So, if someone threw a grenade at you, which HotAir commenter would you pick up and use as a human shield?

Blake on January 15, 2009 at 6:10 PM

It is possible to be right near a grenade and only get stunned if you have something to absorb the force. When we looked at bunkers that you can build during basic training, there were blast holes on both ends that were barely 3 feet deep and were supposed to save your life, so this IDF officer may be real in his heroics.

Note: YOu can clearly see at the video that the narrator is wrong – the Terrorist didn’t throw the grenade, he was preparing to throw it when the officer noticed it and made the incredibly fast sprint, grabbed him, made him drop the grenade and then turned him over to shield himself from the blast.

Aristotle on January 15, 2009 at 6:16 PM

What’s amazing is the range at which this all takes place- it looks like they’re all of ten yards away from each other. Good thing the Hamasholes can’t shoot worth a damn. Or cookoff a grenade.

Amazing presence of mind for the Israeli soldier to be able to react so fast. Kind of like laying on a grenade to save your buddy, except volunteering the enemy to jump on it instead.

Captain Nitai Okashi

“When the gunman pulled the pin out of the grenade, I understood that it was either him or me. I turned him around so that the shrapnel form the grenade would hit him,” captain Okashi reconstructed the defining moments. “What went through my mind? I didn’t think about whether I would die at that moment, I thought about my soldiers. I felt that I my finger was hit, but I did not think about feeling self-pity, I put what my commanders taught me into action- I refused to give up.”

ScottMcC on January 15, 2009 at 7:43 PM

Did he get banned? I was starting to warm up to him a bit, after he converted to Orthodoxy.

Yep, the AP and the EdM banned him after he kept posting crap on Israeli blog articles.

For example: on this one, he’d probably write about how Israelis stone Christians when they are praying and preaching in Israel, then about a law in Israel banning conversions to Christianity, then about how Israel stole Palestinian land and how the Israelis should just give up the land and walk away because they are terrible people.

Anywho, he was amusing, but repetitive.

So, if someone threw a grenade at you, which HotAir commenter would you pick up and use as a human shield?

Can I use someone here who I think is smarter than me as a human shield against these alleged grenades? Because then I chose all of you!!! And what a glorious shield o’ people I’d have!!!

:)

mjk on January 15, 2009 at 7:43 PM

This makes no sense. Why would anyone run toward a man with a grenade? Wasn’t the soldier already safe from the grenade BEFORE he run TO it? And why use a body to shield one from a blast when blasts have a tendency to go through bodies especially blasts that could have been avoided altogether by staying away? And finally, considering the soldier had a gun, why use his feet to traverse the distance between him and the hamas dude when he could have let his bullets do the walking. Isn’t that that the advantage to firearms – to kill somebody at arm’s length so you don’t actually have to run over to them to do it?

keep the change on January 15, 2009 at 7:46 PM

There are rules in this world .You don,t spit into the wind, you don,t pull on supermans cape and you damm sure don,t throw a grenade at the IDF.

This makes no sense. Why would anyone run toward a man with a grenade? Wasn’t the soldier already safe from the grenade BEFORE he run TO it?
keep the change on January 15, 2009 at 7:46 PM

Umm… huh?

How was he safe from the grendade? He was out in the open and very close; a grenade can cause severe injury or death up to 30 yards away.

As to shooting him- unlike the movies, unless someone is shot in the head, they don’t immediately fall over dead. Once the pin is pulled that grenade is going to go off whether the man who threw it has since died or not.

He managed to kill the terrorist while also protecting himself from the grenade; how there could be a better outcome I don’t know.

Hollowpoint on January 15, 2009 at 8:04 PM

Wow that made my entire week. =)

Summer on January 15, 2009 at 8:07 PM

Who is the person who moves toward the grenade after the IDF guy who ran over and grabbed the grenade thrower. A coupled seconds after he grabs the guy, someone else is moving in the same general direction–right into the explosion of the grenade. Who is that second guy?

smellthecoffee on January 15, 2009 at 8:09 PM

Orin Hatch likes that guy’s balls.

BadgerHawk on January 15, 2009 at 8:09 PM

smellthecoffee on January 15, 2009 at 8:09 PM

The second guy is the other IDF agent. From the proximity it looks like he should have been hurt, but I guess he got lucky.

And for keepthechange, the terrorist never actually got to throw the second grenade. He was pulling the pin, and I suppose the IDF agent didn’t have a clear shot so he rushed him. The terrorist ended up dropping the grenade in the process, which is why it was so close to them when it detonated. I was wondering the same thing myself when I first saw the video.

BadgerHawk on January 15, 2009 at 8:12 PM

BadgerHawk on January 15, 2009 at 8:12 PM

Maybe there was something in the way IDF #1 “arranged” the terrorist that he absorbed most of the grenage. Maybe he lifted him up and dropped him on top of it?

smellthecoffee on January 15, 2009 at 8:15 PM

There was a strikingly similar story in Iraq, wish I could find the clip…

Imagine the situation. You are 10 feet away from a guy who has a grenade in his hand and is about to pull the pin out and throw it at you.

Do you have a time to point your weapon and shoot enough rounds to stop him before he throws the grenade? No. You can eather run aside and fall to the ground (that’s what standard military training says you should so) or you do the wild stunt this officer did – making him NOT throw the grenade because you are too close, and if he pulls the pin out before you can get to him – use him as a shield.

Also, nobody gets killed by the grenade’s BLAST. Grenades kill using FRAGMENTS, which is why they are called fragmentation grenades. This is why taking any kind of cover will protect you more than just being away from the blast, while being exposed to grenade fragments.

Aristotle on January 15, 2009 at 8:21 PM

I think there’s a 2007 date on the bottom of the clip…

OMG, now those evil Jews are using innocent civilian-terrorists as human shields! This calls for another unanimous UN resolution against Israel for the use of illegal and inhumane tactics that go against the Geneva Conventions of politically correct warfare. :D Rock on IDF!

A great little article linked from Atlas Shrugs:

Why we choose us

When rockets fall on Israeli towns, the press doesn’t run over to describe the carnage in loving detail or splatter photographs of gore across the evening news. The International Red Cross makes no condemnations, the UN has nothing to say, and the usual suspects who cry out against war crimes when we defend ourselves– are silent as stones.

That is why we choose us. Because no one else will. The lesson we have learned is that if we do not care for our children, no one else will. If we do not protect them, no one else will lift a hand to do it for us.

The grandfathers and fathers of the “People of Gaza” twice invaded us together with the armies of several Arab nations to wipe us off the face of the earth. They failed. Today their children are trying to help Iran finish the job they started. The world once again chooses them. The world wails over their suffering. The world demands that we let our children die, so that theirs may live to kills us. We refuse. We choose us.

It is the right of every nation to defend itself against enemies at home and abroad. That right of self-defense will not be abridged because the left has decided that Israel has less right to exist than an Iranian backed theocracy that just brought back crucifixion. When Al Queda attacked America, the left chose the Taliban. When Hamas bombed Israel, the left chose Hamas. So be it. We are under no obligation to bow our heads to the moral judgment of the ideological grandchildren of Marx, Lenin and Noam Chomsky. To hell with them and to hell with all their progeny. We choose us….
