Open thread: Obamapotheosis

posted at 9:56 am on January 20, 2009 by Allahpundit

Here’s your thread, two hours early as crowds fill the Mall, talking heads chatter about the miracle of peaceful transfers of power, and the media runs through its checklist of superlatives for the speech. “President-elect Barack Obama’s inaugural address is one of the most anticipated speeches in decades, with many expecting his words to be chiseled into marble some day,” declares CNN, already plotting a location for the Obama Memorial. See also Steve Kornacki at the Observer, taking the Lincoln comparisons a step further by imagining the Obama presidency as the second term Honest Abe never got to have. I’ll settle today for one memorable line, which will also be the first memorable line The One’s ever delivered.

I’m giving you the MSNBC feed, partly because their video player’s superior to Fox’s and CNN’s and partly because Olby’s and Matthews’s emoting will inevitably end up as a story all its own. Might as well watch while it happens. I’m not sure yet if we’re liveblogging this thing; if so, the widget will appear beneath the clip as game time approaches. While we wait, here’s Jonah Goldberg looking on the bright side by celebrating what Obama brings to conservatives.

Congrats and good luck to the new president. I hope he knows what he’s doing.

To me it looked like *Roberts* botched the first line… (didn’t that first recitation sound like an odd mouthful to you? Don’t know for sure, it just *seemed* really ‘off’ somehow…)

… and it seemed as if Obama immediately knew it was ‘off’, and waited calmly for Roberts to say the *right* phrase, which he kind of did – eventually …

… upon which Obama said the line *correctly* (albeit with some interruption), and everything moved forward from there.

Idle speculation on my part, but that’s the way it came across IMHO.

He’s a member of the same party that f***ed our economy into the toilet. He’s got personal friends that can’t cross the border into another country. You can believe that he will try to do the right thing. He won’t. His beliefs, his fellow democrats won’t let him. The GOP’s failure in finding a competent candidate to run against him, and now their complete capitulation has given him, and the Democrats the impression they have a gigantic mandate to do whatever the hell they want.
Grab your ankles; it’s going to be a long 4 years…and don’t expect any respite. The GOP has sold us out for good media coverage. Our candidates in 2012 will probably even make Mike Huckabee look good. We’re doomed.

If you have a problem with the negatived comment made about your new president, I would suggest to you “Don’t Read The Damn Thing”! This little petty and bitter high school guy is going to continue slinging childish and mean-spirited insults at your new President whether you like it or not. There are a hell of a lot of people on this site who dislike this man. Just because your in bed with this frickin terrorist doesn’t mean people like me will “Get over ourselves and be nice little boys and girls”!
If there is anyone here who need to “Get over yourselves” I would say that would be YOU!

Do you think Michelle Obama is proud of her country today?

You reveal much about yourself with that last post try again. Like I said before, I voted for Sen. McCain (long time supporter). He lost. Obama won. He’s now my President. You strike me as a very poor citizen, and you’re certainly not much of a conservative. Suggested reading for you: The Conscious of a Conservative by Sen. Goldwater. BTW, it’s “petty and bitter high school girl”. You’re a whining little girl…get it?

Just checked the Dow, as of 3:30 pm it is now down to 7,987.64.
This is not the hope and change we knew.

Getting elected is not a “qualification” for anything. We’re talking about tangible results born of hard work, something I realize liberals aren’t really interested in as they are all about intentions rather than results, but nevertheless this is what makes the world go ’round. Comparing their resumes side by side, Obama’s is much more meager than Gov. Palin’s, who was alone among all of the candidates as having actual experience GOVERNING. In that respect, I would deem her infinitely more qualified and accomplished.

By the way, on the heels of that underwhelming and slightly depressing inaugural speech (guess I can’t blame him — if I were carrying the weight of all these lofty and unrealistic expectations, I’d be doing what I could to diffuse them too), here’s my quote of the day, courtesy of a graduate of little ol’ Eureka College.

You and I, as individuals, can, by borrowing, live beyond our means, but for only a limited period of time. Why, then, should we think that collectively, as a nation, we’re not bound by that same limitation? We must act today in order to preserve tomorrow. And let there be no misunderstanding: We are going to begin to act, beginning today.

The economic ills we suffer have come upon us over several decades. They will not go away in days, weeks, or months, but they will go away. They will go away because we as Americans have the capacity now, as we’ve had in the past, to do whatever needs to be done to preserve this last and greatest bastion of freedom.

In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem. From time to time we’ve been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden. The solutions we seek must be equitable, with no one group singled out to pay a higher price.
