Welcome home: The party awaiting the Bushes in Midland

posted at 5:30 pm on January 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Washington DC won’t throw the only parties today.  The people of Midland have a Texas-sized celebration of their own planned for the return of George and Laura Bush.  They’ve had the streets closed since Friday and expect a big turnout:

Eight years ago, this West Texas city hosted a send-off as then-President-elect George W. Bush headed for the White House. The community is now poised for a welcome home celebration.

Bush and his wife, Laura, plan to head to Midland on Tuesday afternoon after the inauguration of Barack Obama in Washington, D.C.

Some city streets have been closed since Friday and almost all of the 20,000 free tickets to the celebration have been handed out.

They’ll have country music for the free party and concert, with Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers and Lee Greenwood on the bill.  Governor Rick Perry will welcome the Bushes back to Texas.  Later, the Bushes will make their way to a new home in a Dallas suburb for some rest after eight years of service.

Will George Bush stay out of national politics after his retirement?  Most former presidents can’t resist the limelight.  Bill Clinton missed it so much that he had his wife run for the presidency, while Jimmy Carter couldn’t keep his nose out of American foreign policy.  George H. W. Bush has limited himself to charitable efforts for the most part, and I’d guess that W will follow his father’s example.  He will likely write a book to tell his side of the story — I can’t think of anyone who has more need to do so — and do a media tour in support of it.  After that, we’ll probably only hear from him for fundraisers and the like.

Blowback

Based on the above, what does that make George W. Bush?

Mr. Joe on January 20, 2009 at 5:32 PM

The full benefit of GWB being president during these years will be markedly manifest after two years into the Obama fiasco.

THEN it’ll be party time.

Will they be serving arugula….?

That’s because Texans have class, unlike the lib-tard elites and government hand-out dolts!

Thank you President Bush for everything, especially keeping us safe, enjoy your rest, you deserve it!

Now that’s a party I would’ve liked to attend today. I worry that this man doesn’t realize how much he means to some (many) of us.

Least of These on January 20, 2009 at 5:39 PM

Are they going to be allowed to have bottled water and fried foods?

I would take that party over the gag-fests occurring in D.C. even if it were raining spiders and Manson were running loose somewhere in the crowd.

I’ve never been to a real Texas BBQ, I’ll bet this one will be a blast.

Bishop on January 20, 2009 at 5:40 PM

I’m in/from Midland. Just left the event after trying to get in. Standing room only. Totally packed. Lines to get it went for city blocks. I saw an earlier MSM report a day or so ago that referenced the “hundreds” of people that event planners were anticipating. No doubt that is the story….narrative rather….than the MSM wants.

This isn’t hundreds. it is thousands and thousands of people. In a town of roughly 100,000.

All without Springsteen or Bono.

Mr. & Mrs. Bush deserve the party and a good rest. I didn’t agree with everything he did, but he did a great job with 9/11 and that was the big one. The Texas party sounds way more fun than the White House bash. Better food, nicer people, better entertainment and pleasant weather. Good for them, the should just relax and enjoy.

while Jimmy Carter couldn’t keep his nose out of American foreign policy.

And I still can’t, for the life of me, figure out why a former president who, by any objective measure, had a presidency that was an absolute disaster, felt the need to chime in on current events.

For the love of God, Jimmah, get over it. You fumbled your shot at history, and you’re only making yourself look like a fool now.

Not sure if he will.

Bush strikes me as a man who is content to let history judge him, and doesn’t really care one way or the other.

He did what he felt was right, and that’s enough for him.

I am so grateful that he stuck to his guns on Iraq and Afghanistan when so many hated him for it.

Even though I didn’t agree with Bush on many issues I am deeply grateful for his commitment to the safety of this country and its citizens. I remember how 9/11 altered our lives, and I think Bush understood what had to be done. It wasn’t what he anticipated or wanted for his presidency, yet he did what he felt was necessary.

While the left screams about abuses one wonders how their lives were changed or imposed upon. Ingrates, all of them. They live to whine another day because of the unpopular choices Bush had to make. He took enormous abuse without complaining.

I wish him and Laura all the best. They won’t impose inflict themselves on the public in retirement as Clinton did, or Carter.

We’re in a free-for-all now with neophytes who lack grace, integrity and the sense of duty for the responsibility assumed.

God help us all.

You kept us all safe and your heart, always, was in a good place. For our country. That is the way you will be remembered here in our homeland of Texas, and ultimately in the history books.

Under treaty and the law of the land, we here in Texas can still split into 5 separate states, thus giving us 8 more U.S. senators. Godspeed to you and our country.

Mostly liberals will write his history and the part that has the most legacy and what he should and never will get credit for is the large number of conservative judges he’s appointed nationwide.

Of federal judges now serving, 311 were appointed by Bush, about 38 percent of the federal judiciary.

benny shakar on January 20, 2009 at 7:53 PM

Bush has earned his rest, we’ve all seen how the Presidency ages holders of the office. I expect we’ll see relatively little of GWB in the public eye until the 2012 GOP convention. Hopefully by then his legacy will be better appreciated, we just have to pray for the nation’s sake that that isn’t because “well, at least Bush kept us safe” has become a condemnation of the the Obama administration.

I think GWB will slide into the elder stateman role with ease and grace, just as he handled his departure. His Presidency has had its final act, the epilogue will be the opening of his Presidential library. I hope he gets to see that, he’s earned at least one more day of appreciation from the nation, or at the least from those who understood his true worth.

Godspeed, Mr. President. Thank you for your service.

jim m on January 20, 2009 at 7:39 PM

Well, I now live in El Paso, which is a real outlier for West Texas, since people like my wife – a 4th generation West Texan – has absolutely no Texas accent.
Lubbock, Abilene, Odessa, Midland and points in between are much more conservative.
30-40 years ago, the only places in Texas with any Republcians in them was Midland-Odessa (that’s why GW Bush could have run for office there in the 70s), Dallas, the Panhandle, and some Houston suburbs (like where GHW Bush represented in the 60s and early 70s).
My mom met G HW Bush in a supermarket on Stella Link in Houston in 1970 when he was running for the Senate (I believe) and she told him that he was about the first Republican that she had ever met in Houston. Bush was running as a moderate, compared to the hyperconservative Lloyd Bentsen who had defeated the liberal Ralph Yarborough for the Senate. LBJ hated Yaqrborough and backed Bentsen, btw.. Bentsen said that Yarborough was too pro-hippie..
Texas Democrats were often racist and were ALWAYS nasty bastards. They owned ths whole state and you didn’t work for the state if you were not a Democrat. Now they still are nasty, petty bastards. I knew Molly Ivins back then when she co-edited the left-lib Texas Observer. ‘Nuff said…

jim m on January 20, 2009 at 6:58 PM

San Antone – and “moderate” would be an improvement over the People’s Republic of Northern Virginia, which is becoming like San Francisco without the Pacific.

And there’s no dispute the weather’s warmer.

Did you, maybe once, look at the Cabinet photos in the past 8 years? More diverse than Clintons, and probably more than Obama’s will be too.

Tool.

Anyhoo, I have an opinion on the Bush book- don’t hold your breath. I see Bush as someone who will want to set the record straight, but he won’t kneecap Obama by rushing it to print. He’s gonna give Obama a chance to serve effectively without righting all the wrongs the left/media have done over the years. As historians wake up more fully from their BDS trance, the timing will be right for a thoughtful look at his 8 years.

I just hope it hits in time to help usher Obama out in the next election, but we’ll see.

The biggest celebration of Mr. Bush’s life and accomplishments will come when his motorcade drives, flags waving, to his resting place.

Then will come the only moment that George W. Bush has ever cared about: Meeting his Maker, and entering his Kingdom.

What a man he was, and is. I thank God for giving him to us in our time of need, and I pray for him every day. I hope for him a long, happy life of retirement, and a peaceful walk to Heaven.

Well written and I completely agree.

I regret that I spent my 4 months in Texas hating the state (went to school in San Angelo). There are some great people down there, and the Bushes are two of them.

Hope they had a wonderful time at the party!

Best not to respond to the Toilet Bug that is ShankRoid…It is a very unhappy person…and not really all that bright to begin with. 99% of it’s posts are exactly like the one you responded to…best to let it fester in it’s hate and not acknowledge it’s pathetic ‘Hey, pay attention to me’ horseshit…

Dang I wish I could be back in my home town tonight for this. It’s not often that I wish to be back in Midland but today is one of those days.

NoDonkey: San Antonio is fairly moderate. At least you are not coming to a bit of the People’s-Republic-of_California (PRC) Deep-in-the-Heart-of-Texas: Austin.

I’ve been here for a while, and it’s nice — but it is an Obamination here…

You won’t find pork at a Texas BBQ, nor will you (typically) find sauce. But–I agree.

–Actually, that’s not correct (we were told the same when we moved here). Dickey’s, one of the largest BBQ chains, has pork and beef and sauce, and we just had pulled pork with sauce at a restaurant in the Fort Worth stockyard area.

jim m on January 20, 2009 at 6:57 PM

Actually the statement should have been you won’t find pork at real Texas Bar-b-que. Coopers in Llano is the Bushes favorite. (and mine)

But you are right about the sauce. No thick sugary sauces here. Just a vinegar based mopping sauce during the smoking process. Then let the beef speak for itself.

Damn, I’m hungry.

I was born and raised in Wyoming, and was privileged to have met the Cheney’s as house guests when I was a kid.

After a stint in Tokyo, I moved to Austin Tx, where again I was privileged to meet several of the Bush clan.

Some of their ideas are right. Some are surely wrong. But good, good people, with the right priorities one and all.
