No wonder he wants out. Had it not been for George who sent the SAC of the detail to check on him, they would have found him floating down the Tigris. Iraqi security had already beat him to a pulp and were ready to dump him in the river when the SAC arrived. They told the SAC “We’ll take care of him.” The SAC had to intervine to save the guy’s life. They take public embarassment seriously over there. Evidently he is still in bad enough shape that we have not seen any pictures of him since the incident.

I personally think they should give him a minimal sentence, maybe just a hefty fine, and then let him go. A light sentence would be ultimate vindication that Bush has been right about Iraq, that freedom has taken root there.

Hitch is right on this. I disagreed with these methods, but they did come from demand from below. And the idea of prosecuting the Bush Administrtion for it is wrong becuase if it did come from below, a change in attitude would be really over the economy tanking not the use of these techniques.

How would asylum work in these circumstances?

Is he out on bail and planning on fleeing to Switzerland?

In that case, wouldn’t Switzerland be subverting the legally enacted laws of another country? Are they planning on taking a stance against the law itself, or would they just be sheltering a criminal?

Or, was the article saying that, if Zaidi does not end up in jail, he will need asylum?
