Gay Episcopal bishop “horrified” at how “aggressively Christian” inaugural prayers have been

Via R.S. McCain, rather than leave it to The One to invite a rabbi, imam, etc., to offer their own benedictions, he’s going to dispense with the whole Christianity thing and just cover all the bases himself.

Bishop Robinson said he had been reading inaugural prayers through history and was “horrified” at how “specifically and aggressively Christian they were.”

“I am very clear,” he said, “that this will not be a Christian prayer, and I won’t be quoting Scripture or anything like that. The texts that I hold as sacred are not sacred texts for all Americans, and I want all people to feel that this is their prayer.”

Bishop Robinson said he might address the prayer to “the God of our many understandings,” language that he said he learned from the 12-step program he attended for his alcohol addiction.

The current Anglican-in-chief has always seemed less interested in Christian doctrine than, er, “cultural understanding,” so ironically this is one instance in which Robinson’s something of a traditionalist. Exit question: Does he mean to suggest that he can’t relate to prayers by leaders from other faiths for Obama’s and America’s well being? Or is it that he can relate to them, but this multiculti street runs only one way?

Be glad you are not in Europe, for people there are wising up to the sham that is organized religion and being religious is rightly mocked …….

LOL, and look where that’s got/getting them!! They couldn’t/wouldnt exist anymore without us and wont for long after us. That was rich.

Oh, and since they are being now overrun with Islam, kinda makes your point null , doesn’t it then?

Bending over and mooning them!

Has anyone else noticed how LITTLE press this is getitng outside the Net? A brief mention on Fox news–this just be front page right column…now THAT is even SCARIER as it is treated as not newsworthy enough for front page.

*shudder*

as for the xmas holiday, you know what i mean, we have the separation of church and state in this country…..

Noneya on January 14, 2009 at 2:43 PM

Yes, we’re not a theocracy, and that is a great thing.

I don’t enjoy being insulted just because of my beliefs in God, but I’d rather die than live in a society where you weren’t allowed to insult me.

Super, because you’re gonna have TONS to live for during the reign of Great Leader.

Meanwhile, like any beggar, you take what the faithful has given you, and take freely but give little if any back.
Atheists don’t feed the hungry, comfort the abused, house the homeless, atheists don’t build hospitals, successful schools. The first hospitals and eventually the largest hospitals for aids were Catholic built and sponsored…no atheist took in aids, no atheist took in lepers, no atheist flies to the worst slums in the world and provides free medical care…but they sure reach out the hand of a beggar when they need medical treatment, or an education, the atheists are glad to take, and take, and take, and never give…they are the beggars of life.
The freedom they so enjoy here, was bought by the blood of the faithful…but beggars never appreciate what is given them.

I am glad to be living here, it’s sharing this place with a bunch of religious bigots that I have the problem with, whether they are Christian, Muslim, Scientologist, whatever. as for the xmas holiday, you know what i mean, we have the separation of church and state in this country…..

Noneya on January 14, 2009 at 2:43 PM

Oh look, the bigot card! Quick, everyone feel sorry for the victim! /eyeroll

Some mean theist probably even *gasp* looked at you funny when you chewed them out for saying “God bless you.”

TheUnrepentantGeek on January 14, 2009 at 4:03 PM

…lemme get this straight….

…first, as an ordained man, he leaves his family for the sexual attentions of another man….

…then, he allows himself to be raised to the episcopacy, effectively rending not only his own church (some congregants of which, apparently, haven’t rushed head-long, lemming-like off the cliff of moral relativism), but the Anglican communion worldwide….

…then, this specimin objects to the Christian overtones of a prayer…given by an ostensibly Christian clergyman….

…how is this guy not labelled an apostate and laughted at whenever he shows up in his “via media” Angligan nightgown and pointy hat?

…it’s good that he’s in the Episcopal Church USA and not in a real church, the pronouncements and positions of which a thinking Christian might be mistaken for something to be taken seriously. This is the church, after all, which gave us all John Shelby Spong….

…there’s a bit of scripture that covers his “horror” at this multicultural attrocity:

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Romans 1:16

…Paul weren’t ashamed…I’m not ashamed…many here aren’t ashamed…apparently Bishop Robinson’s faulty wiring extends beyond his reproductive bits….

on the other hand if we were a muslim society we wounldn’t have the atheists around to be such pests….

On the other hand, we’d get more exercise, what with the stonings and all.

I love a good stoning. It really brings the community together for a common purpose.

Interesting how Islamists are the embodiment of all the vile traits western liberals accuse Americans of being . . .

. . . Yet somehow they escape any criticism, whatsoever, in fact, western liberals bend over backwards to defend them.

Not sure why that is . . .

The less Christian this country gets, the more I fear for my personal safety.

I’m sorry, but you are a fool if you think ridding America of it’s Christian heritage will make it a better, safer, a freerer nation. You are literally digging your grave with each letter you hit on your keyboard defending that idea.

Anna on January 14, 2009 at 5:41 PM

Yes. We’re all priviledged compared to most of the rest of the world and I thank God as often as I am reminded of it. But, I always hold out hope for you Anna. I’m praying that you don’t remain and atheist much longer and join us in heaven when that time comes, where the scene is infinitely more pleasing than anything you could imagine in America. Thank you.

“Bishop Robinson said he might address the prayer to the God of our many understandings”

As an atheist, I don’t worship any God. Why should this episcopalian bishop be allowed to FORCE his belief in “some sort of God” down all our throats.

I suggest he builds in contingencies for polytheists, atheists, agnostics, nihilists and people who’ve never really thought about it.

Perhaps some glib sentiment that makes to reference to religion or philosophy.
