Were plague deaths the result of botched bioweapons experiments?
posted at 9:10 am on January 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Yesterday, I cautioned readers to take the report from The Sun about plague deaths among al-Qaeda terrorists with considerable skepticism, both because of the source and the rare nature of the disease. The Washington Times, with considerably more credibility, picks up the thread and posits a plausible explanation — that AQ attempted to create a biological weapon that infected its own crew by mistake:
An al Qaeda affiliate in Algeria closed a base earlier this month after an experiment with unconventional weapons went awry, a senior U.S. intelligence official said Monday.
The official, who spoke on the condition he not be named because of the sensitive nature of the issue, said he could not confirm press reports that the accident killed at least 40 al Qaeda operatives, but he said the mishap led the militant group to shut down a base in the mountains of Tizi Ouzou province in eastern Algeria.
He said authorities in the first week of January intercepted an urgent communication between the leadership of al Qaeda in the Land of the Maghreb (AQIM) and al Qaeda’s leadership in the tribal region of Pakistan on the border with Afghanistan. The communication suggested that an area sealed to prevent leakage of a biological or chemical substance had been breached, according to the official.
“We don’t know if this is biological or chemical,” the official said.
The story was first reported by the British tabloid the Sun, which said the al Qaeda operatives died after being infected with a strain of bubonic plague, the disease that killed a third of Europe’s population in the 14th century. But the intelligence official dismissed that claim.
I’m not sure why they would “dismiss” the claim when they themselves don’t know enough to say whether the breach was biological or chemical. Perhaps they have intel on specific strains of disease that AQ has accessed, or maybe they just know more than the WT source wants to say specifically. It gives further corroboration to The Sun’s report, and strongly indicates something went wrong in Tizi Ouzou.
No one will be surprised to hear that AQ has been playing with either biological or chemical weapons, or both. They have tried for at least ten years to develop some kind of WMD that would allow AQ cells to terrorize large populations with a minimum of personnel. Chemical weapons would probably work better, as they would be somewhat easier to contain and control, especially in the rough environments in which AQ works. Most of their efforts take place in areas where clean rooms and laboratory controls can’t exist.
If these reports about Tizi Ouzou are correct, AQ has managed to kill more of their own people in one shot than they have of infidels in quite some time. If they’ve contaminated one of the safe locations, so much the better.

While part of me is laughing at those turbaned idiots, I can’t help but be worried. “If at first you don’t succeed” and all that…
And with Mr.Hopeandchange as POTUS, lethal mistakes might be the only way terrorists get killed anymore besides suicide bombs.

Interestingly, all of the confirmed dead appeared to have also contracted double tap wounds to the head….
The report was confirmed by a combined British and American investigative team which was ferried from the area by multiple black hawk helicopters in the early pre-dawn hours.

One can’t help but hope that a number of infected AQ agents fled to other AQ camps.

I am sorry, but it has been proved that AQ does not have WMD’s. They do not have bio weapons…they pose no threat…glad I don’t ride the subway, or live in a major city.
Besides, I am pretty sure any bio disease would have come from Bush’s own lab in the basement of the White House…you know, the one that created AIDS…

BWAH HAHAHAHA!
Perhaps they died of bad hygiene? I went to high school with 2 Iranian brothers & they smelled very bad.
I remember as a child in CA in the ’70s we were told at Yosemite (signs were everywhere) not to feed the squirrels as they had it.
BTW-how many strains of plague are out there & what does our plague vaccination consist of as far as competent protection from the disease?

With their disregard of human life and desire to die for their 72 virgins, this might have just been a successful experiment! Beware!

Or infected it’s own members on purpose so they could be “suicide carriers” sent to infect the general population. Especially if this was pneumonic plague where you can be infected – and contagious – for 5 days before showing any symptoms.
Wonder if there were any recently arrived Algerians in the inauguration crowds today?

Who cares? the Obamessiah is now in charge. He’ll fix it.

Anthrax, smallpox, or ebola virus would be a much better choice. It could probably be spread in airports–escalator handrails, etc. outside the security areas.

Some English terrorists were working on ricin poisons. A nutcase died of it in Las Vegas last year–probably before he could spread it in a Casino.

Our enemies are always working on something–and sooner or later they will probably get it “right”. Be prepared–if you can think of a plan that works.

Just to throw the cat among the pigeons – again: what if it was Ebola virus? That kills very quickly, and is hard to treat.

My apologies, rocketman.
Not to self: read the damn posts – idiot!

Not a good day. I wonder why?

Allah: Your circumspection is admirable, but didn’t you think it a little odd that the Plague should suddenly rear its head from the anonymity of the centuries and strike down–not some rare, random, victim, but 40–40–murderous jag-offs from al-Qaeda? No bells were ringing upstairs, huh? Maybe it’s time to hand over the keys.
ahem on January 20, 2009 at 7:58 PM
No, it is a bacteria – Yersinia pestis. Antibiotics are effective, but they must be administered promptly. If your were looking to build a bioterror weapons, the pneumonic version of the plague would be a good start. It is about 90% lethal, and must be diagnosed promptly for effective treatment. In all seriousness, given the timing of this, you know the feds have got to be looking at travel records from Algeria to DC.

Bioweapons are the poor man’s nuke. Anthrax, yes but hard to weaponize effectivly and NOT contageous. It’s not enough to simply touch it. You have to INHALE it. That is why “weaponization” is so tough… lets just leave it at you have to make it a certain way and that is technologically beyond most countries capabilities, thank god. Smallpox yes. Ebola is bad stuff… but frankly it kills you too fast (ie before you can give it to others), it is not that contageous (blood/body fluid) and we have no clue where it comes from. The worst would be some Ebola/flu hybrid… but said virus does not exist outside of doomsday movies like Outbreak or The Stand.
BadBrad on January 21, 2009 at 6:53 AM
I think that we are underestimating the threat of biological weapons. It is at present terrifyingly easy to create a virus or bacteria capable of killing/spreading all over the planet. All it would take is a few psychos who have taken microbio courses and very little equipment. If they indeed failed at creating a bio weapon, the thing to take notice of is that they actually tried creating one. If there is any case to be made for actively seeking them out and destroying them where ever they operate, this is it.
ebrawer on January 21, 2009 at 8:27 AM
Hey, maybe AQ can move their base of operations over to Gitmo…I hear that space will be available soon.
Wyznowski on January 21, 2009 at 12:14 PM
Sloppy procedures, no doubt. They should probably order all such experimental operations be moved closer to the AQ headquarters — right into the mountain and cave-dwelling hideouts themselves. That way, they can put some of the top leaders in immediate charge of quality control. No?
