Quotes of the day
posted at 9:35 pm on January 18, 2009 by Allahpundit
“Most Americans said they did not expect real progress in improving the economy, reforming the health care system or ending the war in Iraq — three of the central promises of Mr. Obama’s campaign — for at least two years. The poll found that two-thirds of respondents think the recession will last two years or longer…
‘I think those of us who voted for McCain are going to be a lot happier with Obama than the people who voted for him,’ Valerie Schlink, 46, a Republican from Valparaiso, Ind., said in an interview after participating in the poll. ‘A lot of the things he said he would do, like pulling out the troops in 16 months and giving tax cuts to those who make under $200,000, I think he now sees are going to be a lot tougher than he thought and that the proper thing to do is stay more towards the middle and ease our way into whatever has to be done.’”
*
“On his radio show last week, Rush Limbaugh railed against ‘people on our side of the aisle who have caved and who say, ‘Well, I hope he succeeds. We have to give him a chance.”
‘Why?’ Limbaugh demanded. ‘They didn’t give Bush a chance in 2000. Before he was inaugurated, the search-and-destroy mission had begun. I’m not talking about search-and-destroy, but I’ve been listening to Barack Obama for a year and a half. I know what his politics are. I know what his plans are, as he has stated them. I don’t want them to succeed.’”

Bush won election 2000 fair and square, if only Obama had run such a clean campaign.
As for a mandate, you guys really are funny. The State Senator did win a narrow victory by saying a whole lot of nothing a mandate, not so much.

Ahhh, I knew I could count on Rush to speak sense. If Obama’s “successful” it means that America will be turned into a Communist state, duh! Even if one doesn’t take the cynical view as I have above, wishing Obama “success” out of some misguided, high-minded pro-America nonsense, it means the voters will re-elect him in four years. Either way, I hope he is a miserable failure!

Republicans who say this aren’t smart enough to realize that “succeeds” doesn’t mean what they think it means, as far as Obama is concerned.
The country could go full throttle Marxist and the parasite majority will see it as an awesome success. The parasites can live pretty well for decades consuming the wealth that has been generated in this country for the last 200 years. The Soviets, North Koreans, Cubans, etc., wish they could have been so lucky.
Republicans better do everything in their power to damage this Obama clown’s presidency and limit him to one term.

Rush continued:
Bravo Mr Limbaugh, I’ll say it with you, I hope he fails.

How many times do people have to be given the facts? EVERY major news organization went down and recounted the votes over and over, and no matter how they counted them, Bush came out the clear winner.
On top of that- Fox called the race BEFORE the polls even closed in Florida. The polling places in the panhandle, which are Republican strongholds (and were an hour behind the rest of the state) saw a marked decrease in turnout. Many people thought it was a waste to go stand in line and vote, so they went home. Some estimate Bush lost 10, 000 votes in these areas due to the race being called an hour early.
It’s sort of like the people, despite all the mounds of evidence to the contrary, who still argue that Bush somehow “lied” and created the war in Iraq under false pretenses.

Term Limits are indeed the answer.
And if all else fails, there is a “restart” button. It’s called the second amendment.

I find that most people who hold this view — that the Supreme Court “stole” the 2000 election for Bush — haven’t even bothered to take the time to read the opinion in the case. It wasn’t close, either. Fully 7 of the justices agreed that the recount violated the Equal Protection Clause. Basically, Florida screwed their own pooch with their poorly constructed election laws. The “intent of the voter” standard is not a useful one in presidential elections where time is of the essence. Better to have things codified. That’s all the majority was really saying: If you’re going to have standards for a recount, they better be uniform and they better be in place BEFORE you need to resort to them. Sounds fair to me.
Oh those strict constructionists! Always interpreting the Constitution within the four corners of the document instead of inferring all manner of rights and privileges that the Founders never intended. It’s funny how for these people the Constitution is a “living, breathing document,” except when it comes to the 2nd Amendment.

I think what people mean–or should mean–when they say they hope Obama succeeds, is not that they hope that he himself succeeds, nor the policies that we hate succeed. It’s that his presidency succeeds insofar as the country is not damaged irreparably, because if that happens–a true depression, a domestic terrorist attack–Americans suffer, Americans are killed, and that may include people we actually DO like. No one can possibly want that, even if it results in the bloom coming off the Obama rose, or it results in a conservative president in 2012. If a single American death is, in your mind, a worthwhile sacrifice for a new president in 2012, or a new Congress in 2010, then you truly are deranged.
The fact is that America has survived two World Wars, a civil war in which 600,000 Americans died, any number of depressions, Soviet infiltration, ongoing Islamic infiltration, and has not only survived, but conguered its enemies. True Conservatives are people who believe in America’s greatness, and who have faith in American principles and ultimately, in the American people. It may look bad now, but, please, enough with the “if we have a country in four years.” That’s historical ignorance, at the very least, and is not true Conservatism. Liberals are defeatists, not Conservatives.

I guess we can argue about the meaning of “success”. Those who predict another deadly attack do not in any way hope for such a thing. They believe Obama’s policies of appeasement, retreat and surrender will bring about a lowering of our guard and make such an attack more likely.
His love of government spending on social programs and his disdain for the military will likely cause a shift in spending priorities. This may weaken the military and cause a reduction of forces where they are needed most.
Research and development of weapons systems will suffer. Therefore, our ability to deflect future more sophisticated attacks will suffer.
The economy in general will suffer under an explosion of new federal spending. Deficits will rise. Confidence in the strength of the dollar will diminish. Taxes will increase on the people who create the jobs; so jobs will disappear.
And all the while a fawning media will hail Obama’s brilliance, erecting golden idols to his saintliness and blaming all of the failures on Bush, the pitiful minority of Republicans in Congress and the “negative feesings” of those who have not yet been assimilated.
I stand with Rush. I hope he fails.

How do you start that conversation with followers of a Cult of Personality? ‘Cult of personality’ is a much more troubling symptom, and one which needs a healthy discussion, too. For example, how many today even know what that phrase means?

The irony of the white guilt climax, making the 1st black president from the minority of blacks that doesn’t relate back to the slaves.

Your description of the future sounds like a repeat of the “glorious 90′s” when the libs spent the peace dividend earned by Presidents Reagan and BushI.
That of course brought us all the attacks leading to 911.
But of course we all know that the incompetent Bushh II planned 911 in order to enrich the oil companies.

The whole spectacle of this inauguration is so over-the-top that it needs to be condemned by people who have any sense whatsover. I have heard the most inane comments from Obama supporters. I believe he is actually the messiah for those liberals who do not believe in God. They need something to believe in and follow in order to achieve the social justice they need and so they worship at the alter of the U.N. and now Obama. These people truly are sheeple.
I, too, hope Obama fails completely in his and his party’s quest to socialize America. I have 2 boys and I am teaching them many things about socialism, victimization and all the other “isms” they need to fight in order to stay free.
I just wish the coronation would hurry up and end . . .
KickandSwimMom on January 19, 2009 at 7:55 AM
I think you’re on to something here. They’re so desperately in search for a deity–it’s only a matter of time before we see the First Church of Obama appearing. Just as the ancient Romans made Augustus Caesar into a god, the left is trying to make Obama into a god. Big difference here–Obama is really more a Caligula type than an Augustus. Big difference between Caligula and Obama–Obama hasn’t tried to make his horse a consul yet–wait–he did make Biden his vice president, so Obama did make his horse a public official–the comparison is now complete. Q. E. D.
Matt Helm on January 19, 2009 at 8:05 AM
There’s no true “mandate”. Obama had a simple majority and there remains about one half of the country terribly displeased that he is in office. Enjoy your time in the sun but remember it’s fleeting, so don’t overplay the effect of this election.
rplat on January 19, 2009 at 8:12 AM
This whole scene with the inauguration is pathetic and humiliating for the nation. I was watching Morning Joe, and Scarborough asked his panel why this inauguration was different from any other. Not one person had the guts to say that it was due to skin color (as that is the only factor, unless one counts total icompetence as being worthy of such a celebration) – Martin Luther King’s kid was on the panel and he played dumb about this, too. It was embarrassing to watch them all squirm and try to make up excuses for the over-the-top inauguration.
In future history books, the scenes from these days are going to be textbook examples of mass insanity and the ultimate triumph of race over everything else. No wonder Michelle O is finally proud – to her race is the only thing.

Cheerfulness Taught by Reason
by: Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861)
I THINK we are too ready with complaint
In this fair world of God’s. Had we no hope
Indeed beyond the zenith and the slope
Of yon grey blank of sky, we might be faint
To muse upon eternity’s constraint
Round our aspirant souls. But since the scope
Must widen early, is it well to droop,
For a few days consumed in loss and taint?
O pusillanimous Heart, be comforted,–
And, like a cheerful traveler, take the road–
Singing beside the hedge. What if the bread
Be bitter in thine inn, and thou unshod
To meet the flints?–At least it may be said,
“Because the way is short, I thank thee, God!”

What’s wrong with a good epithet? As long as you don’t use it too much; a good cuss word shows passion and emotion at just the right time. How many people know that Lincoln was a master cursor? No, not ‘that Lincoln’, the original one!

I know I don’t want Obama to fail, I expect him to.
You can’t hype something up that much and have it live to every single expectation. You are setting up a major disappointment for a lot of people.
Rush wants what’s best for the country. He doesn’t want Obama to succeed because Rush feels that his policies are bad for the country. If Obama succeeds, this country will not be recgonizable. It will be a shell of it’s former self.
Pcoop on January 19, 2009 at 9:04 AM
what’s wrong with a good F-bomb every once in a while? I actually have a lot of respect for that word. It’s so versatile.
Pcoop on January 19, 2009 at 9:05 AM
You can’t. I know, I’ve tried. It’s like a collective brain fever. This is how republics crumble – get a charismatic leader, have a corn dole, and give the people bread and circuses. I don’t know if this will make you feel better or worse, but John McLame (the worst Republican ever and that’s saying a lot) says he would have appointed the same people to his cabinet.
Ann NY on January 19, 2009 at 9:06 AM
I am beginning to believe that the blind supporters of Obama are experiencing such a profound sense of relief. For the last eight years, they lived in a world where individualism, independence, hard work, entrepreneurial spririt and the chance to succeed were predominant. For the next four years, they can go back to the comfort of dependency. Delusional devotion is not a by-product of hope, it’s just another excuse to not have to go fight for it.
sherry on January 19, 2009 at 9:12 AM
It’s not about “wanting Obama to fail”.
It’s about the people in this country that are in touch with reality and see a failed community organizer being ordained
and glorified as the savior of the world with no real history of accomplishments to back up all this hero worship.
This Paparazzi President is already backtracking on most if not all of the platform he campaigned on and the “smart ones” just keep chanting “yes we can”,”yes we can” while Obama and his staff are saying “uh,on second thought”,
“NO WE CAN’T”!!
“NO WE CAN’T”!!

When reality sets in,all the paparazzi and spinning speeches are not going to make up for failed polices and lack of results.
These cultist think Obama’s mere presence and oratory is going to “change the world” but are apparently oblivious to the fact he couldn’t even change his district in Chicago.

Should German Jews have wanted Hitler to succeed when he came to power in the early 1930s? After all, it was during the great depression.
“Success” for Obama means death for America. Why would Rush or any conservative want that?

It’s going to be a very difficult task, no doubt about it. The problem is more severe than just getting past Obama’s cult of personality, which will inevitably fade over the next few years. The diehard Obama True Believers are not much different from the hardcore constituency of the Democrat Party, and cannot be communicated with or educated under any president – they would have been no less mindless in their devotion to John Kerry, they just would have been less open enthusiastic about it. The great mass of middle American voters will sour on the hero worship stuff, not only because of Obama’s personal deficiencies and the outcome of his policies, but because the American character is just too ornery and individualistic. They’ll simply get tired of him, and the media worship will just accelerate that process, because it will make Obama an annoying omnipresence they can never escape from. It’s already happening – I’ve heard a lot of people grumbling over the in-your-face excesses of the inaugural, and heard a whole room full of people groan out load when they saw a CBS commercial using Obama’s campaign slogan to advertise their TV shows. Obama might be the first president to generate a significant amount of public fatigue before he even takes office.
The real problem is communicating with an electorate that has largely abandoned its sense of reason in favor of pure emotionalism. Too many of them respond to mindless, and often blatantly illogical, emotional manipulation, a state of affairs the cultural Left has been deliberately building for generations. Was there every any real doubt that these massive stimulus and bailout bills would get passed? There was a brave moment when congressional Republicans tried to slow down the gravy train, in the first days after the Fannie Mae crisis broke, but it seemed inevitable that the Treasury spigot would be opened, because it’s become inconceivable that the federal government would not react to any crisis by loudly announcing its intention to immediately spend a huge amount of money. It’s also inconceivable that they would not react to a problem in the private sector by trying to seize control of the industry involved. The public has been conditioned to demand nothing less, and they demand it immediately – the media whips them into a frenzy. It’s the same technique that car salesmen use to keep you from wandering off the lot to carefully consider the $30,000 purchase you’re about to make.
Over the next year or two, the panic-spending approach will begin to go bust, either because the titanic Obama deficits cause the economic system to collapse, or because horrific tax increases will be slapped on the American people to pay for all this “stimulus.” This will be the moment to speak frankly to the voters, and patiently, passionately explain the dangerous precedent of allowing government to seize control of the private sector. – especially when blind worship of a power-hungry, charismatic leader is mixed in. Republican politicians must make them understand they’re about to take their nation over a cliff, and resist this disastrous course in every particular, no matter how many of their esteemed Democrat colleagues must be exposed and censured in the process. The voters are still, for the most part, adults – they just need to be reminded of what they are, what they were, and what they could be again. This will be a painful process – it will be much easier for Republicans to embrace Obama and his allies, announce what a swell bunch of guys they think they are, and hope the media rewards them for being “bipartisan.”
Doctor Zero on January 19, 2009 at 10:40 AM
Obama’s economic plan would bring trillion dollar deficits for years. Obama said so himself.
