California goes bust: Tax refunds to be delayed
posted at 4:40 pm on January 16, 2009 by Allahpundit
Not just refunds, either. Welfare checks and student grants will be held back, too. Let it be a lesson to those of us who pay estimated tax, me most of all: In these trying times, don’t overpay.
Instead, ask yourself, “What would Tim Geithner do?”
The controller said the suspended payments could be rolled into IOUs if California still lacked sufficient cash to pay its bills come March or April.
“I take this action with great reluctance,” Chiang said at a news conference in his office. But he said that without action to close the deficit, “there is no way to make it through February unscathed.”
There’s a hitch with the IOUs, though:
In 1992, banks honored the state’s IOUs, cashing them on demand, and then receiving an additional 5% from the state when it made good on the obligations. In effect, the IOUs served the state as unsecured bridge loans from banks. But this time around, with credit tight and banks still feeling the impact of the fall meltdown in the financial services industry, it is not yet clear how banks will respond.
“Nobody’s making any decision whether ‘Bank X’ will take the IOUs as money or not,” said Brian Tobin, a Culver City based tax preparer.
I hereby formally open the pool on guessing which date California will be bailed out. I’ll take February 28. Exit question: Where’s the recall petition for Arnold?

More failure from the liberals whose foreign and domestic policy work so well in the classroom and coffee shops but fail miserably in real life.
Just add NY,Detroit,Clevland,DC, to name a few that are run by the “smart ones” which are bankrupt, failing schools, and high crime rates.
But to be a liberal, all that matters is that you speak well
and tell everybody how smart you are.
Results are just a “distraction”.
We are going to have the next 4 years of nothing but “style over substance”
California and many Northern states have been seeing a mass exodus for years.
I live in NC and have seen an incredible increase of New Yorkers coming here to live because they can’t afford to live up North anymore.
I tell them to please not vote in the idiots here that ruined your state up there.
Unfortunately most are union loyalist.
This is a good example of what kind of failed leadership the “smart ones” bring to the table:

If CA were a person, it would be Dolly Parton, with Arnold and Pelosi being the big boobs up on the topside. LA would be where the enema tube goes, and San Diego, being still somewhat conservative, would be the clipped toenails.

I grew up in CA and moved back here from VA/DC 3 years ago with my family. I love the weather, close proximity to beaches and all the comforts. Yes, the state is a basket case, but my local schools are great (much better than NOVA) and I’m enjoying 76 degree weather right now. Most of the people who left CA (like me and many of my friends) eventually return if they can.

Arnold is the ultimate RINO, yet he is constrained by the biggest bunch of liberal idiots in the state legislature, so I cut him a little slack. He attempted to break the unions absolute hold on protecting mediocrity and has since surrendered to them.

Theworldisnotenough on January 16, 2009 at 6:34 PM
It’s just as nice over here in Santa Cruz, too.
Arnold is not really the problem. With a liberal majority in the state legislature and the constant willingness of the voters to obligate the state to indebtedness via bond issues wrapped in propositions there’s very little he can do. A few years ago, when he did try to reform some of the spending, the teachers union spent a stunning anount of money on an ad campaign demonizing him. For months you couldn’t turn on a TV or radio without hearing an ad about what a bastard he was every 15 minutes. He finally caved in time to get re-elected.
The unions control this state. They control the democratic party. They own, or outright cow, the politicians. Until you can break them nothing here will change.

You have to realize that there are two different Californias. You’d probably like to have a great many of the people who live here. They are hard-working, conservative, decent people. They’d be an asset to wherever you happen to be. They’re just outvoted by highly organized and motivated loons. The loons understand political power far better than we do. They work very, very hard to get power. They don’t give it up after they get it. They only increase their power when they get it. They pass it along to hand-picked successors when they move upward to another position of power. They create networks of non-profit organizations, non-governmental organizations and public sector unions to maintain and fund their power. They look down on you with a disdain you do not fully understand.
More and more, I have come to the realization that this will all end badly.

So I left that for what is now 30 degrees, but it will warm up. In the small lake in my back yard I have over 60 geese, several swans, several types of ducks (the lake has over 10 miles of shore that winds through the development). Rabbits, foxes, I have to protect my garden from the deer. When spring comes the trees are green and lush and we have an autumn…the beaches are much nice then any in So. Cal., and I have been to them all. Water rises to 80 degrees, cal water sits in the 60′s.

Its insanity on a stick and the liberals still are not willing to cut waste or killer programs.
Before, the deficit was about 11 billion, just about what illegal aliens cost the state (each year), some law enforcement versus a criminal support state and Ca. wouldn’t have zoomed to a 42 billion dollar deficit.

Also, if left to their own devices, as the Constitutional says they should, the people of that state would reach a boiling point and vote the incompetents out of office. Upinak — OK is very much in the black. However, they do have a state income tax which is very low and just became lower. Their surplus is kept in a “rainy day fund” which is a device we use to torture the liberals who want to spend it but can’t with an R senate. Ad Valorums are low along with personal property taxes. (Of course, in OK there are innumerable people who rightfully claim these taxes are too high, but they are lower than most other states) The car tags have had the advalorem removed and cost about $35. Our through-state routes are 75 mph turnpikes so you can pay for those roads as you use them. Got high sales taxes though. And, a house that costs $0.5M in blue USA will only cost about $150K in Oklahoma.

I will see if my connection at API can arrange a connection. She is their communications director so it shouldn’t be to hard. We swap almost daily emails discussing energy issues and I have been on a few blogger conference calls with them.

Good People, but remember something about them. It is a club… even if they don’t admit it.

What makes you think the Federal system is any more safe than CA? The feds make all employees withhold, and then repay them without interest a year later. The federal government is now essentially broke, its obligations exceeding the value of our combined assets. So, about those 2008 or 2009 Federal tax refund checks, don’t count on them until they are delivered, deposited and cleared.
Who bails out Uncle SAm? first, you. then????
