Video: Freudian slip of the day

Slog through the interminable platitudes of her prepared remarks or WaPo’s joyless running account of the Q&A and you’ll see that this really was the most interesting thing said all day. Somehow the closing of Guantanamo and what it would mean for repatriating freed detainees — 61 of whom have rejoined the jihad at last count — didn’t figure into her opening statement. But this did:

Many significant problems we face challenge not just the United States, but all nations and peoples. You, Mr. Chairman, were among the first, in a growing chorus from both parties, to recognize that climate change is an unambiguous security threat. At the extreme it threatens our very existence, but well before that point, it could very well incite new wars of an old kind—over basic resources like food, water, and arable land. The world is in need of an urgent, coordinated response to climate change and, as President-Elect Obama has said, America must be a leader in developing and implementing it. We can lead abroad through participation in international efforts like the upcoming UN Copenhagen Climate Conference and a Global Energy Forum. We can lead at home by pursuing an energy policy that reduces our carbon emissions while reducing our dependence on foreign oil and gas—which will benefit the fight against climate change and enhance our economy and security.

The key soundbite was her endorsement of “smart power,” which is Obamaspeak for soft power. (“With smart power, diplomacy will be the vanguard of foreign policy.”) She has Gates’s and Mullen’s full support on that, first and foremost because it’ll ease some pressure on the already overburdened military. Iranians got into the new spirit of things this morning by torching photos of The One, at around the same time Biden was being lectured by Iraq’s Sunni VP about not being a Zionist stooge. Exit question: Can you feel the Change?

“With smart power, diplomacy will be the vanguard of foreign policy.”

I hope they’ve got a “Plan B”.

I know I’m pointing out what is obvious to everyone here, but this strategy plays right into our enemies hands. They like nothing better than to talk and talk and talk because it gives them time to build their capabilities and they know they’ll never hold themselves to any agreements they make with us.

How is that smart?

NoDonkey on January 13, 2009 at 9:38 PM

Let’s try to put things in a little perspective here. Do you REALLY think she can do a worse job than Madeleine Albright?

Not that it matters, though. From Obama’s perspective, competence is the last thing he wants in his appointees.

The Nation of Islam has a goal; and it’s not one that most American’s will be particularly happy with. The first round of Obama’s cabinet are there as sacrificial lambs to take the heat while our modern-day Nero performs his version of urban renewal.

And Hillary has a special place on the altar. Obama knows full well that his foreign policy will the most spectacular pyrotechnic display of his administration. And Hillary Clinton is right where he wants her to be when that happens.

So America is going to find a way to control the sun? …

Bishop on January 13, 2009 at 5:36 PM

Dead on!!

This “smart power” by the “smart ones” was preceded by having more than eight chances to take out Osama in the 90’s(including having him delivered to us from the Sudan on a silver platter)with nothing to show, treating terrorism with “police action” that allowed Al-Qaeda to grow to tremendous strengths while they bombed the twin towers,US embassies, and our battleships to name a few, creating the Gorelic wall that prevented US intelligence from stopping 9/11.
The “smart ones” also yelled and screamed about how dangerous Saddam was with his WMD’s/ties to Al-Qaeda and genocide eventually voting in 2003 to go to war. When it got tough, they sold out this country and stabbed our Soldiers in the back by trying to surrender and making up stupid conspiracy theories like “Bush lied”,”stole the elections”,”went to war for oil”,”outed Plame”,”Bush did 9/11″ and so on just to win congressional seats and pursue the White House.
Then the “smart ones” voted against the surge saying it would make things worse.
The “smart ones” said Shia,Sunni, and the kurds would never get along and be able to work together in a representative government.
The “smart ones” said Maliki was Sadr’s bitc# and would never be able to defeat him or his influence in Iraq.
The “smart ones” have been yelling about global warming and how dangerous it is despite none of their predictions,or bogus models coming true and scientist by the thousands are now calling it one of the biggest cons known to man.
The “smart ones” think high taxes, welfare, strict gun laws, throwing money at education, being easy on crime is the way to run a city.
New York,LA,Detroit,Chicago,DC,and many more cities and states that are run from top to bottom by democrats are broke, crime ridden, with terrible education standards and pathetic graduation results.

Liberals can pat themselves on the back telling each other how dam# smart they are all they won’t,but the facts on the ground and history show them to be nothing but idiotic failures.

Baxter Greene on January 14, 2009 at 12:11 AM

Enough with global warming already. Single digit temperatures tonight with highs in the single digits on wed.

Funny how the libs don’t hesitate to have the limo driver slow down the car long enough to yell at the rest of society to reduce our carbon footprint.

Environmental socialism, pure and simple.

Quotes From the NY Post

Some Republican senators boasted beforehand that they would grill Clinton about the potential ethical quandaries she faces as secretary of state while her husband’s foundation accepted donations from foreign leaders.

But one of them, Jim DeMint of South Carolina, turned into a lap dog after admitting that Clinton reached out to him beforehand – defusing a confrontation.

“I appreciate your call. It’s amazing what a little communication can so. So I feel better about you already . . . I have no questions about your integrity,” DeMint said.

Instead, DeMint threw Clinton a bouquet: “How do you see the role of the State Department in facilitating the good private-sector things that are there without trying to replace them and maybe without trying to manage them?”

Another GOP senator, Wyoming’s John Barrasso, threw another softball – he asked how taxpayers could get their money’s worth in allocating foreign aid.

Ha Ha Hillary showed da bums who’s boss!

I was going to ask if anybody challenged this woman. Not only did they not challenge her, they kissed her ass. These hearings are the first chances for the GOP to start using its testicles again and defending the USA from the looming disaster that is the Obama administration. And nothing.

I have never identified myself as a republican, only a conservative, a hard right wing conservative. I will NEVER identify myself as a republican.

Winning elections doesn’t mean that you can handle international and domestic problems the “smart way”,it merely means they they have ridden into the White House on voter discontent (that they had a hand in) and a lot of promises that they can’t keep.

But if you think that “Global warming” is our number one international problem then yea,you probably think they are
the “smart ones”.
Their idiotic stances on N.Korea,Iraq,Iran,Afghanistan,Vietnam,
Darfur,Rwanda,Israel, and the major cities that they run don’t impress me that their ideology “smart”.

Baxter Greene on January 14, 2009 at 9:15 AM

I want to see proof of Global Warming. Really. If they can’t prove it, I want to file a class action suit against Al Gore and any other politician that is pushing this socialist garbage. This is the biggest lie I can think of in my 45 years…………..

Being a Republican,I am not declaring we are the “smart ones” either up on the hill.

But we are not the ones going around telling everybody how smart we are with a pathetic track record of failure that the democrats have.

I do believe Bush has made mistakes(immigration,Myers, spending)but I don’t believe for a second that he is our biggest problem.
There is not a corner in congress that Republicans, democrats, and Independents can run to to avoid the responsibility of the sub-prime mess that has led to this economic meltdown.
This is not just an American problem though, this is going on from Europe to Asia.
There is plenty of blame to go around.
Unfortunately, some of the main players(Dodd,Barney Frank,Geithiner…) in this economic mess are in charge of fixing..ahh..I mean socializing it.
This combined with corrupt democrats being exposed on a daily basis and hearing that “Global warming” is problem No.1(so buy carbon credits to make Gore rich and watch us raise the hell out of taxes) leads me to believe that it is not going to get better anytime soon.

Count me in with you friend. The Republican party is in shambles and is full of weak, gutless, Dem-lites. Only a true, hard core, Conservative movment can turn America back into one Nation, under God… With the freedoms and Military might to stay that way… Return our schools, courts and Goverment back to it’s rightful owners. On GITMO. Capturing people in Afghanistan and releasing them in the U.S. doesn’t seem like a good plan, you know?

I think all U.S. military and intelligence units need to have an Egyptian or Jordanian MP along for the ride to accept prisoners.

Our only other alternative is to just not take prisoners.
