Video: Obama launches the permanent campaign

posted at 4:53 pm on January 17, 2009 by Allahpundit

You didn’t think he was going to disband the cult just because he’s president now, did you? Behold the launch of Hopenchange 2.0: Turning his grassroots organization from an operation to get him elected into an operation to pressure members of Congress to adopt his agenda. And by “members of Congress,” I don’t mean Republicans.

Organizers and even Republicans say the scope of this permanent campaign structure is unprecedented for a president. People familiar with the plan say Obama’s team would use the network in part to pressure lawmakers — particularly wavering Democrats — to help him pass complex legislation on the economy, healthcare and energy…

Though the plan still is emerging, one source with knowledge of the internal discussion said the organization could have an annual budget of $75 million in privately raised funds. Another said it would deploy hundreds of paid staff members — possibly one for every congressional district in certain politically important states and even more in larger battlegrounds such as Florida, Ohio, Colorado, Virginia and North Carolina…

Concerns about Obama’s ambitions are coming from state party leaders as well as from Capitol Hill.

The party needs to be rooted not just around one individual, but it needs to have a grass-roots base that can survive the times and even endure past whoever may be in office,” said Jerry Meek, chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Party. “Obama brings a lot to the table, but, on the other hand, state parties exist for more than serving the objectives of the president and are in the business to elect county commissioners, school board members and members of the legislature.”

What fascinates me is his faith that his supporters, almost all of whom are Democrats, can be counted on to side with him on policy against … other Democrats. There’s no reason in principle to believe that’s true — Obamites logically should prefer his position on economic recovery to McCain’s, but to Chris Dodd’s or Barney Frank’s? — but it’s perfectly sensible if you view Obamamania as a cult of personality with The One as the object in whom all trust is reposed. (See also.) He does a superb job of cultivating it too, from using the paparazzi to enhance his status as an icon to dumping one dopey Lincoln allusion after another on a media that’s itching to make the comparison. In theory it’s a bad idea to have a party “rooted around” one individual — but The One isn’t just any individual, or so we should believe. If Lincoln told you to dial up some Blue Dog Democrat and ask him to vote for another bailout, you’d do it, wouldn’t you? Well, there you go.

“The party needs to be rooted not just around one individual, but it needs to have a grass-roots base that can survive the times and even endure past whoever may be in office,” said Jerry Meek, chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Party.

HA HA HA!

Obama NOT be in office?

What crazy talk is this?

One leeetle constitutional amendment out the window will solve that problem.

Then our new wonderful dictator can be ours for life.

Hawkins1701 on January 17, 2009 at 5:01 PM

The organization, known internally as “Barack Obama 2.0,” is being designed to sustain a grass-roots network of millions that was mobilized last year to elect Obama and now is widely considered the country’s most potent political machine.

So ACORN is getting a new name and an official role in the administration.

in arkansas, where everyone is a “democrat” on state matters (excpetion was gop huckabee, became governor after dem governor resigned), but still votes republican nationally this oughta be REAAAAALL pointless.

i can see it now, obama brings in agri-farm boy-God-gays-guns blue dog congressman berry into the white house… “Rep. berry, vote my way or we’ll support your dem challenger, a gay philosophy professor who is an avowed socialist”….. cue congressman guffawing, walking out the door whistling, ensured of another term

come to think of it, in what state/district/PLANET will this work? the elected official represents the political mood of the voters. what will obama do, threaten to support the MORE CONSERVATIVE democrat to san fransciso or something????

stupid. plan.

I am not so sure this will work out over time. After all, once history is made and Obama is really in the White House, people might move onto the next big thing.

Terrye on January 17, 2009 at 5:07 PM

Of course, this was observed as the ultimate outcome of his grassroots operation last summer. They would become a part of an incorporated operation that would be utilized in strong arming pols into endorsing Obama’s plan. They’ll probably be stipend also.

Personally I think the idea sprang from the effectiveness the grassroots Republicans had in stopping immigration reform. The Dems only really have the lefty loons on the net and none really on radio, so they needed a different resource. Thus the focus on creating so many Obama storefront operations during the elections.

Texas Gal on January 17, 2009 at 5:07 PM

I honestly don’t think the Americans he’s trying to leverage have the attention span to continue idolizing him for 2 years, much less 8+.

A lot of my online friends were very pro-Obama and all about politics during the election.

As soon as the election was over, their interest in politics and even Obama completely disappeared. They were no longer posting on a regular basis about how wonderful he was and all the hopenchange he was going to bring.

His entire power base is dependent (right now) on people with an attention span of less than 30 seconds (and that’s 30 seconds if it’s something they care about like the new American Idol premier).

JadeNYU on January 17, 2009 at 5:08 PM

You hit it on the head Allah, the Democrat ball is rolling now. Not only will they pay for Congressional votes but the grass root organizations will keep a tight lid on opposition at the community level.
The Republicans are nowhere near as organized. They failed to grasp the power of using government money to organize like the dems.

I can’t see how Obama can keep up the level of enthusiasm and engagement that he had. What went on was akin to an infatuation. Even if it leads to a hasty marriage, there comes the time when one wakes up next to something less than a romantic ideal. (Didn’t Mrs. Greivance herself once refer to the One in the morning as “stinky and snorey”?)

And Obama is backtracking or stalling on so much: FISA, stem cell research, Gitmo, card check, withdrawal from Iraq, Freedom of Choice abortion act, etc. They supported him because he was to enact their agenda. When he doesn’t they’ll drift away or turn on him.

Prostitution free zone“, now in Washington D.C. – the irony of all ironies, with our national Congress there.

Best comment, from Maryland moron rep thread

Does this mean all of the elected officials will have to miss the event?

What we need is to assemble a grass-roots COMMUNICATION system, with a mission to relay well established principles and detailed solutions to existing problems. Most people are unaware of alternate solutions to our problems, besides “Obama will save us”.

This is the key: communication = education, which in turn breeds acceptance of values

stonemeister on January 17, 2009 at 6:11 PM

Texas Gal brings something interesting up: This really is the most organized attempt by a political figure to move public opinion. Did anyone go on RCP yet and look at Obama’s approval rating: it’s at 65-75%. That’s amazing. If a GOPer’s treasury secretary didn’t pay taxes or commerce secretary went out in scandal or the AZ gov caught in a corruption scandal, the media would have been up in arms.

Artist: we won the economic battle, mostly. The tax rates will probably never go up to pre-Reagan levels. Education battle is tough b/c even Utah voted down vouchers. We’re seeing a turnaround in immigration, which for the 2010 census, Ca and other states may lose congressional districts. AS for the media/cultural battle, the only way that this will be even fought if conservatives start buying or starting media outlets. Right now if you’re an economic conservative, you’re heartless. If you’re pro-life, you’re a trog, etc etc.

You think the GOP will repair the education system?

What makes you think that?

IR-MN on January 17, 2009 at 6:12 PM

We already HAVE relevant media outlets: the internet! What we need is a system to connect conservative websites with many access points to the public. MMA, MO, and even DailyKos have done that, mainly by linking to the old TV networks and NYT.

We can do the same things, but we’d have to be more clever about it.

Yeah, and Lincoln lost Fort Sumter, Bull Run, Antitam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and a few others thrown in. Appomattox still happened.

This has been an issue the RNC chair candidates have been addressing. They saw what kind of networks Obama and Dean both built. Now they realize they must do the same – on the ground and on the internet. They have a lot of catching up to do. It will take time and money, but if Obama stalls, chokes, waffles, or caves to Nancy & Harry, the opening is there.

Wethal on January 17, 2009 at 6:16 PM

What will be interesting to watch is if Obama pushes Pelosi’s ego button to hard. She has an agenda too and the two shall not alway see eye to eye. Who will win this head to head match up of grip.
Like with the stem cell argument, he will pawn it off the legislative branch if it becomes to hot a topic. How will Pelosi handle this kind of pressure from the same team. They can’t blame the administration anymore.

His forever campaign, may push Peolsi over the edge because Obama will over shadow her in the Democratic party.

Actually I refer to Barry as the “Seinfeld President” because it’s a presidency about nothing.

What we need is to assemble a grass-roots COMMUNICATION system

It’s called the HAM radio, and we can use the HAM’s to talk to one another from our scattered survivors compounds and bunkers.

I’m only kidding. Or am I?

It doesn’t have to take much of either, relatively speaking. If they architect a viable information network of links between the existing WWW, high profile media people, compatible press and broadcast media, we can win this battle. After all, we have vastly superior ideas and values!

We tried to counter with radio and internet.

And couldn’t get our message through.

We fought the media battle and got crushed.
