Good luck, Mr. President

posted at 12:00 pm on January 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

At about the time this post appears, Barack Obama will take the oath of office and officially become our 44th president, following in the footsteps of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Ronald Reagan — and also Millard Fillmore, Chester Arthur, and Jimmy Carter.  To steal a phrase from a popular movie, any president is like a box of chocolates; you don’t know what you’re going to get until it’s too late.

People have asked me since the election how I will approach the Obama presidency, but it’s really not that much of a mystery.  I’m not going to be rooting for his failure, because I’m rooting for America. I believe most people feel the same way; Obama won the election and for better or worse, he’s our president.  But that doesn’t mean that any of us will sit quietly for the next four years or the next four days.

The campaign is over, and now Obama has to govern, which means he has to start backing policies and initiatives that will reveal himself and his direction very clearly.  If Obama really wants to succeed in restoring the economy and creating jobs, he’ll have to find ways to motivate capital back into action — which will mean keeping taxes low, especially on capital-gains rates, and cutting government intervention.  Policies which confiscate capital will make the situation worse, and I will point that out as often and as vociferously as possible.

On foreign policy, we need strength, deterrence, and tenacity in dealing with enemies.  Allies who don’t support that won’t be worth much as allies, and multinational organizations more intent on anti-Americanism and anti-Semitism are a waste of time.  Expect me to loudly criticize the Obama administration for following useless policies designed to increase the Kumbaya factor at the expense of our national security.

Campaign issues, like Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, and so on, no longer matter.  Obama won the election.  In four years, he’ll run for re-election, and what will matter will be the things Obama did between now and then.  When Obama does something right, I’ll praise it, but I’ll speak up when policies go bad and mistakes are made.  That’s part of being an American.

Best of luck, President Obama.  My prayers are with you, for support and wisdom as you assume the burden of this office and lead our country.  When you fail to provide that leadership or demonstrate wisdom, though, don’t expect me to be silent.  I’m rooting for America, not the coach.

Just wait until McShame tries to shove amnesty down our throats again. wise_man will be out calling us all bigots. I bet he can’t wait.

It’s bad enough that you and others distort what I say and what I do in the here and now.

Then answer the question, would you call BHO a socialist? Yes or no.

“remake America”??? BullSh*t. This guy doesn’t represent me. This fraud isn’t MY President. I think he’s dishonest, AT BEST. I think he’s shifty, AT BEST. I think he has a VASTLY DIFFERENT vision for our country than I have.

marklmail on January 20, 2009 at 6:03 PM

If the situation is as you describe, then why has Sarah Palin not collaborated(that’s the spelling, damnit) your version? She has only said good things about McCain. And if there is anyone who should know, it’s her.

wise_man on January 20, 2009 at 6:00 PM

Because it’s classy for her to let it go? She has been complimentary to McCain as a person, but has really said some harsh things about the campaign.

Frankly, she got bad press for calling out Andi Sullivan on his Trig Trutherism and IMO she was completely justified there. Imagine the blowback from her calling out McCain.

Illinidiva on January 20, 2009 at 6:04 PM

what was the point?

wise_man on January 20, 2009 at 5:57 PM

The point was that he didn’t stop sucking once he became the nominee. Why is this so hard for you to understand? McCain was the same RINO “bipartisan reaching across the aisle” that worked with Ted Kennedy and Russ Feingold while he was the nominee that he was before he was the nominee, and after he was the nominee. And now he’s compounding it by chumming it up with Obama like a true “bipartisan reaching across the aisle”.

Conservatives are pragmatists, but they don’t give up their principles just to keep office either. Yes, the choice was between two, and hence why those of us who criticized him also voted for him, which was the only thing that mattered coming from us anyway. However, that didn’t mean we had to like it, the choice, or him. You seemed to think we did, and you were dead wrong.

Okay. I guess I have to help you out, again. You said that BHO was the most liberal senator of 2007 – which makes him more liberal than the self-proclaimed socialist, Bernie Sanders. Would you call BHO a socialist?

This is not a tough question.

I’m not going to be rooting for his failure, because I’m rooting for America.

If you root for America, it means you’re rooting for Obama’s failure. Not one of his stated policies or goals during the campaign is good for America.

You’re either clueless or your positioning yourself for replacement of one of the high-paid RINO pundit hacks in the MM. Too bad HotAir has come to this.

RedSoxNation on January 20, 2009 at 6:13 PM

This is just the minorest start of what’s wrong with wishing him well:

To that extent, as radical as I think people try to characterize the Warren Court, it wasn’t that radical. It didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution, at least as it’s been interpreted and Warren Court interpreted in the same way, that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties.

or,

We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.

or any number of other un-American, idiotic ideas that BHO has already said he wants to impose on us?

We have enough evidence to know that wishing the new Precedent any success in his plans is death for America.

RedSoxNation on January 20, 2009 at 6:13 PM

And, if those examples weren’t good enough for you, then his idea that judges should use empathy more than law in deciding cases should be quite enough, in and of itself.

We need somebody who’s got the heart, the empathy, to recognize what it’s like to be a young teenage mom. The empathy to understand what it’s like to be poor, or African-American, or gay, or disabled, or old. And that’s the criteria by which I’m going to be selecting my judges.

If that doesn’t scare you enough to not wish him well …

progressoverpeace on January 20, 2009 at 6:07 PM

The only problem I’d have with the question is that I would have to say that he is AT LEAST a socialist. Given some of his own words (I sought out marxist professors) and his associates (Billy Bomber Ayers) and his wanting to nationalize our businesses, I’d have to leave open the possibility of Marxist, Maoist or Facist.

The leftists are playing according to Machiavelli and so called conservatives and ‘middle of the roaders’ are trying to play by Marqui Di Queensbury rules. Unfortunately, Machiavelli will kick the tar out of Queensbury every time.

Progressoverpeace – I think you are being generous just calling him a socialist. Yet, some are saying you went too far

If we are to have any chance at all, we need to start being like Jan III Sobieski… Utterly ruthless. Most of us can think of other leaders as well… Lincoln was ruthless in pursing his objectives..

I see certain disaster when too many people try to bend over backwards for Obama. The burden of proof of intentions is on HIM. That is HIS fault because he has muddied up his past to the extent that he is a cipher. HE and his handlers did that. Until then, I have to believe what the evidence shows… That he is a hard core leftist who will work to undermine the foundations laid by the Founding Fathers.

Sorry Barry, Roll around in poo and people start thinking you stink…

I had a thought which I shall share on this historic day.

Liberals are weeping in joy over the end of racism in America. We conservatives have already gone way, way past this feeling. We’ve spent decades in a post-racial, happy intellectual space where racism is something other people fret over and engage in, not us.

Finally, today, liberals are getting a taste of what we conservatives wake up to every day: Joy in our country, hope for a bright future, a knowledge that race doesn’t matter and whatever you want, if you work hard, you can achieve.

Hey, libbies, welcome aboard!

I certainly won’t allow morons like you to suppress criticism of Obama or criticism of anyone wishing a Marxist to succeed in pushing the US over the tipping point to destruction with the numerous promises he’s made during the last few years and the sickening ideology that’s infested his books, speeches, and minions.

If you want to relate BDS with any criticism of Obama and the post we are both referring to, then you are just as clueless as the author. In other words, the BDS BS won’t work with me, so you are wasting your time.

BTW, what was the “nasty” name you referred to?

I am no longer a registered Republican as of three days after the elections. Y’all can ROT. And you will.

Thanks a lot.
I’ve been a Republican all my life and will stay one.
I didn’t feel bad about the GOP after the election because McCain wasn’t really a Republican (sorry, wise_man, but he’s not), but Sarah Palin is and so is my Congressman, Pete Sessions, and so are my Senators, Cornyn and Hutchison.
We Republicans will most certainly not “rot,” but will thrive while we are the Loyal Opposition and will come back strong in 2010 and 2012.
Conservative and Republican ideas and our platform for American leadership are things that will always be productive, positive and inspirational.
No rot is ever involved; indeed, we cherish the values of our Founding Fathers.
Asking for us to “rot” is to ask for America herself to rot–no, ma’am.

progressoverpeace on January 20, 2009 at 6:20 PM

Examples, words, evidence, philosophies, etc.. don’t matter to these people. In the OP and in the defenders of it, you will see talk about “hope” that Obama won’t really act on his core ideology and that the reality of governing will sink in. And even if he tries, he may fail or it can be fixed later. They want to be part of the “hope and change” thing, and give Marxism, socialism, or tyranny-lite a chance. Deep-down, they really aren’t afraid of it (or don’t really understand how these political ideologies gain ground.)

Who’s “we”? and where’s this “opposition” that you speak of?

Are you referring to the fierce debates on how much bailout money to dole out, or what type of shamnesty bill they’ll pass, or which industry to nationalize first? The silent RINO cowards are on-board. It’s just how far they will go. They can’t even stick to “drill here, drill now” for more than a few weeks. It’s going to take a massive overhaul, and a good beginning was the lack of support for McCain and his ilk. Other than that, I haven’t even seen the beginnings of a change, other than debating how RINO’s should become even more moderate (liberal).

Jenfidel on January 20, 2009 at 8:32 PM

Oh, come on. His conservative score of 82.16% is based on his votes. It’s not like he’s got a score of 50% and it a ‘glass is half full or half empty’ discussion here. Dennis Kucinich’s ‘conservative’ score as rated by his votes is 9.73%, He doesn’t claim to be a republican and his voting history of being 90% against us speaks for itself. Feinstein & Boxer’s score is 9.40% and 3.04%, as expected. Senator Barrasso from Wyoming has a score recorded of 100%. Pretty impressive. And McCain? again, as his voting record shows, over eighty percent. I understand the ‘McCain isn’t conservative enough’ and the ‘I wish he took out all the stops including claiming that Obama was a muslim’ thoughts around here, but get real. If the republican party wanted to kick him out, then they’d do so, just like the democrats did to Joe Lieberman, who’s score is 16.38%, by the way. I know to some liberal democrats, that Barak Obama ( 7.67% or 92.33% liberal, if you want to look at it that way ) isn’t liberal enough for them, but it’s not factually correct to call McCain a democrat, or – not republican, just because this is the fashionable thing to do these days.

Oh, come on. His conservative score of 82.16% is based on his votes.

Dude give it up. McCain has not been a conservative for a long, long time.

From American Thinker:

Senator John McCain’s lifetime rating of 82.3% from the American Conservative Union is often cited as proof that he is conservative. Here is a closer look at that 82.3 rating.

First, a rating of 82.3 is not really that high. It puts Senator McCain in 39th place among senators serving in 2006, the latest year for which the ACU has its ratings posted online. For that most recent year in particular, McCain scored only 65, putting him in 47th place for that year. Ben Nelson (D-NE) and Chuck Hagel (R-NE), for example, scored 64 and 75, respectively, in 2006.

Generally, McCain has voted less conservatively in more recent years. His average for 1990-97 was 88, but was only 74 for 1998-2006.

That dude works? I figured he was a charter member of the Government Cheese Line of the Week Attendees Club.

Considering the total whorehouse W inherited from Clinton he has done superbly preventing a recurrence of 9/11.

viking01 on January 20, 2009 at 10:02 PM

First, a rating of 82.3 is not really that high.

yeah, some other dude got 100%. Pretty spiffy, no?

But like I said, it’s 80%. Not to shabby. Scores as a “B”. Not an F. Not a D. Or a C.

wise_man on January 20, 2009 at 10:04 PM

Generally, McCain has voted less conservatively in more recent years. His average for 1990-97 was 88, but was only 74 for 1998-2006.

OH MY GOD!!! 74???? THAT’S LIKE – ABOUT FIVE POINTS BELOW EIGHTY! THAT’S PRACTICALLY DENNIS KUCINICH TERRITORY!!!!!one!!/

wise_man on January 20, 2009 at 10:07 PM

wise_man,

It is not that high relatively speaking. His score was 39th in 2006. This was when Republicans had 55. Which means he was 39th out of 55 Republicans. Which means that 71% of Republicans were rated higher. Which means he gets an F-.

wise_man,

Oh so that is thew criteria for GOP candidates according to RINOs like wise_man…they have to be more conservative than Kucinich.

Man is this country fooked.

progressoverpeace…

You missing the point. And there is nothing I could say to help you realize your bad manners. But let me try. There are many decisions and choices that Obama will make and have nothing to do with his ideology. For instance, Obama will be responsible for hiring thousands of people who will work in jobs throughout the government. It would be nice to hope that he does well hiring the right people. Obama has also noted that he is sending more troops into Afganistan. Is it okay to wish him well on that mission, or should I hope he fails there? Of yeah, he will be making hundreds of decisions that will affect the economy. Is it okay to wish him well in making those decisions? Or should I hope the economy goes in the tank so you can be happy?

how would I know if Obama is a socialist or not, little mouse? I don’t know him or worked on his behalf.

So why don’t you answer the question, madison?

wise_man on January 20, 2009 at 10:47 PM

Hey madison, so when ed said that “For those who see no difference between McCain and the two Democrats, this serves as a reminder that while McCain drifts to the middle on some issues, a large chasm exists between the nominees that will face off in November.” do you agree with ed or not?

wise_man on January 20, 2009 at 10:48 PM

Since I only have an afternoon class to teach at UC-Irvine, I was able to watch almost all of the festivities on TV from out here in Southern California. Now, at the end of the day, I want to write down my thoughts.

Though I am an Obama critic, there is nothing negative I can say about him tonight. He and Michelle have acquitted themselves beautifully today and with great grace. His speech was not the usual stem winder, rather it was short, sober and succinct. He is my president now, and in a time of great challenge for our nation, I wish him well. I can only hope that he will steer a middle course. If he does, I think he can have a successful presidency. We should all hope that his is a successful presidency. Does that mean I won’t criticize him when I think appropriate? No, I will continue to exercise my freedom of speech, which this great country allows us to do.

Nevertheless, this was an historic day, and what left the most lasting impression on me was seeing the expressions on the faces of so many African-Americans in the crowd in Washington. One cannot help but be touched by that sight and what President Barack Obama means to them. I hope he will not let them down. Black America has so many challenges, but if this gives them the feeling that they can indeed make it in our country, then who can feel bad about that? Perhaps this will refute the messages of people like Louis Farrakhan, Jeremiah Wright and the New Black Panther Party. But who knows? Tonight Washington DC is a city celebrating across all racial lines. Can it last?

As I write this, I just watched him at the Commander-in-Chief Ball talking via satellite with a group of Illinois soldiers serving in Afghanistan and polling them on the important question-were they Cub fans or White Sox fans? (Obama is a White Sox fan.) Being a Cub fan, it brought a smile to my usually cynical face-especially when most of the troops said they were Cub fans.

There were a couple of bad moments. Of course, the first was the seizure of Senator Ted Kennedy that necessitated taking him to the hospital. Sadly, as President Bush appeared on the dais for the swearing-in ceremony, some nitwits on the west side of the Capitol began chanting that stupid “Na na, na na- hey, hey,hey-goodbye” chant. Bush, in his always graceful manner, ignored them. This is the man who had eggs thrown at his car in the first inaugural in 2001. This is the man who for eight years was called every name in the book by his political opponents. Today, as always, he bore it with dignity.

In that same vein, the incident was reported by some reporter for National Public Radio (NPR) with some degree of amusement. This from that “non-partisan”, publicly funded radio channel. And just last night on MSNBC, that jerk Keith Olbermann was again calling on Obama to prosecute Bush for war crimes and conducting torture of the poor terrorist Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (he was waterboarded).

Then there was Her Royal Highness, Hillary Clinton, button-holing Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) at the luncheon in the Rotunda and engaging him in a heated conversation as to why he was insisting on an open debate and up or down vote on her confirmation hearing-as opposed to a rubber stamp acclamation. (Cornyn is concerned about the conflict of interest issue-as he and everybody else should be.)

But enough of the negative. I won’t even go into a discussion of that awful “poet”, Elizabeth Alexander and her rambling whatever-it-was she read. I had never heard of her, so I did a little Googling, and….if you’ve never read any of her “poetry”….you don’t want to.

But enough of the negative. Congratulations to President Obama. What this remarkable man has accomplished is mind-boggling, and I wish him well in his presidency. This country needs him to be successful. I am not so jubilant about him as millions of others, but anyone who loves their country has to wish him well.

MadisonConservative on January 20, 2009 at 10:53 PM

Is this the new litmus test? First you have to hate McCain.

And second, you have to pledge to all that is conservative that Obama is a socialist?

And third, you need to refuse to answer questions about ed disagreeing with you and change the subject and then claim that someone who disagrees with you now disagrees with everyone and is willfuly ignorant, so sayeth the little mouse?

Frankly, those numbers aren’t very telling in my opinion. The reason why McCain annoys me is because he is bitter over his failed Presidential run in 2000. He’s also apparently bitter over his 2008 effort, which is why he is dumping on Sarah Palin.

I’m not a rabid conservative Frankly, I’m probably more moderate than many people who post here (except the trolls). My mom is a bilingual teacher, so I’m for some sort of compromise on immigration and I’m fairly libertarian when it comes to social issues. One of my fav. politicos is my local Congressman, Mark Kirk, a moderate Republican who will hopefully be the next Senator from IL. :) I even voted for McCain in the primary after Giuliani fizzled. However, that was mainly a vote against Romney more than a vote for McCain. I just really have an issue with phonies or people who bring their personal issues into the public arena. Politics ain’t beanbag and people who enter the arena should realize that. For whatever reason, McCain doesn’t.

Why didn’t they write some remarks for him to make at these balls? Barack Morona is revealing just how worthless he is without a script x10 tonight. Though I can’t blame them for not being able to stomach sifting through the footage, I really hope someone has a highlight real of all of his “you made this possible” comments that made absolutely no sense, and how clever he thinks he is when he says “Michelle Obama, who does everything I do, except in heels”. What exactly do you do, Community Organizer in Chief, sir? Hang out with terrorists and Hamas spokespeople? Attend anti-white, anti-US, racist churches? Say that courts should be ruling on income redistribution? Eh, you probably just meant peeing standing up.

Personally, Ed Morrissey and all the other apologists at hotair.com, I hope Mr. Obama fails and fails miserably. Socialism must not succeed in any shape or form in this United States of America.

long_cat on January 21, 2009 at 12:53 AM

Obama tanked the stock market in his first 1/2 day in office.

All his fault.

How will we survive the awful Obama economy, the worst economy since the depresion, where jobs are being lost by the thousands every day while he parties with his friends in lavish style, all paid for by Banks using TARP funds.
The culture of corruption of the Obama administration makes me sick!

Worst President ever!

quax1 on January 21, 2009 at 3:55 AM

Yeah the stock market says it all. It went right into the garbage. All the cheering going on and with every word the incoming Prez said I watched the market tick down and down and down. Oh its ok as long as BO is in office. lol. More kool-aid please.
