Via Breitbart, sounds like the charm offensive worked. Ace says he would have gone too if asked, but the fact that attendees were sworn to secrecy (which is traditional, apparently) would have bugged me. Why meet with the president if you can’t report on it? The benefit to Obama’s obvious: By humanizing himself to his detractors, he takes the edge off their criticism. What’s the benefit to Will, Brooks, Noonan et al? An autographed photo with The One? The gratification of knowing that they’re officially part of the conservative illuminati? Arguably they’re there to represent right-wing opinion — really arguably in Brooks’s case — but (a) I think Obama’s familiar with the counterarguments to his policies by now and (b) theoretically we have congressmen for that.
I don’t know. Not a big deal, as everyone can relate to wanting to meet the president; I just hope it’s worth the aggravation they’ll get from parts of the grassroots who’ll question their objectivity vis-a-vis Obama going forward. On to happier subjects, though: At long last, after years of toil, today Andrew Sullivan got to meet his personal savior. I wonder if they swapped theories on who Trig’s real mom is.

K.T. McFraland said this morning that she was told the meeting with the conservatives didn’t go well
KBird on January 14, 2009 at 5:18 PM
They’re journalists and pundits–opinion leaders! And they’re sworn not to report the facts and give their opinions.Brilliant!
Did they go there for the food???
JiangxiDad on January 14, 2009 at 5:18 PM
They only agreed with Obama 98% of the time
joey24007 on January 14, 2009 at 5:19 PM
Kudlow is a class act. Best show on at 7 pm. No harm in going to dinner. Of the conservatives listed, he is probably the top one now.
As an aside, Melissa Francis has to be the currently hottest Little House on the Prairie girl.

Hearsay vs. someone who was actually there, wonder who has more credibility.
I think it’s telling that the only “real” conservatives folks around here trust are those who are shock jock radio hosts, Levin, Savage and their ideological father Rush. Whenever someone makes a cogent and intellectual argument they are yelled at for relying on “college education” (once part of the American dream and now a dirty word I guess) and they are “elites”. Meanwhile radio hosts who make a hell of a lot more money and are bought and sold by their sponsors and whose opinions are regulated by the marketplace are somehow more “honest” than these folks? Except…not. There is no sign that Rush Limbaugh has had a new idea or thought through any of his own assumptions in decades. There isn’t a sign that he has the ability to be at all self reflexive. At least Brooks et al publicly air their intellectual grapplings and that kind of engagement with their own ideas is something we should be teaching our kids. Of course you should believe you can be right, but you have to also believe you can be wrong and that you can learn from others. Interestingly it’s THAT premise that has been labelled liberal and in doing so, too many of you have reduced conservatism to stubborness.

Go back to kos.

I think it’s hilarious that people just resort this event as merely “sitting down for dinner.” Like there was no ulterior motive on Obama’s part. You guys need to get a grip, or better yet, get a clue! :)

Again, you are not only silly, but you make an ass of yourself.
Savage is not a conservative. And Rush has plenty of new ideas. I don’t listen to him often, but I know that Operation Chaos was his!
Learning from others is not something that anyone looks at as Liberal or Conservative if they have any sort of intelligence.
The people I see yelling ALL the time are Liberals. The View gals, Matt Lauer, Olberdouche, Code Pink, Nancy Pelosi, “I’m trying to save the planet!”, The Global Warming scaremongers, etc.
Some of the right’s talking heads yell, but most are respectful during interviews, including O’Reilly, who isn’t really a conservative either.
I listened to Krauthammer not talk about the dinner on O’Reilly today. He wasn’t gushing, just said Obama is same guy that he always presents himself to be… A pussy!
Ok, he didn’t say he was a pussy…

Rush nailed it on his show today. These are DC establishment “conservatives.” The bastards that foisted John McCain on the party. There wasn’t a real rank-and-file conservative among the group. Just your normal crowd of DC country club “conservatives.” These traitors would be supporting most of the Obama agenda anyway since McCain was essentially campaigning on the same left-of-center agenda.
When the filthy Chicago bastard sits down on the record with Hannity, Ingraham, Limbaugh, etc. I’ll be impressed. But not when he sits down in the group that supported McCain and attacked Romney or Thompson as being too Christian.

Kudlow was pimping for the Big Bailout months ago. His interest is money — his Wall Street friends’ money.
I expect to see Jonah Goldberg breaking bread with Osama Obama next.
MrScribbler on January 14, 2009 at 6:13 PM
It’s just a dinner. It’s not that serious. Reaching out to the media. Nothing more, nothingless.
therightwinger on January 14, 2009 at 6:51 PM
Unfortunately, I think you’re right. He’s also very, very pro-illegal immigration to keep the supply of cheap, docile indentured servants coming to provide low cost labor, and was also totally in favor of the Dubai ports deal. For Kudlow, economic values trump all others.
thirteen28 on January 14, 2009 at 6:51 PM
Just saw Krauthammer. He said that Obama is reaching out. Really? It was off the record, which means not only did he not reach out to conservatives in general but he set you guys up for a fall that I don’t think we have seen since we cut McCain loose. What the hell are you thinking? He reached out to the individuals at your cocktail party - not to conservatives.
If you all agreed to the off the record meeting before hand, than you are looking out for yourselves and nothing else. Don’t you ever criticize “inside the beltway” fellas. Friggin cocktail party crowd throwing your used to be readers under the bus.
JeffinOrlando on January 14, 2009 at 6:52 PM
He reached out to members of the media. Not the media.
These swooning “reporters” acted like teenage little girls out on a date. They were just hanging out. It’s a friggin joke. This was the most publicized off the record meeting in history I think. Their editors should dock their pay for a day, at least.
JeffinOrlando on January 14, 2009 at 6:55 PM
This is simply “know your enemy and keep them close”. Fall for this sham at your own peril. He may impress a gaggle of “C” average journalist majors but thinking people will see him for what he really is.

We were sold out!
The Opinionator on January 14, 2009 at 8:08 PM
Gag me. Kudlow another faux conservative having an orgasm over The One.

OK. It’s confirmed. Obama can charm the panties off a nun. I’m thinking of the term ‘useful idiots’. Although I must say the Barone and Krauthammer bother me most. Sure. it wasn’t the time to be adversarial, but to be collegial, but I shall look at them with a new light going forward.
Mussolini was charming, too, as were many of the world’s worst dictators, criminals, and lower level bad guys. That’s what con men do. They create confidence.
pistolero on January 14, 2009 at 8:56 PM
Did Kudlow call Peggy Noonan a conservative?
Phildorex on January 14, 2009 at 10:52 PM
I guess Kudlow had his Fredo Corleone moment
joey24007 on January 14, 2009 at 10:55 PM
“Fiercest”? LOL
ddrintn on January 15, 2009 at 12:25 AM
Exactly.
I am hoping this is finally the end of The Far Right and The Far Left.
They need to go….they have way to much to say.
We’re not listening.
AprilOrit on January 15, 2009 at 2:23 AM
They just wanted to get to know each other a little bit over tea and crumpets. A week before the inauguration. Cuz BHO has nothing else really going on.
Major denial you two. But you aren’t listening. True liberalism.
LALALALALALALA, I CAN’T HEAR YOU!!!!
JeffinOrlando on January 15, 2009 at 3:13 AM
How in the hell do you call this reaching out when no one there is aloud to report any of the conversation? Sauerkraut has been on my shit list for some time now. He has forgotten who brung him to the party, CONSERVATIVES!!! Some one please tell me what liberals and all the left leaning MSM are going to do when the Messiah fails them by not delivering all that has been promised? With any hope at all we will see mass suicide of the leftist Kooks by jumping off buildings, I will be the first with a ring side seat and a bucket of popcorn…..
jkneer672 on January 15, 2009 at 6:28 AM
The absurdity of your “position” has been pointed out before. It is ludicrous and anti-intellectual to assume that a correct position is in the middle. The middle continually moves, as the left and right move. Ergo, you stand for nothing permanent or solid. Your “centrist” position today would be considered far left yesterday, and will be something else tomorrow.
Develop some firm beliefs. Once you do, you will find yourself constant, while the world whirls around you. It’s called maturity.

“Breaking bread” with Obama? I wonder if The One held the bread high above his head before he broke it and told his disciples “this is my body you eat”. Did he also give them his blood to drink?
