Palin not invited to Obama dinner for McCain?

posted at 3:05 pm on January 15, 2009 by Allahpundit

Her spokesman claims he doesn’t know if she was or not, but come on.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, his controversial running-mate, will not attend the dinner, Bill McAllister, a Palin spokesman tells Mother Jones…

Was she even invited? “I don’t know if she was invited,” McCallister says. Don’t know? How could that be? It’s hard to miss an invitation from a presidential inauguration committee. For its part, Obama’s inaugural committee has declined to say whether an invitation was sent to Palin. Repeated phone calls to its press office produced no answer to this simple question…

If Palin was left off the guest list, it’s not clear whether the snub came from McCain or the Presidential Inaugural Committee.

Isn’t it? I’m tempted to poll that question but we all know how it would go. Speaking of which, Rick Santorum chimes in this morning on why The One is bending over backwards to honor McCain: Because he knows a dependable maverick when he sees one.

In McCain’s mind, however, losing the presidency will not be the final chapter of his life story. He knows the path to “Big Media” redemption. Working with the man who vanquished him in November will show them all the real McCain again.

Remember, it was this onetime prisoner of war who led the charge to open diplomatic relations with Vietnam. If that past is prologue, and McCain’s legislative record is any guide, he will not just join with Obama but lead the charge in Congress on global warming, immigration “reform,” the closing of Guantanamo, federal funding for embryonic-stem-cell research, and importation of prescription drugs.

But McCain won’t stop there in his effort to rehabilitate himself in the media’s – or maybe his own – eyes. He will forge common ground on a long list of initiatives that go far beyond where he has gone before, including the stimulus package.

So obviously true is this that I’m not going to bother polling it, either. Instead, let’s approach the question this way: Are there any major policy initiatives on which McCain will break sharply with Obama? You’re all going to say Iraq but you’re kidding yourselves. For one thing, they’re already working hard to assimilate Maverick’s chief crony on that, and for another, he and Obama have always been more in sync on this subject than most of us would like to admit. In fact, if The One does try to speed up his withdrawal plans, the first person he’ll call to ask for cover on that is McCain. McCain might not give it to him, but the gesture at least will prevent him from leading some sort of GOP insurrection.

Obama is holding the dinner; it would be Obama’s call whether to send the invitation. An invitation probably wasn’t because Sarah Palin is not part of the Washington D.C. scene. For the same reason, Obama met with Washington D.C. “conservatives,” but not Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity.

As for Rick Santorum’s article, all Santorum has done is to give a forum to McCain haters at a time when the GOP needs to focus on getting its act together. I happen to believe that requires a definitive conservative direction, but I also believe that McCain bashing is counter-productive. The McCain-Palin ticket ran on a solid platform; in foreign affairs, military matters and national security, McCain’s knowledge and experience cannot be questioned. This, however, was a tough year for the GOP; McCain was the only Republican that the polls showed who had a chance of winning the Presidency; all other alternatives had far worse poll numbers. Unfortunately, there were “headwinds” that precluded any Republican, even McCain, from being elected President — a financial meltdown that created economic anxieties that have historically favored the Democrats and did this year; a Bush Administration financial bailout that muddied the waters of what was a Reaganesque economic message delivered by McCain and Palin on the campaign trail; the unpopularity of President Bush, which is unfair but which is the result of unceasing attack by the Left and President Bush not using the bully pulpit to defend his Administration; money and more money, some of it illegal, that Obama had; and media bias that was absurdly in the tank for Obama and that operated effectively day-in, day-out as a propaganda machine for Democrats. The “tailwinds” that should work for the GOP of strong military and national security, strong values and strong economy based on freedom and opportunity did not blow for the GOP this year because of the unusual economic situation that arose. Before the financial meltdown, McCain was ahead in the polls; after the meltdown, the economic anxieties, the Obama money and the media bias trumped all.

At this point, we need to focus on the future; as for McCain, let’s wait and see what John McCain actually does before attacking him. He can go in a number of different directions, some unwise and some wise. What is far, far more important for Republicans to do at this point is to develop ideologically sound positions for the issues ahead of us — reload intellectually so to speak. Socialism and socialist-like liberal domestic programs do not work, and so-called soft power (better called appeasement diplomacy) is a recipe for disaster in foreign affairs. Again, it is on the issues that we Republicans need to focus.

LimeyGeek on January 15, 2009 at 3:46 PM

http://www.conservatives4palin.com/2009/01/obamamccain-snub-cuda.html

I’d say she wasn’t invited because I’m sure she would have felt obligated to go if she had been, but she does have a couple of things going on next week: i.e. the start of the legislative session, relocating her family to Juneau for the session, and her State of the State address. A trip to D.C. for her isn’t a quick thing either. It’s about a 10 hour flight from Alaska to D.C. (one way) so her time in the air alone would have kept her out of the state for an entire day. McAllister should have ignored ‘Mother Jones’ questions like the Obama transition office has. Never give outlets like ‘Mother Jones’ a comment about anything. They just want to stir things up.

joey24007 on January 15, 2009 at 3:59 PM

Look folks: On whose behalf is the Presidential Inaugural Committee organized? Obama. Who would be in charge of issuing invitations to anybody? Obama’s people. Who is supposedly the main focus of the dinner? McCain. Was McCain, his wife or a McCain staffer consulted by the committee to whom should be invited? Not sure. So let’s not condemn McCain until we know more. Instead, let’s reserve judgment. However if this is allowed to stand I will admit this snub is not inadvertent but deliberate and the blame should be placed at the feet of Obama without any further evidence to the contrary. Sarah is an anathema to Obama. She is the only thing now standing in Obama’s way from being re-elected in 2012.

After the economic crisis worsened doubts about her competence and her disastrous interviews led to her led to her becoming increasingly disfavored. She ended up with really high negatives in the polls. She was definitely a net drag on the ticket.

so it’s the truth that I want to have sex with a McCain blow up doll(, BillyRayValentine on January 15, 2009 at 1:31 PM)? This is the derangement that I am speaking of. Honest disagreements with McCain is not derangement. I disagree with some opinions here that he wanted to lose to Obama. I don’t agree with everything he stands for, but in a contest where he’s competing with Obama, I think that he would be a better president than Obama. Now that the election is over, and McCain won’t run for president again, you all are safe from the evil McTraitor. If the citizens of Arizona want to vote him out of office because he doesn’t represent them because he’s not conservative enough and he wants to work with Obama, doesn’t want to participate in a stoppage of government with a republican filibuster or whatever a good conservative should do – then so be it. Sounds good. Because McCain obviously has his faults. It’s just a matter of how bad you see the man. Does he want to do what’s right and put his country first and participate with the process of government on behalf of all Americans as he sees it, or is he really a stealth democrat who spent all the decades of his time after coming back for the single purpose to elect a democrat.(as people like austinnelly and a few others have joked. Or, at least I assume it was a joke. Maybe they are actually serious.) Only one of these definitions can be true. Just as some people here don’t want to encourage the trutherism of the Obama birth certificate, I don’t enjoy reading the trutherism of McCain being the GOP suicide bomber.

Anyway. Red Meat.

Cest Lavie.

is this what you mean when you say I “defend” McCaian?

Looking at it from BO’s perspective, I’m having difficulty coming up with any political reason he’d invite her to a state function. I’m sure in his and his advisors’ minds that would do nothing except bestow upon her some national political legitimacy. I’m not saying she does or doesn’t have that (but I’m not a Palin fan), but that would be pretty stupid for BO to do. Inviting McCain is a superficial act, but does no harm.

One out of what…ten thousand attacks against anyone that dares to question the maverick.
As far as how bad I see the maverick. Traitor to his party, those that believe in him and voted for him. They have been betrayed by the democrap lite spitball.

Who do you think you’re kidding? You’re going to have to work harder than that to resuscitate your reputation.

The definition of controversial: provoking strong disagreement or disapproval in public debate. Yes, Sarah is controversial by being a conservative American who will not back down from her beliefs. Guilty, as charged and proud of it!

technopeasant on January 15, 2009 at 4:15 PM

Obama is afraid of Sarah Palin, why would he want to invite her to dinner?

t.ferg on January 15, 2009 at 4:16 PM

She doesn’t need to go to that McCain Obama lovefest …

the legislative session is starting soon in AK … state of the state and all that jazz

being a governor is a real job … unlike being a Senator

Happy birthday, Ms. Sting. :)

I am sure George Soros will be at the dinner………….

…………. saying “Good job, boys.”

Seven Percent Solution on January 15, 2009 at 4:09 PM

You betcha!! This time Soros got a return on his “investment.” Remember when he publicly swore of playing politics? Well, he lied. Soros is a trader. Just got to pick the right entry and double down sometimes. This time he got it right. I have no doubt that he’s going to make it pay in spades (is that raaaacist?). The Clintons are his pals, too. Just wait for more interesting ideas like the last one by Soros’ sons suggesting that we do away with the Electoral College.

When you’re an aging, multi-billionaire there probably aren’t too many kicks left in life other than to go for the ultimate power play.

Sarah is too good for that crowd.

After all the help McCain was to Obama in winning the election it’s no wonder he’s having a party for him.

Glenn Beck’s first guest on his new show on Fox….
Sarah the Cuda Palin
Let’s support Glenn and his new show!

HornetSting on January 15, 2009 at 4:20 PM

After the economic crisis worsened doubts about her competence and her disastrous interviews led to her led to her becoming increasingly disfavored. She ended up with really high negatives in the polls. She was definitely a net drag on the ticket.

crr6 on January 15, 2009 at 4:04 PM

Yes, that was the media narrative. You recite it well.

I provided 2 points ($ and the Chambliss election/comments). You’ve mentioned polls- do you have a link to solid, impartial evidence that Palin hurt the campaign more than she helped?

HornetSting on January 15, 2009 at 4:21 PM

One could argue that the help McCain gave to Obama in winning the election was choosing Palin.

johnnynucleo on January 15, 2009 at 4:22 PM

FloatingRock on January 15, 2009 at 4:13 PM

what I have done, is argue against you and people like you were against McCain while the election was down to a vote for one of two people – McCain and Obama. You and people like you repeatedly said that McCain was a democrat, despite the fact that McCain voted with us 80% of the time. And in a choice between Obama and McCain, that having Obama as a president would be worse. But you didnt’ want any part of this. And in addition to this, you now need to think that I wanted McCain because he was the best candidate. I have mentioned many times that I voted for Mitt Romney in the primary election in my state, and after my candidate lost – I wanted McCain to win over Obama, and I did not want Obama to win over McCain. And all you and people like you wanted to talk about was McCain’s position on Amnesty. And since your memory on what I actually said here is so lacking, I’ll also mention that when Bush wanted Hariet Miers as the next supreme court justice, we fought him on that. And we could have fought McCain on amnesty. ANd with Obama, republicans won’t get any opportunity to challenge him. and you need to continue this fantasy of yours that I supported everything about McCain, when in reality I was challenging you and people like you who were against everything about McCain – fully knowing that the result of a lack of support would be the election of Barack Obama. And this is what I fought you and people like you for. And I lost. And you won. And now you need to tear down McCain until there is nothing left, and anyone who didn’t drink your koolaid about how evil McCain is – they need to be destroyed as well.

wise_man on January 15, 2009 at 4:22 PM

Nice try, sport. Yes, there were 2 choices. Crappy choices, except for Palin, but we had to vote for a dem lite to get to her.
You still defended him thru the disaster of a campaign that he ran, not wanting to offend, even when everyone was trying to destroy his VP, the true conservative.
You defended him after the fact. He is a loser.
He lost. That is true. We are looking ahead, but we still like to beat a dead horse, since the dead horse had vowed to work AGAINST HIS OWN PARTY AND HELP THE CREATURE THAT RAN AGAINST HIM AND MOCKED HIM!

HornetSting on January 15, 2009 at 4:30 PM

MadisonConservative on January 15, 2009 at 4:25 PM

I did not ask for McCain. I did not vote for McCain when the GOP primary came to my state. I wanted McCain to win and not Obama. I wanted Obama to lose, not McCain. McCain is the one who picked Sarah Palin. If it wasn’t for McCain, Sarah Palin would have been content to stay a governor with a 90% approval rating. McCain has never said anything bad about Sarah Palin, he’s only had glowing words for her. Sarah Palin has only said nice things about McCain, she’s never said anything bad about him.

If your version of events were true, then at the least, Sarah Palin would feel free to tell us all the truth since she is no longer under his evil influence. As I said, its a good thing that Sarah Palin isn’t anywhere near the evil McCain or Obama, and yet you still whine and complain.
