KHAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!

Simply the greatest Star Trek villain ever, and from all accounts, a charming and wonderful gentleman in real life, Ricardo Montalban has passed away at age 88. His long career includes an astounding 160+ appearances in films and television, mostly in children’s entertainment for the last few years. Even so, he will always be best known for two characters that became part of Americana — Mr. Roarke from Fantasy Island and Khan Noonien Singh from Star Trek: The Original Series and the movie Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan:
Ricardo Montalban, the Mexican-born actor who became a star in splashy MGM musicals and later as the wish-fulfilling Mr. Roarke in TV’s ”Fantasy Island,” died Wednesday morning at his home, a city councilman said. He was 88.
Montalban’s death was announced at a city council meeting by president Eric Garcetti, who represents the district where the actor lived. Garcetti did not give a cause of death.
”What you saw on the screen and on television and on talk shows, this very courtly, modest, dignified individual, that’s exactly who he was,” said Montalban’s longtime friend and publicist David Brokaw.
After Star Trek: The Movie, fans wondered whether any of the films would regain the edge of the best of the ST:TOS episodes. Montalban brought that much-needed edge to his appearance, and the rivalry between Khan and Kirk never really got matched in any of the subsequent installments. Montalban reprised his “Space Seed” role with relish, as we can see in this clip from early in the movie:
KHAAAAAAAAAAN! We will miss you, Mr. Montalban. Godspeed.

Estimado Sr. Montalban: Se que “Tatoo” lo recibio en el cielo, vestido de blanco como siempre, diciendole “Bienvenido Al Paraiso”. (Herve Villechaize also passed away, last year)
Que Descanse En Paz, departe de una nina que crecio viendo “La Isla De La Fantasia”.

Dear Mr. Montalban: I know that “Tatoo” welcomed you in Heaven, dressed in white as always, telling you “Welcome To Paradise”.
RIP, from a girl who grew up watching the Fantasy Island series.

It was a sad day yesterday, in that we lost not only Ricardo Montalban, but another great character actor as well.
Patrick McGoohan, Number 6 of The Prisoner, and Agent John Drake of Secret Agent passed away as well at the age of 80.
Two greats in one day.
A sad day indeed.

Oh, my. I did not know about either McGoohan or Montalban. So sad.

Good one, MarkTheGreat. :)
Let’s have no more “rich Corinthian leather” references. It’s been done, okay?
Watching that clip, Shatner looks like such a hack next to Montalban. Too bad they never were in the same scene together, Montalban could have showed Shatner how to act.
RIP and God speed, sir.

God is now making all of his fantasyies come true. Beginning with allowing him to walk again.
God Speed Mr. Montalban. Say “Hi” to John Wayne and Charlton Heston for me.

Another thing. A few years ago the American Film Institute listed its 50 greatest movie heros and 50 greatest villains.
Khan was one of the greatest villains.

Star Trek II was one of my all-time favorite movies, ever. Ricardo Montalb(Kh)an, I’m gonna miss you. And as it so happens, I’m wearing my genuine imitation Corinthian-style leather accessories (toolbelt, keychain, …) in your honor today.
Agreed. No more use of the word “rich” in conjunction with Corinthian leather. (Mine isn’t particularly rich anyhow :-)

Beautiful, John. I loved that man. Born to play the secret agent. God bless you, Mr. McGoohan.

I agree with whoever said it above–Nicholas Meyer was a huge reason ST2 was a success. The producers realized it too. This is evident by the fact they brought him back for 6. He knows how to tell a decent story. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that he’s a big-time Sherlock Holmes fan, too, which explains a lot of ST6. “The Seven-Percent Solution”–one of the best SH pastiches ever.
