As a Buckeye, I rejoice in this news. I cannot stand the man. He is the only elected official of this state who has never answered one letter and/or e-mail I have sent him. Not even a form letter. He is about as conservative as Arnold is. Good riddance.

Just received in today’s mail a letter from Voinovich, asking for help for his 2010 campaign, and adding that funds should be sent no later than 5 January 2009.

May have been sent before the Senator decided not to seek reelection….or maybe it is yet another sign of how poorly the Ohio GOP seems to be doing when it comes to a unified message.

In any case, he’ll get no money from this Republican.

Not sure what your joke means…the language is Tagalog, and I’m not sure I’ve ever heard Michelle speak it. I pretty much like the way everything sounds when she says it, especially when her interviewer is getting on her nerves.
At any rate, I don’t see Vagiovich as much of a loss. I’m surprised he’s retiring. I’m sure some of the moderates were hoping they could run him for President in 2012. Guaranteed to lose that one.

If Voinovich really had “fire in his belly”, he would have voted FOR John Bolton, who would now be boldly representing us in the United Nations.

Inside Ohio, Voinovich’s retirement is being seen as a good thing by conservatives. I don’t think this is a bad thing at all for the GOP, either. The grassroots here have not forgotten the Bolton fiasco and Voinovich would have likely shared a similar fate to Mike DeWine who was abandoned by the base for his critical role in the Gang of 14. People were so mad at DeWine in 06 that the campaign couldn’t get his signs distributed
in red areas of the state.

Perhaps most importantly, the retirement means that we will avoid a bloody and costly primary between John Kasich and Rob Portman for Governor.Portman is already aggressively courting conservative support for the Senate race, which pretty much clears the field for Kasich in the governor’s primary.

As far as Blackwell, there are many residual bad feelings left over within Ohio from his horrible performance in the 06 governor’s race. Notice that none of the Ohio delegation to the RNC have backed his candidacy. I think he would be a great RNC chairman, and that is probably the best place for him as far as Ohio is concerned.

Voinovich was starting to really show his age, which would have made it nearly impossible to mount the type of campaign necessary to win against either of his likely Dem opponents, Lt. Gov. Fisher or SecState Brunner.

All in all, good news for Ohio and the country.
