UNRWA school in Gaza employed terrorists

As if we didn’t know this already, but as Joel Mowbray reports for Fox News, the UN admits it, and has since 2004. The UNRWA school hit by Israeli fire during the current conflict with Hamas employed known Hamas terrorists. It also has used textbooks that teach anti-Semitism and radical Palestinian propaganda — and Congress wants to investigate the UN for all of the above:
The United Nations agency that administers a school in Gaza where dozens of civilians were killed by Israeli mortar fire last week has admitted to employing terrorists to work at its Palestinian schools in the past, has no system in place to keep members of Hamas or Islamic Jihad off its payroll, and provides textbooks to children that contain hate speech and other incendiary information.
A growing chorus of critics has taken aim at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in recent years, although momentum on Capitol Hill has been slow. But last week’s incident, which Israel maintains was prompted by Hamas operatives firing mortars at Israelis from a location near the school, has prompted some lawmakers to scrutinize the U.N. agency.
Rep. Steve Rothman, D-N.J., introduced a resolution in the fall calling for greater transparency and accountability at UNRWA. The bill called on the agency to make its textbooks available on the Internet for public inspection and to implement “terrorist name recognition software and other screening procedures that would help to ensure that UNRWA staff, volunteers, and beneficiaries are neither terrorists themselves, nor affiliated with known terrorist organizations.”
Rothman said he plans to re-introduce his UNRWA resolution in the coming weeks because, “as timely as this bill was before, it is even more timely now. It is urgent that Congress can be assured that U.S. taxpayer money is not being spent to support Hamas and its murderous activities.”
Oh, come on. Let’s not overreact. Maybe if we all plant organic gardens, the UN will magically cleanse itself of its terrorist connections.
Seriously, though, the UN has spent the last few decades sucking up to the worst elements. The nonsense at the Human Rights Council should have made this clear, even if Oil-for-Food and the peacekeeping forces scandals didn’t. The entire organization does little but support tyrannies and anti-Semitism. After years of watching their human-rights organs (comprising the world’s worst human-rights abusers) ignore Palestinian terrorism while obsessing over every move that Israel makes, why should we profess even the mildest shock that the UN flat-out teaches anti-Semitism and harbors terrorists within its schools?
The UN stopped being a solution decades ago, and can’t even qualify as a benign non-entity any longer. It’s become part of the problem. Barack Obama and his team of internationalists won’t do it, but the US needs to re-evaluate its entire relationship with Turtle Bay. And our first action in that re-evaluation should be the complete halt of all monies to the UN.

UN out of the USA….

That’s just UNbelievable.

I like Neal Boortz’ idea of moving the U.N. to Haiti. The Haitians would benefit ecomomically. The U.S. would benefit by not spending anymore money on this anti-American entity. The U.N. is a joke that is far from funny. It needs to leave the U.S.,……like yesterday.
adamsmith on January 15, 2009 at 8:52 AM
BRAVO, ED !!!
That’s exactly right. In recent decades, the UN has moved from being a benign entity to being a growing part of the problem.
petefrt on January 15, 2009 at 9:00 AM
Opps. That UN again, a bunch of kidders working there.
Mr. Joe on January 15, 2009 at 9:02 AM
No, no, that can’t be true. I mean, the Israelis are a bunch of gun wielding maniacs. The Israelis are overreacting. The Israelis are always at fault.
Right? RIGHT?!!????
Where are our resident Hate Israel types to agree with this, only to realize that I’m being sarcastic???
On Topic: Why is the UN so completely useless?
mjk on January 15, 2009 at 9:05 AM
Far as I’m concerned, that makes that school fair game for targeting.
Time to send the UN to Geneva and have a nice fundraising land sale at Turtle Bay.
Matt Helm on January 15, 2009 at 9:08 AM
Huge thumbs up for this article Ed. The UN is funded primarily by American tax dollars. In essence, Americans are funding an organization that has been busted (in recent years) raping woman and children, murdering woman and children, and other acts of terrorism against mankind. Far to many Americans, who get their news from the MSM, don’t know diddly squat about the UN and their despicable behavior; nor do they know the simple fact that Americans are largely responsible for funding this terror ridden organization.
Keemo on January 15, 2009 at 9:09 AM
Wait! Don’t the Dems want to enact the Global Poverty Act that guarantees the UN a percentage of the US gpd?
beththebaker on January 15, 2009 at 9:09 AM
Meant GDP….multi tasking..sorry
beththebaker on January 15, 2009 at 9:10 AM
Awesome idea! Stop the money to the UN. We should not be supporting a terrorist organization.
becki51758 on January 15, 2009 at 9:14 AM
Hey, but they aren’t raping little girls. Isn’t that progress?
OF course, if they were raping little girls they’d then probably assist the girls’ families in honor killing the girls then. Don’t want to be culturally insensitive now.

Nice pander, Ed. We are not going to be leaving the UN. Ever.
Let’s just stick to the situation in Gaza.

Shocka! The UN, anti-Semitic?
Why do we continue to pay half of that corrupt bureaucracy’s bills?
jgapinoy on January 15, 2009 at 9:22 AM
BHO, adopt McCain’s idea & start a League of Democracies.
jgapinoy on January 15, 2009 at 9:22 AM
It’s important to emphasize for the people who haven’t thought this through that we shouldn’t leave the UN. Instead, we should just donate no money and veto everything in the Security Council and kill the organization. A functioning UN without the US could a quite dangerous enemy force.
thuja on January 15, 2009 at 9:23 AM
Yes, not just that, but a plethora of power-grabbing schemes to enlarge control and achieve permanent funding…. Control/tax internet, control/tax guns, energy use regulation…
The left sees the UN like it sees the courts. For the left, the UN is the back door to power over our government, hence our daily lives. We’ll be lucky if the Obama-Reid-Pelosi government doesn’t support the UN in ways that irreversibly damage our sovereignty, including our options in the future for disengaging from it.

The United Nations Religious Wacko Advocates strike again.
UN out of Planet Earth.
They’re worse than useless now; they ARE the enemy.
BKennedy on January 15, 2009 at 9:30 AM
I wouldn’t protest if the IDF bombed the UN building inside the US. In fact, I would probably welcome it and applaud pretty loudly.

How is Barry going to treat Hamas? Is he going to stand up to them or kiss them on both cheeks and “negotiate”?
kingsjester on January 15, 2009 at 9:37 AM
I wonder if the strike wasn’t a result of automatic targeting of Hamas missle launch sites. Israel can target any site used to launch missles within seconds of the launch. Or am I being Mr. Obvious?

Is it time to cut off the head of the snake?
The problem with Hamas is they have shown there is little or no chain of command within the ranks, or they are allowing their “lieutenants” to continue to launch rockets into Israel. They have already admitted to deploying weapons and armaments next to schools, churches, and other public buildings using their citizens as human shields. Why doesn’t the world’s “opinionators” and diplomats blast Hamas for these tactics? They are banking on the same public opinion that forced Israel to halt the assault in the Hezbollah war in Lebanon.
Choose any country in the world, and duplicate the scenario that’s going on in Israel—-where Kassam rockets are fired continuously into a neighboring country. How long before some one says enough is enough? What if a radical faction set up shop outside Montreal and started firing rockets into upstate New York while the Canadian government claimed they have no control to stop the assault? How many years, days, minutes would the U.S. put up with this? As long as Hamas, Hezbollah, (and their big brother/supplier of arms, Iran) continue to maintain their sole purpose is to exterminate Jews from the face of the earth, ideologies and a quest for a peaceful existence will remain unattainable. It may be time to cut off the head of the snake, which is the Iranian influence and the source for most of the conflicts in the Middle East. The world has to stop turning their collective “blind eyes” to the root cause of this war and the destruction of human life. The Supreme Leader in Iran, (Ali Khamenei), and the Expediency Discernment Council (headed by Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani) must be served the ultimate notice——enough is enough!

And here all this time I thought that the UNRWA was just a terrorist boondoggel! The UNRWA is so enmeshed with Palestinian resistance that you can’t separate the terrorists from the UN peeps with a crowbar.

Since the Libs seem to kowtow to polling…seems 94% of Israelis are in favor of the current operations against Hamas.
Now, if a similar poll were conducted here in the US, I have to believe that an overwhelming majority would favor our financial contributions to the United Nations be cut, if not completely, then at least significantly.
The UN super-bureaucracy costs money…requires it, and if you look at the upper-level wage structure inside the UN you’d find it on par with any number of Fortune 500 executive pay scales. The UN has over-reached its boundaries in so many ways, and programs once designed for benign purposes are consistently being perverted into creatures that no longer are benign and no longer of useful service to those they were designed to assist…save for the bureaucrats running their multi-million dollar budgets.
Surprised that the UN is offering aid and comfort to Hamas instead of the “poor Palestinians?” Why should you be? This is a routine pattern…suck up to dictators under the guise of “we need to so we can have access to the ‘people’.”
It won’t happen with the incoming Administration…that’s a pipe dream…but at some point, and soon, we need to reassess our financing of the UN, go to an a la carte menu if we contribute at all, but above all, we need to ask seriously why scarce American dollars are being spent so the UN can enrich themselves and so many, too many, tinpot dictators across the globe.
In the meantime…if the UN permits Hamas to enter their facilities and while there fire upon Israelis, the UN should understand they have abrogated ANY right to protest incoming Israeli artillery or guided munitions.
coldwarrior on January 15, 2009 at 9:57 AM
Don’t forget LOST, the Law of the Sea Treaty. If that goes through, the UN rules the seas and will be thenceforth “self-funded” through fees and fines, and they would happily do without our contribution, and influence.
Maquis on January 15, 2009 at 9:57 AM
Oh f*ck , that will be global socialism.

While we’re at it maybe we could get the textbooks used in our public schools put on the internet for public inspection.
Wouldn’t the halt of monies to the UN come after re-evaluation, not before? That at least is within the realm of possibility.

It doesn’t get any coverage in the dinosaur media but Hamas openly talks about conquering Rome, Europe and North and South America. Maybe we could let those experts free from Gitmo to help them.
snaggletoothie on January 15, 2009 at 10:53 AM
This must be wrong. How could Hamas terrorists be getting training at the school when there’s no drilling allowed in UNRWA?

The UN is a terrorist organization.

I don’t know about Haiti, any number of countries would do, but just move them off our soil…they have been here long enough and have overstayed their welcome.
Like the bad in-laws, they have consume all of our goodwill, we have fed them, given them “cover”, paid there bills…time for them to leave…the holiday is over.

The dummy running the UN says the Gaza death toll is “unbearable.” In a country of 1.4 million, the death toll has been about 1,000 of which, 800+ are militants. The death toll of this war is amazingly low and Israel should be commended and the UN should stfu.
Blake on January 15, 2009 at 11:37 AM
We should drop out of the UN NOW and turn the UN building in NY into a homeless center/school/job training center to hep put peopl back to work!
The UN is nothing but supporters of Islamo-fascists and Jihadi apologists!
The UN is a worthless sickening farce and must go!!

Um, not to put too fine a point on it, but the Hope-n-Change Administration is about to bring our policy goals much closer to the UN, not farther away.
Mike D. on January 15, 2009 at 1:04 PM
The UN can’t have the plug pulled on it. It won’t die.
If you want to destroy it then you’ll have to create a competing entity… probably within the UN itself. After all, the UN does a good job of providing translators and corresponding with various governments. It’s problem is these sub committees are all crazy. So we create competing sub committees that can’t be taken over or that are structured such that they can’t be taken over.
As to kicking the UN out of New York, I don’t see the point of that. Why? The building isn’t doing us any harm.
