Horror: Airbus crashes in Hudson River; Update: Everyone safe

posted at 4:03 pm on January 15, 2009 by Allahpundit

If you’re wondering why it’s still in one piece, it’s because it couldn’t have been in the air for more than 90 seconds or so to have started at LaGuardia and ended up in the Hudson. No details yet, but I’ll be curious to see what the top altitude was.

The cause, if you can believe it, is apparently a collision with a flock of geese. There are survivors; ferries in the river are pulling them off the wings. You can watch live at MSNBC. Stand by for updates.

Update: Surreal footage from CNN. I confess, I didn’t know that planes float.

Update: It’s 20 degrees right now in NYC, incidentally. Wind chill: Seven degrees.

Update: Get a load of this. I’m cautiously optimistic that everyone’s going to be rescued.

Update: CBS NY says it was in the air for six full minutes and made it up to 3,200 feet. I’m amazed it’s intact. The pilot must have brought it down at a remarkably gentle angle.

Update: Ah, here’s why it was in the air for so long — they were actually trying to return to LaGuardia.

The plane, US Airways flight 1549, took off from LaGuardia Airport at 3:26 p.m. was bound for Charlotte, N.C. and had 146 passengers and 5 crew members. The plane may have hit a flock of birds, according to a F.A.A. report, and then descended. The pilot tried to return to the airport when the plane fell into the Hudson.

Evidently there are injuries, but maybe just hypothermia and shock. No reports of deaths yet.

Update: I hope this guy’s right because it looks the plane’s sinking now:

“Prepare for impact” – all that was said by the pilot before the landed in the river according to passenger Alberto Panero in a phone interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.

“Somehow the plane stayed afloat and we were all able to get on the raft,” said Panero. “Some people were on the wings and had to wait there but most of the people were able to get on the raft.”…

“I can’t say 100% but I’m pretty sure everyone was able to get off,” he said. “It was just like a car crash, the impact.”

Update: An eyewitness describes the “incredibly controlled” landing, almost like a sea plane.

Update: The FAA says everyone’s alive. I see a promotion in someone’s future.

Update: Meet the hero. A quote from Time Magazine: “At a press conference soon after the incident, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that the pilot walked up and down the aisle twice to make sure no one was left on the plane.”

Blowback

Airbus? Is plane so 20th century?

lorien1973 on January 15, 2009 at 4:05 PM

My gosh

blatantblue on January 15, 2009 at 4:06 PM

That’s awful. Survival time in water that cold is very limited.

Hopefully the passengers are still dry and they can rescue them quickly.

NoDonkey on January 15, 2009 at 4:08 PM

I hope they all make it

LimeyGeek on January 15, 2009 at 4:08 PM

Holy Goosecrap, Batman. I just put my wife on a US Airways flight to West Palm Beach this AM heading out of LaGuardia. It was an Airbus A319, too. She arrived safely. Talk about irony. Whew.

Jarhead68 on January 15, 2009 at 4:09 PM

I’ll go look somewhere else. I’m not giving MSDNC any traffic.

Indeed. It’s like one of those, “One of these things is not like the others” pic.

I’m glad your wife is safe, of course, but what irony are you talking about?

Allah… check on geese vrs plane crashes.

upinak on January 15, 2009 at 4:11 PM

Wow looking outside my office window at this now, the current in the Hudson is crazy its pulled the plane about 10 blocks south sofar, but now all you can see is the tail.

Rbastid on January 15, 2009 at 4:11 PM

Latest reports say that everyone was rescued …thank God.

Let’s hope that none had too serious of injuries.

The Ugly American on January 15, 2009 at 4:11 PM

I thought US Airways was supposed to land in Long Island Sound. The strange thing is the way the fleet is moving downriver.

Thank goodness planes float and they are getting them out alive.

Seven Percent Solution on January 15, 2009 at 4:11 PM

Wouldn’t it be a gaggle of geese?

Jason Coleman on January 15, 2009 at 4:12 PM

Still….this plane must have been at takeoff speed, climbing, hit the geese and went down. The pilot must have done a good job ditching in the drink to keep it in one piece.

LimeyGeek on January 15, 2009 at 4:12 PM

Passengers telling reporters that “everyone” got off o.k. If that is true…wow!

The cause, if you can believe it, is apparently a collision with a flock of geese.

Yes, I’m serious, those geese are a menace up here in NE.

Prayers for the families, of course.

lorien1973 on January 15, 2009 at 4:05 PM

Maybe the type of plane is an Airbus? Anyways, the river would be the best place for an emergency landing in that situation. Except for the water temp, but hopefully the passengers can stay dry.

BadgerHawk on January 15, 2009 at 4:13 PM

I just heard they got everyone off. I’m glad no one was killed or severely injured.

amerpundit on January 15, 2009 at 4:14 PM

And as long as the place was above stall speed, which after 90 seconds of flight it would have been, the landing wouldn’t be too terrible difficult as long as he had a straight shot at the river.

Can’t planes fly with one engine? If so, then did both engines fail? And if that happened, how in the world did the pilot land this?

Weight of Glory on January 15, 2009 at 4:19 PM

The pilot apparently landed on the water as if he were on a runway. He came in with landing gear up.

Weight of Glory on January 15, 2009 at 4:19 PM

Most planes can glide for quite some distance without any engines. And if it was a flock of birds it’s likely that they took out both engines.

Seven Percent Solution on January 15, 2009 at 4:21 PM

Update: Surreal footage from CNN. I confess, I didn’t know that planes float.

It is probably difficult to make something heavier than water fly. Maybe some high performance fighters, but keep in mind all of that empty space in an airliner. Looking at it, not only is it floating, it is floating quite high.

Count to 10 on January 15, 2009 at 4:22 PM

Passenger: Left engine went out, flames shot out. Pilot told people to brace for hard impact. People went flying in cabin, scratches and banged up. People made their way to the emergency exits, life rafts deployed, water taxis and emergency boats raced up the river. Everyone apparently off safely.

Must have been terrifying, though. For all I hear about flight being the safest form of travel, I’ll take a car over a plane if at all possible.

Weight of Glory on January 15, 2009 at 4:19 PM

Depends on the plane, but I believe so. A flock of geese can do major damage to a plane. Maybe both planes were hit, not enough speed getting into the air. They were taking off. You need all the power you can get…

HornetSting on January 15, 2009 at 4:23 PM

I’m looking at Fox Live Stream but there’s no audio. Is that boat towing the plane or just holding it up? Neither?

Thank God Almighty that everyone got off there.

Wasn’t it a January day back in the early 80′s when that plane went into the Potomac?

I was watching Animal Planet the other night and there was an airport (in Florida) that has bstarted using Border Collies to chase birds away from the runway, it’s working very well.

Large birds going into jet engines is a recipe for disaster and the FAA should be doing more to address this problem.

kingsjester on January 15, 2009 at 4:26 PM

Can’t planes fly with one engine?

Multi-engine planes must be able to maintain a climb on takeoff at maximum gross weight with one engine out. The required climb rate is calculated based on the stall speed.

If the plane could just maintain a climb with both engines out, now *that* would be impressive!

ZenDraken on January 15, 2009 at 4:27 PM

The plane was heading to Charlotte, NC.

Planes have a lot of empty space. Lots of buoyancy.

amerpundit on January 15, 2009 at 4:27 PM

First, my prayers to the victims and their families.

Second, geese? Canada Geese, perhaps?

%$#$&* !!!

I can tell you as someone who has spent more than my fair share of time on golf courses that prior to 1980 +/- there were no, zip, zero, nada geese infesting golf courses. And I learned along the way that the reason that they are here in such abundance is that they were reintroduced.

This from our friends at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology:

# The giant Canada goose subspecies, B. canadensis maxima, formerly bred from central Manitoba to Kentucky. It was nearly driven extinct in the early 1900s. Programs to reestablish the subspecies to it original range were tremendously successful, and in fact, in some places were too successful. The numerous introductions and translocations created a number of resident populations, and the geese have become a nuisance in many urban and suburban areas.

Who cares if they foul up a golf course or a park, whatever, but when the environmental do-gooders try messing around with nature and another one of their schemes starts killing people, it gives me a case of the red ass.

God help those poor people.

turfmann on January 15, 2009 at 4:28 PM

Maybe the type of plane is an Airbus?

Airbus planes (at least most that I know of) are of the fly-by-wire type. There’s no mechanical link between the cockpit controls and the flaps, rudder, etc. Instead, the connection is solely by electric wires.
