Open thread: Obamapotheosis

posted at 9:56 am on January 20, 2009 by Allahpundit

Here’s your thread, two hours early as crowds fill the Mall, talking heads chatter about the miracle of peaceful transfers of power, and the media runs through its checklist of superlatives for the speech. “President-elect Barack Obama’s inaugural address is one of the most anticipated speeches in decades, with many expecting his words to be chiseled into marble some day,” declares CNN, already plotting a location for the Obama Memorial. See also Steve Kornacki at the Observer, taking the Lincoln comparisons a step further by imagining the Obama presidency as the second term Honest Abe never got to have. I’ll settle today for one memorable line, which will also be the first memorable line The One’s ever delivered.

I’m giving you the MSNBC feed, partly because their video player’s superior to Fox’s and CNN’s and partly because Olby’s and Matthews’s emoting will inevitably end up as a story all its own. Might as well watch while it happens. I’m not sure yet if we’re liveblogging this thing; if so, the widget will appear beneath the clip as game time approaches. While we wait, here’s Jonah Goldberg looking on the bright side by celebrating what Obama brings to conservatives.

Congrats and good luck to the new president. I hope he knows what he’s doing.

… and the only prescription is more stream-of-consciousness poetry crap.

She’s not exactly Robert Frost.

Or even Bukowski.

So, a man goes into a bar carrying a poodle and a sausage…

HornetSting on January 20, 2009 at 12:32 PM

Just remember, The One is the smartest man in room or so they say. Way to screw up a 20 word oath Barry.

Lance Murdock on January 20, 2009 at 12:29 PM

It’s the inarticulate repugs like dubya, palin and yes, roberts who can’t speak for sh*t! you betcha!

Noneya on January 20, 2009 at 12:32 PM

I cant tell you one thing GW, Clinton said in any of their 4 opening speeches, so not a lot in the Obama speech to be remembered. Lots of campaign rhetoric though and more than one direct pointed and totally classless slam on President Bush.

Now we get the obligatory politically-correct lecture posing as something poetic. sheesh.

A month from now it will be intersting to ask an MSM
leg-thriller-upper if they can quote one single lasting passage.

Mike D. on January 20, 2009 at 12:32 PM

Three people out of 2 million just clapped for that “poem”.

What a loser innauguration.

fogw on January 20, 2009 at 12:32 PM

This is a poem? My six year old has invented better poems.

Mark Garnett on January 20, 2009 at 12:31 PM

Search for 790 waeb. That’s the Lehigh Valley affiliate and they have him. He’s letting them talk some, so don’t get disheartened.

Darksean on January 20, 2009 at 12:32 PM

So that poem was to make the speech look good?
Tripe upon tripe.

rbj on January 20, 2009 at 12:33 PM

Holy crap!

BallisticBob on January 20, 2009 at 12:33 PM

basically, 3% of Bush voters from ’04 switched to Obama.

I’d be willing to bet my paycheck some of them were women turned off by a supposedly “dumb” palin (media), some of them were latinos who wanted to vote for a non-white (simplistic but exit polling backs it up), and another group were the vaunted ‘new voters’, or increased black turnout, or the few blacks that voted for bush due to anti-gay marriage flocked to obama for the ‘history’.

a 3% switch to obama from bush. man oh man what ‘change’.

add to that had mccain not suspended his campaign and called out barney frank and chris dodd, and actually brought up jeremiah wright & ayers back in june, we’d be looking at “the dude” holding Trig right now.

battleoflepanto1571 on January 20, 2009 at 12:33 PM

basically, 3% of Bush voters from ‘04 switched to Obama.

Obama had like 75% black voter turnout in NC, it was a perfect storm for the Dems. Our job is to make them feel dejected about Obama and depress the cult in 2012

Great way to make the One’s speech look better. Make everything after either incoherent or unintelligible.

whenever a lib slams palin and says “man she was unqualified”, i think i’ll retort “TOTALLY. and just think, she was ten times more qualified than obama! PRESENT! PRESENT!”

it’s hilarious libs attack palin for her personality or manner of speech, while we have books of things to attack obama on related to policy/leadership

I’ll give Pres. Obama a chance–which is more than the liberals did for Pres. Bush.
