Gay bishop’s prayer omitted from HBO coverage of Obama concert

Turns out he was slated for the “pre-show,” not the show, so he went on before HBO went on the air. An innocent miscommunication, could have happened to anyone. Ahem:

“We had always intended and planned for Rt. Rev. Robinson’s invocation to be included in the televised portion of yesterday’s program. We regret the error in executing this plan – but are gratified that hundreds of thousands of people who gathered on the mall heard his eloquent prayer for our nation that was a fitting start to our event,” emails PIC communications director Josh Earnest.

Except … not everyone on the mall heard it, either. Follow the first link up top and you’ll see that the speakers cut out near the Lincoln Memorial just as he was starting his prayer and only picked up again as he was finishing. I wonder how the comments will run on that: Deliberate sabotage by Team Barry, or divine intervention?

A reporter from Christianity Today picked up the video. As promised, there’s nary a mention of Jesus to be found — but he did, stunningly, warn the faithful assembled that “our new president is a human being, not a messiah.” Say this for the guy — he’s never been afraid to buck religious convention. “As promised, there’s nary a mention of Jesus to be found”

Are you talking about the speech, or historical records?

LevStrauss on January 19, 2009 at 4:03 PM

Well, if God has “many understandings”, perhaps he understands that some will not worship the new President, the heretics.

Damian G. on January 19, 2009 at 4:03 PM

“our new president is a human being, not a messiah.”

Heresy.

That he had to say it at all is an indication of how effed we are.

Yea like they will really believe that.

No thanks. I’ve seen, and heard, enough from this loser already.

I believe Exodus 33:20 will answer your question.

LevStrauss on January 19, 2009 at 4:10 PM

“our new president is a human being, not a messiah.”

Of course. The Messiah can only save your soul.

Obama can save your soul, your house, your gas bill, your state government, and do all that while assuaging your white guilt.

He’s not just the Messiah, he’s Barack the Magical Messiah.

Hmmm….Well, that’s interesting…

I kinda picture that scene from Forrest Gump, when Gump gets up to speak at the Lincoln Memorial during the anti-war gathering…and the military dude is pulling the speaker wires out and they’re frantically trying to get it plugged back in…just when Gump is finished…

While I object to his refusal to serve Christ as a “Christian minister,” there were parts of the prayer that weren’t bad at all. And in spite of the speaker malfunction mentioned in the post, obviously (from the clip), a great many people in the Mall heard it word for word.

I kinda picture the sodomist bishop at a bathhouse spreading diseases, and picking up new ones.

I’m really beginning to feel that we’re being time-warped back to post-war Soviet Russia.

Isn’t it funny how what he says is supposed to be more important simply because he’s gay? As if that makes him so much more wise than every straight bishop out there.

I understand that the Obama cabal told HBO not to air him live.

I wonder how the gay community, who put so much hope in The One, will cover this one up.

stefystef on January 19, 2009 at 4:32 PM

The sound system was homophobic.

MDWNJ on January 19, 2009 at 4:35 PM

Say this for the guy — he’s never been afraid to buck religious convention.

…”gay bishop”…this phrase belongs in Carlin’s Dictionary of Mutually Exclusive Terms along with “jumbo shrimp”, “military intelligence”, “honest lawyer” and “diet ice cream”….

…I’ll say this for the guy: he’s a perverted and self-worshipping sinner whose continued career is shredding his church, leading many of his parishioners into apostacy….

…now, speaking as a sinner myself, I can admire his brass…but, not taking any pride in my own sin, I can’t conceive of why he takes so much pride in his own….

…the Episcopal Church was once the beloved church of Robert E. Lee…today’s church makes me weep….

How very homophobic of HBO to censor such an upstanding example of everything libs want us to be.

mr.blacksheep on January 19, 2009 at 4:42 PM

Considering how HBO rolls I really doubt they censored the gay bishop of their own free will.

>> Help him remember his own oppression as a minority, drawing on that experience of discrimination…

Obama oppressed … discriminated against..? Let see he grew up raised by his “white” grand parents … went to the best collages (how did he pay for that..?) Became a “community organizer” got elected into the Senate and ushered right into the presidency without too much trouble.

Where can I get in on this type of discrimination…?

Donut on January 19, 2009 at 4:56 PM

One has to love how Obama’s crew milked every penny they could out of this — by selling the show in segments. The “pre-show” was sold separately from the “show” — and possibly the “show” was sold in segments too [a segment being the distance between commercial breaks?].

It’s unclear from the article. Did HBO buy the “pre-show” and flub it? Or did they not buy it at all, and therefore neither record nor broadcast it?

Prayer for the women who are raped and abused, well thanks to President Bush a lot less woman are raped and abused…a lot less. Try several countries and working on more.
I HOP that Obama doesn’t CHANGE President Bush’s desire to see all woman release from the religious and cultural tyranny that the liberals want so much to continue.

Excellent point, Jimmy. If Obama was so oppressed by the history of Christian inaugural speeches by straight, white, male Christians, all he had to do was invite an Asian lesbian atheist to “pray”, or whatever it is atheists do.

Why the “gay Bishop” schtick, unless he was throwing his bone to the homosexual community?

Well, he’s ALSO a heretic, a liar, a deceiver and an alcoholic. Quite the package, really!

Has someone told HBO that Tom Hanks say’s it’s un-American not to support gays on absolutely everything? Didn’t Tom Hanks do a couple of mini series in conjunction with HBO? Does that mean Tom Hanks is an un-American gay oppressor too?

I’m guessing the Obama people felt pressure from everyday Americans who were offended by this man’s controversial “prayer,” so they moved him to the pre-show. Gene Robinson was not praying to the God of the Bible no matter what he says. He’s shaped a god to suite his homosexual sin. “My prayer” is that he repents of his sin and trust in the Lord Jesus before he no longer has the opportunity. Amen amen amen.

apacalyps on January 19, 2009 at 7:47 PM

This is promising. This lets me know that HBO thinks that this is a center right country and a gay pastor could embarass the One and endanger his “centrism.” So they help him out and keep the Jesus-less prayer under wraps. The discouragin part is that we have 4 years of the media ina lll it’s forms riding shotgun with Obama. Ugh!

Theworldisnotenough on January 19, 2009 at 8:54 PM

Let that disgrace to the clerical collar fade into obscurity.
John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

“Oh God of our many understandings…..Bless us with compassion and generosity, remembering that every religion’s God judges us by how we care for the most vulnerable.”

Ok, I don’t know anything about religion but I would like to ask a question of those who do. In the Christian faith is it acceptable to acknowledge the existence of other “Gods” while praying to “God”? I thought all Christian faiths share a belief in only one God and that no others exist. When he says “every religion’s God judges us” does he mean one God judges all religions or is he saying each religion has its own God? If this guy is a bishop doesn’t that mean he is Catholic? I am an agnostic who has never studied any religion so I was just asking.

Dollayo on January 19, 2009 at 10:48 PM

The whole gay bishop thing and the kerfuffle over the merciful non-broadcast of his “prayer’ is beyond parody. All I can say is the omission of this portion of the event merely makes it unnecessary for me to avoid it. Thank HBO, BHO or whomever.

Mason on January 19, 2009 at 11:16 PM

Dollayo on January 19, 2009 at 10:48 PM

Answer to your first question: unequivocal NO.

“You shall have no other gods before me”

“Love the Lord with all your heart, with all your soul, and all your mind”

“I am the way, the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father but through me”

“Search the scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life. And those [are the scriptures] that speak of Me”

The Bible is quite explicit that there is only one God, the God revealed in the scriptures. Worshiping any other “god” is blasphemous and no one who does so will have eternal life.

AZfederalist on January 19, 2009 at 11:34 PM

You have to remember AllahP, that this is all about Gene! Far be it from Obama to take even a ray of sunlight from the centre of the universe that is Vicky Gene Robinson. Yes O is not the Messiah, because Gene I-just-want-to-be-a-country-bishop is.

The answer to your question, Dollayo, is No. Our God says He is a jealous God, we are to have no others before Him. He told the prophet Isaiah there are no other gods besides Him, and He challenged the other gods to make themselves known and they did not. We are not to acknowledge or pray to any other gods at any time.
Robinson is engaging in heresy. But let’s not burn him at the stake. We are obliged to pray for him to recognize he is a sinner and turn to the One True God, not some god of his many understandings.
