I was in California during the Northridge Earthquake. FEMA response there sucked eggs, to be charitable. But that’s part and parcel with the whole Federal thing…the Feds are supposed to supplement, not supplant, local resources.

If you believe FEMA’s response was pathetic, consider that it was being used for a purpose that it wasn’t designed for…

Plenty of blame to go around.

Although other states were indeed better managed than LA, the federal response, when needed, was pathetic.

I hope everyone learned a valuable lesson about relying on gubmint….but I doubt it.

Bush placed incompetent cronies in cushy positions in FEMA.

Incorrect assessment.

Mike Brown’s job was never to coordinate the response, a response that was delayed five days because of an incompetent Democrat Governor and a complete criminal idiot NO Mayor.

And the federal response is so much more than FEMA. FEMA has 2,000 employees for the entire country and they have to be ready to respond to other emergencies, should they happen.

There are dozens of federal agencies involved in a disaster like Katrina.

And you know why you never heard any problems occurring in Mississippi or Florida, areas that were hit harder than Louisiana?

Because they had competent state and local officials. The feds can’t do anything without them, they must have authorization from the state AND the locals know the area, stuff that can’t be learned in an instant when helicoptering in from Washington.

If it’s a swipe, it’s a well-aimed one. The federal response to Katrina was shameful…Bush placed incompetent cronies in cushy positions in FEMA. I guess he never thought they would be truly tested. That gamble didn’t pay off, did it?

Note the absence of ‘swipes’ at Bush over Iraq etc…

Why this attack?

Despite what many are saying, all will not be perfect despite the fact that a man of color was put in charge. And not because men of color are necessarily stupid or poor leaders.

Politics will continue to be played with lies, unfair attacks, bribes, race cards and other skullduggery.

The real stupidity lies in expecting anything but image polishing and poor management from the gang we put into power. Since reality is a teacher, a diversion will be necessary. So keeping the electorate happy will require a constant supply of Bush bashing and other tricks. We see the start here.

Much more will be needed. Take it away, MSNBC and the major media!

Senator Obama introduced legislation requiring disaster planners to take into account the specific needs of low-income hurricane victims.

Read, totally stupid people… People that didn’t have two cents of intelligence and decided (in all their obesity) to leave the car parked outside their home and find out what a “real storm” was all about…
I can’t tell you how entertaining I found it to watch the brave and wonderful people of the coast guard lift the stupid people from their roofs!

The last I checked, over $300,000 was spent for every man woman and child in NO by the Fed Gov’t. It seems that once you get your story out the sky is the limit!
How much more money do we need to spend on a national level for the sins of a natural disaster?
The fact that the people of NO are either too stupid or too corrupt to bring their way of life back with this kind of funding makes me wonder if we should have ever spent a single dime.
I mean really, how much milk do you really think this cow has… Evidently, more than you have milked already…

No mention of Nagin and Blanco, the real culprits, eh Barry? And as always, I have to point out how annoying calling it “Katrina” is. Katrina only struck New Orleans with CAT 1 to 2 conditions, but structural flaws led to the levees failing. It wasn’t a “hurricane” that caused that mess, it was construction issues. Period. I don’t even need to get in to Nagin’s fun with buses, and Blanco blocking the Red Cross from going to the Superdome (while demanding Bush send the very supplies that the Red Cross had there, ready to hand out). Oh, and my favorite cherry on top was that despite all the race card nonsense that came out of that situation, white’s died at a disproportionately high rate in New Orleans, and blacks at a disproportionately low rate.
