Video: Roberts flubs the oath

posted at 1:03 pm on January 20, 2009 by Allahpundit

Rare bumbling from two guys not known for it. The One stepped on the first line but it was the Chief who completely botched the next. Good thing Obama paused and nudged him to try again; god only knows how many lawsuits we would have seen from birth-certificate Truthers claiming he’s not really president because he never said the magic words.

Update: People are still insisting in the comments that Obama screwed up. Here’s the constitutional oath; follow Roberts on the second line: “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States and will to best of my ability preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Why are we nitpicking over this?

conservative pilgrim on January 20, 2009 at 1:50 PM

Because it’s the oath of office of the President of the United States.

Cr4sh Dummy on January 20, 2009 at 1:52 PM

Nitpicking over the misplacement of the words in the oath? That’s being hyper-critical and looking for him to mess up. It gives credence to ODS and it isn’t pretty. Trust me, he’ll provide plenty of unquestionable screw ups in the next four years.

conservative pilgrim on January 20, 2009 at 1:56 PM

“Preserve, protect and defend the Constitution…”

Go sell crazy someplace else, Barry. We know how you feel about that old thing.

Obama initiated the gaffe.

Yes, jumped ahead because he probably is aware that he isn’t Constitutionally eligible for that Oath, and that Roberts has keen suspicions about that, too.

So Obama rushed the Oath along.

Probably afraid that Roberts’ character would assert itself.

What, he didn’t insist that his family and everyone on the dais leave so that he could have the stage all to himself again, a la Election night?????

ToddonCapeCod on January 20, 2009 at 1:58 PM

Somehow this has to be Bush’s fault…

the_souse on January 20, 2009 at 1:28 PM

Of course it’s Bush’s fault. He paid off Roberts..who had a grudge against Obama anyway, through Dick Cheney’s connections at Halliburton and a guy who is a mercenary for Blackwater. The trail was further covered up with help from the Trilateral Commission and a few people at the Federal Reserve, who owed a couple of favors for their part in Exxon’s stealing of the Iraqi oil reserves and covering the money trail in the Wellstone “plane crash” assassination.

What’s with all the hyperventilating about people wishing him harm? All of the presidential assassins or assassin-wannabes have either been leftist loons or non-political (like Hinckley). When has a right-winger ever tried to kill the President?

CNN was breathlessly talking about white supremacist threats this morning. Like that handful of bozos could be a threat to anyone.

Glad it wasn’t just me. That part was given as a declarative sentence in 2005 that Bush then repeated. I wonder if it was Roberts who decided to do it that way, or if Obama requested it.

Roberts flubbed, but who really cares????

omnipotent on January 20, 2009 at 2:23 PM

Obviously, Obama thought he was going to stop and wasn’t really concentrating. I suppose the situation might have been overwhelming, but had Obama not interrupted Roberts, the whole thing would have gone well. Roberts got it right first, but Obama couldn’t remember what to say. That’s when Roberts flubbed. But had Obama just rehearsed a bit, he would not have messed it up. Where was the teleprompter?

Christian Conservative on January 20, 2009 at 2:26 PM

So, this sickly, uninspiring weasel has been telling us for months that he is the next Lincoln.

The American Idol president. The racist whites can always say that blacks are still not equal because Oslime-a didn’t have to compete on a level playing field where the MSM vet each candidate with equal vigor. Affirmative Action for political office……Where is a real civil rights hero when you need him?

This is the saddest day in American history in the last 50 years. At least after 9/11 white Americans were Americans along with other Americans of color and not white devils who need to “get right”.

csdeven on January 20, 2009 at 2:30 PM

Update: People are still insisting in the comments that Obama screwed up. Here’s the constitutional oath; follow Roberts on the second line: “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States and will to best of my ability preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

But here’s the larger point. Obama is a moron when he’s not reading a speech. We’ve all seen him stammering and stuttering his way through answers to the simplest of questions (also see YouTube if you need a laugh).

Anyone can bumble, but the ONLY thing B. Hussein has had going for him, is his supposed ability to speak. Again, this is nonsense, but the fact that he even screwed up while being sworn in is pretty damn funny. Now, do you think the late shows will have as much fun at his expense as they’ve done with Bush for 8 years? No. Here’s my prediction – If the comedy shows make reference to this gaffe at all, the punchline will still be at Bush’s expense. Mark my words.

RightWinged on January 20, 2009 at 2:31 PM

Allahpundit,

Well said! Proof that even the best and brightest (of which Justice Roberts certainly can count himself) is not perfect.

Let’s all hope for better times ahead.

Vernon Hardapple on January 20, 2009 at 2:31 PM

It is completely understandable that Roberts would flub the oath considering he is swearing in a slimbag Chicago thug who associates with people who have engaged in behavior that is decidedly unconstitutional. (Ayres, Wright, Rezko, Emanuel, etc)

Lets call for impeachment hearings immediately.

csdeven on January 20, 2009 at 2:33 PM

ousoonerfan15 on January 20, 2009 at 2:35 PM

Regardless of the order of words, the meaning of the oath was obviously there, and both Obama and Roberts obviously understood their meaning, and had the Oath in their minds.

I am getting tired of the teleprompter. He needs to learn to memorize and look at the audience. I think he’s afraid of becoming a Word Butcher like his predecessor. Instead, he’s starting to look like a Parrot, taking his lines from a machine.

unclesmrgol on January 20, 2009 at 2:39 PM

Roberts is obviously a racist.

wildweasel on January 20, 2009 at 2:49 PM

Looks like Justice Roberts got “caught up in the moment” when he gave Obama the oath of office. Remember this is the 1st time Roberts had to perform this task since becoming Chief Justice and even though he is still a Neo-Con,I’ll give him a pass on this one. Looks like they were both a little nervous. It’s not everyday you get to swear in the most powerful man in the world

Guys, I dislike Obama’s policies and appointments as much as anyone, but please chill out on the vitriol, hate and ridicule. There are plenty of opportunities for constructive criticism without making yourself look like you have ODS. Don’t be like the Left, who let their emotions rule them unil their behavior resembled a group of kindergardners.

I’m sure that Roberts flubbed on purpose, because Bush paid him to, so that Obama would mess up, thereby giving ammunition to the neocons to allow them to pursue some infantile challenge to his legitimacy. It’s all BushCo’s fault.

… oh, sorry, was channeling somebody over at HuffPo …

PersonalLiberty on January 20, 2009 at 3:36 PM

I imagine they were both really nervous. It was kind of cool to see that they are both human.

Kathy, Southfield, MI (Sent Tuesday, January 20, 2009 12:35 PM)

Comment from OP link. Probably sums up what 90% of folks are thinking, myself included. Obama critics will say its his fault, leftists will claim it’s Roberts’ fault.

Either way, he’s still the President. He’s a natural born citizen. He was legitimately elected.

Grats to all the lefties and pop-culture zombies who needed this to feel American again. Here’s a heads-up: Bush is not Hitler. This is not a fascist state. Democracy works when you actually have an electable candidate.

Bush is fairly out, and Obama is fairly in. Now lets see who is the more incompetent.

spmat on January 20, 2009 at 3:55 PM

AP – No No No.

Obama stuttered, screwed up, talked over Roberts after screwing up, which distracted the man.

Seriously, this site is starting to make me wonder of Olberman has bought it.

“I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States and will to best of my ability preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

now that he’s said this does it not mean that he has perjured himself? How can someone who believes that the constitution is “fundamentally flawed” make an oath to preserve and protect something they do not believe in?

Obama perjuring in front of America.

theguardianii on January 20, 2009 at 4:28 PM

good god almighty, how stupid can you people be?? According to the 20th Amemdment,it clearly states:

Section 1. The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January, and the terms of Senators and Representatives at noon on the 3d day of January, of the years in which such terms would have ended if this article had not been ratified; and the terms of their successors shall then begin.

it doesn’t say ANYTHING about if they bumble the Oath of Office, then the man taking it is NOT the President of the United States. Message to Chris Wallace who works for Fox News for even bringing this up on a day like this….

GET YOU HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS!!!even if this happened to make it to the Supreme Court, don’t you think Justice Roberts would throw it out the second it ended up on the podium?? Christ find something else to rant about already

DcMike2K on January 20, 2009 at 4:57 PM

Your headline is ROBERTS flubs the inaugural address???

WTF? When did HA start being Obama apologists?

Obama jumps all over Roberts – obviously he is unfamiliar with the process. Then he can’t remember more than 3 words of the 2nd line.

My God – this idiot needed a teleprompter for his damn inaugural address!

Here’s an easy solution for you: only read items posted by Ed. Pass over any Allah posts, either all of them or just the ones about Obama and/or Palin.

I’m not really sure where Allahpundit’s political views lie (and I’ve been following him since he was In The House on Blogger), but I find Ed Morrissey to be more even-handed and less given to favorites than AP.

Ed’s gig here seems to be sober, thoughtful commentary on topics political and religious. AP rocks out the hyperbole, humping robot vids, and satire. Variety is the paprika of life, after all. :-)

Having CNN on in the workplace becuase thats all they’ll allow, I heard stupid Woolfe Blitzed say at noon Obama is Prez even without an oath automatically. He’s so friggin wrong. The Constitution calls for the elect to only be Prez after saying the oath of office with ‘So Help You God’ as an option.

I get so sick of CNN telling me false facts. Blitzed is a little slime worm anyway. Friggin weasle.

Geochelone on January 20, 2009 at 11:44 PM

To me, looks like they both screwed up, but it was Roberts that started it, tried to correct, but Obama didn’t pick up the correction and made the same mistake Roberts did.

It probably has something to do with the fact that the Oath is incorrect legal English, because an adverb (faithfully) is incorrectly placed between the tense modifier (will) and the verb stem (execute) [which together comprise the verb]. Putting the adverb at the beginning or the end still makes it modify the verb (to execute). Thus: I faithfully will execute <object> or thus: I will execute faithfully <object> or (not as good): I will execute <object> faithfully. These are all better than: I will faithfully execute <object> and obviously mean the same thing.

So, in my mind, the screw-up does not modify the meaning of the Oath, and that’s all that matters.
