Video: Roberts flubs the oath
posted at 1:03 pm on January 20, 2009 by Allahpundit
Rare bumbling from two guys not known for it. The One stepped on the first line but it was the Chief who completely botched the next. Good thing Obama paused and nudged him to try again; god only knows how many lawsuits we would have seen from birth-certificate Truthers claiming he’s not really president because he never said the magic words.
Update: People are still insisting in the comments that Obama screwed up. Here’s the constitutional oath; follow Roberts on the second line: “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States and will to best of my ability preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Blowback

I blame The One. He clearly threw Roberts off his pace.

Yesssss… Obama gave me something to badger my co-workers with right from the start! Thank you, Obama! If this was Bush, they’d be all over it making him out to be a moron. What, oh what, will they say tomorrow about this? Haha.
Everyone can screw up, and Robert certainly did too, but I thought only stupid people (like Bush, wink, wink) were capable of this?

Short term memory is the first thing to go…among other things.

You blame Obama’s nerves for Roberts screwing up? LOL BDS is in full swing. It’s so wonderful seeing the right completely descend into Kos territory not even a day into the new Administration. I expected it, but am curious how folks will rationalize the hypocrasy. No doubt you will say “well they started it” ignoring the insane CDS that dominated the 90s.
DeathToMediaHacks on January 20, 2009 at 1:09 PM
I’m thinking they were both nervous. Should have gotten together and practiced beforehand.

god [sic] only knows how many lawsuits we would have seen from birth-certificate Truthers claiming he’s not really president because he never said the magic words.
Not nearly as many as we will now see from the leftist troofers declaring that Roberts intentionally tried to trip Obarfa.

Got to wonder if it was a gentle reminder from Roberts.

Not to call into question your intelligence, but BDS, has nothing to do with Obama.
You mean the trials concerning our Molester-in-Chief? Yeah, that was insane. Even worse, the papers drafted against Nixon used against Clinton, you know, papers Hillary worked on.

Monkei on January 20, 2009 at 1:13 PM
He still repeated the incorrect line:
Roberts: “…that I will execute the office of President to the United State faithfully.”
Obama: “…that I will execute…” [Pauses & nods toward Roberts]
Roberts: “…the of-…faithfully the pres-…the office of President of the…”
Obama: “…the office of President of the United States faithfully.”
What’s the point of correcting if you’re going to get it wrong anyway.
He’s still not the president!

We will turn to people such as you to explain how it’s not hypocritical to insult, demean and slander Bush for eight years but now mentioning Obarfa’s name without glowing praise will be denounced as racist.
Whenever you’re ready.

8 years of “selected not elected”.
8 years of blame Bush for everything.
8 years of Bush is an idiot.
Screwing up the Oath of office on the most historic day in US history.
I call it even.

Not to an Athiest it isn’t.
So, I couldn’t bring myself to listen to The One’s speech. Did he actually say anything this time or was it the same platitudinous bullsh*t that I’ve come to know so well?

Yes, lets blame the Chief Justice because Obama can’t make a mistake, he’s immortal! He’s the Messiah! Go back to Kos you moron!

There were those who claimed Chuck and Di weren’t married because she flubbed up his names.
So is this Cheney’s or Rove’s doing?

While you ignore the “Reagan created AIDS to kill gay people” memes from the 80′s.
I suppose we will have to go all the way back to George Washington to settle this, but considering that he was more patriotic than every liberal currently living, I put him in our camp.
We win. You lose.

OMG – Imagine having to live with that screw up the rest of your life.
Stumbling into office, won’t be long before he is flat on his face.
I wonder how much Bush paid Roberts to give us this classic gem?
izoneguy on January 20, 2009 at 1:19 PM
Great…now 4 years of flubbed oath to add to birth certificate BS for us bitter people to go all troofer over.
Limerick on January 20, 2009 at 1:19 PM
There’s a psychological explanation for this. Obama was approaching the key part, “execute faithfully the office…”. It was the “faithfully” part that tripped him up. Seriously, that was a major roadblock for him!
Anyone one to add to this analysis?
stonemeister on January 20, 2009 at 1:20 PM
For crying out loud, they BOTH messed up. Obama will give us plenty of screw-ups in the next four years, but this was the fault of both participants. Let it go.
And what’s with giving MesSNbc traffic with a link??? Here’s the real time video for thinking minds.

What? What the hell are you going on about?
apollyonbob on January 20, 2009 at 1:23 PM
Cue Nelson Muntz with his “Ha Ha!”, pointing at Obama. I love Roberts and will send him a Christmas card for screwing up Obama’s “great historic moment”.
50 years from now, on the History Channel or whatever the equivalent is, we’ll see Obama’s flubbed oath (a little too eager, huh, Messiah?) accompanied by voice-over narration that says “Obama’s flubbed oath was eerily prophetic, foreshadowing the disastrous decisions he would make in his months as President.” :)

It wasn’t Robert’s fault either; he looked into Obarfa’s eyes and saw an empty void and it scared the shiite out of him.
I can understand why he fumbled.
Bishop on January 20, 2009 at 1:27 PM
Wow… You are pretty dense aren’t you. I don’t think that anyone here except you hates Bush that much. In fact, many people here admire him. Perhaps you were talking about ODS.

Jim62sch on January 20, 2009 at 1:28 PM
And, I noted this on another thread also, but his speech has an error at the beginning. It states “44 men” have taken the oath, but both wikipedia and whitehouse.gov note that 43 have served, with Cleveland being counted twice due to nonconsecutive terms.
When this speech is “inscribed in marble,” will it be the original (flawed) version, or a historically correct update?
hehe.

I betcha Obama planned the flub. He knew his speech was going to suck and he needed to give the people SOMETHING to talk about….
Rockygold on January 20, 2009 at 1:43 PM
No, Obama did not interrupt him. There is a traditional cadence to that oath that Roberts did not follow, but he should have. Obama was in the tradition, Roberts was not.

Barry is including Jefferson Davis.
Jim62sch on January 20, 2009 at 1:45 PM
No one said he’s “the worst president ever”, we’re merely trying to point out that he is human and not the second coming.
Cr4sh Dummy on January 20, 2009 at 1:46 PM
I think it was a Rovian tactic planned by McBushitler so that he could declare the inauguration null and void and declare himself president of the universe today.
/moonbat off
JadeNYU on January 20, 2009 at 1:46 PM
I didn’t know this, but the oath is symbolic, Obama would have taken over the Presidency at noon oath or not…I didn’t know that.
right2bright on January 20, 2009 at 1:47 PM
Did Roberts say “So help you God?” and President Obama answered “So help me God.”? In other words, Roberts asked that part as a question and Obama answered him in the affirmative; instead of Roberts stating it and Obama repeating it. Anyone else take that part that way? Is that the way it’s normally done? I can’t remember.
meltenn on January 20, 2009 at 1:47 PM

I hope you’re joking.
Why are we nitpicking over this? They both messed up. Given Obama’s past performances without a teleprompter, I’m not surprised. A bit with Roberts although it is his first swearing in.
It’s Obama’s policies that we need to worry about, not this. Get out of the weeds.
conservative pilgrim on January 20, 2009 at 1:50 PM
Obama did nothing wrong. Roberts screwed all this up. The look on Obama’s face said it all. He was like “What the hell are you talking about, man?”

Vernon Hardapple on January 20, 2009 at 1:52 PM
Because it’s the oath of office of the President of the United States.
Cr4sh Dummy on January 20, 2009 at 1:52 PM
While Obama jumped in too soon on the first line, I think it was Roberts who screwed up – first by rushing a bit and then by jumbling the “faithfully” part. If you look (and listen) to the presidential oaths taken through the decades, the more recent ones have a pause after saying their name. Somehow, I think Roberts forgot the first pause.
Logic on January 20, 2009 at 1:52 PM
I saw it that way too. Rather than saying it as a statement, he posed it as a question. Obama responded as an answer. Was odd that Roberts said it that way.
conservative pilgrim on January 20, 2009 at 1:52 PM
