Quotes of the day

posted at 10:35 pm on January 20, 2009 by Allahpundit

“This is no ordinary time in the history of our democracy, and none of us can afford to behave like ordinary people. Every patriot must wish for the new president to succeed. These wintry days are gloomy indeed, but the dawn of the Barack Obama era brings with it the light of hope. Not false optimism, but rather the assurance that though we must walk through a dark valley for a time, if we keep our eyes on the mountaintop, we can make it through, together.”

*
“Some of this patriotism may be of the sunshine variety — in for a day or a season, when the costs are not great. Or more cynically: in to show that their hatred for America is really just another form of political ‘dissent.’ Yet whatever the nature of these changes they cannot for now be discounted. Consider: When President Obama commits this nation to war against the Islamic terrorists, as he already has in Afghanistan, he will take millions of previously alienated and disaffected Americans with him, and they will support our troops in a way that most of his party has refused to support them until now. When another liberal, Bill Clinton went to war from the air, there was no anti-war movement in the streets or in his party’s ranks to oppose him. That is an encouraging fact for us in the dangerous world we confront.”

*
“DON’T question the motives – question the policy. When you disagree with Obama’s policies, say so, and make it clear why. But remember that President Obama is doing what he thinks is best for the country, as President Bush did. Both men love America and want what’s best for her. End of story.”

Consider: When President Obama commits this nation to war against the Islamic terrorists, as he already has in Afghanistan, he will take millions of previously alienated and disaffected Americans with him, and they will support our troops in a way that most of his party has refused to support them until now.

Well isn’t that just a bowl full of consarned peaches, leftist support of our troops is dependent on whether their guy sits in the White House or not?

Eff you, I’m questioning your patriotism.

Bishop on January 20, 2009 at 10:43 PM

It’s interesting that George W. Bush, for all his faults, appears to be a big enough man to embrace the new president despite the invective directed at him for eight years. And yet probably 80% of the comments on this thread won’t be able to acknowledge that Obama is now their president.

Maybe Bush isn’t fanatical like some of his supporters. I’m hoping Obama isn’t either like some of his.

Now tell me why I’m wrong and how Obama will never be your president.

alex342 on January 20, 2009 at 10:44 PM

I don’t recall anyone writing about, or telling liberals how to ‘celebrate’ Ronald Reagan or any conservative presidency, nor asking for “bipartisanship”.

All of you who do – go back to the crotch you slipped out from for today’s circus. The rest of us have to work and pay for your farking around among yourselves, with the One, but primarily with our country.

“This is no ordinary time in the history of our democracy, and none of us can afford to behave like ordinary people. Every patriot must wish for the new president to succeed. ….”

Ridiculous hyperbole. Set aside the fact that these vaunted editors of a major newspaper don’t know this is a Republic, not a Democracy, I’ll take my cue from the founding fathers in hoping the party opposite fails in spectacular fashion and remind them of their failures constantly.

When you disagree with Obama’s policies, say so, and make it clear why.

OK, I’ll bite……………

………… he was never vetted. No one knows exactly what his policies are, they are generalities in speeches that he changes from crowd to crowd.

……… the majority of his voting record is “present”, and the rest of his records are sealed.

………… he received millions of funding from over seas through the Internet, and the media didn’t blink an eye.

……. how much is he beholden to George Soros, and what effect on his policies will he have?

……. this is just scratching the surface,

…………… are you kidding me?

Why! What exactly constitutes an Obama success? Bigger government, higher taxes, open borders, less real liberty and freedoms. Yes this has got to be what every patriot hopes for. It’s funny. Now is the time to come togather.

What about the last 8 years? Anything the right does that is over the top or less than classy the next 4 years, they were taught how to do it by the Dem’s and MSM. I’ll not be quick to scold anyone who criticizes Obama and crew for any reason.

The left and the MSM has no shame. I’ve been converted this election cycle. Thanks to HA and other sources I learned a lot. The main thing I learned, we are at war with the left. And anything goes. Not my rules, not the rules I would choose, but it’s the way it is.

Let’s play.

Hog Wild on January 20, 2009 at 10:57 PM

When President Obama commits this nation to war against the Islamic terrorists, as he already has in Afghanistan, he will take millions of previously alienated and disaffected Americans with him, and they will support our troops in a way that most of his party has refused to support them until now.

I think this is naive. Obama supporters think he can do no wrong and presumably believe that he will achieve a swift and decisive victory because he is the Great I Am. If that victory isn’t so swift and sure (and we’ve been in Afghanistan for over 7 years now), if our allies continue to refuse to contribute and we get bogged down, trapped in a quagmire and even more troops are needed, I think it likely that many Obama supporters will look for the next anti-war Democrat coming down the pike. And this is assuming he isn’t forced to engage in some hot war somewhere else at the same time. Who knows?

Democrats haven’t suddenly fallen in love with the military. It’s kind of silly to think that.

Yes, I’m here in Atlanta, and the exact same thing happened today with my three daughters!

The 9yo in 3rd Grade was Forced to watch, when she told them she wasn’t interested, she was given the assignment of “reporter”, going around asking other kids what they thought of the “historical” day.

My 11yo, in 6th Grade, was also told she HAD to watch; she told the teacher she didn’t want to, and wanted to read a book; the teacher made her leave the class to run errands, as “punishment’.

My 17yo, in 12th Grade, was told it was an ALL DAY event to watch, they literally had no classes, and had to sit watching the TV all day!

Of course, down here in Atlanta, we’ve been feeling the ramifications of the election of The Messiah, since the night of the election.

My 11yo was pelted with sneakers last week, before school, in the school gym, by the Obama “contingent” in the school; she’s known as a “non-supporter”; they let her know the shoe throwing was in honor of the Iraqi shoe-thrower at President Bush!

Nice touch, huh? I spent an hour and a half in the school last week, reading the Vice Principal the riot act, and letting him, and everyone within earshot, that I was holding them personally responsible for my daughter’s safety, and if it happened again, I would be back!

My wife and all three girls, were harrassed by a posse of Obama supporters 3 nights ago, in the Wendy’s down the street, they was a gangsta crowd of about 7 Obamaites just letting eveyone know in the late night Wendy’s, that the “Bro’s” were getting ready to take over the country, and pay-back was going to start!

I’m seriously considering moving my family to Idaho or Montana…

I don’t want our Military cut, our weapons dismantled,my tax dollars to pay for abortions, a civilian task force, reparations for blacks, talks that will mean NOTHING with Iran, and many, many more reason why I don’t want Barrys agenda to succeed.

If his ideas and idealism succeed then the rest of the world succeed at the expense of our country, and our wallets.

I have only four issues with this man:

1. His beliefs, socialism/communism (oh, he’ll hide it in the first term, but then watch out..)
2. His inexperience
3. His utter arrogance
4. His wife – they’ll keep her and Biden locked up for the most part, but don’t underestimate that woman, ever.

Skywise on January 20, 2009 at 11:09 PM

One of the mistakes many pundits on the right are making, is in the idea that suddenly, now that they are in power, the Left will grow up and behave reasonably.

They went ape shit about 6 years ago, and started celebrating the most extreme of their groups. KOS, Code Pink, Cindy Sheehan… extremists got not only a platform, but lauded for their extremism, and given support (code pink got front row seats today…).

Since then, they have driven the agenda through sheer volume. They yell, they scream, they protest, and the media gives them attention, while ignoring any other viewpoint.

Well, it worked folks. In the last 6 years they took over the House, the Senate, and the Presidency…

Now, do you really believe that they are going to change their behaviour WHEN THEY WON?

The Right, while attempting to be reasonable, has lost out to pure volume from the left… and until they start to yell back, it is not going to change.

Romeo13 on January 20, 2009 at 11:10 PM

This quote is accurate: there was no opposition to Clinton’s military tactics. But when Bush did the right thing in going after the Taliban, the very group that oppresses women more than any other group on earth, NOW (National Order of Women) opposed it because it was Bush making the decision. NOW ranked partisan politics over their own principles of freeing women from oppression.

Some of this patriotism may be of the sunshine variety — in for a day or a season, when the costs are not great.

I bolded these two statements from the larger quote AP gave to illustrate how topsy-turvy-through-the-looking-glass the whole media has become. Mr. Horowitz is addressing this to Conservatives, that’s his audience (actually its not his audience, but he wants us to think it is so I’ll play along). In the first part he chides the notion of patriotism that wilts when the going gets rough, as well as it being redefined cynically as dissent. But then, in the second part he admits that he knows full well that many on the Left will now support the troops, not out of a renewed sense of tough patriotism, but because their guy is in office, demonstrating the very kind of fluffy patriotism that Horowitz feels the need to warn conservatives of. Plus, in warning us to not be cynical in showing our hatred for America by redefining patriotism as dissent (a definition codified by the new Sec. State herself) he then defines those who were guilty of that very “sin” of cynically expressing their hatred of America, as “alienated” and “disaffected”. This is what really burns my grits, that Horowitz, and those like him, when assessing the situation, feels the need to chide conservatives into not behaving like Democrats, while excusing and/or ignoring those very acts by Democrats. This is why I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that nothing, and I really mean nothing has changed, and there is no desire for unity.

Bush had good points and bad, and one of his worst was his pi$$-poor judge of character. He has misjudged Obama badly because he is seeing what he wants to see, just as he has before with others – it’s another, “great job, Brownie!” moment. Obama is the ruling head of the American decadent class, who will destroy this country just as their forebears destroyed Rome. Bush is wrong to be courteous, and I’d personally like to see Obama publicly embarrassed, discredited, and destroyed. Better him than the Constitution that he so miserably screwed up pledging to defend today.

Just bear in mind that by that same measure, you damn the left to pretty-sh*tty-excuse territory as well. The only difference is that you’d actually be accurate.

“DON’T question the motives – question the policy. When you disagree with Obama’s policies, say so, and make it clear why. But remember that President Obama is doing what he thinks is best for the country, as President Bush did. Both men love America and want what’s best for her. End of story.”

I can extend that to Obama, at least for the present. I find it hard to extend it to Pelosi, Reid, Chris Dodd, and Barney Frank. I can extend it to Maxine Waters only if I believe she has had a break from reality.

Someday soon… may be a week, may be a few months… America is going to wake up… with a terrible hangover, a new tatoo, and find themselves in bed with a transvestite, and ask themselves “just what the hell did I do last night?”

One defeated al Qaeda in Iraq after al Qaeda said it was the central front in their war against America. The other wanted to surrender. This is a sad day for America – and western civilization. End of story.

Okay, so maybe you’d like to see a military coup with, say, David Petraeus as acting president for an indeterminate length of time to safeguard the constitution. You’d probably be able to find a lot of support on HA if you did. Who knows, maybe he’d accidentally disappear in the process. That wouldn’t be so bad would it? It would place the U.S. that much further out of reach of Stalinism, right?

alex342 on January 20, 2009 at 11:17 PM

I hope President Obama does not go there, it would be a terrible mistake.

If he does it’ll open the door to Clinton and most of Obama’s staff.

Ya know, the guy who STARTED the rendition system?
Who also approved of advanced interrogation techniques?
Who authorized the use of the National Guard against civilians…

Sorry, Andy, I’m not buying it. The O is indeed “all about the O.”

I will not foam at the mouth like our liberal friends have these past eight years, but neither will I sing Kumbaya. I will wait, and watch–ever vigilant because I do love this country and everything it stands for. The unknown who was elected today will have to prove to me that he loves America at least as much as I, along with many other commenters here, do.

Eff you, I’m questioning your patriotism.

Yep.

This is the most disturbing day I have had since 9/11. I feel the same fear, sadness, anxiety and dread.
My head is spinning from the all of the utter absurdity and adoration of this man.
I’m afraid we have turned a corner from a world we will never see again.

I have no hail and I have no chief.

6 months ago you would’ve found lots of support for that on any Democrat website.

But you won’t find it here.

Personally I’m still surprised Bush didn’t come up with another false flag scenario to declare martial law while using the constitution to wipe his butt and keep the Democrats out of office.

Every patriot must wish for the new president to succeed.

We hear praise of a power-wielding, arm-twisting President who “gets his program through Congress” by knowing the use of power. Throughout the course of history, there have been many other such wielders of power. There have even been dictators who regularly held plebiscites, in which their dictatorships were approved by an Ivory-soap-like percentage of the electorate. But their countries were not free, nor can any country remain free under such despotic power. Some of the current worship of powerful executives may come from those who admire strength and accomplishment of any sort. Others hail the display of Presidential strength simply because they approve of the result reached by the use of power. This is nothing less than the totalitarian philosophy that the end justifies the means If ever there was a philosophy of government totally at war with that of the Founding Fathers, it is this one.

I did not support the adhanced interrogation techniques of the Bush Administration and was absolutely against Rummy’s “taking off the gloves” policy at the DoD, but war crime prosecutions would be a disaster for this country.

Take the gloves off? Are you nuts? They subjected KSM and two other top AQ leaders to a technique that caused no lasting injuries, although it admittedly scared the truth and shit out of them.

Anyone who prefers the comfort of terrorists to the lives of innocent people is deranged.

Obama looked pretty determined not to pursue prosecutions, citing forward-looking actions AND not making the good folks in the security world afraid to do their jobs. Maybe he’s smarter than he looks. Pelosi on the other hand, is salivating over dragging the Bush administration through show trials.

Yes that works well. Convince the people that every patriot must wish for the new president to succeed. Never to be asked is at just what he succeed at. That is the way to gain power. Then use words and terms like “wintry days” and “gloomy indeed” and “dark valley” and scare the crap out of them and then gain absolute power.
