Quotes of the day
posted at 10:35 pm on January 20, 2009 by Allahpundit
“This is no ordinary time in the history of our democracy, and none of us can afford to behave like ordinary people. Every patriot must wish for the new president to succeed. These wintry days are gloomy indeed, but the dawn of the Barack Obama era brings with it the light of hope. Not false optimism, but rather the assurance that though we must walk through a dark valley for a time, if we keep our eyes on the mountaintop, we can make it through, together.”
*
“Some of this patriotism may be of the sunshine variety — in for a day or a season, when the costs are not great. Or more cynically: in to show that their hatred for America is really just another form of political ‘dissent.’ Yet whatever the nature of these changes they cannot for now be discounted. Consider: When President Obama commits this nation to war against the Islamic terrorists, as he already has in Afghanistan, he will take millions of previously alienated and disaffected Americans with him, and they will support our troops in a way that most of his party has refused to support them until now. When another liberal, Bill Clinton went to war from the air, there was no anti-war movement in the streets or in his party’s ranks to oppose him. That is an encouraging fact for us in the dangerous world we confront.”
*
“DON’T question the motives – question the policy. When you disagree with Obama’s policies, say so, and make it clear why. But remember that President Obama is doing what he thinks is best for the country, as President Bush did. Both men love America and want what’s best for her. End of story.”

The “dark days” of a four to eight year presidency of a left-leaning president? Where were you during the Clinton years? Holed up in a isolated commune with an apocalyptic cult? And here I thought America had had quite a few Democratic administrations in the past.

Oh puhleeaze. I’m sure that if there had been any attacks/bombings in Iraq the press would’ve reported every grisly detail like they did the last 6 years… It’s not like they wouldn’t be trying to put pressure on their guy and make the US look like a wimp… Why gosh, golly, that’d make us all look like wimps and then Obama would have to demand that we all wear flag pins to demonstrate our unity!

I live about halfway between Atlanta and Macon in the country. I asked my daughter if she had to watch the inauguration at school today. She looked at me as if I was out of my mind. Apparently they had more important things to do at her school, like getting an education.
No need for you to even leave the state, but seriously I would get out of Atlanta.

Those “millions of previously alienated and disaffected Americans” who were against war when a Republican was president but will now support the war under a Democrat administration are partisans not patriots. They deserve neither credit nor respect and we should not be hesitant to point out their hypocrisy.

alex, feeling as I do has nothing to do with having a guy I don’t particularly care for running it. Tantrums that that belong to the left.
It is what he has planned for this country that has me so estranged from what I have grown up in and understand as the land of the free and home of the brave. Liberty. A government that was small enough to stay out of my way but big enough to keep my way safe. I could go on but it’s not my country anymore. And soon it will belong to a world community that has no love of it, no loyalty to keep its ways intact, to rob it blind and rape the goodness of its people for a world that will only use it.

My understanding of democracy is that everyone gets a vote and sometimes your candidate loses but you accept the legitimacy of the winner because otherwise you’d be living under another system, authoritarian or totalitarian.

Major media outlets have pretty much pulled out of Iraq. And they won’t be reporting too much bad news because that doesn’t fit the new narrative and might put pressure on Obama to rethink his immediate withdrawal strategy (which he’s meeting with Petraeus, et al., tomorrow to discuss).
But maybe that’s your point, I couldn’t really tell.
Actually I have no idea if an uptick in attacks is tied to our election or to Iraq’s own election at the end of the month. But this guy on the ground with the mortars coming at him seems to think something’s up. (“The reduction of forces has me nervous actually. They seem to be ‘building up’ towards ‘something.’ The word on the street is that they want to ‘test’ the new POTUS and what with everything I’m reading/hearing/seeing on the net/radio and TV, his talking about shutting down here in Iraq sooner is only going to provoke them into doing to us what Hamas is/has been doing to Israel. Meaning small provocative attacks that are pin pricks… not very effective on causing casualties per se, but makes life f*cking miserable for the Joes and us Scumbag Contractors.”)

We will not throw away common sense.
The premise that since both men love America both will do what is best for her makes no sense. Neville Chamberlain loved Britain as much as Winston Churchill, but one was a naive empty suit that endangered and almost extinguished a nation, and the other constantly railed against the nonsense until a nation finally listened when on the brink of disaster.
Any leader foolish enough to make a straw argument between a nation’s “safety” and “ideals” in an inaugural address to the world, just announced weakness. Enemies have no ideals other than to destroy.

Both men don’t love America in quite the same way. The extreme left (to which Obama has belonged his entire career) only likes the real estate. Obama’s entire being appears to be about socialism…and not the Western European variety…more of a personality cult, like Cuba, the USSR (Stalin), North Korea, and (dare I say) Hitler and Mussolini.
stonemeister on January 20, 2009 at 11:47 PM
I’m getting sick of this.
I really, REALLY don’t, do NOT, need a bunch of people telling me what to think. OR what to say.
I can think quite well for myself.
This business where conservatives are always running around telling each other how to think and how to behave, intending to manage the PR, I suppose, is ridiculous. And a large part of what got us to this point in the first place.
In any case, it isn’t working.
Very bad. But this is the way it is nowadays, because that is how the left behaves. Actually, I think that is why all the conservative talking heads are acting as they are. They don’t want this sort of thing to escalate.
But it probably will anyway. All they are doing is trying to put off the inevitable fighting back.

1. This is/was a REPUBLIC!
2. You are hounding people for not being on board with Obama. He may be the president, but we don’t have to join the conga line. No one is planning on taking over the government; we just aren’t willing to join the guy’s cult. We learned by the left’s example of how to treat a president of the opposing party. Thanks!
3. The main difference between a person of left ideology and a libtard is the libtard talks out of his tushy and screams “fascist” at those with whom he disagrees. I am surrounded by both and can tell the difference.
Laura in Maryland on January 20, 2009 at 11:52 PM
I think the talking heads are trying to fill a void right now because there’s no leadership. We’ve got the ostensible head of the party (McCain) doing his typical bipartisan thing and other Republicans either falling into line with that approach or hiding out somewhere.
And yeah, maybe because until today there wasn’t much of an opportunity for anyone to step up. But right now the Party doesn’t have a chairman, we’re in a distinct minority in both houses of Congress and we’ve lost the Presidency.
So the conservative pundits are it right now.
Bennett on January 20, 2009 at 11:53 PM
Until you showed up there was no Schadenfreude here, just a healthy debate. You, obviously, have no clue what the term means. You sound like a silly and faux erudite liberal.
Schadenfreude on January 20, 2009 at 11:53 PM
I don’t believe this for a second. And no one can point to any evidence that this is true. BHO will do what he thinks is best for his idea of what America should be – which is not what America has been, or is. His call for how much change we “need”, along with his idiotic ideas about our Constitution and judges, is clear proof of this. There’s lots of other proof, but this is quite enough to make an informed judgement of his motives.

When you convince me that fascist is a compliment, I’ll stop with the libtard label. This isn’t about your feelings, we are discussing how to handle dissent, how much respect the office of president deserves versus respect for the man, and expressing fears and concerns about the new administration.
If you have something positive to write about Obama AND you can back it up, then go for it. If some of us feel lost at the beginning of this administration, too bad! The thought police haven’t been hired yet.

I agree with Alex. I think we need to relax. The only reason why I ever get angry and “unhinged” at the left is because they say something so ignorant, arrogant, and hateful that I have to say something. Mutual respect is what this country needs. Unfortunately, what was displayed in Washington, D.C. (that “Hey Hey Hey Goodbye” nonsense being one example), is another symptom of the immaturatity of the people in this country. I think a lot of people are frustrated with the political system in this country and some come here to vent. That’s part of a forum’s purpose, and I’d say that’s unfortunate too. It should be about conversation and figuring out where we can go from here, not how much we can bash Obama OR Bush. I can tell the difference between what people call a “troll” who just comes on to the website to get his shits and giggles and a reasonable person like Alex who loves his country and thinks that maybe moderation is the key.
That said, I think my biggest problem with Obama is that he seems to refuse to defend Bush’s personal integrity (like when the people booed Bush and the “Reverend” Lowery gave that jackass prayer). He needs to have his “Sista Soulja” moment and show that he at least respects the president. I had the same problem with Kerry in 2004, although he has become more of a jerk as time has gone by. I didn’t have a problem with him, but the people that he aligned himself with. All he did was sit there at that fundraiser with Whoopi and John Mellencamp and make a fool of himself. It’s not free speech, it’s damn close to hate speech, and it’s ignorant. That is, again, one of the biggest problems with this country. People are unhinged because they no longer value an intelligent conversation, and the masses become jackasses like the one in front of the Washington Monument.

Canada; thought so. Up where they keep all the “good” journalists who hardly brainwash you at all.

The United States of America is one of the oldest constitutional republics in the world.

alex,
Our form of gov. is a representative Republic…
Just simple civics question for you…
How many forms of government are there?…main categories only.

That was really narcissisticly scary too. They changed it fast too. Must have gotten negative feedback. They’ve had months to prepare the template to replace the website and what do they choose… change.gov redux.

You have got to put them in private schools. I know it is very dificult. My wife and I sacrificed and sent my youngest son and a grandson through a Christian school. They both turned out great and they can even read.

I take it you haven’t read any Plato or Aristotle? Democracy comes from a conjunction of the words demos (meaning common people) and kratos (meaning rule or strength). Indeed it did originally mean unfettered mob rule.
A constitutional democracy is one with limits on majority rule. A republic is largely synonymous, meaning a state in which power resides with the people. The U.S. is a republic and/or a constitutional democracy. Just ask George Bush, he’s a big fan of democracies.
alex342 on January 21, 2009 at 12:31 AM
I kinda of thought so. Why is it so difficult for those who live in a Parliamentarian system to understand how a Constitutional Republic governs?

I imply the electoral college as a mark of it being a Republic, yes. But I’ll let the Article IV, Section 4, of the Constitution speak for itself:
“The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government…”
The word Democracy is nowhere found in the constitution.

So, getting back to Obama – we’re basically screwed, and now I’ve got to figure out how to raise a child in a dying, self-destructively decadent land. Wondies.
