Elite Hamas unit destroyed, Hamas “surprised” by IDF

posted at 1:50 pm on January 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The Admiral Emeritus defines disillusionment as watching your martial-arts instructor getting badly beaten in a bar fight.  This has to be close.  The mullahs in Tehran have reason to worry about their own security now that the IDF wiped out their Hamas commandos, apparently with no trouble whatsoever:

The so-called “Iranian Unit” of Hamas has been destroyed, according to Gaza sources cited Thursday by the Haaretz daily. The sources said most of the unit’s 100 members were killed in fighting in the Zeytun neighborhood of Gaza City.

The terrorists had been trained in infantry tactics, the use of anti-tank missiles and the detonation of explosives, among other skills, by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard at Hizbullah camps in Lebanon’s Beka’a Valley, as well as sites in Iran.

This comes as a severe blow to the prestige of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, as well as Hezbollah.  If their best can’t stand up for a week against the IDF, then their own enemies will look at their military as much less of a deterrent against action.  Since their nuclear program appears close to fruition, this is the wrong time to send that kind of message about Iranian capabilities.

Ha’aretz also reports that Hamas badly miscalculated the effect of their renewed missile attacks on Israel.  After watching the Olmert government in action in 2006 against Hezbollah and the political reaction to it, they assumed Israel would just return fire by air and cause “superficial” damage to their organization.  Surprise!

Two captured terrorists interviewed by Maariv/NRG say that Hamas was not expecting Israel’s response to the escalation in missile attacks on Israeli targets that preceded Operation Cast Lead. One of them, a 52-year-old victim of a premature detonation who had already done time in an Israeli jail, said, “Hamas took a gamble. We thought, at worst Israel will come and do something from the air – something superficial. They’ll come in and go out. We never thought that we would reach the point where fear will swallow the heart and the feet will want to flee. You [Israel] are fighting like you fought in ’48. What got into you all of a sudden?”

Really, what got into Israel was the narrowing options for dealing with Hamas.  They’ve tried just about everything, including cease-fires and the aforementioned air strikes, with no success.  Invasion and absolute confrontation was about all they had left short of complete surrender.  If Hamas leadership had paid attention, they might have realized this.

The Israelis are widely expected to bring the offensive to a halt in the next few days, but I’m not certain they will.  They’re starting to do tremendous damage to Hamas both in Gaza and worldwide.  They have restored the reputation for their military efforts that got damaged in 2006.  The IDF and Israeli government should consider completing the rout of Hamas rather than worry about timetables at this point.

Ed, remember that some of the Russian papers whined about the fall of Baghdad in 2003, over the fact that the US could accomplish such a feat not only so quickly, but also with surgical precision of a kind which the Russians could only dream. At the time, Russia was carpet-bombing Chechnya and getting nowhere.

I see that photo and think to myself… Murderers’ Row.

These men facilitate and abet terrorism through their proxy armies in Hamas and Hizbullah. They are learning that Israel’s restraint has limits, and that restraint better not be seen as weakness going forward. It’s a mistake that will cost them dearly.

For far too long the Islamists considered Israel’s restraint to be a sign of weakness. The Hizbullah war in 2006 and the way Israel fought that conflict showed that Israel’s political leaders put diplomacy ahead of victory and producing results that give way to peace. Hizbullah is in a stronger position now than they were in 2006 because Israel didn’t finish the job and UNIFIL has not lived up to its job of disarming the militias in Lebanon. Hizbullah coopted the Lebanese government.

Israel learned those bitter lessons and knows that it must do what must be done to destroy the terrorists operating against it. Hamas can’t be allowed to claim a victory (no matter how hollow). Reports claiming Hamas says that Israeli leaders have lost it by going after Hamas thugs is tantamount to Hamas recognizing that Israel has gotten its mojo back and has resecured its deterrence capabilities. Hamas can’t just sit back and lob rockets at Israel without wondering if Israel isn’t going to come with all the IDF.

Hamas will start thinking twice, even thought the Damascus Hamas are still pushing war and jihad. Meshaal has to answer to his masters in Tehran, and they can be none to pleased by the turn of events in Gaza. Sipping tea in Damascus is one thing, watching Hamas turned to humus is quite another.

I wonder if the Iranians use the same tactics as the Arabs.

One officer, who’s appointed because who his family knows, not what he knows or has done (sort of like our Congressmen, come to think of it).

And that one officer provides abysmal “leadership” to 100 privates, with no non-commissioned officer to be found.

If so, the Iranians will be just as easy to beat as their Arab cousins.

Hamas has offered to stop attacking Israel for one year if Israel will open its western Negev crossings to Gaza, Egyptian officials announced Thursday night. The group demands that Israel withdraw its troops from Gaza within one week and refrain from any and all operations in the area while the ceasefire lasts.

Also on Thursday night, Hamas’s Az a-Din el-Kuds Brigades, a branch of the Hamas armed forces, said they would take revenge for the death of Hamas minister Said Siyam. Siyam was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Thursday evening along with his brother, another senior Hamas leader.

An interesting choice to offer your adversary: hudna and revenge. The portly Israeli general with the bad hair has got to have a “would you please repeat that — we’re not sure we get the point” kind of expression on his face right now.

The culture of that region has a fixation with lost causes and martyrs. It might be more humiliating to Hamas for the IDF not to “complete the rout” but instead, leave what is left of Hamas to be humiliated by their own people in the next round of elections. In other words, allow the Palestinians to “complete the rout” themselves.

Imagine you have someone who appears to stand up to someone of overwhelming power and that power comes in and absolutely smashes them and they are dead. That person or entity can become legendary for their “brave” standing up to power.

Now imagine that the “overwhelming power” simply walks over, yanks down the taunter’s trousers (being “pantsed”), flicks him on the forehead, punches him in the eye, knocks down his house, kills his brother, and stands there and says “now knock it off!” and walks away.

There would potentially be more of a psychological advantage to leaving Hamas there to be abandoned by the people rather than to utterly destroy it. But it is risky either way you play it. If Israel destroys Hamas in Gaza, there is still Hamas in the West Bank and in Syria that can reconstitute a Gaza organization. An organization that is humiliated by its own people is much harder to reconstitute.

I remember reading an article on one of the milblogs or strategypage that went into great detail about why free nations will always field better militaries than repressive ones. The gist of that argument included the following points:

* Enlisted personnel from free nations are more efficient because they do not feel forced to fight; therefore they add the strength of their will, effort, and mind to fighting the battle;

* Officers from free nations are allowed to contribute significantly towards planning and executing military strategy and doctrine (compare and contrast this latitude of decision-making in a free country to, say, a commander’s role in either Soviet Russia or Nazi Germany; neither regime allowed hardly anything in the way of dissenting opinions or choices from its flag or theater officers);

* Specialists from free nations (e.g., pilots, doctors, special forces) are allowed to train much more extensively than their counterparts from repressive regimes. Pilots are the most obvious example: a pilot from China is barely allowed to train because of the cost of training and the possibility that he might fly away and defect.

Although overall the US military is the most efficient on the planet, I have a feeling that Mossad could give some guys in SOCOM a run for their money. Comes from being under the gun every single day of your life, I guess.

Kinda like Spongebob and Patrick did, after the gas station attendants said they wouldn’t last ten seconds across the county line, and their car was stolen in twelve seconds.

The only way to win there is to kill the man after you have pantsed him. And if any of his friends b*tch about it, you kill them too.

Otherwise even *they* will claim “victory” when you walk away.

I can’t imagine that anyone in Israel will be sorry to see Condi’s back as she slams the door on her way out. Too bad she can’t take Livni with her.

She was instrumental in Hamas being on the ballot in the last PA elections, in Israel’s turning over the Philadelphi corridor to the PA when Israel withdrew from Gaza, and then of course there is the disastrous UN resolution that left Hizbullah fully able to rearm over the Syrian border after 2006.

I wonder if she isn’t a closet fan of Rev. Wright, because she sure does seem to have a serious hate on for Israel. And she sure can’t tell a terrorist from her ass. Pardon my French but she pisses me off.

ProfessorMiao on January 16, 2009 at 2:32 PM

Key here is that Israel has come to the correct conclusion that the world will not help them, they have to help themselves.

They no longer trust American politicians to stay the course… as Obama was elected… and no longer have faith in the American people, as they elected Bambi.

Face it, Israel has bowed to world pressure on this for years. The UN and US constantly say we will give you Peace through negotiations, and will protect you… and then fail to do so.

And, they look at the worlds reaction to Iran’s nuc program as well… seeing that the world governments are pretty toothless, and so split by politics that they can’t enforce even simple non proliferation treaties (as China and Russia both continue to help Iran arm…).

So, since no one is willing to help, or it seems, do they need to worry about world opinion… heck… time to take the gloves off.

“You [Israel] are fighting like you fought in ‘48. What got into you all of a sudden?”

Because in ’48, its very existence depended on the fierceness of its fighters. As it did in ’67 and ’73. This was lost until the Lebanon War, the Iranian rhetoric and the possibility of an Iranian Bomb.

Israelis fight to win and to preserve as many of their soldiers’ lives as possible, if only because a soldier is a valuable asset. The Arabs use their fighters as cannon fodder, and even that runs out eventually.

I think Hillary may be tougher on the Palestinians than Condi, at least for now, because she has tried to move away from the Arafat smooch-fest. She needs US Jewish votes for her next try at national office (VP 2012? POTUS 2016?), and leaning on Israel to endanger it security wouldn’t help.

I hope the Israeli cabinet votes to tell Condi to go brush up on her NFL statistics. Or at least to pound sand. What could she do in response in her last 72 hours in office, anyway?

Key here is that Israel has come to the correct conclusion that the world will not help them, they have to help themselves.

They no longer trust American politicians to stay the course… as Obama was elected… and no longer have faith in the American people, as they elected Bambi.

Face it, Israel has bowed to world pressure on this for years. The UN and US constantly say we will give you Peace through negotiations, and will protect you… and then fail to do so.

And, they look at the worlds reaction to Iran’s nuclear program as well… seeing that the world governments are pretty toothless, and so split by politics that they can’t enforce even simple non proliferation treaties (as China and Russia both continue to help Iran arm…).

So, since no one is willing to help, or it seems, do they need to worry about world opinion… heck… time to take the gloves off.

Well said. Sometimes you just have to kick the bully so hard that he decides he doesn’t want to be a bully any more, and then you can be friends.

Pretty good result when right works with might. Something the US has gotten tied up in knots about too. Although I suppose it’s all moot now for us.

Yes! Victory is at hand!

Noneya on January 16, 2009 at 3:46 PM

I disagree.

Following on with your analogy, pantsed kid screams “see, I win!” as you walk away, and everyone around him says, “Yeah!”

Yeah, as I said, it is risky either way you play it. But I believe the people of Gaza have just about had a belly full of Hamas. I honestly believe that the Iranian influence in the region is on the wane and Iran’s proxies are now losing favor among the people as causing nothing but more death, destruction, and despair. Sort of the same lesson the Iraqis learned about AQI.

As one person in the news put it the other day, the Palestinians have to ask themselves “are you about building Gaza or are you about destroying Israel?”. As standards of living improve in the West Bank relative to Gaza, it isn’t going to take much longer for people to come to some final decision.

Just like sex with a skunk, sometime you’re gonna get tired of that ole stink’n stuff.

Too bad htom, that we don’t remember how well it worked last time we tried it.

Trust me the Japanese were so mightily educated by Hiroshima and Nagasaki that THEY will certainly never play bully-man again.

Funny thing really is … maybe the one person who got the whole Israel situation right was Osama bin Laden about 10 years ago.

He basically said that the Jews were fools for not removing every last Moslem when they first set up Israel (leave or die punctuated by bullets!) – and carried that logic on after 1967 throughout the rest of the newly taken territories.

The daily spectacle promoted by the (Western Anti-Semitic commie and Nationalist Arabic government) media showing “Palestinian” suffering has been the greatest recruiting tool the Islamists have had against the West. If the Jews had just removed or killed every last Moslem in their midst and built a new land to keep them out forever, the Arabs would have long ago made peace with the strength and wealth of Israel.

Cabinet to decide on unilateral ceasefire Saturday evening
Headline from Jerusalem Post. Looks like Condi Rice may have talked Livni into snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Again. Sigh.

The Israelis are widely expected to bring the offensive to a halt in the next few days, but I’m not certain they will.

If they’re smart they certainly won’t. Rahm Emanuel or no, they shouldn’t expect much political support from America in the future. They have four days (counting today) plus however many it takes Obama/Clinton to get their feet under them to keep grinding meat, and the harder they’re pushing the longer it’ll take for the Democrat/Socialists to stop them. Once the Dems get their diplomatic hooks in, every effort will be made to put the shackles of “process” back around Israel’s feet. If the Israelis can make it such that few or no Hamas are left either motivated or alive to wield influence in the ensuing “dialogues,” by far the better for them (not to mention the human species).

If you want to go back to the days of Mamluks or Saladin, though, they genuinely were. But they haven’t put in much of a showing the past century. Technology, tactics and strategy have become progressively more significant than religious fervor.

Blacklake on January 16, 2009 at 4:25 PM

If the Israelis are smart they will answer Condi with a rude hand gesture and continue to smear HAMAS all over the landscape along with their allies the Iranians and the UN.

Thank you God, not for helping jews, but as usual, rewarding right. I hope one day some peaceful Palestinians take over and their lives improve greatly.
