Israel to announce cease-fire?

posted at 1:28 pm on January 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

And unilaterally, as the BBC reports.  Rather than get entangled in a cease-fire agreement that Hamas will likely violate as soon as they possibly can, the IDF will simply stop in place at an undetermined H-Hour.  If Hamas stops attacking, Israel will continue, but if not, the IDF will be in place to continue its operations:

Israeli sources told the BBC’s Middle East editor, Jeremy Bowen, that Mr Olmert would announce an end to offensive military operations from “H-Hour”, the exact timing of which is not yet clear.

In a televised address set for 2200 (2000 GMT), Mr Olmert was expected to link the move to Israel having achieved its goal of curtailing rocket fire from Hamas-linked militants, the sources said.

If rocket fire continued after “H-Hour”, Israel would respond, the sources said.

If there was a single incident, Israel would hit back “surgically”; if there were more attacks Israel would go back on the offensive, they said.

The sources stressed that this was a unilateral action by Israel.

Israeli sources tell the BBC that Olmert and his Cabinet decided to rely on assurances from Europe and the US that they could partner with Egypt to stop the smuggling of rockets and mortars into Gaza.  That may have played into the decision, but at some point, the IDF may have recognized the law of diminishing returns.  If they have successfully reduced the Hamas positions they know and have fully exploited their intelligence, the need to continue their offensive ends.

In this instance, a cease fire might benefit the Israelis more than Hamas anyway.  It allows for intelligence sources to develop on enemy positions, as it’s difficult for people to transmit that while the guns fire into their neighborhoods.  It also puts pressure on Hamas to knuckle under to Israeli demands, and an failure to honor the cease-fire gives Israel better standing to continue its offensive.

Hamas, for its part, has not stopped.  They fired seven more rockets into Israel, showing that they still have offensive capabilities.  However, Hamas has split on the issue of a cease-fire, with its international leadership rejected the notion and the Gazans hoping for some sort of respite.  The unilateral Israeli cessation may put enough pressure on this division to cause a significant fracture, both within Hamas and between Hamas and their Iranian sponsors.

In any case, the Israelis continue to control the situation, and Hamas is left with few options, and no good ones.

that would end this with Israel having cut Gaza in half, and having decimated the terror group. With 2 days to spare no less.

Israel is playing whack a mole with Hamas, right now Hamas heads are tucked way down low. Israel will temporarily cease firing just long enough for the Hamassholes to peek their heads up out of their holes. Bingo Israel has new targets to shoot at… Go IDF…..

Are you serious? The Israeli goal was to end the threat of rocket attacks. How does a unilateral cease fire do that? Israel may have kneecapped Hamas, but they didn’t accomplish what they wanted to accomplish and what they said they would accomplish.

I’m sorry, did the USA ever fight a war with the intent of achieving a “truce” or a “cease fire”.
This can only end with hamas surrendering unconditionally and in disgrace.
Course with the conditions they describe, the “truce” may only last a few hours, which may be their plan…

I just reread Revelation 12. Satan hates Israel. Satan hates Christians. Increasingly, so does the world. As Christians, we do not fight against flesh and blood, but the spiritual warfare behind what the eyes can see.

Buckle up and stay prayed up! Interesting times we live in.

BTW, I’m not saying Israel shouldn’t defend itself. I’m not saying that Christians shouldn’t defend themselves or their families. I’m just saying there is a “real” war going on. There won’t be peace until the Prince of Peace returns! Until then, we can stand for truth, and love, and tell the world about the love Jesus has for the world. Peace can only come through Him ultimately.

Strategery…

This might succeed if the aim is to deepen the rift between factions of Hamas, and expectations are limited. If the goal is to change perceptions in the wider world, it will fail due to bleeding-heart sentiment for the Palestinians prevalent in the media and amongst leftist sheep the world over.

hillbillyjim on January 17, 2009 at 1:54 PM

IMO agreeing to any ceasefire is foolish until the Hamas leadership is all dead or captured. This includes those hiding in Syria.

Yes, I think so. Plus, there is this:

However, Hamas has split on the issue of a cease-fire, with its international leadership rejected the notion and the Gazans hoping for some sort of respite. The unilateral Israeli cessation may put enough pressure on this division to cause a significant fracture, both within Hamas and between Hamas and their Iranian sponsors.

As long s they leave their troops in place, this isn’t a bad short term move. It also offers the opportunity for Joe Sixpack Gazan citizen to contemplate the misery that additional rockets into Israel brings back to him.

a capella on January 17, 2009 at 2:05 PM

It sounds reasonable as far as it goes. The only reason for a cease fire is victory. Victory isn’t here yet and I am sure that is why Israel is doing this unilaterally. If they have run out of targets, this will surely hilight some.

Someday Israel may determine it has to do just that. For now it looks like they are going to claim victory and the high ground. I think everyone, especially Israel, knows that Hamas won’t honor a cease fire, especially when they have orders from Iran to continue. Hamas will keep fighting and then so will Israel with the argument of, “hey, we tried.”

In the meantime, Islam will always be the enemy of Israel and Christians because of the spiritual war I spoke of earlier.

Israel appears to have finally learned the fine art of the ‘hudna’. Good for them.

ElectricPhase on January 17, 2009 at 2:22 PM

There is no way a Gaza “peace” is possible when there are 20,000 AK-47 and RPG armed terrorists hiding out in the rubble and waiting to take their places in the “government” when Israel stops shooting and digging them out and killing them. What any “normal thinking” Gazan thinks doesn’t matter.
***
I don’t think there are many “normal thinking” Gazans anyway–after 20+ years of brainwashing in Jihadi thinking and actions they are like the WW2 Nazi Germans or Imperial Japanese people. There are very few innocent people there–only future Jihadis and their supporters / enablers. Remember the “high fives” and “Allah Akbars” and joy in the Gaza Streets when T.V. showed our people jumping to their deaths from the Twin Towers on 9/ 11 rather than burning to death.
***
PEACE FOLLOWS VICTORY–IT DOES NOT PRECEDE IT! After Israel wipes out the Jihadis then re-education can take place–modern Germany and Japan are the examples of what is possible after the evildoers are removed from a country.
***
Israel must fight on and win–no quarter, no ceasefire. They made a big mistake trading land for peace–they got an armed terrorist camp instead. Learn and live–or die in Holocaust II when Iran gives HAMAS their nuke. Inaccurate rocket fire doesn’t mean anything then.

Israeli sources tell the BBC that Olmert and his Cabinet decided to rely on assurances from Europe and the US that they could partner with Egypt to stop the smuggling of rockets and mortars into Gaza.

It would appear that Egypt has already reneged.

DEBKA – Cairo disavowed Saturday, Jan. 17 any understandings with Israel and the US on collaboration for ending the flow of weapons to Hamas and launched a fierce attack on Israel.

In a televised speech to the nation, hours before the Israeli defense cabinet was to announce a unilateral ceasefire ending the three-week Operation Cast Lead, President Hosni Mubarak said Israel must accept an “immediate unconditional ceasefire and a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip.” No international monitors would be allowed on Egyptian soil, he said.

His foreign minister Aboul Gheit said Israel was drunk on violence.

“We have no commitment towards this memo whatsoever and it does not concern us” he told reporters, and called Israel “the main obstacle to a ceasefire.”

The Egyptian foreign minister went on to say the smuggling tunnels were used mainly for food – not arms.

Cairo’s sharp comments followed claims by Jerusalem sources of good progress in talks with Egypt on cooperation for ending the arms smuggling to Gaza.

With Hamas leadership still alive and publicly declaring vengeance, this doesn’t end. With Hamas leadership still publicly declaring ‘resistance’ to ‘Israeli occupation’ then Hamas defines Israeli operations as ‘occupation’ and it never ends.

As others have stated, this ends only when Hamas leadership is dead, and no one else wants to take up arms against Israel.

Skandia Recluse on January 17, 2009 at 3:09 PM

Israel must continue to prosecute this campaign with extreme prejudice. Hamas must be ground into the dirt, unconditionally surrender or extermination are their only options.

dmann on January 17, 2009 at 3:11 PM

Attack, cease fire, retreat….repeat ad nauseum.

Why do I see on TV all the Hamas leaders in Lebanon, Syria and other Middle Eastern countries, but not in Gaza? Did Israel let them escape? Were they never in Gaza in the first place?

To have peace one side must totally lose and surrender and the other side wins unconditionally.

Or is this just an “Obama Inauguration” pause?…..

That’s what I’m leaning towards. They’ve eradicated a lot of equipment and leadership (clearly not enough since the attacks continue), but they aren’t done yet. I think this is a bunch of rhetoric and propaganda until they warm up the jets again.

It’s only a cease fire as long as Hamas doesn’t fire any more rockets. Of course Hamas will fire more rockets. It’s another great PR move by Israel. Israel says “See? We stopped. We are providing aid and humanitarian supplies”. Shortly followed by yet another Hamas missile. OK, Back to bombing the crap out of Hamas who violated the cease fire and provoked a response.

El Coqui on January 18, 2009 at 4:53 PM

Israel gets a win both ways… if Hamas accepts and the rockets stop… they can claim victory. If Hamas sends more rockets over… they can regain some moral ground lost over the last few weeks through killing so many civilians. It helps remind people why the operation happened. I personally think this is all about the upcoming elections.

By the way Israel is withdrawing from Gaza… there is no benefit to having the IDF stay there.

If there is a lasting ceasefire Hamas will have to stop their own and other militants attacks on Israel. For its part.. Israel will have to open the borders so Gaza has access to aid and some sort of economy. It is back to square one as far as both sides are concerned. The blockade violated the truce as much as the rockets. All this was a song and dance for political purposes.
