Breaking: Bush commutes sentences of Ramos and Compean; Update: Will be released on March 20

posted at 12:59 pm on January 19, 2009 by Allahpundit

Just across the AP wire, a gift to the base on his way out the door. Stand by for updates.

Update: Politico put the odds of it happening at 3-1. The major pardons still to come: Libby and CIA interrogators.

Update: WND noted last week that they were under consideration. The difference between a pardon and a commutation:

Rodgers said the former agents apparently are not eligible for a pardon, which would nullify the punishment. But they might be eligible for a commutation, which would result in a reduction of their sentences.

“It could be very possible that the pardon attorney may recommend to President Bush that Ramos and Compean’s sentences might be limited to the time they have already served,” Eichler said.

They’ve been in prison since January 2007.

Update: You can thank the Texas congressional delegation for this, probably. All 34 members signed a letter to Bush last week requesting the commutation.

Update: Even the U.S. Attorney who convicted them thought the punishment didn’t fit the crime.

Mr. Sutton has stood by the convictions but questioned the sentences.

“The only legitimate question, I think a legitimate question, is: ‘Is the punishment too harsh?’ I have always said the punishment in this case was harsh,” Mr. Sutton said on Nov. 14.

Update: Here’s the White House statement. They’re guilty as charged; it’s a simple question of the sentence having been too draconian. Hence the commutation instead of a pardon.

Bush didn’t pardon the men for their crimes, but decided instead to commute their prison sentences because he believed they were excessive and that they had already suffered the loss of their jobs, freedom and reputations, a senior administration official said.

The action by the president, who believes the border agents received fair trials and that the verdicts were just, does not diminish the seriousness of their crimes, the official said.

Update: Fox News says their sentences will expire now on March 20; they’d been facing terms of more than 10 years each. I’m looking for an explanation for the two-month delay.

Apparently you like Sharia law since you don’t care if it comes to the USA or not NOneya, and where are these Christian talibaners located? Ive asked you where they are stationed at and you havn’t given me the location.

Crystal Cathedral, Saddleback, Lakewood, Liberty U, at a megachurch near you!

Your party doesn’t seem to know how to deal with the true taliban and remember they won’t negotiate without total victory on their part. You not knowing what Kerry’s plan is tells me that you still have no plan to stop the advance of Sharia law.

huh? are you really scared that al qaeda will turn us into a caliphate? really? the most powerful nation in the world is gonna fall to a few thousand fanatics? boy you fright easily. if we can beat the nazis and soviets we can beat al qaeda, and we are, through prevention and smart intelligence we have them on the run. terrorists will never be wiped out entirely, like kerry said we can just hope they will become an irrelevant nuisance.

Yes the illegals have a soul because Jesus said so unless you want to call him liar as well.

Power is nothing if you aren’t prepared to use it, and with a few lily-livered cowards around spouting the “Kumbaya” song without thought.. you bet we just like the Japanese and Germans could go right down.

You do remember their might and power, right? And you did get taught about the Roman empire.. right? See them around lately? No? Well, it was folks just like you that brought it down from the inside.

You bet we could go down. America is no longer all that good. I am not sure how much good will have to go before you get to find that all oout.

I’m surprised you are allowed to post here. Can’t remember seeing any Republican Party enthusiasts at Kos or Democrat Underground. It is a typical example of conservative politeness even in the face of liberal anger, I suppose.

But conservatives did underestimate how much love the Hispanic community would show towards a “black” candidate. But I doubt the Democrats are going to keep nominating guys with Obama’s skin color. In 8 years, they will be offering up another pasty white limosuine liberal like John Kerry or Al Gore who will not be getting 2/3 of the Hispanic vote.

Noneya you just listed a bunch of churches and tell me how does that compare to the Taliban? I understand your blindness when you call Jesus a fraud, boy you are plowing into eternity like a bull in a china closet. Are you that sure you are correct? Those churches you mentioned,, have they bombed anywhere here in the USA demanding that girls be banned from school? Yes, with your attitude Al Queda could bring down the USA because you stand for nothing. Can you tell me specifically what is so “evil” about those churches you mentioned? I doubt if we could beat the Soviets or the Nazis with so many of us with your attitude not seeing any evil in those systems. They would wear us down by degree and before we know it the constitution is out and Sharia law is in.

Folks, can we please stay on the topic of the two lying morons who President Bush threw a life-preserver to?

CapitalistPig on January 19, 2009 at 8:32 PM

Hey Cap Pig, how many of the past people who were pardoned after previous presidents were not guilty of lying? People get off subject because some refuse to answer basic questions.

garydt on January 19, 2009 at 8:35 PM

I don’t know. All I know is that Compean and Ramos lied and that’s why they find themselves sitting in prison today.

CapitalistPig on January 19, 2009 at 8:36 PM

What about Scooter Libby? A full pardon should have been issued by now.

Phil Byler on January 19, 2009 at 8:39 PM

I don’t know either and many of these had lied before and for some reason are not sitting in prison today. To some lying is a moral relativity and there are no such thing as right or wrong doing or sin.

garydt on January 19, 2009 at 8:46 PM

Crystal Cathedral

Yeah, I have seen those congregates firing missiles at the synagogue just down the street…

I’m still trying to unravel Noneya’s tortured syntax. Could he be a furriner??? He wastes my time with his rants…

This is one of the more uninformed statemets I have read on this site. jihad is incumbent upon every muslim. There are 3 billion muslims worldwide. Nearly 30% of the muslim population in Great Britain beleives that the train bombings were justified. we are talking about more than just a few thousand, perhaps many hundreds of thousands or even millions. It is naive to think that Jihadists begin and end with Al Qaeda.

the rantings of some wingnut congressman are your “source”? you gotta be freaking kidding me….

Noneya on January 19, 2009 at 4:08 PM

Yet another restatement of the following leftist syllogism, popular among those who presume to dictate a priori who must be telling the truth and who must be lying, based merely on their identity:

Person P claims X
Person P is a Republican/conservative
Ergo NOT-X

Johan Klaus on January 19, 2009 at 10:47 PM

They get a break on their sentence as a bone thrown to rabid anti-immigration Conservatives.

Mark Jaquith on January 19, 2009 at 6:13 PM

Anti-illegal aliens.

Illegal

being the key word. As in

illegally

entering the country, either paying no taxes or falsifying government documents, identity theft, hit and run, DWI, swamping our emergency rooms, drug dealing and driving like they do in Mexico. Those are just a few of the problems that we are having in Texas, so that lettuce will not be twenty five dollars a head.

Johan Klaus on January 19, 2009 at 10:59 PM

Johan Klaus on January 19, 2009

John, don’t expect them to acknowledge that we are anti-illegal and pro-legal immigration. That would knock them off their higher moral perch and then they’d be left with just the merits of their argument. Since there is no merit to it, they must slander us as “anti-immigration”. The term “illegal” is conveniently ignored.

Bush and Sutton are buddies – I suspect that was why there was no pardon. I also fully suspect and this is just my opinion, that Sutton had input on this action. I’m still surprised Bush went this far.

abcurtis on January 20, 2009 at 8:07 AM

Reading some of the comments here, Noneya’s especially, how did we get from Ramos and Campeon to the taliban and a US caliphate?
I guess I should have gotten here earlier. I’m with the rest of you folks – if Noneya ever said something sensible then better check Hades for frost.

abcurtis on January 20, 2009 at 8:12 AM

You might want to look at http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/txw/press_releases/Compean-Ramos/Compean_Ramos_factsheet1.pdf.

They shot 15 times at an unarmed man who was running away from them after he tried to surrender to them during the middle of the day. They were nowhere near their houses.

They bungled the marijuana arrest because they left the scene rather than apprehending the guy they shot at, which meant he was able to get back to Mexico without having any physical evidence tying him to the crime.

They did not report to superiors that they fired their guns (one of them was a instructor who told other agents this requirement and both of them had training on this requirement the prior day) and then subsequently lied about it.

They received an additional mandatory ten year sentence because of a mandatory sentencing law passed by Congress at the urging of the White House. (They were not charged with attempted murder, which would have meant an even longer term).

They were found guilty by a US jury’s unanimous verdict.

didn’t i just say that i supported mccain/kennedy? it’s not amnesty, in fact, it’s tougher than anything your messiah reagan ever did. i contributed that but it doesn’t change the fact that your party is RACIST. you want more proof? check out that Oscar grant thread the other day or any other post regarding race.

Noneya on January 19, 2009 at 5:08 PM

So why exactly are you posting on a racist hate filled site like Hot air ?
What is it you hope to accomplish?
What exactly is your background ?
Why such hatred for people who do not hold your politcal views.
I thought Obama said we would all get along and now I read this thread and I I I am heartbroke

Yeah, maybe the signed letter from all 34 Congressmen had some effect after all. IMHO that was as much a message for ol’ Johnny – who now needs to be looking over his shoulder from now on (“you’d better not be a dirty public servant, or else…”) – as it was for W.
