Change you can drink?

posted at 12:32 pm on January 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

I’ve enjoyed Jones Sodas for a few years, at least the diet Jones, which gets served at Panera. This much sugar, I’m not sure even non-diabetics can endure. Jones becomes the latest company to cash in on Hope and Change, amplifying the weird hero-worship we saw during the presidential campaign to new heights — or new lows, depending on your view:

Jones Soda loves to release special flavors — and sometimes, they’re not so tasty. (Remember when I tried ham soda, Christmas tree soda and other holiday varieties? Blech.)

However, in honor of our new president, the company has released Orange (You Glad for Change) Cola. The beverage “has a light citrus flavor that makes this cola one of a kind.” The bottles also feature President Obama’s photo.

That may have Pepsi seeing Mountain Dew Red, since they’re sponsoring a big inaugural ball for Obama.  They’ve also sent their CEO, Indra Nooyi, to an Obama dinner this week that focused on foreign policy, presumably to discuss trade issues.  Perhaps readers might remember Nooyi best for her 2005 speech to Columbia University in which she referred to the United States as a “middle finger” to the rest of the world:

However, if used inappropriately — just like the U.S. itself — the middle finger can convey a negative message and get us in trouble. You know what I’m talking about. In fact, I suspect you’re hoping that I’ll demonstrate what I mean. And trust me, I’m not looking for volunteers to model.

Discretion being the better part of valor…I think I’ll pass.

What is most crucial to my analogy of the five fingers as the five major continents, is that each of us in the U.S. — the long middle finger — must be careful that when we extend our arm in either a business or political sense, we take pains to assure we are giving a hand…not the finger. Sometimes this is very difficult. Because the U.S. — the middle finger — sticks out so much, we can send the wrong message unintentionally.

Unfortunately, I think this is how the rest of the world looks at the U.S. right now. Not as part of the hand — giving strength and purpose to the rest of the fingers — but, instead, scratching our nose and sending a far different signal.

Sounds like she’d fit right in with Obama’s foreign-policy team, especially with Susan Rice, Samantha Power, and Robert Malley when he eventually returns.

At least Jones has made this relatively accessible for the little people.  They’re only charging $15 for a six-pack of the Orange You Glad For Change Cola, or $24 for a cost-saving twelve-pack.  However, this looks like a great candidate for enterprising Photoshoppers, especially to replace the “Pure Cane Soda” tagline above the adoring picture of Barack Obama.  That’ll be more fun than spending $2.50 a bottle for the soda itself, and a lot less expensive fun at that.

Update:  Here’s the first Photoshop, courtesy of HA reader Landshark:

I’m actually a little surprised they didn’t go the “grapeful” route in the first place.  Excellent work, Landshark!

Just observing that your McCain love song seems to have only one note.

The election is over. He lost. I voted for him, reluctanctly.

My advice? Let’s move one to other topics. This one (McCain) is done. FWIW.

Okay. And I have read that you voted in the primary for someone else. I’ve also read you on other threads, often talking about how others were slamming McCain, and you’re responding to them. However, I didn’t notice much McCain bashing on this thread about Obama. Yet you felt a need to make comments about McCain, and thought “hmmm. Wonder what that’s all about?”

wise_man on January 16, 2009 at 2:06 PM

Well, lets see. You are trying to convince everyone that you are not a McCain hack, when everyone can check out your numerous attacks on those that had the audacity to question the maverick’s disasterous campaign, his unwillingness to go after his friends, the democrats, his muzzling of the true conservative of the ticket……let’s see, have I missed anything. Oh yeah, if anyone dared to question mccain at all, you accused us of being Obama supporters….look we get it, 2 choices. We understand that. I voted for Palin, with the maverick at 72, and we lost.
We don’t want to make the same mistake, ie, sending out a democrat to do a conservative’s job.
You seem to want to keep throwing the whole “you didn’t like mccain” mantra in our faces. Get over it.

Looking forward to your response.

wise_man on January 16, 2009 at 2:21 PM

Well, lets see. You are trying to convince everyone that you are not a McCain hack, when everyone can check out your numerous attacks on those that had the audacity to question the maverick’s disasterous campaign,

Yeah, you’ve got that wrong.

I have said on multiple occasions that it would be ” disasterous ” if Obama would win, and there was only one course of action to make this a reality. And what that did not involve, was harping on the single issue of amnesty and attempting to convince people here on a daily basis to instead vote for Bob Barr, or write in Michelle’s name, or stay home and wish for a Jimmy Carter so as we can get a Ronald Reagan, as others have been on record saying,

But nice try to re-write the history of what’s been going on here, and how my attempts (with many others here that you don’t seem to have any problem with, but me) to encourage people her to be part of the solution, and not part of the problem.

wise_man on January 16, 2009 at 2:25 PM

MadisonConservative on January 16, 2009 at 2:26 PM

wise_man on January 16, 2009 at 2:27 PM

Cola is awful for your health: empty calories with the potential to cause diabetes, if you drink the stuff with sugar, or if you drink diet, aspartame is dangerous to some people with some conditions. And all cola contains phosphoric acid which is bad for your teeth and bones as it contributes to osteoporosis.
If cola companies want to support the Messiah, now is an excellent time to switch to tea!

thuja on January 16, 2009 at 2:27 PM

And your teeth will rot from drinking that much sugar, V boy.

I’m tired of your whining about how we conservatives blew it this year. We did blow it, by putting out a democrat for our candidate. But, I did vote for Palin and those that sat out will have to sqaure that with having an Obama presidency.
You have a right to defend the maverick, but I have the right to tell you that the maverick, though a war hero, needs to hang up the chaps and settle down with Lindsay….

HornetSting on January 16, 2009 at 2:30 PM

I couldn’t agree more. We ate our children and ourselves, fighting during the primaries. If it was Romney, we fought, and were belittled. If it was Fred we fought, and were belittled. Then all of a sudden it was the what I called “spent” McCain. Ms. Sparkle lectured us all, over and over and over. At that point we had two choices, a horrible one and a not-so-horrible one.

Like I said, and will say again, every (free) populace deserves its leaders. Apathy, you are my friend now.

wise_man, if you are wise, you internalize this and say your piece, without jumping in anyone’s eyes. If they feel hurt, let them be. We all know who we are. I can never expect the libs to be sane, because they are psychologically disturbed. There are, however, quite a few on the other side of the divide who deserve the Obama aftermath, fully. May we all be farked royally, especially in the wallets. Ronald Reagan weaps from his grave. We are ossified and we deserve to spinter even further.

Now, do the Peggy Noonan thing, “diable disbelief” and party. Happy days are here, again.

Entelechy on January 16, 2009 at 3:55 PM

Well “we deserve to splinter”…further…

Entelechy on January 16, 2009 at 3:58 PM

E, put on the thinking hat and think

Now, do the Peggy Noonan thing, “disable disbelief” and party. Happy days are here, again.

Entelechy on January 16, 2009 at 3:59 PM

Happy days will be here again, when we can get a conservative in the whitehouse. Hopefully, next time this other person who wins the republican primary won’t have to battle both the left, AND the right in their effort to get elected.

Other than my one vote, and my one voice, I can only wish this to be. I can’t make it happen all on my own. I can also wish that so many of my brothers and sisters here will do their part as well, and not spend the time before the election being part of the problem, as they seek to trash the next GOP candidate for some other single issue that is more important to them then the presidency itself.

It’s just sad. Well, it would be funny, if it wasn’t so un-funny – so seem these same people who participated in this mess that we are now in – complaining about this mess that we now face. Like I said, sad.

wise_man on January 16, 2009 at 4:02 PM

What sad is that those of us who voted for McCain are still being told we “got what we wanted”, and are blamed for the Obama victory, by those who hide behind implication because they’re too cowardly to say what they mean. I don’t know about others, but being chided and called a traitor if I didn’t vote for a candidate, derided for expressing the multiple problems I had with his multiple liberal positions, and finally after voting for the guy, are still blamed anyway for the crappy candidate’s loss that he brought upon himself by bungling a critical crisis, just makes me a little raw.

What possesses companies to tie their wagons to divisive things like politics?

What’s next, “Bill Ayers Nail-Bomb-Flavored Soda?” A limited-edition 4th of July Pepsi can that says “I say God Damn America!” when you pop the top?

Maybe Obama can do a series of ads for Coca Cola playing off the original Cocaine-powered Colas and his “youthful indiscretions”.

Some people are comparing the raving insanity of BDS to Obama-Cultism as if they were different – as far as I can tell, it’s the same thing.
