Camp Pendleton the new Gitmo?
posted at 6:15 pm on January 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The good news for Californians? Barack Obama may have a great new public-works project to help stimulate their bankrupt government and moribund economy. The bad news? They get to keep the world’s worst terrorists right by a big terrorist target:
The U.S. military has prepared a list of U.S. military bases that could be used to house as many as 250 detainees currently being held at the U.S. Naval base in Guantanamo Bay, military officials tell ABCNews.com.
The list — which includes Camp Pendleton in California, Fort Leavenworth in Kansas; the Marine Air Station in Miramar, California; and the U.S. Naval Consolidated Brig in South Carolina — has been circulated in a classified brief to members of Congress and was prepared by the Pentagon’s Joint Staff. …
The preliminary list was based on cost, logistic, and security concerns, but the Department of Defense is expected to present a more comprehensive recommendation based on a variety of factors, according a military official.
Camp Pendleton was determined to be the least expensive option and officials say its vast 125,000 acre size would allow for a new prison to be built in an isolated and secure area.
And Nevadans thought the Yucca Mountain nuclear storage project was a bad deal. San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station isn’t just near Camp Pendleton. It’s surrounded by Camp Pendleton. The nuclear power plant would make an excellent target for terrorists looking to create a disaster in response to the detention of their comrades on the military base.
That’s not the only stupid notion in this plan. An interstate freeway runs all the way through Pendleton as well, Interstate 5, which goes from Mexico to Canada. If any of the terrorists manage to escape Gitmo, they have nothing but water for a destination. If they escape a detention facility in Pendleton, they would have access to the Eisenhower federal highway system.
Small wonder Barack Obama warned that it might take years to close Gitmo. If this is the best choice for an alternate, let’s keep Gitmo open instead. After all, with all of the Hope and Change taking place next week, why do we need to close Gitmo anyway?

Hey, lets not be too hasty about sending any more problems to California…some of us have to live here! My house is backed up to Camp Pendleton. Most the little towns around here are great people, very supportive of our military, etc. Besides the problems with illegal aliens, liberal schools, etc. things are beautiful!

You live in RSC?

Well we don’t want to spend too much money moving them around. Let’s send them somewhere they would be comfortable.
Key West. Liberal and gays, or liberal gays, I’m sure they would welcome fellow victims of the conservative hegemony.

My vote goes to Alcatraz.

“I mean really? Miramar? Just because they’ve got so much land around the base that they use a good percentage of it as a garbage dump,”
The Landfill/ dump just south of Miramar is a City Dump.
It doesn’t belong to the military.

Stupid, yes, but the delicious irony of putting the buggers in California could only be heightened if they built the new prison right next to Code Pink HQ.

Implant them with position-locator chips, dump them into Gaza, and let the IDF use them for target practice.
For corn’s sakes, there is nothing wrong with Club Gitmo as a detention facility. We have allowed the media narrative to demonize the place, and every opportunist politician has latched on to a meaningless issue.

Why not just release them onto the grounds of the Capitol and the White House? Those places are already full of anti-American criminals working to destroy the nation, so what difference would a few more make?
AZCoyote on January 17, 2009 at 7:32 AM
I strongly support the locator chip idea above. Put one on Sean Penn and Michael Moore too, and send them in to make a fake documentary……….

I think we can all agree that, wherever they go, it has to be a blue state.
Libs must be forced to eat their own dog food.

I live in North SD county in a little town called Bonsall. We are right under the helicopter path from Pendleton. It was the marines who guarded our homes when we evacuated for the fires a year ago. We love our military here.

I live in San Diego and the thought of Terrorist Scum being dumped in my back yard pisses me off to no end. If they must be sent to California I think Berkeley or some other place in the Bay Area would be a much better place.

I second the Berkeley idea It kind of just seems right.

A brief tour through the stench at DKos reveals a growing concensus that torture is indeed an act which the US should not engage in, unless Obama thinks it’s okay.
However, the foundation of the liberal position of torture has not changed, being that torture is Bush’s fault, even if Obama approves of it.

But wait a second
After all
According to ALL the liberals
According to ALL the ACLU laywers

This just does not matter. Once on US soil, these poor detainees will immediatly be released anyway.

“Interstate 15 is not far to the East of Pendleton. And Mexico, with George Bush’s heavily protected secure border is maybe 45 minutes away by freeway.”
To look at another way, If we keep em at Camp Pendleton and they somehow managed to escape the local population would be on the look out to re-catch em.
The military IS really supported down here.
If we put them up in the Bay Area and they managed to escape, the local population would be helping them get away.

The Gitmo prisoners should be transported to a location halfway between Gitmo and Bermuda, and dropped off…
gridlock2 on January 19, 2009 at 8:51 AM
I think an “accident in transit” is the way to go, but there are other equally good plans out there.
They just all disappear and who would really care?
A. C-130 crash (crew bails out early)
B. Transport ship springs a leak (radio doesn’t work)
C. FedEx re-routes their cargo container to Siberia
Alternate Plans
A. Accidentally frozen in Carbonite
B. Unwilling participants in new Mars Mission
C. Buried in Yucca Mountain Repository
