Video: SNL tries to parody Coulter, fails epically
posted at 6:56 pm on January 18, 2009 by Allahpundit
They’ve got a staff full of professional liberal comedy writers, a decade’s worth of material on Coulter to work with, and … this is what they cooked up. Reason enough to grieve for the Obama years: With The One an impermissible target for satire, we’ll be dining on comic dreck like this for the foreseeable future.
They’re touting this on their site as a “web exclusive,” i.e. a skit that didn’t make the cut for broadcast. I wonder why.

Blowback

Kill your television.
Asher on January 18, 2009 at 7:03 PM
That was worse than awful. Puke city!
sondiehl on January 18, 2009 at 7:03 PM
That was horrible. I can do a better Ann Coulter than that!
terryannonline on January 18, 2009 at 7:05 PM
Not available in Australia either, I suppose I didn’t miss much.
Crux Australis on January 18, 2009 at 7:05 PM
OMG! Is that as good as they can get? That was gag-worthy.
armygirl on January 18, 2009 at 7:06 PM
EPIC FAIL !!
An Era of Hate on January 18, 2009 at 7:06 PM
was that supposed to be Coulter? totally lost me when they started the valley girl accent
theguardianii on January 18, 2009 at 7:08 PM
Not even close. The SNL character is much too nice compared with the real thing. They went easy on her.
John on January 18, 2009 at 7:10 PM
Why don’t they just get Ann to do Ann. Wouldn’t that be groundbreaking. Not to mention funnier. I’ll bet Ann doing comedy is soooo golden….
she could do stand up and knock the best of the best off stage. Quick on her feet, smart as a whip, dry as a bone, sharp as a tack… ok ok you get my drift.
SNL doesn’t have the cahones to do it!
katy on January 18, 2009 at 7:11 PM
Wait, it didn’t make the cut for broadcast? I thought it was saturday night live, right?
VolMagic on January 18, 2009 at 7:11 PM
ITs SNL you expected anything that was funny or talented ?
Its like the veiw its never going to be good.
William Amos on January 18, 2009 at 7:12 PM
That was horrendous to watch. Holy crap, SNL is stupid.
OneGyT on January 18, 2009 at 7:13 PM
Borrrrrrrrrrring
petefrt on January 18, 2009 at 7:13 PM
At least it made the cut for HotAir.
That was horrible.
Spirit of 1776 on January 18, 2009 at 7:13 PM
And what type person of says “Christiany”? I’ve never heard anyone use that word, much less Ann Coulter.
terryannonline on January 18, 2009 at 7:14 PM
ZZZZZZZ. Snooze and lose.
jencab on January 18, 2009 at 7:14 PM
SNL hasn`t been funny in years. The times I would check in on it, I`d see a sketch that`d make me think “what the hell is this?!”
ThePrez on January 18, 2009 at 7:15 PM
Was that forced laughter or someone hitting the laugh button?
3 minutes… cannot get back…. 3 minutes…
Kini on January 18, 2009 at 7:15 PM
I lasted a little under a minute.
The reason they can’t make fun of her is because she does a good job going after liberals. She isn’t a buffoon.
Also, their writers suck.
jimmy the notable on January 18, 2009 at 7:15 PM
Imagine that…………..
………. liberal democratic talking points involved in a 3rd grade skit that demonizes a Conservative satirist, all presented as popular culture.
Seven Percent Solution on January 18, 2009 at 7:16 PM
Terrible.
It seemed more like the Half Hour News Hour than SNL.
AprilOrit on January 18, 2009 at 7:17 PM
Doing a skit on Coulter will only give Coulter material to spoof them.
Blake on January 18, 2009 at 7:19 PM
Jeez, lighten up, its not like SNL is SUPPOSED to be funny
billypaintbrush on January 18, 2009 at 7:19 PM
Truly pathetic. And the fact that the voice and look are way off isn’t even the worst of it.
RightWinged on January 18, 2009 at 7:19 PM
That was…sophomoric.
ronsfi on January 18, 2009 at 7:22 PM
Awful.
And Ann is easy to parody. The way she speaks and her body language, pushing her hair away from her face, nodding her head for emphasis, is very distinct.
Had the pleasure of seeing her speak and she is quite stunning. Her hair seems to have it’s own light source.
CarolynM on January 18, 2009 at 7:23 PM
wow, that sucked. I couldn’t finish the drek.
aikidoka on January 18, 2009 at 7:23 PM
Shut it down at 1:20 and they are gone forever.
thomasaur on January 18, 2009 at 7:27 PM
I just went over to NBC.com and saw the opening skit portraying Dick Cheney as having no regrets. I think the opening skit was worst than his one!
terryannonline on January 18, 2009 at 7:28 PM
Typical SNL garbage.
Yes, they fail miserably. Almost as miserably as that ugly hag with the 2-pack a day voice (I forget her name) trying to copy Ann’s last book cover.
ErinF on January 18, 2009 at 7:28 PM
@CarolynM
Exactly, Ann Coulter is easy to parody! They should have no problem. I think Barely Political did a good job of poking fun at her! And who says television content is better than the stuff online!
terryannonline on January 18, 2009 at 7:30 PM
I lasted about 28 seconds. Thought it might get funny. Coulter is an easy target, if done right. This was not done right. Liberals think mocking a conservative succeeds on any level. And it does, with liberals of a certain intelligence level.
Buford Gooch on January 18, 2009 at 7:31 PM
I couldn’t stop laughing. I mean, they got evey single lunatic left talking point crammed into the blender.
Then they pushed the “purree” button.
platypus on January 18, 2009 at 7:31 PM
Has this tart ever seen Coulter?
Dollar Store laugh box.
RalphyBoy on January 18, 2009 at 7:33 PM
More hideous than the Ravens offense.
JammieWearingFool on January 18, 2009 at 7:33 PM
Feds are doing that for you on Feb 17th.
highhopes on January 18, 2009 at 7:34 PM
I lasted twenty seconds.
It wasn’t that they made their Coulter look alike as slutty as Michelle Obama is. It wasn’t that she didn’t resemble Coulter in the least. It was because it just wasn’t funny.
highhopes on January 18, 2009 at 7:37 PM
Dreadful.
sulla on January 18, 2009 at 7:39 PM
I’m sure it would have been much funnier if Al Franken had written it, but him being a Senator and all doesn’t give him much time for humor anymore… Oh wait, that is the joke.
Big John on January 18, 2009 at 7:42 PM
No it would have been equally unfunny if Al wrote. He hasn’t written anything funny since…..
well, never.
terryannonline on January 18, 2009 at 7:44 PM
She is ridiculously ripe for parody and this was all they came up with. I am dissapointed.
Squid Shark on January 18, 2009 at 7:46 PM
I killed mine about three months ago. I now watch reruns of classic shows like I Love Lucy, and I’m happy as a clam. My kids even love it. Nickelodeon has gotten so disgusting, it’s almost R-rated at times.
Also, for those that crave uplifting radio shows from a time when America was patriotic, go here and listen. It’s WW2 era radio shows including comedy, drama, and suspense, and they even have original commercials with then-Hollywood stars asking Americans to buy war bonds and support the military in every way possible. It almost makes me cry to listen sometimes, because the contrast is so stark from today’s Hollyweird.

canopfor on January 18, 2009 at 7:47 PM
I thought the money hungry grubbing of SNL to try and make a buck of AC was a lot like her, spot on … doesn’t have to be true, right a book, hike up the adams apple a little higher, get on Rush’s show and conservatives will buy it up, hook line and sinker … zzzzz
Monkei on January 18, 2009 at 7:49 PM
It’s funny only in that THIS is all they come up with because they can never refute Ann (or any of us) factually.
SouthernGent on January 18, 2009 at 7:49 PM
Judging by the comments,
Anne,seems to be affective!
canopfor on January 18, 2009 at 7:50 PM
But so did the Microsoft Songsmith commercial, the Youtube of “Star Wars” though the eyes of someone who hasn’t seen it, and Bush’s Sanctity of Life Day.
thuja on January 18, 2009 at 7:56 PM
Holy crap ErinF, no offense, but how old are you? You sound like the proverbial old man down the street yelling for the neighborhood kids to get off his lawn.
dakine on January 18, 2009 at 7:57 PM
Wise move.
mikeyboss on January 18, 2009 at 7:59 PM
I know! I never used to be this way. Both 9/11 and thought of a Marxist America has aged me quickly, I guess.
I’m a ripe old 32.
;)
ErinF on January 18, 2009 at 7:59 PM
There is a blog about there about a liberal guy who picks Ann Coulter up in the Los Angeles Farmer’s Market and takes her home. It is absolutely raunchy and very very funny.
But it is nasty, so I am not going to link to it. But you will know it when you find it. Google I use your imagination Ann Coulter.
Mr. Joe on January 18, 2009 at 8:03 PM
In its utter failure it becomes pure comedy.
canditaylor68 on January 18, 2009 at 8:08 PM
O…….K…….. Whatever you say…
ErinF on January 18, 2009 at 8:13 PM
She terrorizes the left.
For that alone I will always by several of her books, as gifts for the acquaintances on the right and the left.
Entelechy on January 18, 2009 at 8:17 PM
That is I will buy those books. Pay attention, E.
Entelechy on January 18, 2009 at 8:18 PM
Pathetic…truly pathetic. SNL certainly is no longer the SNL we thought we knew. Tired, poor acting, strained attempts at humor, not only on last night’s broadcast, but the past several seasons. Once was edgy, once engaged in honest to goodness political satire that left lampooned politicians on both sides of the aisle laughing at their own follies, or at the missteps of their opponents.
The Obama Administration, especially in the past several months of pre-Presidential transition, laid out a feast of subject matter that begged for necessary lampooning…but SNL apparently is no longer up to the task.
But, this attempt to lampoon Coulter, who is a ripe target for lampooning from time to time, is so stiff, so pained, so off the mark…c’mon SNL…pull you heads out of your anterior orifices and try, try at least a little bit, to follow the leads given you over the past several decades of real SNL political humor…
Even MadTV does a much much better job than SNL. And they are ending their run. Maybe, SNL should fold their tent as well. No longer relevant. So yesterday. So incredibly humorless.
G’night, SNL.
coldwarrior on January 18, 2009 at 8:19 PM
Don’t count on it. They are so self-important and so pathetic, they are the perfect candidates for bailout money.
ErinF on January 18, 2009 at 8:22 PM
That was pathetic but what would you expect. Nobody at SNL has ever actually seen Ann Coulter. They only know they hate her.
imshocked on January 18, 2009 at 8:28 PM
Without GWB in office, SNL, The Daily Show, and Colbert are all going to suffer miserably. Colbert not as much, cuz his whole shtick is bashing Bill O, but the other two will have little to no material..Of course, the shows have all sucked for some time, they’re just gonna suck a whole lot worse now.
Tim Zank on January 18, 2009 at 8:29 PM
These SNL writers act like they have a mental disability to comprehend Ann Coulter. The sharp riposte stabs at liberal hypocrisy, treason, and repetition of failed policies become mindlessly strung together religious phrases.
This is a straw man — the Ann Coulter that liberals WISH they had to deal with.
Right_of_Attila on January 18, 2009 at 8:29 PM
Of course it was lame; they can’t parody her properly because they don’t understand her. Based on that skit, I assume that they think Coulter’s dominant characteristic is unflinching support for George W. Bush’s policies? Really? That’s what they think is the core of Ann Coulter? She’s just a Bush apologist? Morons.
Also, they really could have done something interesting if they were willing to poke some of the satire back at themselves. What if Seth Myers actually had treated her the way that the Left’s journalists do (i.e., actually did go ahead and cut her off immediately instead of just pretending that she’s paranoid and crazy about the fact that journalists do like to cut her off and not let her speak). Gutless.
Kensington on January 18, 2009 at 8:33 PM
Lame.
The Aladdin skit had a few funny lines. But I might be biased because I love Rosario Dawson. (Who attended the RNC, btw.)
Tanya on January 18, 2009 at 8:33 PM
I bet there’s one person who finds this a howl: Ann Coulter.
And ErinF, I’d probably qualify as what some may find a grouchy old man, but like you I haven’t seen anything worth watching on the tube since my 30s. Good for you.
My unending impression of TV is that you turn it on and there’s some guy with a voice like Don Pardo greeting you with “Hi, Stupid.”
warbaby on January 18, 2009 at 8:33 PM
But, hey! I’m pretty sure I saw an Adam’s Apple on Seth Myers. Who knew he was really a man?
Kensington on January 18, 2009 at 8:33 PM
Maybe I should clarify my statement. The fact that they tried to parody her after having so much material to work with and failed so terribly at it,is humourous to my dark soul. I apologize. I also love that she irritates the liberals so much that they feel a need to scowl every time they say her name. The poor soul that last played “Ann Coulter” may she rest in peace would be insulted as well IMHO. The fact that this is available on the internet only tells me they know exactly how awful it really is-and for some odd reason I find that funny as he double toothpicks. No offense was intended to anyone.
canditaylor68 on January 18, 2009 at 8:35 PM
She’s much shriller, smarter and smilier in real life.
Mostly, the “smarter” part is why they failed. Smart satire – which is what Ann does – demands more subtle and much sharper wit than SNL dweebs are capable.
klickink.wordpress.com on January 18, 2009 at 8:37 PM
Wow, I only made it about halfway in. Epic fail indeed.
CP on January 18, 2009 at 8:37 PM
So I could understand their being inable to produce dialogue that would emulate Ann, but after watching about twenty seconds I am questioning whether or not they have ever even seen her talk? This woman made no attempt to sound like Ann or reproduce her mannerisms. I am again reminded why I haven’t watched SNL for the past five years.
drmanyee on January 18, 2009 at 8:39 PM
When Ann Coulter occasionally talks back to a rude interviewer that is talking over her, it is some sort of comedy material? Not genuflecting to the media is a major abberration in their eyes, but I think it is called “integrity”. Google it, SNL.
drunyan8315 on January 18, 2009 at 8:44 PM
Nah. She’d love it if it was funny. This disaster wouldn’t even be on her radar.
Tanya on January 18, 2009 at 8:46 PM
To SNL fans, the skit doesn’t have to be funny. SNL is automatically cool and people who have no ability to think for themselves, just assume it’s funny and laugh.
Even the canned laughter on this one was weak.
Pythagoras on January 18, 2009 at 8:50 PM
I’m with Katy (above) have Ann Coulter do Ann Coulter and I’d actually tune in. Better yet, have her Host SNL……..
The Left would go crazy……..!
mngirl on January 18, 2009 at 8:58 PM
Wow! Did Franken start writing for SNL again?
conservnut on January 18, 2009 at 9:00 PM
Even the Left-sympathetic NYC audience didn’t find that funny.
mankai on January 18, 2009 at 9:00 PM
First rule of comedy BE FUNNY! That was shockingly unfunny from the writing to the acting. Shocking.
Mr A on January 18, 2009 at 9:01 PM
I made it about 25 seconds. That’s the worse thing I have ever seen on the internet.
jewells45 on January 18, 2009 at 9:03 PM
Terrible.
davo on January 18, 2009 at 9:06 PM
Tanya, in case you missed it, I was referring to the stunning ineptitude displayed. I bet AC loved it.
warbaby on January 18, 2009 at 9:08 PM
OMG That was a long 3 minutes….Why oh why can’t we have a Gilda Radner again…
rich801 on January 18, 2009 at 9:12 PM
OMGoodness. Listen to the stunned silence of the audience, interrupted by nervous twitters.

Hard to parody something that’s already a walking joke.

Ann has a goiter, Can’t remember exactly what happened to her. If it is her thyroid. But can be serious condition. That is why it looks like she has a adam’s apple. The ignorance of some just make me laugh.
sheebe on January 18, 2009 at 9:43 PM
Yes, Rosario Dawson did.
Which confuses the heck out of me.
She started doing the whole Obama gushing schtick in her opening monologue, which dashed my hopes that she might be one of us.
So now, I’m just confused.
Hawkins1701 on January 18, 2009 at 9:47 PM
I’m all for making fun of Coulter – it isn’t tough, but SNL has lost its ability to make fun of politicians well.
ApartforHaShem on January 18, 2009 at 9:55 PM
sheebe on January 18, 2009 at 9:43 PM
That’s so sad. It’s too bad these SNL people can’t learn to treat her the way she treats people. If only everyone stopped to think of what Ann Coulter would say when interacting with others the world would be a much kinder and just place.
alex342 on January 18, 2009 at 9:56 PM
I’m a big fan of the term “libtard” too. It’s like you can rank people’s intelligence on a political continuum. Instead of IQ testing schools should just query children’s political leanings at an early age to determine giftedness or lack thereof.
alex342 on January 18, 2009 at 9:58 PM
So.
Not.
Laughing.
chunderroad on January 18, 2009 at 9:59 PM
What wonderful way you put this. You are right. I wasn’t attacking the person that wrote the post. Was the right time to say it. She is far from being a tranny. I love her, but at times I don’t agree with everything. She is a very intelligent and beautiful woman.
sheebe on January 18, 2009 at 10:01 PM
Have they ever watched a Coulter appearance?
Not only did that not even touch any of Coulter’s talking points, but it wasn’t even funny to begin with. Not funny at all.
And what’s with the valley girl accent?
Sir Corky on January 18, 2009 at 10:03 PM
SNL should know better than to satirize someone who embodies a walking-talking parody.
