Video: Kudlow on dinner with the Messiah

Via Breitbart, sounds like the charm offensive worked. Ace says he would have gone too if asked, but the fact that attendees were sworn to secrecy (which is traditional, apparently) would have bugged me. Why meet with the president if you can’t report on it? The benefit to Obama’s obvious: By humanizing himself to his detractors, he takes the edge off their criticism. What’s the benefit to Will, Brooks, Noonan et al? An autographed photo with The One? The gratification of knowing that they’re officially part of the conservative illuminati? Arguably they’re there to represent right-wing opinion — really arguably in Brooks’s case — but (a) I think Obama’s familiar with the counterarguments to his policies by now and (b) theoretically we have congressmen for that.
I don’t know. Not a big deal, as everyone can relate to wanting to meet the president; I just hope it’s worth the aggravation they’ll get from parts of the grassroots who’ll question their objectivity vis-a-vis Obama going forward. On to happier subjects, though: At long last, after years of toil, today Andrew Sullivan got to meet his personal savior. I wonder if they swapped theories on who Trig’s real mom is.

lorien1973 on January 14, 2009 at 3:23 PM
I read the transcript via Drudge earler. Pathetic. And you’re right, Allah: The goal was to humanize himself to people that would’ve been critical of his agenda going forward. It’s harder to rip a “friend” than an enemy.
amerpundit on January 14, 2009 at 3:23 PM
its a free country, anyway Noonan and Brooks don’t count. My question, are conservatives more welcome to eat dinner with Obama then the Odious Olberman?

We don’t know that he wasn’t at the liberal commentators’ meeting. We know that Rachel Maddow was there.
amerpundit on January 14, 2009 at 3:27 PM
Will talked about the existentialist implications of putting a left-handed pitcher up against a right-handed power hitter with runners on first and third … Noonan aired some detached, whispy rhetoric about the larger meaning of it all … Obama recited some obscure Reinhold Niebhur writing … and Brooks got a thrill up his leg.

I was right last night calling it a ménage à quatre. Only today I learned that it was at least a ménage à huit. The number will probalby go up.
Ménage à huit, or ménage à however many = clusterfark. Just don’t ever forget who does the farking. Like they say “some vaseline doesn’t contain sand”. Keep in mind that your wallets may contain rocks, before you get carried away. You know who you are.

Swooning McLame, Grahamnesty, and Lieberman. Now the elitist garbage that call themselves “conservative.”
Basically, we’ve lost half of National Review with Lowry, Buckley, Kudlow, Parker, etc. (William F. Buckley is rolling in his grave) and Weekly Standard (the liberal wing of the republican party).
Suckers all over the place.
Have your dinner parties and caviar fools. You’re being used as plants for Obama to demonstrate his “Lincolnesque qualities.” The republican party has become the party of buffoons, drones, and wimps.

David in ATL on January 14, 2009 at 3:31 PM
There’s a cynical way to view a lot of Obama’s decisions, but what if they cynical take isn’t accurate in this case?
Did he really need to do this? Do we honestly think a supposed Marxist would care what a bunch of right wing pundits have to say about him and his policies? He may be legitimately reaching out to conservatives. It remains to be seen if any common ground could be found, of course.
But maybe he’s just a guy who we’ll disagree with a lot, and not the bogeyman. But then I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt. We’ll see, I suppose.
TheUnrepentantGeek on January 14, 2009 at 3:32 PM
So, so disappointing. I really enjoy reading Kudlow on NRO and his show’s pretty entertaining. And George Will has struck me as very smart.
Why?

If all it would have taken to get George Bush’s critics to shut up was to give them some cold roast beef, he sure missed an opportunity. “Journalists” and pundits promising not to talk. How preposterous!

Kudlow will probably get ribbed for that comment, but there’s something to be said for the President of the United States (regardless of who it is). I bet you, Hannity or even Michael Savage would be similarly distracted and awed to be sitting across from the President be it Obama, Bush or Laroushe.

I did. Scary stuff Levin read. Obama is Machiavellian and sinister in his methods in terms of destroying the republican party. Sadly, we are few to notice his deeds. Too many suckers in our party that want to be part of the drone mentality.

I don’t care who Obomber dines with, after Ayers and Wright. But the pack of Washington frauds he cuddled with last night is in no way “conservative,” and if he doesn’t know that, he is dumber than supposed.
james23 on January 14, 2009 at 3:45 PM
He’s a guest, at least once a week, on Kudlow’s television program. He is, as you say, a detestable little man, but also quite dangerous and influential. Larry Kudlow is a very polite and cordial man, and is cheery with people I loathe. He only loses his genial demeanor when referring to Madoff, for reasons I can’t understand. Surely, Robert Reich and Co. have done and will do far more damage to the US economy than Madoff. It must be personal, but in what way I don’t know.
JiangxiDad on January 14, 2009 at 3:47 PM
Andrew Sullivan was grouped with the liberal illuminati.
http://www.politico.com/blogs/michaelcalderone/0109/Obama_meets_with_liberal_columnists.html?showall
Well I give Obama tact in showing good manners by doing that.
Mr. Joe on January 14, 2009 at 3:48 PM
The group included the Washington Post’s E.J. Dionne and Eugene Robinson, the Wall Street Journal’s Gerry Seib, National Journal’s Ron Brownstein, the New York Times Frank Rich and Maureen Dowd, The Atlantic’s Andrew Sullivan, and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, among others.
Some of the writers there today are clearly on the liberal side, while others more moderate. Regardless, it’s still quite a contrast from yesterday’s dinner companions: George Will, Bill Kristol, David Brooks, Charles Krauthammer, Peggy Noonan, and Paul Gigot.
It’s interesting that Sullivan — author of “The Conservative Soul” — was invited along with the more liberal wing of the chattering class. Perhaps his Palin-bashing during the campaign wouldn’t have gone over well with the righties.

Republicans and Conservatives value civility, in that they value our civilization. This allows radicals to put on ties and be treated as equals. It’s a mistake the left never makes, but one we never learn from.
As far as I’m concerned, Obama is radioactive. The strategy hamstringed Bush, and if we are to hamstring Obama, it must be employed.
Israel promotes civilization by destroying Hamas. Conservatives can do the same by destroying the Obama presidency. As Rush reminds us, we don’t want him to succeed, we want our ideals to succeed.

Anyone need anymore evidence that Obama has the mainstream media in his pocket for and his playing the rest like a fiddle. I guess he wants to make sure they do everything they can to make his presidency a success. Just like Chris Matthews. :)
Indy928 on January 14, 2009 at 4:12 PM
When you read Amity Shales’ book “the forgotten man,” you realize that FDR was a political genius in that he was able to win re-election three times despite implementing a major economic plan that failed to revive the economy.
How did he do it?
He maximized the “perception” of his presidential actions using a new media much better than his Republican counterparts (radio) and building an unstoppable political machine through government spending that rewarded specific constituents (unions, women, minorities, government contractors, municipalities, states, etc.) and created the perception of positive government action. While the New Deal’s construction of libraries, museums, and parks had little impact on re-building the economy, they had a significant impact on demonstrating to people that the government was doing something constructive.
Obama is doing the same thing. And he is doing it well. Good news for Democrats; bad news for the economy.

Mercy4Me on January 14, 2009 at 4:23 PM
Excuse me, but who, among those listed (with the possible exception of Bill Kristol) could reasonably be called Obama’s detractors? I wouldn’t exactly call it preaching to the converted (other than Noonan, of course), but it was hardly a hostile crowd.
I think it is subversive for ostensibly “conservative” media to meet with the new leader of our country who is an avowed socialist off the record It just serves to create distrust among conservative readership.
It’s not a charm offensive if they already consider you charming. Show some real cojones, Obama and aim your sites on big game: Limbaugh! (Ummmm, good luck with that!)
Puddleglum on January 14, 2009 at 4:23 PM
The consensus seems to be that most of these ‘conservative’ spokesmen don’t speak for most conservatives.
They are only conservative ’spokesmen’ because the dinosaur media have so named them because they usually aren’t conservative enough to make the MSM uncomfortable. They are obedient house slaves.
snaggletoothie on January 14, 2009 at 4:23 PM
I think Will and Krauthammer are Obama detractors, and I like them both. I don’t like what they did, insofar as it’s off-the-record. If they could fully disclose what happened, I’d like them to eat with Bambi every day.
I like Kudlow a lot, but I wish he were more of a detractor. Again, he shouldn’t meet with Obama off-the- record.

Great one! We gotta use this.
By the way, speaking of Vichy, I was talking to my Dad earlier today, and we were talking about Gran Torino and Valkyrie.
Get this. My Dad when he was a battery commander in Germany in ‘55 told me he had lunch with a German general in the post-WWII German army who was also a general in WWII Germany who was in the room where the suitcase exploded from that assassination attempt. My Dad said he showed him his two 280mm guns (atomic cannons). They were on NATO maneuvers. Also, during those maneuvers, a French officer captured my Dad’s battery, but get this: The French guy, after learning my Dad’s (my last name) name (which is a French name), LET MY FATHER GO! My Dad got freed by a Frenchie because my last name is French.
I can’t make this stuff up.
