Gay Episcopal bishop “horrified” at how “aggressively Christian” inaugural prayers have been
posted at 3:20 pm on January 13, 2009 by Allahpundit
Via R.S. McCain, rather than leave it to The One to invite a rabbi, imam, etc., to offer their own benedictions, he’s going to dispense with the whole Christianity thing and just cover all the bases himself.
Bishop Robinson said he had been reading inaugural prayers through history and was “horrified” at how “specifically and aggressively Christian they were.”
“I am very clear,” he said, “that this will not be a Christian prayer, and I won’t be quoting Scripture or anything like that. The texts that I hold as sacred are not sacred texts for all Americans, and I want all people to feel that this is their prayer.”
Bishop Robinson said he might address the prayer to “the God of our many understandings,” language that he said he learned from the 12-step program he attended for his alcohol addiction.
The current Anglican-in-chief has always seemed less interested in Christian doctrine than, er, “cultural understanding,” so ironically this is one instance in which Robinson’s something of a traditionalist. Exit question: Does he mean to suggest that he can’t relate to prayers by leaders from other faiths for Obama’s and America’s well being? Or is it that he can relate to them, but this multiculti street runs only one way?

How about those radical muslim beheading’s? Party or party not?
christene on January 13, 2009 at 8:02 PM
I think most Christians here are ‘horrified’ over this man being declared a representative of and for Christians.
If Obama picked a Navajo to sing praises to the gods of earth and air, I wouldn’t be “horrified” at all.
For you see, having someone pray is not the same thing as the government ‘endorsing’ a religion.

I apologize, but I’m not sure if you’re being sincere or not, lol. Y’know, alot of sarcasm around here. It’s hard to tell some times. If you are, then thank you very much, Jaibones. I appreciate your kindness.

Parents who engage in any behavior that weakens the family are working against Christ’s teachings. What I am more concerned about is the societal acceptance that homosexuality is normal and legitimate. Having Gene Robinson up there pretending to speak on behalf of Christians is an insult to ALL Christians. But, what do expect from a filthy bastard like Obama who spent the last 20 years in a church whose sole message was hatred of whites?

I think the Episcopal Church was deserted by God somewhere along the line. A “Christian” who utters a prayer that comes from some place other than his heart (i.e. a need for popularity among men) is going directly against, oh, I wouldn’t be surprised at a hundred separate statements given by Jesus.
Ryan Gandy on January 13, 2009 at 8:09 PM
Precisely. And the logical answer is that he is not a Christian.
apacalyps on January 13, 2009 at 8:11 PM
As a life long Episcopalian, I can only say one thing.
PUTZ
My religion has forsaken me. I wish I could be as forgiving as Jesus and say “forgive them Father for they know not what they do” but I think they know EXACTLY what they are doing.
jnelchef on January 13, 2009 at 8:12 PM
In this instance, I think the proper scriptural recommendation is what Jesus told His disciples to do when they went into towns to preach the Gospel and were rejected: brush the sand off your sandals and move on.

Robinson’s faith is an abomination of Christian theology.
Rovin on January 13, 2009 at 8:44 PM
This is always the asinine intention of this kind of nonsense, even though it has the opposite effect. Instead of being inclusive, it ends up excluding everybody who would actually care. Anybody unserious about religiosity probably doesn’t care about the prayer, and anybody serious about religiosity will not feel any kind of kinship with a catch-all “whoever may or may not be up there” prayer.
Lehosh on January 13, 2009 at 9:02 PM
Reminds me of the “prayer” offered by the officiant at my brother’s college graduation: Dear God, Allah, Buddah, and all other names by which you are known …” Hearing it, I was surprised he didn’t include, ” … if you are out there, and if you are listening, and if you care, …”

Folks, this really is a sad day. We have an openly gay bishop promising an un-Christian prayer at the inaugural ceremony for the next United States president — and he was invited by the next United States president Barack Obama! Stop and think. These headlines are more than just stories to entertain you. You are not watching a hollywood movie. These grossly unconventional events are actually taking place! Listen to me carefully, okay. God is real. He exists! “The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein” (Psalm 24:1). The Bible’s answer is considerably different than Gene Robinson’s and Barack Obama’s. Exodus 20:3 says, “You shall have no other gods before me.” The Bible says a lot of things, like, “Children, honor your father and mother.” If what I am telling you is true, that the Bible is true, then we are in a lot of trouble. God is the boss. He is the creator. Making Him meaningless is not a smart choice for the United States of America. Stop and think about the consequences. Terrifying thought. And the words you just finished reading here is more than just a story to entertain you.

“Bishop” Robinson is horrified with true Christianity. He is not a Christian. He is a bad “guy.”
The Episcopal Church is a dying denomination because of the likes of “Bishop” Robinson. It should die. The true Church of Christ will live.
Phil Byler on January 13, 2009 at 9:37 PM
Of course it is.
If the message of your church is that God tolerates pretty much anything, why bother getting your ass out of bed on Sunday to go to church? Why contribute to the church?
Might as well spend your money on wine, women (or men, in this poof’s case) and song then spend Sunday morning recovering from your hangover.
God’s peachy with you no matter what you do.
NoDonkey on January 13, 2009 at 9:41 PM
Give it a rest people. If Robinson was not gay this thread would not have more than 25 responses.
SC.Charlie on January 13, 2009 at 9:50 PM
That’s interesting considering that his homosexuality has hardly been brought up at all.
Religious_Zealot on January 13, 2009 at 9:53 PM
Including yours?
This guy is so proud of being gay he won’t shut up about it, I’m sure he just so adores the attention.
And if he wasn’t gay, he would be preaching to bums in a soup kitchen somewhere, because no one would care about him (including Obama), so how about you give it a rest?
NoDonkey on January 13, 2009 at 9:55 PM
Religious_Zealot on January 13, 2009 at 9:53 PM writes, “That’s interesting considering that his homosexuality has hardly been brought up at all.” I guess that you did not notice that the title of this thread is, “Gay Episcopal bishop “horrified” at how “aggressively Christian” inaugural prayers have been”.
SC.Charlie on January 13, 2009 at 10:08 PM
I’m a little weirded out that you agree with me. Don’t worry. I won’t hold it against you later.
Eh, that may have been true in the first two posts about him, but in this one I can promise you (putting my hand on a Bible if it would help) that people here would be just as outraged/annoyed (depending on the person).
Personally, I find it humorous. But for a supposed man of God to promise not to give a Christian prayer while lamenting that other Christians gave Christian prayers is quite… well, fitting actually, for Obama.
Then shouldn’t the offensive be that presidents have picked Christians to give that prayer, not that the Christians who were chosen decided to give a Christian prayer?
Logic is seriously missing here. You don’t have to be a conservative to see that.
For the record, I’d feel the exact same way if this was a religion not my own like Judaism. The person being asked to pray is asked to pray on behalf of his (or possibly her) religion. To then be horrified that people actually took that request seriously, is… kinda dumb.
I’ll try to come up with some knock, knock jokes.

Noneya on January 14, 2009 at 5:25 AM
So what do we teach that’s so poisonous? Forgiveness? Faith? Honesty? Freedom? Love? Service? Sacrifice? Giving? Charity? Healing? A loving God who gave his only Son to us to be crucified on a cross in our place as payment for our sins so that we might be saved from eternal death and all we have to do is believe in him? Eternal Salvation?
Sounds pretty awful doesn’t it?

Bigotry (towards gays), Greed (megachurches), Gluttony (Warren, Robertson, Falwell), Shame (Ted Haggard), Deviousness (Catholic church pedophilia cover-up)………
Noneya on January 14, 2009 at 6:29 AM
Bigotry? No, Noneya! It’s called sin! You can’t redefine something and call it a “lifestyle choice” and then call anyone who won’t accept it a bigot! We aren’t and won’t buy it! Sorry! It’s not hatred of gay people, it’s simply stating that the lifestyle and the acts that they are engaged in are sinful and they need to stop! They are not natural, they are not “born this way” and the whole thing is a big lie!
sabbott on January 14, 2009 at 6:37 AM
If a president asked a rabbi to say a prayer, I would hope that he would be proud of his faith and say a prayer from the Jewish tradition. Same holds true of an imam, or a Buddhist monk or a representative of Shinto or whatever.
It’s Robinson’s being ashamed of his faith that gets my goat.
Jesus said: For he that shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him the Son of man shall be ashamed, when he shall come in his majesty, and that of his Father, and of the holy angels.
Ellen on January 14, 2009 at 6:45 AM
Forgive me, but this is just further evidence that homosexuals are fundamentally counter-cultural rebels who are more interested in destroying institutions than in “joining” the mainstream of society. A (gay) “Christian” preacher ashamed of the Bible? C’mon.
This kind of thing just makes me take a hard look at the motives of homosexuals who want to (a) marry, (b) adopt children, and (c) join the military. Do they really want to honestly partake of those institutions, or are they simply looking to pervert them to stick it to the man?

…and the antheists do nothing but complain, whine, and feed at the trough of freedom that religion in the U.S. has brought them.
Atheists don’t feed the poor, take care of the abused, take care of the abandoned, don’t build hospitals.
The education that you so easily passed up, could have been yours, and it was provided by the faithful.
No, don’t blame the atheists, they haven’t done anything…you are the beggars of life, living off what the faithful has provided to you…and like most beggars you are never appreciated of what has been given you.
right2bright on January 14, 2009 at 7:57 AM
What a silly child. Go spout your ignorance in some Islamic country and see what happens. Among other things, Christianity promotes the freedom for you to say nonsense, if it doesn’t die here as it has in Europe. Then you will find out how religion truly poisons everything.

It is not shocking that Robinson would disavow the Lord. His unashamed embrace of a lifestyle of open homosexuality sets him in opposition against the God of Scripture. “If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.” (1 John 1:6) On the authority of Scripture, this man is not a Christian.

If they are PRACTICING homosexual Catholic Bishops, then they have broken their vows and should be removed from their positions if not altogether defrocked. Where does the moral fortitude come in when one is breaking their vows? I’m not even Catholic and I understand the fact that the church isn’t set up for civil disobedience. The American Catholic church is tainted enough by all the hypocrites who claim to be Catholic and then turn around and vote for an anti-Christian candidate like Obama without throwing in queer bishops who want to make a statement about centuries of church doctrine by coming out of the confessional.

Generic prayers acknowledge the Creator’s many gifts to us, and seek grace for the tasks ahead. A Christian bishop’s choice to be generic honors unity and extends respect to attendees who do not share the bishop’s faith tradition.

As someone who is probably considered a troll, let me jump in here. I would have the fairly brutal discussions on this board with my childhood friends, cause I know they wouldn’t dump me for what I’m saying. But I’ve moved several times, don’t talk to them much and frankly am just not sure about how some of my current friends (in Texas, yet) would take to some of my moderate (at least IMHO) views.
This blog gives me the chance for the give and take on topics that I used to have with my childhood friends. It’s good to test out your views and opinions and this blog does that.

Interesting how they get around that “no prayer in school” thing when it suits their interests.
Well, you don’t have to give to the Catholic Church, but when your local public school passes you the collection basket, it’s “give ’til it hurts” no matter how many times you’ve bent over and took it up the Hershey Highway for the good ol’ educrat union label and how poorly they’ve performed.
