Obama: On second thought, it’s not that important to capture Bin Laden

Remember at the debate when he vowed, “We will kill Bin Laden, we will crush al-Qaeda”? He’s stressed the importance of taking out Osama on other occasions, but never quite as forcefully as that. Why, enter the quote in Google and you’ll find it immortalized in the very first hit with an especially fulsome tribute at the Daily Dish.
Anyway, change of plans:
COURIC: How important do you think it is, Mr. President-elect, to apprehend Osama bin Laden?
OBAMA: I think that we have to so weaken his infrastructure that, whether he is technically alive or not, he is so pinned down that he cannot function. My preference obviously would be to capture or kill him. But if we have so tightened the noose that he’s in a cave somewhere and can’t even communicate with his operatives then we will meet our goal of protecting America.
This is the counterterror equivalent of The One promising that he’ll save three million jobs: He “succeeds” merely by maintaining the status quo. If pinning down Osama so that he can’t function is the goal, the goal was met literally years ago. Cofer Black described Bin Laden as far back as 2004 as having been reduced to a figurehead whose operational role had been taken over by Zawahiri; NBC’s investigative team talked to intel officials this past summer and found that judgment still held. In a speech given just two months ago, CIA chief Michael Hayden described it this way:
Osama bin Laden is alive and “putting a lot of energy into his own security,” the director of the CIA, General Michael Hayden, said today…
Without directly referring to the CIA’s offensive blitz of unmanned missile attacks in the tribal areas of Pakistan, the CIA boss said the US had successfully isolated the al Qaeda leader bin Laden, referring to him in the present tense.
“He appears to be largely isolated from the day-to-day operations of the organization he leads,” Hayden said in a speech delivered to the Atlantic Council in Washington.
I.e. pinned down and unable to function. Ace wrote a shrewd post yesterday on the media lowering expectations for Obama by proclaiming that a build-up in Afghanistan would do no good when we’d been assured forever that only by redeploying troops from Bush’s war in Iraq could the “real war” be won. If you thought that volte face was egregious, just wait and watch them cover his ass on this climbdown. Exit question: Will the pass they give him extend for two full terms or will they nudge him a bit circa 2013 or so?
Update: Lest there be ambiguity, let me add that Obama’s totally right here. None of these turds will be safely neutralized until they’re dead or locked up, but if that’s impossible, he’s done his job by making sure they can’t operate. Oddly, though, the left never saw it that way vis-a-vis Bush. I wonder if they’ll see it now.

The Bush admin did the job on Al Qaeda. The media hasn’t reported on Iraq being a success and the decline in casualty rates. They are just waiting for Obama to be sworn in and then give him all the credit while our troops are withdrawing from the agreement that Bush presided over with Iraq.

Obama probably just found out at a briefing that the odds of Osama being dead are pretty high. There’s no political upside in finding a grave. Better to have him, still out there, but “bottled up”.

Indy928 on January 14, 2009 at 6:36 PM
Well, it looks like his speech arguing that we need to go into Pakistan to get Bin Laden and AQ is no longer valid. To wit, “The first step must be getting off the wrong battlefield in Iraq, and taking the fight to the terrorists in Afghanistan and Pakistan”.
Thankfully.
Y’know, we have a President that we know almost nothing about personally and know even less about what he plans to do. We’ve never elected a President in the modern history of that office that we know less about politically.
A complete crapshoot.
And thank you very much ladies and gentlemen of the press for your superb job covering him.

Ace is great on “lowering the bar” for Obama.
No. They’re all holding on to Obama’s other bar and their eyes are full of a viscuous substance.
I don’t care about Osama, as I’m of the belief he’s been with the ants for a while, unless you bring him to me. It’s just the election propaganda, versus now, and how it’s all overlooked when it’s the lefties’ cipher. Imagine the reverse.

Allah,
You Bush and Obama are wrong. think of OBL as the underdog team against the state champs. the longer the underdog stays in the game and makes the game interesting the more fans will be hoping they win in the end. thus the longer we allow OBL and his group to stay out there the more terrorist he attracts and the more people start believing in the fact that they can take down the USA.
that is one reason this war has gone on for 8 years now. Kill or capture the leaders and the fight ends. Simple really yet all these “smart” people don’t get it.
unseen on January 14, 2009 at 6:41 PM
Yeah, well Bush maintained that but it was never good enough. Osama must be captured or a confirmed kill only when Bush was president and anything less was a failure for his admin. I guess now that Obama is president Osama just isn’t as important anymore and that issue will be ignored like everything else that makes Obama uncomfortable.
Indy928 on January 14, 2009 at 6:41 PM
Maybe we can hope Osama chokes on a chicken bone at the dinner Obama invites him to.

I see a big downturn in our military and intel community’s moral under an Obama admin.
Indy928 on January 14, 2009 at 6:46 PM
Obama thrives on ambiguity and all his apologists insist on it. What Obama failed to explain (and you bought hook line and sinker in your Obama love) is the litmus test that “these turds” can’t operate. How do you measure something like that especially when your boy Obama is about to free all the terrorists being held at GITMO?
Seriously, preventing Bin Ladin’s operations is far more difficult than you military-hating leftists seem to comprehend. You can’t keep OBL tied up in that cave if you don’t have boots on the ground who have a general idea where that cave is located. This is all a continuation of the sham dialogue that you people engaged in to get this filthy bastard elected. Any terrorist action after 1/20/09 is blood on your hands for allowing this atrocity.

highhopes on January 14, 2009 at 6:49 PM
It’s not. He’s now set the bar to what needs to be accomplished in order to be a great President–and he doesn’t have to do anything since it already has been done but not acknowledged. At the end of 2009, or 2010, he’ll say he as isolated Bin Laden from his network, and the media will swoon over him for achieving such a large feat.
Enoxo on January 14, 2009 at 6:49 PM

fogw on January 14, 2009 at 6:50 PM
People fail to realize that as long as Osama is alive/ perceived alive Al Qaeda will be alive. He doesn’t have to be an operational leader or call any shots whatsoever. He is their leader regardless unless he is captured or confirmed to be killed. When that happens you can consider Al Qaeda finished for the most part. Any argument that killing Bin Laden would bolster Al Qaeda is useless at this point in the war.

So the media praises him for stuff they excoriated Bush for. It’s maddening, but so much better than if he actually did everything he said he was going to do.

You mean our troops, under President Bush and Vice President Cheney, did the job, despite efforts by Obama and his ilk to stop them.
Y-not on January 14, 2009 at 7:09 PM
Remember that debate when Obama said he would transfer troops from Iraq into Pakistan, even without the permission of the Pakistani government? Big ol’ tough-guy Barack!
He must have gotten a briefing from the Bushies about–well, ya see, Big Boy, let me ’splain it to ya, if y’all piss off the Pakistanis, they won’t let the supply convoys through to our troops in Afghanistan, who will run out of food and bullets, and be sittin’ ducks. Plus they might use their nucular weapons on us. Y’all better off sendin’ in drones and takin’ out al Qaeda when dey poke dey heads up.

Osama was killed in Dec 2001 when we did a massive bombing campaign in the Tora Bora region there. He was releasing a video 2 or 3 times a month before then and since that time there has not been a single verifiable one released. Problem is the caves he was hiding in that were bomb are at like 10,000 feet up and there is no way to get equipment in there to dig them all out to find the body.

What concerns me is that somebody like your son (thanks for his service in a tough community) is that mid-career professional that is irreplaceable if they decide to walk and I know many that would do so if Obama marches in and immediately tells the DOD that there is nothing wrong with openly homosexual troops. Navy ships, for instance, simply don’t have the space for the legitimaztion of devient lifestyles. It will only take Obama a few of these proclamations that are paybacks to the gays, Code Pink, and other military-hating groups to destroy the military entirely.

This is in line with John Brennan’s philosophy that if we just be nice to terrorists, they will like us and quit trying to hurt us. Brennan wrote extensively about how we should deal with Iran in a July 2008 article in “The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science” which you can download (link below) or if you Google the title of the article, “The Conundrum of Iran: Strengthening Moderates without Acquiescing to Belligerence.” It is unbelievable.
http://ann.sagepub.com/cgi/reprint/618/1/168
I see why Brennan withdrew his name – the Senate confirmation hearings for CIA director might have been brutal.
But as BHOs adviser on Homeland Security, he’s mighty soft on terrorists.

Katie the Genius Couric failed to ask a simple follow up:
If Bin Laden is alive, how will Obama be able to fully know that he is pinned down and unable to communicate with his operatives.
The answer is it is impossible. The only way to know with one hundred percent certainty is to capture or kill Bin Laden, that should be the only goal.

I hope somebody is keeping track of the George Bush position on a subject and Obama’s new postion on the same subject – and how much Obama concurs with Bush.
And then adding the negative comments from the press on Bush’s position on a topic and the glowing, positive comments on Obama’s opinion when his position is the same as Bush’s.
