ABC notices the inaugural price tag

Holding a splashy inaugural during economic difficulties got George Bush some bad press in 2001, and again in 2005 while we fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. The amounts spent on those two inaugurals pale in comparison to the estimated $170 million price tag of Barack Obama’s inauguration, and the media has finally begun to notice the price — and the people paying it. ABC News reports that the Hope and Change Express will get funded by beneficiaries of the government bailout pushed by Obama and the Democrats:
The biggest group of donors were none other than the recently bailed-out Wall Street executives and employees.
“The finance sector is well represented, despite its recent troubles,” Ritsch said. “Those who worked in finance still managed to pull together nearly $7 million for the inauguration.”
The donors will get some of the best seats in the house for the inauguration, as well as admittance to some of the best balls and other events.
“I don’t think that they’re going to get a whole lot of face time with the new president himself,” Ritsch said, “but they are certainly establishing themselves from day one as his biggest financial supporters. And if there’s something they need or to tell him down the road, they will have an easier time doing that than everyone else.”
Not that they’re paying the entire bill. Forty-nine million dollars will come straight out of the federal budget, and Virginia and Maryland expect a further $75 million in subsidies for help in covering security and logistics cost. We’ll all be paying for this celebration of democracy.
But what will all of these Wall Street bailout recipients get for their money, which until the last couple of months used to be ours? If not direct access, then certainly some VIP treatment:
President-elect Barack Obama billed his inauguration an event “for all Americans.” But in the nation’s capital this long weekend, wealthy visitors are finding themselves a bit more equal — and warmer — than others.
Most Americans here to see President-elect Obama make history crammed onto buses and trains, slept on floors and fought crowds and cold. But the wealthiest Americans coming to see the event are enjoying all the perks their money and power ever warranted.
For CEOs and stars arriving by private jet, local airports have shut down entire runways to serve as parking lots for their planes. Officials are prepared to handle hundreds of private aircraft for the long weekend.
What a shock — liberal supporters using private jets! Forget the carbon footprint; the actual footprint of all that aircraft will apparently block runways for a significant period this week. It’s an interesting manner in which to celebrate the election of someone who insists that we have to cut back on energy usage. And all that “unity”? Some people, Obamaniacs are discovering, are more equal than others:
Visitors who hadn’t raised hundreds of thousands of dollars couldn’t get closer to the performance. “Excuse me! You got tickets? If you don’t have tickets, you have to go to ‘General Population,’” shouted a guard at an entrance near the memorial, gesturing with her arms to turn around and head back away from the show.
The concert was supposed to be part of “the people’s party,” said Shawn Paterniti, who had come with his wife Mia from Columbia, Md., to see the show. “But still, you have the VIPs who want their front-row seats. So I guess they get their tickets no one knows about,” he said, as he and his wife headed to join the “general population,” far away from the performances.
“It seems odd to have a VIP section for a concert about unity,” quipped the local blog DCist.com. The blogger, Kriston Capps, suggested a new name for the event: “We Are One, but Some Are More One Than Others.”
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss … if you can pony up enough cash to get close enough to meet him, that is.

Hold a pre-paid for retreat after a bailout for a million dollars, be crucified in the press and by the people and have congressional investigations with possible criminal penalties.
Give tens of millions of dollars after a bailout to hold a public political party… priceless.
I’m still waiting for the leftists to complain that the exclusiveity rights for a PUBLIC party for a PUBLIC function paid with funds by bailed out organizations were sold to HBO for private income.

The Obamabots on the ABC thread are very amusing… Apparently, the inauguration is part of the stimulus package rather than what it really is.. a massive opportunity for self-congratulations by the man with the world’s largest ego. I’m really rooting for this guy to fail massively; it’ll be good for the country (and Obama himself) if he’s cut down a few sizes. As for the Obamabots, they are quite annoying. Is there anyway we could convince them to drink the Koolaid, already??

Where’s Kennedy in this complaining about the money that could be used to purchase heating oil? Or do we only take that from beneveolent socialists of other countries?

Tommy_G on January 19, 2009 at 12:54 PM
Why do they have big parties at all?
My first day on the job isn’t about easing in and job nobbing. It’s about jumping onto the work and proving they hired the right person.
It should be a simple swearing in with footage given to all that want it, and then get down to business.
The celebration should happen (and did) right after an election win.
They all do it though, which is fine, as long as they don’t complain when Reps do it and look the other way for Dems.

This is all so very funny. We are right in the midst of it all,, so it seems so much bigger than it is.
The party will go on,,, just as it did for the Clinton’s. Change was Bill Clinton’s big word as well. I can remember TV commercials, some auto maker, the week of the inauguration have a commercial with the word “Change.”
Just let the libs have their party.
6 months from now,, 9 months at the most,, the bloom will be off the rose. Reality is not going to bow to speeches of Hope and Change. Obama, at some point, will have to govern. At some point,, regardless of what his propaganda machine says,, the public will look at him and hold him responsible. We all love to be caught up with the fad,, we love to be in on history in the making and so forth,,, but when reality hits,, inflation rises, jobs are still being lost, new regulations effect peoples lives, Obama’s arrogance starts showing through, Truth Squads start intimidating too many people, Utopia still hasn’t materialized,,, today’s celebrity is tomorrows has been. I know it’s hard to visualize for some people while we are in the very midst of the “biggest historical event since the beginning of time,” but,,, how many more party’s can they have??? How many more events??? How many more times can Obama just deal with the world by taking off his shirt and body surfing??

Not sure; is the $170m vs. $43m for Bush an apples/apples comparison? Was there additional ’security’ spending above the $43m for Bush? I’m sure if it was it pales in comparison as well, but the $43m seems to compare to a $45m-ish number for that specific spending (before all the extra spending)? Can’t tell from the reporting.

AAARRRGGGHHH!!! I need a moment to vent. I work in an art gallery in the center of Georgetown (Washington, DC). To say that the atmosphere here is festive would be an understatement. DC is full of all manner of people on the left side of the political spectrum.
I was just interviewed by a Brazilian news crew about one of our artists, Andy Thomas. We have three pieces by him in our window; one is of the former Democrat presidents playing poker, another is of the former Republican presidents, and the third is of Obama giving a speech. The gentleman did not care at all about the Republican piece, and he asked the most one-sided questions. “Is Obama bringing a resurgence of the arts?” “Is this a new type of art?” “I’m sure that you did not sell much under Bush, so Obama must be so refreshing.” When I tried to answer with anything other than Obama worship, he simply ignored me and re-phrased with what he wanted to hear.
Right after that a giddy aged hippy came in and wanted to tell me all about how he worked for the Obama campaign and would do anything…ANYTHING…it took to replace the criminal in the White House with a man who would save the U.S. I think that I threw up a little bit in my mouth.
I cannot wait for the communal orgasm to end.
DCGamer on January 19, 2009 at 1:51 PM
The media hoping to salvage at least some credibility notices the expense of the inaugration, after Newsbusters notices them not noticing the price tag.
They’ll need that crdibility to paint Barack as the answer to all our woes. When his programs do not work he’ll be liopnized as a success anyway. The only reason he is not more successful is that awful George Bush.
Theworldisnotenough on January 19, 2009 at 1:52 PM
I hear that Bush spent @ $50-60MIL on 2005. That definitely pales in comparison to obama’s $170MIL. That is deinitely more $CHANGE$! And the hope comes in that you will have enough to feed your family. Hmmm. A candidate that Hollywood likes, elected by a Hollywood-like media, and spends money like someone in Hollywood. The only difference is that IT IS YOUR MONEY THAT HE’S SPENDING!!!!! I wonder how many jobs could have been created by that $170MIL??!??!!

Latest update from “Obama Central” (Georgetown, Washington, DC)…
Throngs of young people walking down the street shouting “Obama!” Part of me wants to be happy for them. It is nice to see young people enthusiastic about something, but can you imagine how hurt they will be when they realize this is all hype and false hope? Even if Obama were to do an OK job, there is no way he can live up to the Left’s hopes. What will happen when the hopes of these people are crushed upon the rocks of reality?
Another Obama fanatic just gave me a CD of music (illegally) copied from famous musicians. On one side is the quote, “Rosa sat, so Martin could walk. Martin walked, so Obama could run. Obama is running so our children can fly.” (Just typing that hurts my fingers. Blech!)
On the other side is this quote (it is long, but well worth reading if you can avoid losing your lunch. It illustrates the fantasy world in which many of these people live):
“It was a creed written into the founding documents that declared the destiny of a nation. Yes we can. It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists as they blazed a trail toward freedom. Yes we can. It was sung by immigrants as they struck out from distant shores and pioneers who pushed westward against an unforgiving wilderness. Yes we can. It was the call of workers who organized; women who reached for the ballots; a President who chose the moon as our new frontier; and a King who took us to the mountaintop and pointed our way to the Promised Land. Yes we can to justice and equality. Yes we can to opportunity and prosperity. Yes we can heal this nation. Yes we can repair the world. Yes we can. We know the battle ahead will be long, but always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change. We want change. We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics…they will only grow louder and more dissonant…We’ve been asked to pause for a reality check. We’ve been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope. But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope. Now the hopes of the little girl who goes to a crumbling school in Dillon are the same as the dreams of the boy who learns on the streets of LA; we will remember that there is something happening in America, that we are not as divided as our politics suggests; that we are one people; we are one nation; and together, we will begin the next great chapter in the American story with three words that will ring from coast to coast; from sea to shining sea: Yes We Can.” (emphasis mine)
Beautiful words, I suppose. I cannot help but wonder, however, if people would feel the same if McCain won. Hey Mr. Lefty, are we still one people if a Republican wins?

The Obama presidency is going to cost us dearly. It used to be that Bush was made fun of for 200billion and 300billion dollar deficit spending. But, Obama proposes 1 trillion and that is SPENDING our way out of a recession.
F*CK that. PERMANENT AND DEEP ACROSS THE BOARD TAX CUTS NOW. Is the solution. But how blind the liberals and the congress and the media are in this country. Instead of cutting back, like corporations and families are doing now, they are EXPANDING.
WHAT KIND OF FOOL EXPANDS POWER AND GOVERNMENT WHEN EVERYONE ELSE IS CUTTING BACK?
