Tom Hanks: Prop 8 supporters are “un-American”
posted at 1:13 pm on January 16, 2009 by Allahpundit
The boss wonders when, precisely, it became “progressive” again to level this charge against one’s opponents. Hasn’t it always been? Just in the past few months, we’ve seen Pelosi toss it at TARP naysayers and Jennifer Granholm fling it at critics of the auto bailout. Given Biden’s framing of the economic crisis as an emergency equivalent to war, I expect to hear from Harry Reid any day now that opposing the stimulus is quasi-treason.
“The truth is this [show, "Big Love,"] takes place in Utah, the truth is these people are some bizarre offshoot of the Mormon Church, and the truth is a lot of Mormons gave a lot of money to the church to make Prop-8 happen,” he told Tarts. “There are a lot of people who feel that is un-American, and I am one of them. I do not like to see any discrimination codified on any piece of paper, any of the 50 states in America, but here’s what happens now. A little bit of light can be shed, and people can see who’s responsible, and that can motivate the next go around of our self correcting Constitution, and hopefully we can move forward instead of backwards. So let’s have faith in not only the American, but Californian, constitutional process.”
Rusty’s pithy rebuttal: “Also un-American by this definition? Americans.” Exit question one: Anything “un-American” about Jerry Brown’s attempt to have a constitutional amendment declared unconstitutional? Exit question two: How far, in his immaculate American-ness, would Hanks be willing to go to make sure “people can see who’s responsible”? This far?

When did marriage become a right?
JAM on January 16, 2009 at 3:57 PM
Your brilliant discourse has convinced me, when I get the opportunity to vote on Prop 8 I will seek your guidance.
Does Yes mean “Tastes Great” and No mean “Less Filling”, or is it the other way around?
NoDonkey on January 16, 2009 at 3:57 PM
STFU Tom Hanks. Another Hollywood jackal trying to push the agenda.
Boycott these jokers at the box office.
FireBlogger on January 16, 2009 at 3:59 PM
52% are, yes, compared to 60% just eight years earlier on the last gay marriage vote. luckily the old bigots are dying off and the millenials support gay marriage by 2 to 1, so victory is not far off. sadly, battles against bigots like yourself must be waged in the interim.
Noneya on January 16, 2009 at 3:59 PM
still lost.
HornetSting on January 16, 2009 at 4:00 PM
indeed, but unlike the GOP, the future of gay marriage is bright.
Noneya on January 16, 2009 at 4:05 PM
This is just a ploy by the gift shops and the wedding industry, to ruin more football weekends.
How about just banning all weddings?
I mean, I had a blast at mine but I’d be cool with having my weekends free in the future.
NoDonkey on January 16, 2009 at 4:06 PM
Heh. Noneya, who is the poster child of bigotry, accuses someone else of being a bigot.
Methinks she doth protest too much.

In this post, Cicero43 covers basicaly my position on the matter. A fair definition of law (in general) would be codified intolerance. So, Tom Hanks seems to have outed himself as an anarchist. Does he own copyrights? I wonder how feels about the codified intolerance for people using his intellectual property without paying him royalties?

So is a nuclear explosion.
Gay marriage = Hiroshima. Noneya admitted it.

You can’t breed. I’d say the future is dim, kind of like you, noneya.

This is another thread that’s getting ruined by the back and forth with the troll Noneya.
I’ll never respond to him/her/it again.
Back to the very serious stuff:
I hear Tom is working on the enlightened sequels “Forest Gump H*mps R*mps” to be followed by “Band of Brothers Wants Each Other – A Love Story.”

Holding back is still better than the absolute cessation of procreation, which is what you advocate.
malclave on January 16, 2009 at 4:10 PM
Good point. By definition, anything you have to get a license for is a privilege.
Maxx on January 16, 2009 at 4:12 PM
Really? I was thinking that things like rape, torture, murder and the slaughter of innocents was at least a little worse.
Thanks for schooling me.
So Democracy is now the same as terrorism? If that how you justify the attacks on little old ladies?
Historically speaking, gays have no history of marriage to compare, and as far as the sound mind is concern, in the past that was debatable.
Besides, if we’re talking about legal marriages in the US, they would all require people who can legally sign a contract, which would exclude the insane and the too young.
I honestly don’t get people who are only for gay marriage but not for opening up marriage to everyone. Otherwise, you’re still discriminating.
And yet you spew racist things here and hide behind nothing. Is that supposed to be better?
Esthier on January 16, 2009 at 4:13 PM

I for one, welcome our newest dopey troll.

Hornet, you might want to get up to speed regarding modern “breeding” techniques. Gay folk can, and do, “breed”.

The simplicity of thought expressed in this statement is mind blowing. A typical anti-theist sees theism as the cause of all problems just like a typical anti-semite sees those dirty Joooooos behind every catastrophe. Say hi to Courtney Love for me.

Who are these “millenials” of whom you speak? It sounds like something out of Star Trek or something.

I think by “culture” we mean different things. I’m talking about food, religion and dress, things you see in a country’s people that is uniquely theirs.
Governments come and go, but often the underlying culture remains.

You obviously hate heterosexuality and everything that includes, include children.
When you equated people voting with muslim terrorists, you validated any
misrepresentationinterpretation of your remarks that anyone else wants to make.malclave on January 16, 2009 at 4:24 PM
There are other matters involved in comparison. Subjective, inserting “sound mind” as insanity was not being argued in the thread.
Today’s contemporary morality is hardly as homosexually permeated as the culture of ancient Greece where it was the norm for a man to have a sexual relationship with a boy as well as with a wife. But the marriage was between one man and one woman in “civilized” cultures. Even Abraham had only one wife; her maid was his concubine. That she allowed Abraham sexual relations with her maid begat an enmity that remains to curse the earth today, as an aside comment. A concubine is not a wife. A wife has legal rights and legitimate status, particularly regarding offspring, that the concubine does not have. A concubine is merely “the other woman” that the man keeps for pleasure, but whose children are illegitimate, and lack legal standing regarding property rights, etc. In ancient Greece, the boy sufficed for the concubine substitute; the homosexual relationship prevented illegitimate pregnancies that a concubine would deliver.
Polygamy, imho, is a bastard’s excuse to abuse the rights of women. There is no legitimate place for polygamy in America. Democrats may not agree with that; but Republicans initially organized to refute the emotional heartbreaks and social injustices that polygamy and slavery produce. There were no Mormon Republicans when the GOP began. That Mormons chose (by federal force) to convert to monogamy and eventually to the GOP is noted along with their original conversion into communism and then back to capitalism.
History makes for such intrigue and suspense and drama. It’s a shame that those who produce movies promote their own agenda via tunnel vision.
maverick muse on January 16, 2009 at 4:25 PM
Noney, you like to trow out figures from time to time. Here are some Facts:
Massacusetts allows gay marriage. All other states specifically forbid it except for New York, which recognizes same-sex marriages performed elsewhere, and Rhode Island, where state law is silent on the subject.
Homosexuals constitute at most 5%, according to experts, of the population of America.
Recent surveys conducted show that 90 % of Americans believe in God.
These figures are easily found on the Internet.
kingsjester on January 16, 2009 at 4:26 PM
My heterosexual friends and the nieces and nephews I adore will be shocked to learn this.
Religious bigotry takes many forms, some more lethal than others, but hate is hate.
Noneya on January 16, 2009 at 4:27 PM
So she deserved to be attacked. It’s nice to know you feel that way. If that’s the case, then certainly you’ve thrown yourself into the fire, especially if we’re as bigoted as you say we are.
You have no right then to complain when someone hurls a gay slur at you.
And yet you’re discussing the past in regards to polygamy. You can’t have it both ways.
If you’re going to keep slandering me, it might help if you could prove I said something racist.
You on the other hand have decided that blacks cannot think for themselves and likened black Republicans to Jewish Nazis. As I said on the other thread, that’s the written equivalent of throwing Oreos at them, only it takes less courage.

When all you’ve got is a hammer …
TheUnrepentantGeek on January 16, 2009 at 4:43 PM
The gay marriage movement is not about rights, human rights, civil rights, etc.
Every single right that the law grants by marriage can be granted to “domestic partnerships” or “civil unions.” Every single, every single right the law gives spouses can be gained with a trip to legalzoom.
Why does it have to be called marriage? Find some church that has tossed the Bible out the door and get married! Call it whatever you want!
The gay marriage movement is about changing the definition of a word. It’s not about rights. Those can all be obtained without getting married in the eyes of the state.
The anti-prop 8 people posting here are caught up in the rhetoric. There is no benefit gained by the state recognizing marriage that can’t be obtained right now, today, through a myriad of other ways. You anti-prop 8 need to look deep into the gay marriage movement and what this is really about is not gay rights, it’s about denegrating and lessening the values that OTHER PEOPLE hold. It’s about making what the majority of Americans value as a sacred institution just a legal status.
But then that’s the liberal pattern isn’t it? I don’t pay my taxes and it’s called a crime. Geithner doesn’t pay his taxes and it’s called a “hiccup”. Changing definitions to fit your ideology seems to be rule, just like PETA trying to get fish called “Sea Kittens”.
Marriage wasn’t created by man. It exists in society through religion to be between one man and one woman. Even plural marriages are between the opposite sex.
Voting yes on Prop 8 doesn’t mean you hate homosexuals. It just means you want to keep the definition of ONE WORD. I know for a fact that you could get the California Legislature to pass all the laws you need to provide every protection to gay couples that married couples have.
PastorJon on January 16, 2009 at 4:44 PM

Limits are necessary for everything. This is something that liberals are unable to comprehend. The walls that confine you in your house serve to protect you. You look at the confinement when the reason for the walls is the protection. Heterosexual marriage is an institution that is built to protect society. It protects it from the dangers that are inherent in our biology, just as the walls of your house protect you from the dangers that are inherent in our physiology. The fact is that procreation is the most important aspect of the continuation of our species and the way that it is handled must be approached with the utmost of care. We are never more than one generation away from total extinction.
But instead of approaching the procreative situation with care, you trample all over it with stupidity, guilt, and raging self-hate. You never bother to consider any of the ancillary effects of the huge changes you propose in society, though you casually dismiss other changes which have already demonstrated themselves to have no negative impact on the procreative situation. In short, you have no logical arguments, just desires and tantrums.
I’m still waiting for you to answer my questions from the end of the last page. Take your time.

Gays need to ignore prop8 and get married anyway. Let us see the prosecutions. Let us see people behind bars. Let us make it quite clear that, in America, the morality of one group can subjugate and imprison another.
Times like these really reveal the religious subset that are nothing more than spiteful, vicious, fascistic thugs.
