Quotes of the day

Obama amnesia is a fairly common condition. A quick poll of colleagues reveals that the only saying of the new president that has incontestably lodged in our collective brain is: “Yes we can.” A few others mentioned: “Change we can believe in.” There was broad agreement that Mr Obama had made an excellent and profound speech on race in America, although nobody could remember the precise details.

On Tuesday, when he makes his inaugural address in Washington, Mr Obama will doubtless once again blow his audience away. He will also have the chance finally to give a speech whose phrases will resonate through history. But, perhaps, he would be wise once again to pass up the opportunity.

For with Barack Obama, the man is the message.

*
“What the phenomenon that we’ve seen with Obama is the ‘Obama the politician,’ ‘Obama the political candidate’ sales are over but it’s been replaced with ‘Obama the pop culture icon,’” she said, pointing out that since the election, the number of Obama products for sale has continued to grow.

“It’s almost like what you’ve seen with Che Guevara or Eva Peron, when a political leader has this coolness factor that goes well beyond their political beliefs. They represent something even bigger.”

Obama amnesia is a fairly common condition.

That seems to strike every time you ask an Obama supporter about his accomplishments.

I remember one other saying of Obama’s, when he was speaking in support of President Bush. It was “Don’t be bamboozled. Don’t buy into it.”

If Obama thinks that it’s good enough for the president, then I think it’s good enough for Him.

Here’s a quote for ya!

Wife Says Biden Had Choice of Jobs

By NEDRA PICKLER, AP

(Jan. 19) – Joe Biden’s wife said Monday that he had his pick of being Barack Obama’s running mate or the secretary of state nomination that eventually went to Hillary Rodham Clinton, a slip that the vice president-elect immediately tried to shush.

Jill Biden’s comment came during an appearance with her husband on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” taped at Washington’s Kennedy Center on the eve of the inauguration.

“Joe had the choice to be secretary of state or vice president,” she said. Her husband turned to his wife with his finger to his lips and a “Shhhh!” that sent the audience into laughter. “OK, he did,” Jill Biden said in her defense.

Tommy_G on January 19, 2009 at 10:40 PM

Yes, I’ve a feeling the Bush administration won’t welcome the Obamas by prying all the “O”s off the White House keyboards. Whether we’ll have any kind of dignity under Obama remains to be seen–but we know it’s not to be expected from his compatriots in leadership over at the House and Senate.

…the number of Obama products for sale….

No kidding, I was in New Orleans the other day, and in addition to the Obama t-shirts, the Obama buttons, the Obama kitchen magnets and placemats, I saw a vendor of knock-off fragrances selling Obama Hope and Change. I wish I was making that up.

azlibertarian on January 19, 2009 at 10:48 PM

There is nothing wrong with your coming life. Do not attempt to adjust your income. I will control your income. If I wish to make you richer, I will lift up your income. If I wish to make you poorer, I will crush you with taxes. Do not attempt to live your own life. I will control your life. If I wish I can reduce your life to a living Hell, or sharpen it to Heavenly wonderfulness. I will control your ups. I will control your downs. For the next four eight twelve sixteen twenty twenty four twenty eight thirty two thirty six years, sit quietly and obediently and I will control all that you see, hear and feel. I remember a precise detail. He said he could no sooner disown Rev. Wright than he could disown the black community.

He later disowned Rev. Wright. That’s the reason that they “claim” nobody remembers anything about that speech. Because it was all baloney and nobody in the media would ever want to make it seem like Obama is dishonest.

Heh. I am torn between spending the next three years simply rolling with the punches and refusing to discuss politics of any kind for any reason, or –

Arming myself with a short list of the positions Obama took in the primary, and then flip-flopped on in the general, and the positions Obama has spewed as a candidate and then flip-flopped on a President; and asking every liberal who torments me to name their favorite Obama quote and their favorite Obama position.

On Tuesday, when he gives his inaugural address, Mr Obama will be able to stick to the beautifully delivered generalities that have inspired so many people in the US and around the world.

Most people are so much dumber than I had assumed.

this coolness factor

What invariably happens with people who are so cool (not to be confused with calm and deliberate under fire) is that when they don’t acutally get a crisis scenario to go their way, they are absolutely, utterly and completely, lost.

They are so used to their coolness getting them off the hook that if that doesn’t work there’s no understanding of logistics for backup or maybe that’s what should have been employed to fix a crisis begin with.

You can’t everything with, tude.

Speakup on January 20, 2009 at 1:41 AM

Sure, Lenin II

I was thinking Hitler II. Same basic thing, I guess. One man shreiking nonsense, and a crowd of mindless millions throwing their hands up in the air yelling “heil”.

Scary how history repeats itself. But, that’s what you get when people aren’t taught history.

ErinF on January 20, 2009 at 1:42 AM

“They represent something even bigger.”

Or smaller.

JM Hanes on January 20, 2009 at 3:42 AM

I find it worth noting that Barack Obama’s propensity for delivering a speech that is stirring but unable to be quoted afterwards is shared by a great patriot, one Patrick Henry. Thomas Jefferson noted that while he can recall being profoundly moved by Patrick Henry’s speeches, he could not remember a line of them.
It may be the reason that so much of his “Give me Liberty or give me Death” speech that we have learned in our history textbooks was put onto paper by an eyewitness to the speech, but so much of it was substituted with Greek philosophical writings that one can legitimately question what exactly Henry actually said. Still, Henry is remembered as a great and profound Patriot.

The capacity to deliver one-liners that can be quoted around the water cooler like last night’s episode of Family Guy does not equate a great speaker. I myself can’t remember Obama’s speeches because I’m too distracted by the numerous verbal pauses. Drives me bonkers.

Spc Steve on January 20, 2009 at 3:51 AM

The capacity to deliver one-liners that can be quoted around the water cooler like last night’s episode of Family Guy does not equate a great speaker.

Spc Steve on January 20, 2009 at 3:51 AM

That’s very true, but the problem with BHO’s speeches is that there is generally no coherent set of ideas underlying them. It’s not a question of what he said exactly in his “greatest speech since Lincoln” about race, but that no one can remember any of the ideas (other than usual platitudes). He didn’t say anything, let alone anything memorable, which is why no one has even bothered discussing it since it was given. Great speeches have people going over them, enjoying them over and over. I don’t think anyone bothers to listen to BHO speeches a second time, since they are all deflated at that point. BHO speeches seem to be something that people only enjoy in the moment (and only weird people with very low standards, at that, as the rhetoric is usually pretty lame).

With BHO, things can only make sense if you don’t hold him to what he said yesterday.

progressoverpeace on January 20, 2009 at 4:08 AM

There was broad agreement that Mr Obama had made an excellent and profound speech on race in America, although nobody could remember the precise details.

Excellent and profound? I watched that speech live, because I was curious to hear what Obama had to say after all the hype about his fabulous speaking abilities. The speech was mundane, at best. The gist of it was that black people have their grievances against whites, and whites have their grievances against blacks, and we should all try harder to understand each other and get along. Rodney King expressed the same “profound” sentiment several years ago, and he did it much more memorably and succinctly than Obama did.

The only truly memorable part of Obama’s speech was his attempt to justify his long-term relationship with his racist, hate-mongering, anti-American, conspiracy-promoting pastor Jeremiah Wright. Obama fervently assured us that he could no more disown Rev. Wright than he could disown his own white granny, who had raised him and sacrificed for him and loved him more than anyone else in the world. (To show his appreciation for his beloved granny, Obama also accused her of being a racist). Two weeks after the speech, when Wright went on television and accused Obama of being an opportunistic politician who’d say anything to get elected, Obama gave another speech in which he disowned Wright (”he’s not the Jeremiah Wright I thought I knew”) and quit his church.

Obama has Obama-amnesia too!

I’m depressed. I have to go face five classroom full of 11 year olds who will think that BO’s a good thing for the country. *sigh*

The thing I’m going to miss most about Bush is when he was president we were still a free republic.
As of noon today that will no longer be true.

Is Patrick Henry’s Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death speech still taught in schools today? We had to memorize it in fourth grade. My guess is kids from today’s schools have no idea who Patrick Henry was or what he did.

Oh hell, what are you folk all moaning about. I for one welcome the new administration of our Overlord. I’m excited because after today, I don’t have to work anymore. The magical negro is going to pay for my mortgage and my gas……..Peggy even said so.

On a more curious note. Is it true that the Mother in Law will be living in the White House with them? Has this ever been done before? Sounds to me like a little government housing taken to the extreme no?

Obama’s Victory — A British view An editorial from the London Daily Mail

A victory for the hysterical Oprah Winfrey, the mad racist preacher Jeremiah Wright, the mainstream media who abandoned any sense of objectivity long ago, Europeans who despise America largely because they depend on her, comics who claim to be dangerous and fearless but would not dare attack genuinely powerful special interest groups. A victory for Obama-worshippers everywhere. A victory for the cult of the cult. A man who has done little with his life but has written about his achievements as if he had found the cure for cancer in between winning a marathon and building a nuclear reactor with his teeth. Victory for style over substance, hyperbole over history, rabble-raising over reality.

A victory for Hollywood , the most dysfunctional community in the world. Victory for Streisand, Spielberg, Soros and Sarandon. Victory for those who prefer welfare to will and interference to independence. For those who settle for group think and herd mentality rather than those who fight for individual initiative and the right to be out of step with meager political fashion.

Victory for a man who is no friend of freedom. He and his people have already stated that media has to be controlled so as to be balanced, without realizing the extraordinary irony within that statement. Like most liberal zealots, the Obama worshippers constantly speak of Fox and Limbaugh, when the vast bulk of television stations and newspapers are drastically liberal and anti-conservative. Senior Democrat Chuck Schumer said that just as pornography should be censored, so should talk radio. In other words, one of the few free and open means of popular expression may well be cornered and beaten by bullies who even in triumph cannot tolerate any criticism and opposition. A victory for those who believe the state is better qualified to raise children than the family, for those who prefer teachers’ unions to teaching and for those who are naively convinced that if the West is sufficiently weak towards its enemies, war and terror will dissolve as quickly as the tears on the face of a leftist celebrity. A victory for social democracy even after most of Europe has come to the painful conclusion that social democracy leads to mediocrity, failure, unemployment, inflation, higher taxes and economic stagnation. A victory for intrusive lawyers, banal sentimentalists, social extremists and urban snobs.

Congratulations America !
