After this, I’m looking forward to the Super Bowl hype
posted at 8:38 am on January 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Inaugurals are a time for celebration for all Americans. We celebrate the peaceful transition between executives and the ability of ordinary citizens to choose our leader, even when our choice doesn’t win. While it is no longer unique, our tradition of citizen governance goes back over 200 years and remains vital and strong, and Americans take pride in it. Events such as inaugurals allow us to do so publicly.
That being said, inaugurals are as to presidencies as weddings are to marriages. Ultimately, outside of the symbolic transfer of power, it’s nothing but a big party — and some parties go on waaaaaaaaaaay too long and get taken waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too seriously. Unfortunately, there’s been no escape, and I for one will be very, very happy when it’s over.
Or will it ever be over? I was watching the AFC Championship game on CBS on Sunday, and noticed that they have a new theme for all of their new show promos. Matt Lewis took a screencap:

Notice the Obama logo for the CBS Eye? Notice the “Yes We Can Monday”? If the entire network plans its success around Obama, what does that have to say about its news division? Unfortunately, nothing we don’t already know.
And I thought Super Bowl hype was bad! I’m actually looking forward to the commercial overkill about something other than Obama. Or … maybe not:

Yet another reason to root for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
I’m inauguraled out. HBO had at least one channel of constant coverage all weekend long, and some cable broadcasters matched them minute for minute. ESPN, which one might think would be a haven from politics, kept offering “perspectives” on Obama’s victory. I’ll be doing my best to avoid any more of the fawning and flatulence of today’s events. Maybe by next week, people will have gotten a king-sized grip on themselves and all of this nonsense will have disappeared.

Cards are the underdogs – again. Which is just how they want it.

Our household has studiously avoided anything having to do with the Immaculate Coronation. The moment Bambi’s face appears or a newscaster begins to fawn, the channel changes or the tube goes blank. Right now, I’m listening to some cool jazz sounds on the digital music channel, although I’m thinking about changing it to the standards channel to listen to some Frankie or Deano or Tony or Ella for a change of pace or maybe put on some big band or blues…
The Rat Pack in their prime in Vegas–now that’s some hope and change I could go for.
Matt Helm on January 20, 2009 at 8:44 AM
The friggin’ Disney Channel was all inaugural stuff, too.

Why would a television network base ads on the successful campaign of a wildly popular politician? This is crazy talk!
They should make ads featuring George W Bush, he of the 30% approval rating, instead.

Last time the Cards won a championship they were in Chicago. Can Chicago fans claim a victory if the Cards win? You know they’re gonna take credit for Obama – at least for a little while.
Tommy_G on January 20, 2009 at 8:44 AM
Is that an official Cardinals poster or logo or did someone make it on their own. I’m not giving up on my team either way, but I am wondering where the logo came from. The top says “Obamicon.me.” So I’m thinkin’ (hopin”) this isn’t official or team sanctioned. Please tell me I’m right!

I’m not inauguraled out, mostly because I have fastidiously refused to hear a single word anyone has said – “La, la, la I can’t hear you!” type of thing – since last Friday.
The weekend orgy of Obama-knobbing by the various media sycophants and idol worshippers have had no effect on me. The result has been that Tuesday is here and I don’t hate Obama yet. Nice.

This is what happens when our candidates stop being patriots and start become America Idol contestants. These years of the personality cult worship will be remembered as America’s darkest days since the debauchery of the 70′s. Thank God we have our current generation of military personnel and other patriots to keep the dream alive for their kids and grand kids. They will be the ones to fix this mess and put the Oslime-a years in it’s soon to be infamous perspective.

This morning, I was flipping channels hoping for some information on the storm heading my way. Every single channel I landed on was talking about the inauguration. Popped it to Nick for the kids, and it was a commercial about the inauguration done by children that act on that channel. I would have thrown the remote at the tv and unplugged the damn thing, but it’s a snow day (and the kids will watch tv while I nurse my migraine).
Damn pre-emptive school closures, damn the snowstorm that has yet to snow, and damn the wall-to-wall inaugural love-fest. I celebrate the smooth transition of power, but this is beyond being “too much.”
Oh, and the husband is super miffed about Bal’more loosing. They sucked, though, hardcore. So we can’t even look forward to the Superbowl. :(

Unfortunately the O-bots in the populace and the media won’t let that happen…

Sad thing is Mr. Rooney gave Obama a Steeler Jersey. I am from Steeltown and they are Democrats through and through regardless of policy. So the Cards playing the Obama artwork is nothing. The cards are going to get their feathers clipped anyway in the superbowl. Steelers are the best team period. Our D is going to smoke Old man Warner. We are going top get our 6th piece of jewelry and we are going to be called the greatest franchise in NFL history. Well we are the greatest. No flash No bragging. WE ARE the Steelers. Enough said.

I tested myself this morning to see if I could stomach any of the coverage and while flipping channels I heard some fool on MSNBC excitedly talking about the moving trucks pulling into the White House and how they have been spackling the walls and repainting for Obamas arrival. The worst part was when he said he wished he could have been there to see them spackle. This is a new low for the media- turned on by watching Obama’s paint dry.

The lefties are going to be in for a HUGE disappointment over Obama in the next couple years. More so than the right will. It’ll come as no surprise when “The One” turns his back on the masses who elected him.

I couldn’t care less about the Super Bowl. I hate the city of Pittsburgh, (which I refer to as Shittsburgh) and the Cardinals beat my Eagles, (now my FORMER Eagles as I WILL NOT support them next year or probably ever again. I’ve had it with them and their knocking at the door but not walking in) so I really don’t care about the game.

Ironic that Obarfy will have to congratulate the Super Bowl champions from the state of bitter clingers. Who knew that people who cling to guns and Bibles would have time for football?
Oh, and whichever Steeler yells “I’m going to Disneyland!”, one word of advice: Don’t. California sold DL to the Chinese to pay off its debts.

Despite the guy’s politics, or what effect his pending presidency will have on our country, I think it is important to at a minimum appreciate the historical nature of what today means for so much of our population. Despite not agreeing with Obama politically, I am at least going to celebrate today as a step forward in our country’s history because even in the worst case scenario where he does everything wrong and is the worst president of all time, today is still significant in terms of its impact on the racial history and progress of our country. This is a remarkable day, especially for those which was still fighting segregation within the current generation.

AS I AM FORCING MYSELF TO WATCH THE TRAIN WRECK THAT IS THE COVERAGE I NOTICED AS THE OBAMAS WERE WALKING INTO ST.JOHN’S>>>>>>>>>>>>
MICHELLE IS WEARING BODY ARMOR.
She has a very small upper body in relation to her big backside, and as a woman, I know how clothes are meant to hide flaws. There is a noticeable RIDGE around her back braline >>>>>body armor.
NO WONDER THEY WERE SO LATE COMING OUT. That stuff takes some WORK to get into. Especially for a WOMAN WHO IS HESITANT TO WEAR IT.
GOD BLESS AMERICA. PEACE BE WITH THEM. WITH US ALL.
seejanemom on January 20, 2009 at 9:03 AM
I noticed those TV ads, too. Glad I don’t watch any of them anyway. Besides, Dish Network and the local CBS channel are in a price dispute, so we can’t get CBS unless we hook up our rabbit ears (which was done to watch the game.) If we can’t find a box, the rabbit ears won’t work soon anyway, so I can care less what CBS does. Only good thing on CBS was CSI, and even that I didn’t watch on a regular basis.

There is never a reason to cheer for the Steelers. Doesn’t mean they aren’t going to win, but I’ll not root for them. I don’t really have anything against the players, but that organization has been making me mad for as long as I can remember.
Go Cards. Kurt Warner wins, and he’s going to the Hall of Fame. His life is the stuff from which movies are made. Fitzgerald is a beast. James needs a ring from team he actually played for.

I’m tired of it too.
I can certainly admire the strides in electing this fellow and I hope he surprises me when he’s President.
But I have a sinking feeling that he is going to be exactly what I think he’s going to be.
So all I can do is wish him luck. He’s going to need it.

Agreed O1! But, I while I will not question Mr. Morrissey’s allegiance to the Steelers, his choice of the Cardinal’s logo screams of bias and deception. Inauguration Day, by Nethicus
At 7 in the morn
A lovely Tuesday began
I turned on the news
To hear about Iran.
Instead ’twas coverage
Of the Inauguration Day
Of Obama the Ascendant
Showing America “the Way”.
I flipped and I flipped
Almost spilling my joe
Could there be a news channel
without the coverage of O?
CNN to FOX to Headline News–
All on D.C. and the fest.
Even TBS, Noggin and Nick
I couldn’t find any rest!
I turned off the tube and
Made Cheerios my breakfast.
Little O’s stared back at me
Even my meal was messed!
I thought to myself
Solace in the internet there’ll be!
But Yahoo, Google, Memeorandum
All Obama– they betrayed me!
There is one place I knew
Where I could get away
One place Obama’s time
Could carry no sway.
I surfed and found it
Relieved and relaxed.
Interent pornography
My patience ne’er be taxed.
I sat back with a grin
The vixen greeting her beau
Then terror gripped me
She said, “Hi, President ‘O’!”
I shut down my lappy
Calling in sick to my work.
I crawled into bed
Before I did go berserk.
FInally a calm did come
That Wednesday after all
“Four years of peace
Before another Inauguration Ball.”

Obama will fall to earth soon enough. The media is dying. The 48% of voters who did not vote for Obama are (like me, I imagine) tuning out the hype as much as possible. Let the Obama-ites have their celebration, let the beltway RINO media join in — I really don’t care anymore. Reality will hit soon, and hard, enough.
For more sober-minded perspective, both Mona Charen and Melanie Philips have good articles on the reality Obama faces once the Immaculation is over. Both are posted over at Lucianne.com — just scroll down.

I felt a song in my heart today that I wanted to share with my HotAir friends. I hope-n-change you like it…
“If tomorrow all the things were gone I’d worked for all my life,” (actually happens today at 12:01pm)
“And I had to start again, with just my children and my wife.” (foreclosures, high unemployment, massive taxes)
“I’d thank my lucky stars to be living here today,” (today yes, tomorrow?)
“Where the flag still stands for freedom,” (changes 12:01pm 1/20/2009, Bill Ayers)
“And they can’t take that away.” (fairness doctrine, gay marriage, living Constitution, radicals on the Courts)
“And I’m proud to be an American,” (“I’ve never been proud of my Country”, 1st Lady Obamamomma)
“Where at least I know I’m free.” (to pay higher taxes, send my kids to failing schools, forced to join a union)
“Where I won’t forget the men who died,” (”The war is lost”, “Or troops are raiding villages and killing civilians”, “the Surge is a failure”, “Bush lied, people died”)
“Who gave that right to me.” (Gitmo to close, terrorists to go free, pre-9/11 mentality returns)
“And I’d gladly stand up, next to you,” (openly gays in the military, defense spending cuts)
“And defend her still today.” (The Bill of Rights, The Constitution, 2nd Amendment rights)
“Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land.” (actually not sure BHO was even born here, but he is his babies Daddy)
“God bless the USA!” (can we still say God? can’t in schools, parks, public buildings)
Wow, I can’t wait till I have more time to work on the second verse… My creative juices are flowing, much like the stream coursing down Chris Matthews’s leg. It must be all the good vibes and kumbiyah feelings emanating from DC today. But… But… Wait… Hold on…. I feel… I feel…
Sorry, never mind, it was just a gas pain…

My Reply:
With the exception of a few moments after 9/11, Democrats and their liberal media’s mission was nothing short of a political public execution of a Republican President. “Civility” never entered the minds of a party that spewed lies and distortions in their continuous campaign to beat down a leader who’s number one priority became “how to protect this nation from another attack. “Choosing to throw mud”, dear whatiheard, is an art perfected by many that should look in the mirror.

Two points on the Inauguration/Super Bowl theme.
1) Does it seem like Obama is being named MVP before the game even begins? Hasn’t even played a down yet but they are handing him the trophy.
2) How many references will we be hit with referencing Pat Tillman, the former Cardinals player turned Ranger who died as the result of a friendly fire incident?

Part of me really wishes that I could celebrate the inauguaration of the first black president–but I can’t.

As for Obama, I’m pulling for the hype to be over very soon. He’s never accomplished much in office and before you know it, he’ll disappoint as there is no higher office for him to seek. He will have to work this time or I guess he can just be a figure head like the Queen of England. That would probably suit him better, but the incongruity between Obama’s flowery words and the Reid/Pelosi slop machine will soon sicken America.
Anyway, Princess Barack is here for four looooong years.
clnurnberg on January 20, 2009 at 9:51 AM
The Obamunation is mainly a celebration by the Media of themselves and their (probably correct) impression that they still have the power to swing a Presidential Election.
The antidote: stay off the newschannels, do not buy newspapers, disparage their competence and professionalism to your friends and family, and generally do your part daily to drive them all out of business.

Wildly popular? At what, 70%?
Obama got less votes than Bush did in 2004. Wildly popular? You certainly dream, don’t you.
Minus the snow, I’m completely with you. My own company will be showing the inauguration address and forced me to write a description of the parade (I head a team of people who write descriptions of television programing for a TV information company, though I rarely write the descriptions myself anymore).
And of course news outlets can’t let this historic occasion go by without a few jabs at Bush.
Esthier on January 20, 2009 at 10:02 AM
The antidote to Obama worship will be the reality of his “historic” Presidency and the quotidian details. The sun will not shine more brightly, the birds will not sing more prettily, the world will not do what he says and peace will not reign.
Soon the media will not be able to put the shine back on the Christmas toy they lured us (well not me,I was a Romney supporter)to buy, the celebutards will forget their silly promises and snort some coke, and people will realize that they elected an empty vessel and a hyper-lib, to boot.
The silly celebration will not last forever. He cannot deliver on the hype.

Only to those who still believed this day would never happen, and yet we were so anxious for a black man in the White House that we didn’t bother to get one who actually knows what he’s doing. I fail to see what’s remarkable about that.

When Obama takes the Oath of Office, *dies a little inside just typing it* and the crowd goes into its worshipping frenzy, a huge cloud covers the sun, a rumbling thunderous voice cries out, “I am the Lord, your GOD! Thou shalt have no god before me!” And then the lightning bolts start. The press’s microphones melt, camera’s explode and the media’s vans are rendered smoldering pools of molten steel…
It is a good dream. *sigh*

AZCoyote on January 20, 2009 at 10:20 AM
Roethlisberger gets religious at times.
A perspective:
It has been my experience that the more popular a fashion is at one time, the more it is detested at a later date.
Wasn’t President Peanut Marvel at 70% at one time?
IlikedAUH2O on January 20, 2009 at 10:31 AM
Plunkett at his best was nowhere near Kurt in the “Greatest Show on Turf” days. Kurt is a two-time MVP with three Super Bowl appearances. Sunday’s game got him in.

Tryin’ to catch a lurid booty shot of The Cheetah Girls, huh?
The Race Card on January 20, 2009 at 10:42 AM
My wife said last night. ‘This feels like a party that we were not invited too’ I said if you think about it, this is a party that we would’t want to got to. The honeymoon will be over by July. I guess she felt a little left out, but as we talked more, I realized that she was more incensed by the sheer overkill of the coronation that actually not being invited.
GW never had this king of hype. If you tell me it’s because The Obananator is Afrimerican I’ll say BUNK. Ever since I grew up in the 60s I was taught by the same media through watching the boobtoob that skin color should not matter now, all of a sudden, the same purveyors of tolerance and affirmitive action(the media) make his skin color the main point to his presidency.
As far as the Steelers are concerned, I Bleed Black and Gold. I remember going to games when they played at Pitt Staduim on cardiac hill in the Oakland section. I’m Pi$$ed the Dan Rooney brought politics to this years team. I veiw sports as an escape. I guess I’ll need to be patient and wait for this “Yes we can” crap (thanks e-pirate never saw that graphic before I almost puked) to blow over.
Steelers go for the six-pack. Prediction Steelers 28 Cardinals 14
Burgher on January 20, 2009 at 10:46 AM
All I’m saying is that regardless of whether he knows what he is doing or not, this IS a significant day. Obama is the first black president, whether you like it or not. For the black community, and for many others, that has a profound meaning — no matter what he does with his time in office — this bit of history has now already been made.
I don’t understand what is confusing about that. Legalized segregation finally ended in 1968. That is not long ago, and to move from a point where blacks and whites could not drink out of the same water fountain to a point where there is a black president is an insanely huge step for those people that were fighting against segregation only 40 years ago. I’m sure none of them ever expected this to happen in their lifetimes.
All I’m saying is that politics aside, and future of the country aside, let us at least pause to appreciate what this means for the racial storyline of our country, one that has largely defined us throughout our 200+ years and so deserves a basic amount of notice and appreciation.
Ferris on January 20, 2009 at 10:47 AM
I “Hope and Changed” my daughter this morning and she gave me pretty much what I will probably get from Obama’s “Hope and Change”.
Straight to the garbage can.
At least I have something to cheer me today, my beloved hometown team is going to it’s 7th Super Bowl. I am truly blessed to be born in Pittsburgh and to be a fan of this team.
Helps that the Cards have probably the worst defense in Super Bowl History. My prediction – Steelers 35 – Cards 21 with a couple of late garbage TDs for the Cards.
NoDonkey on January 20, 2009 at 10:54 AM
There were lots of glowing MSM stories about Carter in the beginning. He was a Washington outsider, untouched by the rampant corruption in D.C;, he was a pious Sunday School teacher with high morals who wouldn’t dream of lying to us the way Nixon had done; and he was a super-smart nuclear engineer, who wouldn’t embarrass us with his dumbness the way Ford had done.
A few years later, the MSM was openly mocking him.
AZCoyote on January 20, 2009 at 10:54 AM
I didn’t catch your edit.
I’m sorry, but the election of this man is not at all proof that we’ve judged a man for his character rather than the color of his skin. Had he been qualified, this day would mean something.
Esthier on January 20, 2009 at 10:55 AM
Not likely.
And if you poll the players on either team, they’re pretty much all Obama supporters so perhaps you can find another sport for of GOP supporters.
Golf maybe? Golfer seem like nice guys, but the sport makes me snore.
GO STEELERS!
NoDonkey on January 20, 2009 at 10:57 AM
That’s debatable. Warner appeared in an anti-stem cell ad along with several other famous conservatives. That doesn’t mean he didn’t support Obama, but it certainly makes it less likely.
Esthier on January 20, 2009 at 10:59 AM
I see it like this. Our political leadership has been become more and more lightweight over the years. Even those people whom I perceive as qualified seem to revel and bathe themselves in trivial considerations.
I think it is just a serendipitous moment in American history that happens to coincide with the election of the first African-American POTUS.
I’m fairly disappointed with all of American politics. I think that Republicans could easily have elected someone just as unqualified based on cult-of-personality. Mitt Rommney, upon further consideration and in comparison to Sarah Palin seems like a political featherweight. At one point, I had hoped he would be our candidate, but I think he’s milquetoast too.
We are a fickle nation…until our next 9/11.
The Race Card on January 20, 2009 at 11:03 AM
I see where you are coming from, and I agree that it would have been a great thing for the first black president to truly have the support of the entire nation. I completely agree with you re: his politics as his policies and inexperience scare the crap out of me. I’m just trying to focus on it one level below that, I suppose, so as appreciate the day.
Ferris on January 20, 2009 at 11:03 AM
Good Lord! You’re more depressing than Sylvia Plath on her period.
The Race Card on January 20, 2009 at 11:05 AM
And the first half certainly guarantees the second.
I get that intellectually.
Esthier on January 20, 2009 at 11:07 AM
And I agree with both of you.

Vince on January 20, 2009 at 11:13 AM
I posted about this yesterday.
What was really bad was we were treated to a “Inaugural Update” during the damn Steelers/Ravens halftime show by the perky Katie Couric.
I tuned in to watch some damn footbal. Instead I was love bombed about Obama.
catmman on January 20, 2009 at 11:16 AM
Just like the constant hammering of “men are evil, and global warming is destroying the planet”? I think we are in for a long 4 years of hero worship.
So, even if Barack messes up big time, it won’t matter, because he has all the willing accomplices in the press on his side, just like Jimmah Carter had.
kirkill on January 20, 2009 at 11:17 AM
Well, maybe he’ll make like Carter and leave after four years.
Esthier on January 20, 2009 at 11:26 AM
If they want to lower the ratings they’ll keep this crap up.
roux on January 20, 2009 at 11:57 AM
The heard (ESPN Radio) just had a clip from the “inaugeration”
Shaq sings: duh duh da duh duh
Obama: Can you diiiiggg ittt
I don’t think he is a fan. Unlike the rest of ABC/disney owned enterprise that is ESPN.
cobrakai99 on January 20, 2009 at 11:59 AM
Before I read it, I thought you were pointing something else out about the CBS promo:
Maybe I just have a sick mind.
OneGyT on January 20, 2009 at 11:59 AM
You are aware that there are 106 players between the two teams?
I would be astonished if even 20% of the players voted for McCain. Most of them probably didn’t even vote.
This effort to inject politics into EVERYTHING is one thing that’s perpetually annoying about the left.
And one thing great about sports is that’s it’s politics free, let’s keep it that way.
NoDonkey on January 20, 2009 at 12:22 PM
Gee, I may have ovaries, but I think I understand the basics of football.
Except you really have no idea. I used Warner, not to prove they’re all Republicans but just to prove that fact, that you don’t know.
You’re the one saying we need to find a GOP sport. I’d be completely fine with leaving politics out of it. Tell that to ESPN and GOLF.
Esthier on January 20, 2009 at 12:28 PM
37 year old white guy describes about one of the players, Kurt Warner so he’s what we would call in statistics, an “outlier”.
Yes, if you’re so obsessed with politics that you have a need to find a political reason to root for one team over the other.
If you have perspective, enjoy the game for what it is – a game between a johnny come lately, fluke franchise in a transient city and football royalty.
Go Steelers!
