Quote of the day

posted at 10:30 pm on January 15, 2009 by Allahpundit

“Ms. Sherine was joined by Oxford zoologist Richard Dawkins, a leading British atheist and author of ‘The God Delusion.’

He predicted anger from believers. ‘They have to take offense, it is the only weapons they’ve got,’ Mr. Dawkins said as the first bus rolled through the streets of London. ‘They’ve got no arguments.’

But the response by most faith leaders isn’t quite what was expected.”

He predicted anger from believers. ‘They have to take offense, it is the only weapons they’ve got,’ Mr. Dawkins said as the first bus rolled through the streets of London. ‘They’ve got no arguments.’

He’s wrong about this. Maybe he ought to reexamine the rest of his ideas, along these lines, to see where else he was wrong.

In the end, atheists (not all, but in general) tend to be offended by things such as this, so maybe needs to look a little more inwards.

progressoverpeace on January 15, 2009 at 10:35 PM

LOL… The atheists clearly wanted the Christians to take the bait, but it seems that most Christians have lives and are not crazy extremists who get bent out of shape about everything.

Of course not, the atheists wanted to live long enough to see the official reaction.

Th UK’s religious leaders are a joke. They have bowed to Muslims and do not stand for anything. Maybe it’s because England has “lost” it’s religiosity long ago.

It doesn’t hurt that there are so few practising Christians in the UK, either.

Damian G. on January 15, 2009 at 10:42 PM

‘They’ve got no arguments.’

An investigative & legal reporter for a major Chicago newspaper–atheist Lee Strobel–was annoyed. His wife had become a “Jesus freak”, & Lee felt it was his duty to use his abilities & the tools at his disposal to investigate this sect in order to free her from this delusion. But the more he looked into the facts, the less sure of himself he became, until he embraced the one faith he tried to destroy. Today he is a best-selling author & speaker.

Atheists are fine.
Activist fundamentalist atheists are not vexing – they are tedious.

The statement is so half-hearted and pseudo-scientific it gave me a genuine chuckle.

Let them have their say. America for the forseeable future will remain a strong religious, yet open minded nation. And I think it’s a key in our greatness.

The history of the thing is absolutely fascinating.

Krydor on January 15, 2009 at 10:51 PM

I think they signs are a great opportunity for Christians to teach. People have questions about these things and the busses will bring them out and give people a reason to talk. Also to pass out videos like, oh say, The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel. It’s a pretty good video on the evidence that Christ did exist. You should check it out AP.

boomer on January 15, 2009 at 10:51 PM

Oh there is also The Case for a Creator. I haven’t seen that one yet though.

boomer on January 15, 2009 at 10:52 PM

The sign “There’s probably is no God–now stop worrying and enjoy your life”, seems like just so much projection.

In real life I don’t see many theists worrying about God sneaking up on them, or them not enjoying their lives. More like the other way around.

Itchee Dryback on January 15, 2009 at 10:52 PM

“The bus ads simply echo the secular premises of society,”

Well said.
Why get angry at a message we hear every day (if not as bluntly)?

jgapinoy on January 15, 2009 at 10:54 PM

One has to love how the organization had to “soften” its position statement in the advertisment because, under British law, they would have had to prove the truth of their statement:

Some organizers wanted a flat “there is no God” statement. Dawkins favored an “almost certainly no God” wording. But Ms. Sherine says that British advertising officials advised that a phrase less absolute and not subject to proof would ensure the ad did not run afoul of the advertising standards authority.

As a pretty devout Catholic, I’m now wondering what would happen if my Church were to run an advertising campaign in Britain? Would the other shoe be on the…would the ill-fitting shoe…whatever.

jgapinoy on January 15, 2009 at 10:56 PM

The roots of all three religions come from Judaism.

Islam is monotheistic. It has little else in common with Christianity.
Islam says Allah has no friends & you have to work to keep him from destroying you.
Christianity says God loved us so much that he gives us a chance to have our sins forgiven & our lives changed because Jesus suffered what we deserve.

Wrong again. Yaweh was the God of the Hebrews and any sojourner that took His ways upon themselves which would include the arabs (or sons if Ishmael).
Again the koran was a completely distinguishable book from the Bible which had Biblical adaptations only.

katy on January 15, 2009 at 11:04 PM

Hell is an eternity of having to Bertrand Russell and Dawkins telling you how smart they are. They would regularly tell you that you couldn’t be in hell because they’d already proved there is no such place with frequent reminders that there are no turtles.

snaggletoothie on January 15, 2009 at 11:07 PM

Deuteronomy 30:19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.

Choosing life is not thumbing your nose at God. They pretend that God is dead or does not exist, but deep down in their heart they know otherwise. That’s what makes them so angry at God and his followers. Oh and “don’t worry and enjoy your life” isn’t too far from what Jesus preached in Matthew 6:33-4 and John 10:10. Polls are consistent: the ones who enjoy their lives most are followers of Christ.

Christian Conservative on January 15, 2009 at 11:07 PM

Seven Seas on January 15, 2009 at 11:01 PM

With all due respect to your beliefs, “magic” is usually a reference to human control over the forces of nature. The nature of God’s work is usually referred to as a miracle.

Also, the concept of God, generally speaking, usually is a reference to the omnipotent, universal, all is one, almighty and powerful. Hardly a reference to a “man” in the sky.

I think we can get carried away with other people’s perceptions when we harbor prejudices and invoke stereotypes.

Krydor on January 15, 2009 at 10:51 PM

You haven’t read the Koran? Mohammad made sure that he had God make them all Muslim! There’s quite a long sura (Sura 4) proclaiming that the New Testament is a lie perpetrated upon the world by those who wrote it — Jesus was never crucified [it was a facsimile substituted by God], and that the doctrine of the Trinity (Jehovah’s Witnesses probably love this) is false because Jesus was only a prophet, and never the Son of God. All the prophets (including the prophet Jesus) embrace Islam.

I used to be an atheist till the incredible beauty and intrincacies of His creation overwhelmed me. I am a Christian because I believe in the grace and love our Creator has for us and that Christ is the Redeemer for our very human sins. It is a long journey and the path is narrow with many briars and pitfalls along the way but as long as you hold His hand you can manage them. Life is not meant to be a joy ride but a challenge and we need all the help we can get. When you seek His Grace you find the strength to get through even the hardest of times. Atheism provides none of that comfort, only cold, that leaves one angry and resentful as Dawkins illustrates so well.

Krydor on January 15, 2009 at 10:51 PM

Yes, we’re the heathens who just won’t accept that Islam fulfills our paltry religions. Mostly because we’ve got explicit textual warnings in the Bible against such happenings. And because their God is not our God (case in point: God isn’t both producing good and evil; theirs is.) But hey, it’s all the same. (And the books concerning the Hebrews/Israelites that called on Yahweh are…in the Bible.)

SnarkVader on January 15, 2009 at 11:24 PM

You don’t need God. You just need to use the thing He gave you: a brain. Gay marriage is, quite simply, extra-constitutional. No, my pro Prop 8 position was motivated by what the gays would eventually do to the rest of us from a rights standpoint. I learned from the abortion issue that if you give someone rights who doesn’t believe as you believe, they will ultimately use that leverage to further restrict your rights. I can see a future where vouchers are denied people who would attend religious schools because the religions associated with those schools think homosexuality is a sin. That same future with regard to abortion is here in California now — there is no right of refusal based on conscience for pharmacists or nurses.

I’d rather keep my rights, thank you.

And I could give you thousands of links to research that supports gay marriage. What’s your point?

SnarkVader on January 15, 2009 at 11:50 PM

Funny but it is precisely because there is a God that I stopped worrying and started enjoying my life.

Since He isn’t bossing anybody around, why do these people get so concerned about Him? If they’re right, it doesn’t matter. And if they’re wrong, it’ll be too late when they find out.

Illogical, they are.

(Was about to close, thought I’d answer this.)

There is a load of difference between saying ‘everything’s alright, no worries’ and recognizing the imprint of God on every person. Realize that you were not worthy of the salvation given you by Christ, and you are more understanding of the flaws of the lost. They simply don’t understand.

People are wretched sinners. They deserve Hell, wrath, and judgment. But therefore, so do I. Without Christ, I am Snark.

God bless you both, and ‘nite.

And each link would have zero value.

The point is that you are a pervert. You cannot be “queer” or “gay” because there is no genetic basis for deviant sexual behavior. You call yourself that so that you can argue as if there was such a component because you do not want to admit the truth about yourself – that you choose to engage in perverted deviant sex AND you are desperate for approval from normal people (who you know are superior).

How’s that work for you? Recognize yourself?

There’s a slight problem with your comment.

Yeah I suppose if you ignore all the complaints, then there have been no complaints!

BathTub on January 16, 2009 at 12:05 AM

I’ll let you find that out for yourself….I like it when people learn things the hard way…

right4life on January 15, 2009 at 11:26 PM

The problem with American “Christianity” is the lack of persecution. Since it’s socially acceptable here to claim to have faith, imposters (Jesus called them “tares”) abound. In places where Christians are persecuted, you’ll only find the most devout proclaiming Jesus. There, no Christian will “like it” when people are judged for their sin.
I don’t know if right4life is an imposter or a real Christian, but I know he ought to love his enemies.

There have been THREE prior events in very recent memory that should have illicited the kind of uproar and commotion this attention whore would have LIKED to have been the focus of.

1: ‘Piss’ Christ

2: ‘Chocolate’ Jesus

3: ‘Elephant Dung’ Virgin Mary

All three events were created by, and sponsored by, attention whores. Just. Like. Him.

The attention the previous events received varied, but still, it was bit more or a little less what this nitwit illicited.

He’s obviously fouled up in the cranium, and not .01% of the intellectual he thinks he is. Otherwise, he’d have realized that while going for Christian uproar, all he would illicit is what he deserves, passing notice.

Now, if he were to substitute ‘God’ with ‘Allah’ or ‘Prophet Mohammad’, he’d be fleeing the country and into self-exile in search of safe haven… but I’m certain the the .01% intellect in him isn’t even that stupid.

“In religion and politics people’s beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second-hand, and without examination, from authorities who have not themselves examined the questions at issue but have taken them at second-hand from other non-examiners, whose opinions about them were not worth a brass farthing.”

On Jan. 6 some 800 British red “bendy” buses carried the sign: “There is probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.”

And, uh, so why are they saying, “There is probably no God,” if they believe there is no God?

apacalyps on January 16, 2009 at 12:40 AM

“The bus ads simply echo the secular premises of society,” says Gabriel Fackre, professor emeritus of the Andover-Newton Theological School in Boston. “There’s no longer a protestant orthodoxy in Great Britain or America. The churches are in a counterculture position whether they realize it or not. That puts us much closer to 1st-century Christianity, and that is an opportunity for the church.”

AHAHAHAHAA. Take that, Allahpundit.

Richard Dawkins is a reactionary zealot who spends most of his time trying to pick fights with a group of people and a system of belief that he has trouble comprehending let alone understanding. Personally I hope the response they got from religious groups really burned his chaps because as it says in the bible “A gentle answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger”.

Dreadnought223 on January 16, 2009 at 1:04 AM

God does not exist. He is being itself beyond essence and existence. Therefore to argue that God exists is to deny him.
