I agree with whoever said it above–Nicholas Meyer was a huge reason ST2 was a success. The producers realized it too. This is evident by the fact they brought him back for 6. He knows how to tell a decent story. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that he’s a big-time Sherlock Holmes fan, too, which explains a lot of ST6. “The Seven-Percent Solution”–one of the best SH pastiches ever.

Star Trek II was one of my all-time favorite movies, ever. Ricardo Montalb(Kh)an, I’m gonna miss you. And as it so happens, I’m wearing my genuine imitation Corinthian-style leather accessories (toolbelt, keychain, …) in your honor today.

Let’s have no more “rich Corinthian leather” references. It’s been done, okay?

Agreed. No more use of the word “rich” in conjunction with Corinthian leather. (Mine isn’t particularly rich anyhow :-)

Watching that clip, Shatner looks like such a hack next to Montalban. Too bad they never were in the same scene together, Montalban could have showed Shatner how to act.

It was a sad day yesterday, in that we lost not only Ricardo Montalban, but another great character actor as well.

Patrick McGoohan, Number 6 of The Prisoner, and Agent John Drake of Secret Agent passed away as well at the age of 80.

Two greats in one day.

A sad day indeed.

The only reason why Shatner was good in Star Trek II (and later Star Trek VI) was because he was directed by Nicholas Meyer. In the director’s commentary of STII, he had mentioned that one scene was take after take after take until finally he got bored and just said the line the way the director wanted.

they don’t make ‘em like that anymore.

His acting made any movie better because he was in it.
