on January 22, 2009 at 8:32 PM

When is McCain going to understand that he is yesterday’s news? He has gone the way of Mike Dukakis…or should be well on his way to that end. Had he actually had that respect and affection for Governor Palin, he would have insisted that his campaign team let her loose, to do what she does so well, at whistle stops all across the nation, big and small, instead of using her as a “Regis and Cathy Lee” prop to show how cool he was.

McCain is yesterday. The Palin’s, Jindal’s, Steele’s, Blackwell’s and host of others are the ones who need to be in the front pages, now, more than ever, instead of this constant looking back, trying to appear relevant, that McCain over the past few months has excelled at.

I suspected all along and the more I see the more I’m convinced that McPain never meant to win the election to begin with. He like attention, he wanted to run, but he is far too old and feeble to want that job for four or eight years. He has been in colusion with the dems for years and I strongly suspect that he will switch parties here sometime very soon. He is a despicable rat, regardless of his service.

I think she represents a lot in the republican party (ahem *cough, cough*).”

Of course since he and his cohorts were spreading the venom against Palin prior to Nov. 4 and afterwards.

I don’t think she wants to run out of personal ambition, she problably would love to just enjoy her life in Alaska. If she ran it would be out of a sense of duty , conviction and her patriotism. She loves this country.

I think what makes Palin appealing to many of us is that we trust her to put America’s interests first. I fear that Obama and his crew want so much for Europe to adore them that they will sacrifice our country to do so. Sarah would never do that. She also has wisdom which is something that Obama is severely lacking in. If there is someone in four years who can be trusted more or even as much as Sarah than we can make our decision during the primaries.

_________________________________________

how to be a mccain hater: the PCA method.

P – Puff up and snarl. doing this at the first sign of disagreement demonstrates the a priori nature of your passion on the matter. it’s also only sporting as a way of warning your opponent that you’re fully prepared to unleash the deadly force of the following two steps.

C – Call names. “rino” is most appropriate here. calling an opponent a rino has two complementary effects: first, it establishes you as the standard-bearer of republican values. second, it establishes your opponents apostacy from the same. better, it accomplishes these effects by decree and without an attempt at even a partial argument.

A – Associate your opponent with axiomatically unclean persons. these would of course include mccain himself, but a close second would be lindsey graham. a clever way of doing this is to actually accuse your opponent of literally being mccain or graham (you see, because the resemblance is so close. get it?) graham and mccain’s names can be modified for added devastation e.g.: “juan mccain” “juan mcamnesty”, “lindsey gramnesty”, “poopy mcfartface”, etc. only as an absolute last resort should the personage of juan gonzalez be employed. the power of this name is such that the effects of it are final, like salting the blast zone after dropping a nuke. wear a helmet, gloves and goggles when typing this name. it could save your life.

this method can also be used in the field to be an effective bush-hater. simply replace “rino” with “neocon” and substitute “karl rove” for lindsey graham.

Mmm hmm. So what was thrown back at her, hmmm? If criticism was mutual, as it “always” is, and you have nothing but good things to say about her, who in your campaign tossed their opinions, Johnny?

MadisonConservative on January 22, 2009 at 9:45 PM

You want to elect a RINO? Find that one that can win, WANTS
to win, and stop being whiny babies …

lol!

…fred thompson.

I wonder myself about McCain wanting to win. And when he chose Gov. Palin, his stock rose with consertives that were sitting on the fence. And then he would not fight.

+99,
only McCains blessing means less than 0. Hes’ a cranky, old, inarticulate, bumbling, out of touch Dem wrapped in republican hides.
Arizona would do themselves and the country a favor by retiring the buffoon/king of bailouts/king of backstabbers.
The only good thing he as done for his country in the last ten or so years is introduce us to Sarah and he even managed to screw the pooch on that by appearing at every presser learing like a dirty old letcher.
A discusting man! I want my 50 back, should have sent it directly to Sarah.

dhunter on January 22, 2009 at 9:49 PM

Very graceful, dignified and loyal by Sen. McCain.
Hopefully Gov’r Palin’s book will return the kindness.
We do not need a feud right now. Remember the other guys are the party of unity.

HotAirJosef on January 22, 2009 at 8:3

I disagree. Liars and RINOS should be outed at every turn. It’s time to call a spade a spade. No more “Misspeaking.” It’s a lie or the truth. Too much has been lost due to covering for the jerks like McCain. I, for one, no longer want to be party to a pack of corrupt wimps.

Palin scares the hell out of them because she is real and for the people; that’s a huge threat to the fakes like Huck and McCain.

americanpatriot on January 22, 2009 at 9:49 PM

Is it possible he did want to win but mistook the American public? Did he think surely the Americans I know and fought for would not elect an inexperienced guy with shady dealings (Rezko house deal and slum projects), unethical practices (giving his wife’s hospital 1m to pay her 300k year), no accomplishments, who pals around with terrorist Ayers, Khalidi, AL Mansoor, an anti American anti semetic pastor… because I sure didn’t! I still haven’t gotten over what this country has become. Once praying I actually apologized to God because Obama got elected.

CCRWM on January 22, 2009 at 9:55 PM

McCain is full of it. He stood by silently as people from his own campaign saved her after the loss.

McCain needs to switch parties now, so that Most Excellent Dear Leader will like him even more.

God, I cannot believe I actually voted for this senile old fossil.

EDIT TO ABOVE:

The first sentence should have read:

…as people from his own campaign savaged her after the loss.

You’re fucking joking ain’t you?

Hilts on January 22, 2009 at 10:06 PM

I think this is the most positive thing he’s said about her since the campaign.

I’ll give him props for that. I think Palin is going to avoid slamming him directly, but will criticize the handling, media bias, and some of the campaign decisions (she may deflect it to “campaign staff” rather than blaming Mac). McCain looks like he’s going to talk about her being a good person and an asset, without giving endorsements or lots of details about her contributions to the campaign.

He’ll probably keep giving Republicans black eyes, too (amnesty, bailout etc.)

Life will go on. He’ll eventually retire from the Senate, and if Palin plays her cards right she’ll lead the ticket in 4 or 8 years. At least, that’s my take.

cs89 on January 22, 2009 at 10:10 PM

Calm down, dear.

Whatever she did to the base she was a serious vote loser at worst and a neutral influence at best.

One presumes you like to win elections?

Ares on January 22, 2009 at 9:20 PM

Agreed. She just wasn’t ready. Kinda like a promising rookie QB thrown into the fray on a 2-14 team with a lousy offensive line.

Has potential, but hopefully she wasn’t ruined by the impression she left during the 2008 campaign and the crappy way she was handled and directed by McCain’s lousy staff. We’ll see.

Dreadnought on January 22, 2009 at 10:16 PM

Then why did you turn loose your attack dogs, uh, “senior advisors” on her? Lying dog!

RMR on January 22, 2009 at 10:18 PM

The payback to McCain is that the only thing history will remember about this guy is his panicky, buffoonish suspension of his campaign, and his naive and idiotic request that his opponent do the same.

casel21 on January 22, 2009 at 10:18 PM

Exit question: Does anyone know what he’s talking about when he says they’re getting together in a week or so?

Maybe he’s going up to see ANWR. He did say during the campaign that he’d promised her that he’d go up and see it with her. And, hey, the dead of winter seems like a great time to visit a barren coastal plain above the Arctic Circle.

I don’t know what happened behind the scenes, but they’ve yet to say an unkind word about each other in public. Larry was just trying to get a rise out him by spinning what Palin said in regard to media strategy. Good on Mac for not rising to the bait.
