Schools close when fuel turns to goo

When we first moved to Minnesota, the Mathemagician was 13 years old and not happy about having to start all over again in a new school system. We tried cheering him up by telling him that schools close on heavy snow days, but as it turned out, the Mathemagician got one day off from school for weather the entire time he attended school in Minnesota. The state does too good of a job in clearing roads and getting kids on the bus to let it interfere with their education.
Last Friday, kids got another rare day off due to the weather. Actually, the weather was just the indirect cause. The real problem? Biodiesel fuel:
All schools in the Bloomington School District will be closed today after state-required biodiesel fuel clogged in school buses Thursday morning and left dozens of students stranded in frigid weather, the district said late Thursday.
Rick Kaufman, the district’s spokesman, said elements in the biodiesel fuel that turn into a gel-like substance at temperatures below 10 degrees clogged about a dozen district buses Thursday morning. Some buses weren’t able to operate at all and others experienced problems while picking up students, he said.
“We had students at bus stops longer than we think is acceptable, and that’s too dangerous in these types of temperatures,” Kaufman said.
About 50 of the district’s 10,000 students were affected. Some waited at bus stops for up to 30 minutes; others were stuck on stalled buses.
Backup buses were sent out, but four of the district’s 10 backup buses were also affected, Kaufman said.
The Russians discovered the problem with diesel fuel during World War II. In cold weather, the fuel in the tanks solidified, making them both useless and defenseless. The Americans stuck with gasoline, which had bigger safety problems but proved reliable for combat.
Apparently, biodiesel makes the problem worse. The school district tried getting a waiver from the state to allow their buses to use regular diesel fuel, to no avail. Instead, buses stalled throughout the district and across the state. Children had to be treated for hypothermia by school nurses after either waiting for buses that arrived far too late in -20F weather or on buses that stalled and whose heaters don’t function without running engines.
This is an absurd requirement for school buses in a state that sees these kinds of low temperatures every year. If the fuel cannot be used in -20F weather, then we should be using fuel that works when it gets that cold. Having school children stand or sit in that kind of weather for any extended period of time is dangerous. To think that using a politically-correct form of fuel is more important than their safety or education demonstrates an obtuseness that simply boggles the mind.
Update: I misremembered the tanks issue; according to several e-mailers, it was the Russians that had the problems with diesel, not the Germans, who did use gasoline.

But it’s better for the environment, and that matters much more than our children. If we don’t care about or children in the womb, why would care for them outside of it?

Come on, Ed. Biodiesel saves the planet. Kids getting hypothermia is just a minor distraction. To make a global warming omelette, you have to break a few eggs. They’re just children, after all.

That’s weird. In Alaska they use diesel, but they have heaters and the like. And when it gets really cold, its better just to leave your car running. (Most of the diesels had a super-low idle mode that they’d eventually drop into.)
Bio-diesel does make these problems worse, but I didn’t realize it was that bad. Causing a running bus to stall out? Yikes.
Yeah, ixnay on THAT tech.

But what do you expect from folks who will vote for Franken (or allow his cheat-till-you-win tactics to prevail). And BTW, how many of these folks who are freezing in the dark are adamant against global warming and have bought Al Gore’s lie? And don’t forget that in Liberaland, safety of kids is secondary to saving the Timber Wolf!

Expect more of this kind of thing all over now that Dems are in charge of every branch of federal government and making fast headway in dominating more state and local governments as well.
Remember, it’s all “for the children.” Those kids and their parents should understand while they wait in -20F weather that it’s their future the government is protecting. They would be too dumb to look out for their own futures. They’d make choices like saving a few little frostbitten fingers over fighting climate change with biodiesel fuels. Those fascist anti-environment kids are probably thinking a little global warming would be nice right about now…

I are a good leader for Minnesota. Deaths have been minimized in our transition to useless fuels. My opponents plan would have resulted in a higher total number of deaths from rising sea levels. I’m sure a remedy will be to fine the parents and charge them with abuse! That’s how our government works today.
it’s like with the front airbags killing people. years ago I watched government films made from the 70’s on the danger frontal airbags held for children and small adults. I watched these crash tests where child sized dummies had their necks broken by the air bags. Same films the government watched. Result?? Mandate the front airbags but never tell of the dangers. So years later, as child deaths start to pile up from these airbags,, who does the government blame?? Parents for putting their kids in the front seat.

Actually, the wackos think this is just fine. When it gets too cold (from runaway global warming) the fuel will gel and you can’t burn it in an internal combustion engine, thus stopping the horrible cycle of runaway expansion of man’s carbon footprint. And, the added bonus is scores of little earth destroyers perish in sub-zero temps, thus reverting back to the natural cycle of bio-decomposition and are thereby stopped from consuming precious natural resources. See?! Biodiesel is a PERFECT fuel!

Here is a question that is sort of off topic of freezing school buses. Those pinwheel air turbines, you know, one of our nation’s future alternative energy sources, how are they going to respond in freezing tempatures? Is there a chance they might freeze up also, thereby causing power outages? So that no matter what, kids have a choice of freezing, by waiting for a bus that never comes, on a bus that stalls, or they can freeze at home or in school. Which decision will it be?

For normal diesel there is an anti-gel that works down to -25°F. I wonder if it works for bio D? The truckers are using Bio D in some states. May bee they found the same tking out. Jet fuel is refined diesel, and they don’t have the problem. Additives? they need to look into that pronto!

The lesson learned here is; don’t let childrens’ lives get in the way of our global warming hysteria…we need to save the planet from us humans and if that means killing off *your* kids, then we’ll do it, by golly!
On a related note, we’ll sacrifice **millions** of African lives in order to prevent a “Silent Spring”…you know, don’t spray DDT because it thins the eggshells of some frickin’ birds.
Thousands of years from now, some alien species will probably land here and wonder how our civilization died out. Envirokooks will be the answer, but they’ll never find out about that.

I feel sorry for the kids of course. That being said, I mostly feel deep schadenfreude, and emotion I’m not proud of.
Here in Lynn Woolseyland, there’s a public airhead who styles herself “Betty Biodiesel”. A few years ago she proudly converted a new diesel VW to biodiesel, and blew every seal in it 40,000 miles later.
I found this deeply satisfying, to my dismay….
warbaby on January 19, 2009 at 4:03 PM
Using biodiesel for the reasons liberals like (e.g. fighting “global warming”) is absurd, but I am a fan of biodiesel for what I think are valid reasons: first, reducing our dependence on OPEC, and second, because petroleum is non-renewable and eventually will run out. Second, I think there’s something really empowering about being able to grow your own fuel in your back yard rather than having to transport it from some far away place like Texas or Alaska. So, I don’t oppose the use of bio-fuel. I do think it’s absurd that their state refused to let the buses refuel with petro-diesel (diesel engines can use either fuel). And I’m glad to learn about the high freezing temperature of diesel, that’s something I didn’t know about.

Regular diesel will work, with the proper additives, down to as low as -40 F. Bio-diesel will ‘lard’ up at temperatures below -10 F. Bio-diesel also separates and makes a mess of the fuel system once it freezes solid.

I’ve had first hand experience with government “experts”. Not only was I not impressed, but I was actually surprised to find out how stubborn an (idiotic) engineer, that is used to having subordinates bow to his will/mandates, can be in seeing their errors. I had a good 1.5 hour long shouting match with one letting him know that he didn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground before he finally submitted and came back with, “Well, I never thought there was a problem in the first place, we just needed someone to play devil’s advocate on the matter”. Suffice it to say, if a government bureaucrat thinks the solution is (A), then I’m certain that its not.
Down here in Florida, I have a friend that uses Bio-diesel. He was using it because when gas got up over $4/gal, he could get biodiesel cheaper. However, there is almost no chance that temps will get down to -10F here…

KW64 on January 19, 2009 at 5:13 PM
Germans and Russians both used diesel. There were other problems too. Extreme cold causes grease in transmissions to become so thick that it stiffens the tranny into uselessness. Ethylene glycol and alcohol have their limits. The Germans may have been forced to stretch the anti-freeze and not have the extra low temperature protection. The Germans may also have run out of the additives that keep diesel flowing at low temps.
The school system and the State are arguing over the problem. The state says the school system allowed water into the fuel.

I have always lived below the Mason/Dixon line. We had a GM diesel in the 1980’s. If you did not use special diesel or use a additive, the car would get about 5 miles from home and die. This happen to us in Maryland and North Carolina. Just because you live in a area that does not usually get cold, does not mean it will not. I was raised in Atlanta, GA. One day it got so cold, the natural gas line coming into our house froze.

Lots of Arctic diesel used to be shipped to Canada via ship from Texaco, Port Arthur, TX. All they did was load a ratio, which I forget, of naphtha and diesel which the ship would just pump from tank to tank to blend it on the voyage around the east coast and up the St. Lawrence.
