Oh my: Couric and Gibson were perfectly fair to Palin, says Huckabee

From what I can gauge of grassroots sentiment these days, this is tantamount to desecrating Reagan’s grave.
Evidently he doesn’t see the bias inherent in questions like, “What do you read to stay informed?”
There are a lot of X factors [about running in 2012]. Including his fellow evangelical Christian Sarah Palin. There’s a natural tension between the two, especially since Palin took the vice-presidential-nominee slot many predicted would go to him. Huckabee, diplomatic and biblical, says the Alaskan governor “energized” the party. I ask him if she was treated fairly by the media. “There were a lot of unfair things. Sexist things that would never have been asked of a male candidate.” He pauses. “Now I must say I did not think that either the Charlie Gibson interview or the Katie Couric interviews were unfair. In fact, if anything, Katie Couric was extraordinarily gentle, even helpful. [Palin] just…I don’t know what happened. I can’t explain it. It was not a good interview. I’m being charitable.”
He pauses. “I think it was overpreparation. She’d been hammered by McCain’s aides, ‘Say this, don’t say that.’”
Huckabee has met Palin a few times and talked to her backstage at the Republican National Convention.
“Did you give her any advice?”
“I didn’t figure that she was shopping for my advice.”
“But she sure was shopping.”
“Yeah,” chuckles Huckabee. Then stays quiet. I set him up for an easy spike, but he holds his tongue.
Even now, the debate is raging in Headlines over whether her point about being able to see Russia from Alaska was taken out of context. Exit question: This is at least the third time he’s taken a dig at her since the election. How worried is he about 2012?

Huck should be worried as he has all the appeal of playdoh.
25,000 aren’t going to show for a Huckabee rally, not unless St. Olaf can rouse himself to gather a boatload of his fellow skull-smackers to attend.

Sure, Allah, that’s exactly what some of us protested regarding those interviews. That question. It didn’t have anything to do with the selective editing, genuinely gotcha questions or condescending shots of Charlie Gibson sneering over his glasses.
As for Huckabee, I guess Ann Coulter was right after all.

This shouldn’t be any surprise at all. Shortly after the pick he said “I wasn’t vetted. But neither was Palin.”

Huckabee is done in the republican party.
He is beyond jealous. Now he is just kissing liberal and MSM butt.

What a whiner Huck is – boo hoo he didn’t get picked as VP so let’s snark at Palin and do it in a snide way. Personally I found him guilty of what the Left accuses the all the Right of doing – trying to shove religion down everyone’s throats. His addition to the ticket would have found me sitting at home on election day.
katiejane on January 13, 2009 at 2:32 PM
I see the traveling tent preacher, snake oil salesman elements in Huck’s approach to politics is still alive and well. No matter, all the tambourines and gospel music will still not win him the nomination in the future.

Vashta.Nerada on January 13, 2009 at 2:36 PM
I like both Huckabee and Palin. I might not agree with him about the interviews but I don’t see what he said as taking a shot at Palin. Almost everything Huckabee says gets put up as a headline on here…even little things like this. It’s probably smart on Hot Air’s part. The majority of Hot Air’s readers have a blind hatred for Huckabee so they’re just giving the readers what they want…red meat so that the readers can make intelligent comments and retorts such as ‘STFU’, ‘F*%!K HUCK’, ‘FU Huckster’, ‘Huckastupid’, etc. This is nothing new. I thought conservatives were better than this though. Can’t we raise our level of conduct and debate or are we (the readers and those who leave comments) just going be the flip-side of the Daily Kos? Also, I realize not everyone is guilty of this but I think we can all do better than this. And to be clear, I’m not saying that anyone has to agree with or even like Huckabee but I think we can do better than this.
keepinitreal on January 13, 2009 at 2:37 PM
Huck is showing his RINO (CINO?) heart when he joins the left in denigrating Palin. He fears her like they fear her. Go ‘Cuda! She’s doing nothing but her governor’s job yet she makes headlines — and of course she’s AP’s favorite

It will be interesting to see how this dynamic evolves. My harsh view of Huckabee hasn’t softened much since the primary, but if he is going to be a serious candidate, I’d like to see how he develops.
Is doing a self-referential talk show, and not actually serving in elected office, a good preparation for another Presidential run? He really didn’t end up being very competitive, in the end. Did he?
I think it’s obvious that his failure to push for the party left 3,625,000 conservative Christians at home on election day, and for this I don’t see much of an opportunity to warm up to him.
Jaibones on January 13, 2009 at 2:38 PM

Huckabee does not belong on a national stage. He is a passive-aggressive, hiding behind a folksy, good old boy veneer. His envy of other more-adept and accomplished political figures comes through between-the-lines in his remarks.
I certainly would not be unhappy if HotAir dropped all threads featuring him. He really is a distraction.

Sure, but it’s a “heroic” statement to the moderates and the left. McCain was the liberals’ favorite Republican, and he won our nomination. Maybe Huck thinks that’s key.
Either way, it feels a little spiteful, especially seeing as he went out of his way to say that.

How republicans voted in our republican primaries had absolutely nothing to do with who the ‘liberal’s favorite republican’ was.
wise_man on January 13, 2009 at 2:50 PM
Are the Republicans choices in 2012 really going to be Huckabee or Palin? If so, everyone should just save their money. Obama will win in a 1984 style landslide with the Republicans winning either Arkansas or Alaska, depending on who wins. I like both of them personally, especially Palin given her courage under tremendous (and unfair) fire by the media. But don’t we have more competent people to run on the Republican ticket?
We need a good conservative from a Blue State who has demonstrated a high level of competence in government and some other area, whether it is in business or in the military. We need candidates like Mitt Romney (business), Rudy Giuliani (prosecutor and business), Fred Thompson (lawyer and actor), or General David Petreaus (military).
And for those of you who think Romney is too stiff or whatever, you have never seen the man in action. When he ran for Governor of The People’s Republic of Massachusetts, he was brutally effective in taking apart his opponent, Jane Swift, even though Swift was running as the historic choice to be the first female Governor of Massachusetts.
If Romney had been running against Obama, while he may not have won given the tough circumstances for any Republican, he would have laid a lot more punches on Obama than McCain. And his campaign would have been much more organized than the McCain train wreck. (I should know; I was involved with the train wreck) Indeed, Romney would have run circles around Obama in the debates, especially on questions involving the economy. With the debate format, Romney would have peppered Obama with questions about the economy that Obama could not answer. He would have set trap after trap, forcing Obama to make mistakes that McCain could not force.
If the Republicans cannot nominate someone like Romney or Giuliani, they will lose in a landslide…Mark my words…

Couric questions? insulting to a governor of a state.
As Ann Coulter expressed it, while they were asking Obama things like “How would your parents feel if they could see you now?” they were asking Palin the equivalent of “What were the last 8 kings of Swaziland.”
I’ll bet even Obama did not know what the Bush Doctrine was, and would have balked at being asked what magazines he read to keep informed.
Actually, most magazines are old-stuff the minute they come out. They should have asked Palin what colunmists she read on the Internet…that makes more sense. What can you read in today’s magazines that has not been already said?
moonlighter on January 13, 2009 at 3:24 PM
Oh crystal ball – What does the future hold?
Sarah Palin will be a two-term Governor, serving the people of Alaska through 2014, and then enter the Senate by defeating Mark Begich (D-AK), up for re-election that year.
The economic recession will be an economic morass by 2012, bringing Piyush (Bobby) Jindal to the rescue. He chooses Mitt Romney as his running mate and chief economic adviser for the first term, but dumps him in favor of Sarah Palin for the 2016 re-election effort.
Sarah Palin will become a two term POTUS, first elected in 2020. As a two term governor and partial term Senator, “lack or experience” is removed as an issue.
Mike Huckabee will continue his losing streak on the national scene, even switching parties, but to no avail.

kcewa on January 13, 2009 at 3:35 PM
I actually agree with Huck that the Couric and Gibson interviews were not unfair to Palin. She did alright with Gibson and bombed with Couric.
What was definitely unfair to Palin were the rest of the drive-bys’ reactions to those interviews. When you listen to someone like David Shyster last week, the whole issue of Palin being unqualified or dumb or unengaged seems to be derived almost entirely from the Couric interview. As if her record in Alaska, her countless other interviews, and her many campaign speeches are rendered irrelevant because of one bad sitdown with Couric.
And that’s where the issue of unfair treatment and double standards comes into play. Because recall that Joe Biden had an equally embarrassing interview with Couric around the same time in which he spoke of FDR going on TV in 1929 to discuss the Great Depression with the American people. While this comment was derided by some in the media(mostly conservatives), it’s all but forgotten at this point. And it was certainly never used as undeniable proof that Biden was unqualified to be VP.
And we don’t have to go down the list of the many dumb things Obama said(i.e. 57 states, inflating tires, spreading the wealth, etc.). The media either ignored or made excuses for every one of those remarks.
As far as the topic on hand, Huck is running his mouth because he knows he has no shot at the nomination in 2012 and resents that Palin is about 1000 times more popular than him with the conservative base. To an extent, I can sympathize with him. Palin has millions of adoring and loyal supporters because of her success as a governor, her strong religious convictions and family values, and her ability to communicate effectively as a public speaker. Huck has all those strengths, yet no one seems to give a crap. It’s understandable why he’d be bitter.
Is the gap between their respective favorability ratings due to her attractive looks and his resemblance to Gomer Pyle? Maybe. We are a shallow society in many respects. I prefer to chalk it up to karma from his tagteaming with McCain to screw over Romney.
Doughboy on January 13, 2009 at 3:36 PM
While Huckabee is a social conservative, he was not a fiscal one. In fact, IF he were president elect today, I could easily see him planning out his own 2 trillion dollar bailout. In fact, his fiscal policies, or even McCains, would look just like the Bush/Obama solution. And yes, it will/would fail in the same way.
I think that by 2012 there will be many issues on the table that will prohibit a big government spender, like Huckabee, from serious consideration.
We just do not have enough information regarding Palin to make any kind of an evaluation of her at this time. The last election was about McCain policy and, by definition, all she said had to be supportive of his positions.
