The Blago awards?

Andrew Malcolm reports from the &^%$ing Golden Globes award ceremony last night, or perhaps the Rod Blagojevich Special, as it turns out, on the peculiar strain of language employed for a televised event.   Instead of classy acceptance speeches fit for prime-time network broadcast, the winners of the awards instead indulged themselves in vocabulary that might have made Tony Soprano blush, at least around his family:

As our LATimes.com colleagues Rachel Abramovitz and Tom O’Neil note elsewhere on this site and elsewhere here, this year’s Golden Globe Awards by the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. had acceptance speeches that were full of words like $%&*(=^ and f!$*&-+. Also, balls, suck and suck it. So if you were among a majority of Americans who didn’t watch it, you might have missed something.

Apparently, some were surprised by the profanity production of the culture crowd.

But clearly the actors have been studying Illinois Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was caught on FBI wiretaps and not quoted publicly by that bleeping federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald. This was after Blago’s December arrest for, among other things, allegedly auctioning off his “<<&*%$# golden” nomination to fill the vacant Senate seat of President-elect Barack Obama, who’ll be inaugurated in just 8 days.

Mickey Rourke attained the evening’s height of wit by discussing “balls” in detail, and having his friend, director Darren Arenofsky, flip him the bird while on camera.  Tina Fey told three of her critics on the Internet to “suck it”.  And those were the printable quotes from Hollywood last night.

“What’s the big deal?” some will ask, and perhaps with some justification.  After all, most of use the exact same language in certain contexts.  I’ll be the first to admit that I swear like a longshoreman while driving in traffic, to the amusement of the First Mate, apparently a trait I got from the Admiral Emeritus.  If we all use this language, why get so uptight about it on television?

The difference is context.  There is a time and a place for everything, and prime-time television is the time and place to put one’s best foot forward.  Repeating the words “suck” and “balls” repetitively does not cast one in a particularly good light; in fact, it makes it look like such words form an altogether unhealthily high percentage of one’s total vocabulary.  Even middle-schoolers know better than to spew such language publicly, for Pete’s sake.  One might think that overindulged millionaires making their living in the public square would have been bright enough to at least understand that much.

We can laugh at Rod Blagojevich, but even the notoriously stupid Illinois governor knew better to talk like that at public events.  He and his lovely wife Gus — er, Patty — had to get wiretapped to be caught dropping effenheimers.  Hollywood stars only need a camera and some phony awards ceremony that makes them think they’re something a wee bit more special than they really are.  Which of the these are the idiots?

Here’s a handy hint: If you have to wear your tuxedo or formal evening gown — or if you have to spend more than $100 to get dressed for an event — keep your balls in your pants and keep the suck in your vacuum cleaner.

My wife made me watch the whole show…she’s in the biz. Not sure what all the disproportionate outrage is about. Couple of off color references to “balls” and “sucking it” was about the extent of the so-called “vulgarity”. Pretty classy affair. Lots of good movies and TV shows this year to chose from. Folks around here bashing Hollywood is about as predictable as the sun rising in the morning. Mix it up a bit, would ya. The predictability here at HA is starting to feel like Kos.

dakine on January 12, 2009 at 12:58 PM

Doesn’t this happen at pretty much every awards show now? Sally Field went off at the Emmys a couple of years ago all ‘gd wars’ and stuff. I stopped watching them a while back. I can’t stand to watch a bunch of rich people congratulate themselves for being so fabulous. I watched 24 instead.

Are you really one to talk?

Are you talking to me?

I was just elaborating on Kanda’s post – and pointing out examples there of. The vile name calling is up and running, loud and clear here at HA.

It’s amazing how Hollywood can drive the Coulter gang crazy. I guess Tina Fey said something that hit a major nerve somewhere on the Isle of Far Right.

Geez, since when did we start attacking actors and actresses, all good capitalists, btw?

Yes, and you have several examples yourself all over this blog, which was my point.

It’s amazing how Hollywood can drive the Coulter gang crazy. I guess Tina Fey said something that hit a major nerve somewhere on the Isle of Far Right.

Tone must be lost on you, as no one here seems at all more than peeved. This isn’t something that drives people crazy but rather something they discuss in earnest wondering how society can retain some semblance of class.

That talking about the crass behavior of actors is somehow seen as crazy surely says more about you than it does the rest of us.

Geez, since when did we start attacking actors and actresses, all good capitalists, btw?

AprilOrit on January 12, 2009 at 1:03 PM

Capitalists? In action but certainly not in what they promote and hope to change. They may be hypocrites, but that’s not something that should free them of criticism.

Esthier on January 12, 2009 at 1:08 PM

Esthier, did you watch the show? You make all sorts of generalized and sweeping statements about Hollywood and actors as if you know what you’re talking about. Seems to me that what you and others are doing is really just regurgitating talking points about the evils of the entertainment industry. Makes you look sort of foolish and uninformed. Try being original and thinking for yourself.

dakine on January 12, 2009 at 1:15 PM

Try being original and thinking for yourself.

dakine on January 12, 2009 at 1:15 PM

Right, cause your comments are certainly original.

Drop it. All I’m saying is that Hollywood has no class, and that it’s not the end of the world to recognize that.

Esthier on January 12, 2009 at 1:19 PM

Please Esthier. You say “Hollywood has no class” as if it’s some sort of monolith. You make my point about lack of original thought. There were many “classy” moments during last night’s show. You’re talking out of your hind parts.

Ever heard of live and let live – don’t like it – change the channel? It used to be and the last time I checked – the Democrats who were/are always complaining and trying to regulate and shut everybody down, what is happening to the GOP??

Since when do we complain about the most trivial crap like Hollywood while wondering how society can retain some semblance of class?

Let’s leave this to Al and Tipper Gore….

AprilOrit on January 12, 2009 at 1:26 PM

You make my point about lack of original thought.

I don’t understand the outrage against their language.

What I don’t understand about it is, it doesn’t matter, because people will watch their movies anyway, these foul mouthed louts will still get hired to pretend to be someone else while someone films them doing so, and they will still earn millions per picture.

If it meant anything to be outraged, then, go ahead and complain, but it won’t change anything. Foul language and bad behavior means nothing in the year 2009, unfortunately.

When homosexual “marriage” is being forced on the populace as “homosexual rights” and a “civil right,” and when people who oppose it are colored as the bad guys, as in “homophobes, bigots, haters,” and when abortion is considered a sacred right and those who oppose the butchering of living human beings who should NOT be slaughtered by abortionists are painted as haters, fascists, stupid, and so forth, when it is the other way around, and when attacking the president of the United States and demonizing our military is considered chique, and when condemning Israel for defending herself but having no outrage at Hamas, Hizbollah, al Qaeda, Taliban, and others for their violent, hate filled slaughter, bigotry, prejudice, and derangement, while the US is “The Great Satan,” how can a little cussing and foul behavior even move the needle on the Richter Scale?

dakine on January 12, 2009 at 1:25 PM

There were and there still are classy people within the Hollywood machine and there were some classy moments last night as well.

For starters Steven Speilberg cited Cecil B Demille – one of Hollywood’s all time famous Conservatives, noted for his Biblical epics and a long time contributor and member of the GOP – as his mentor. He cited the famous train wreck scene in the Greatest Show on Earth and how he reacted with his train set, shooting it with his parents old home movie camera.

Since when do Conservatives lump people into one box?

I refuse to play the jaded winer, unhappy, bored, looking for something to pick apart at every juncture while chugging my bottle of sour grapes.

If you are the type of person who is automatically going to write all of them off as vile Hollyweird, well you might as well throw in the towel, start building a bonfire and burning it all….

So what, it’s called free speech.

A few months ago we watched an old tape of Bill O’Reilly having a meltdown from the 80s ranting obsenitites as well.

Who cares, if you don’t like the movie, the language, their art, turn it off, don’t pay to see it, don’t go to see it, turn the channel, don’t buy their records, tapes etc.

AprilOrit on January 12, 2009 at 1:45 PM

I haven’t seen anyone call for regulation. What I have seen is people using their own free speech to discuss the low and undignified behavior of people who contribute to our culture. There is no such thing as “turning off” the culture–telling everyone to ignore it is like saying, “If you don’t like the air, put on a gas mask.” Those of us who object to the ongoing coarsening of our society have both the right and the obligation to speak up, or those who insist upon coarsening it (all this envelope-pushing) will continue unopposed.

DrMagnolias on January 12, 2009 at 1:53 PM

I didn’t watch because there are so many self-aggrandizing awards shows anymore that they’ve all just become tedious for me. I usually wait to read whether my favorite this or that won (like “Mad Men” — yay!) and then I go track down the YouTube clip if I am interested.

Using language like “suck it” or “balls” doesn’t bother me nearly as much as when actors use their acceptance speeches as a political platform, bashing the president, bashing those of us in flyover country, bashing the war and the troops. That kind of stuff I have no tolerance for. Tina Fey telling her critics to suck it? Eh — not such a big deal.

Anyway, isn’t the Golden Globes one of those awards shows where the attendees are seated at tables (and therefore are probably imbibing beforehand?). In my experience, that format always lends itself to more colorful turns at the microphone. ;)

Any attacks in her direction are brought about by her own behavior and a challenge to that original behavior, as I was doing.

Interesting how Ann Coulter makes a living attacking others, like Tara Reid, a D list Hollwood actress.

When actors and actresses start attacking Ann Coulter, let us know.

AprilOrit on January 12, 2009 at 2:03 PM

If the Hollywood crowd doesn’t have a script in front of them, all they can do is curse and rant incoherently about the evils of the Bush administration.

Watch them make off the cuff remarks in an interview. They sound absurd.

They are so predictable at this point.

I didn’t watch the awards show. I figured it would mostly be an Obama love-fest so I passed. Plus, I never see movies that are nominated anymore because they usually stink.

I never watch those cocksucking award ceremonies, anyways. If they start telling themselves what the rest of us think of them, maybe their salaries go down. It’s much cheaper on the street for what Hollywood’s selling.

Sorry. I forgot a few … add to my list above, if Rachel McAdams and Gabrielle Union are not among those receiving awards, then what’s the reason to watch?

William2006 on January 12, 2009 at 2:13 PM

April, any attacks on actors and actresses are brought on by their own behavior. If you feel Ann Coulter’s behavior qualifies her to be attacked than the same applies to the people of Hollywood.

Rose on January 12, 2009 at 2:14 PM

AprilOrit,

I have watched and heard Hollywood celebrities launch hate filled diatribes toward Anne Coulter for years.

It is clear to me that they learned to hate her by word of mouth, as what appears to be a majority of Hollywood celebrities tend to do, decide on something based on what their closed circle of cultists think and say.

William2006 on January 12, 2009 at 2:15 PM

AprilOrit on January 12, 2009 at 2:09 PM

Those definitions of low and undignified don’t differ as much as you might think. There is all sorts of research (including opinion polls) that indicates tremendous concern among the majority of our society about rudeness, vulgarity, etc.

And you are correct, I did not watch the show–first, I have seen enough of these types of shows to know what to expect, and second, I have read the various reports of this show and have no reason to believe those reports to be false.

I can’t tell you enough of what a farce all these awards shows are.
If there is anything these arrogant, self-centered, nracisistic know-nothings of Hollywood don’t need, its these awards to further inflate their overinflated egos!
What a waste of plastic, or whatever these statuettes are made of.
Surely there’s someone out there who can claim that the manufacture of these causes global warming, if not all the hot air produced by their arrogant acceptance speeches, and then put an end to these things!

I haven’t seen an awards show since Titanic won its oscars. Actually, aside from American Carol, Titanic was the last movie I paid to see. Hollywood gets more and more “suckish” (to use their own lingo) with every stupid movie they make.

Ever notice how they use so much CGI these days, there’s really no use for actors anymore? They have to put so much technocrap in movies, they relentlessly just permeate your senses until you can’t think anymore.

I’ve graduated myself to watching movies from the 1930s-50s on TCM. I also find myself continually tuning in to I Love Lucy, because they are able to make you laugh with lighthearted innocence, not constant sexual innuendos.

I didn’t comment on this show. I commented on Hollywood. No, I didn’t watch the show and never claimed or even pretended that I did. I didn’t even know it was on last night until reading about it here, and except for learning that Mickey was recognized for his amazing job in The Wrestler, I can’t say I care much about awards shows like this.

AprilOrit on January 12, 2009 at 1:45 PM

Esthier on January 12, 2009 at 2:27 PM

April, Ann writes a book you and others don’t agree with and you feel justified in criticizing her, Hollywood makes movies and actors speak in a manner that others don’t agree with and you don’t feel that they have a write to criticize? Don’t you think that is a little, shall we say, hypocritical?

I personaly haven’t watched an awards show in many, many years and here’s why:

1) It makes me want to smash my big screen when these pampered idiotic ingrate dolts whine about how terrible the US is while raking in millions and living more lavishly and freely than most people on the planet!

2) Just how many awards shows do these meglomaniac ingrates need anyway! What award show is next, Our Shiite Don’t Stink Awards? I guess that wouldn’t be a good awards show since they’d all get awards because according to the Hollywierd crowd their Shiite don’t stink!

Seriously, in how many ways can these meglomaniacs pat themselves on the back trying to prove to the world (but mostly prove to themselves) that they are “God’s gift to the world” and we should bow to them?

In fact I’m surprised every actor, producer, and director in Hollywierd doesn’t have a broken arm or dislocated shoulder from patting themselves on the back all the time!

Dis-gust-ing!

Esthier on January 12, 2009 at 2:39 PM

I don’t know, I’ve never heard them complain about those ads. Maybe it’s because middle-aged social cons are the biggest buyers of those pills? Maybe it’s just so much easier to rail against evil liberal Hollywood then those big capitalist pharmaceutical companies?

Noneya on January 12, 2009 at 2:49 PM

I’ve heard a number of people complain about those ads.

Maybe it’s because middle-aged social cons are the biggest buyers of those pills?

Noneya on January 12, 2009 at 2:49 PM

You think social cons use them more than liberals? That doesn’t really stand to logic.

And I didn’t realize you meant those commercials. They’re far from overly sexual. They’re usually far more tame than your average soap commercial, and they use clinical names instead of words like boner.

What’s there to complain about? Kids who are too young to hear about it won’t understand it anyway, which is usually the whole point.

And I don’t see what’s so evil about pharmaceutical companies helping people with E.D. get sex. Is there supposed to be something wrong with that?

St. Olaf believes that. He also believes Mary was a virgin her entire life.

Most people don’t believe that, and the blue little pill isn’t just for people who are too old. Plenty of men who are still in their prime have “dysfunction” issues.

Of course you are. Your opinion of religious people is certainly no secret.

But what cherry picking are you talking about? What in the Bible or anything else dealing with religion (I assume you mean one specific one, as they don’t all agree) would imply that sex is procreation and procreation alone?

I understand that some interpret scripture that way, but the hundreds of different churches should easily explain that people differ in their interpretations with great frequency.

Esthier on January 12, 2009 at 3:13 PM

April, any attacks on actors and actresses are brought on by their own behavior. If you feel Ann Coulter’s behavior qualifies her to be attacked than the same applies to the people of Hollywood.

Rose on January 12, 2009 at 2:14 PM

Their own behavior how?

Making movies you disagree with?

Ann Coulter doesn’t just write books people disagree with – she outwardly attacks people on TV and in writing. Calls them out like say the Jersey girls or Tara Reid.

How does making a movie or starring in a movie you disgree with compare?

AprilOrit on January 12, 2009 at 2:20 PM

Are you that out of touch with what goes on in Hollywood circles that you believe they do not ‘outwardly attack’ people or ‘call them out’? Have you seen the numerous actresses who have attacked Sarah Palin? How about the way Mel Gibson was treated? How about the way that moron from England, Brant or something, while emceeing an award show, mocked the young people for wearing chastity rings?

This isn’t about the movies they make (even if many are crap). It is about them using their fame and the platform the media gives them to push their agenda, particularly to the young and impressionable ( and stupid) who idolize them. It’s about the sleezy escapades of Britney, Paris, Lindsay Lohan… Or Ashley Judd *spits* pushing abortion at rallies…

And no, I don’t want the Government to regulate their free speech, but I sure as heck plan on criticizing moronic actors and actresses every chance I get, in addition to boycotting their films, not buying the stupid publications that promote them, etc. It is my RIGHT to do so.

Noneya, I complain about those all the time in real life, but there hasn’t been a thread on them in which to do so, that I have seen. If there was, I’d have posted. My 8 year old loves sports, but I have to quickly change the channel half the time for the crap they put on in commercials even during the middle of the day. Then there are the TV shows we record that are actually okay for children to watch but the commercials are atrocious. It’s either graphic tv and movie trailers, or the stupid ED ads which frankly, I don’t even want to see. (If you have a problem, talk to your doctor. Really, you’d think my husband was the only man in America without ED as many different pills and ads there are for it…sheesh), or worse, male enhancement…ugh!

There, I complained about it.

pannw on January 12, 2009 at 3:14 PM

chunder, the irony and hypocrisy of your posts on this subject is striking. You’re a tool, but a self-aware tool, so you have that going for you, which is nice.

esthier, you spout dogma. “Hollywood” is not some monolith. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

dakine on January 12, 2009 at 3:15 PM

Not all but most Hollywood people seems to be a strange mixture of outrageous egos and unbelievable insecurity. I do enjoy some movies mostly the old one from the 1950’s and back. Most cases I rather read a good book. And I think English actors are far superior to any American ones.

But I don’t think any of them are worth millions of dollars or deserve the god-like worship people give them.
And I think most of them are well…pretty dumb, every listen to them talk without a script…just repeating what others in their circle say just so they can remain the “in-crowd”.

mag5435 on January 12, 2009 at 3:16 PM

Seriously, in how many ways can these meglomaniacs pat themselves on the back trying to prove to the world (but mostly prove to themselves) that they are “God’s gift to the world” and we should bow to them?

In fact I’m surprised every actor, producer, and director in Hollywierd doesn’t have a broken arm or dislocated shoulder from patting themselves on the back all the time!

Dis-gust-ing!

Liberty or Death on January 12, 2009 at 2:39 PM

A lot of industries have annual awards. The entertainment industry is one of the few where a large audience will tune in to watch. Are the stars self-involved and high on themselves? Yes, but they are encouraged by millions who adore them.

Hollywood is a monolith. It is a liberal one. The few outspoken conservatives are older, more established with their own fan base. But how many up and coming conservatives are there in the industry?

Rose on January 12, 2009 at 3:40 PM

Actually, “An American Carol” had the funniest spoof of a Hollywood Awards show I’ve ever seen. While the announcer is droning on about Hollywood seeking ways to help the poor and curb overindulgence, hard working waiters are putting huge lobsters in front of Hollywood fat cats dripping with pearls and diamonds.

That movie was hilarious. We still quote it around the house and plan to buy it when it comes out. “Office Space” was a bomb at the box office too, but it’s one of our favorite movies now.

Profanity is the refuge of the ignorant. I tell my kids that if you use a curse word, you’re proving that you’re too dumb to think of a really great insult.

bonnie_ on January 12, 2009 at 4:02 PM

I suppose one could argue that the lack of class reported here (I didn’t watch the show…never do) was in fact not an act or done “on purpose”. Maybe it was the best behavior that could be exhibited by those in attendance.

dedalus on January 12, 2009 at 3:17 PM

I agree, they are encouraged by the millions who adore them, and IMHO most of those millions are the shallow pop-culture minded people of the left. I understand many industries have annual awards, I’m in the Environmental, Health and Safety Field and there are awards for individuals, companies and/or entities who did the most to promote achievements in the field, however I find people dedicated to actually protecting people, the environment, and property much more worthy of accolades than these ingrates!

As I asked in my previous post, just how many award shows are enough for these meglomaniacs?

Lets see, they have:

SAG (Screen Actors Guild Awards)
The Oscars
Emmy’s
Kennedy Honors
People’s Choice Awards

I think I’m missing a couple, can anyone help me out? Even with just the five above noted award shows that’s an awards show every 2.4 months if averaged over a year…this just proves they need to get over themselves!

I just got my free copy of the DVD last week from the American Carol Production company. When you watch it next time look under the special features and click on the “special thanks” section and you’ll see my name listed there (Frank P).

esthier, you think I had nothing to say in this thread because what I did in fact have to say wasn’t in line with the dogma you expect on this site. Typical fundamentalist thinking. The entertainment industry puts out copious amounts of content, and there’s something out there for just about everyone’s tastes available on a multitude of platforms. You’re seeing what you want to see (or what your told to see).

That you don’t see yourself as your own fundie version, is even further proof.

Again, you’ve yet to say anything new since your first post in this section. It’s all been, “esthier, you’re a stupid sheeple. I don’t need to prove myself. My word is enough.”

You just proved it once again. If you had anything new to say, surely you would have imparted your knowledge on the rest of us idiots. Instead you went straight back to your talking points.

I just remembered another awards show, The Golden Globe Awards, so in an average year there’s an award show every two months…like I said, I’m surprised there aren’t more broken arms and dislocated shoulders amongst the Hollywierd elite for all the patting themselves on the back they do SIX times a year!

Liberty or Death on January 12, 2009 at 4:31 PM

patting themselves on the back they do SIX times a year!

Yeah, I think there’s a couple of months in the year where we’re actually free of awards shows. That must be the two months all these “talented thespians” travel abroad.

And each year at these award shows, the actresses’ dresses get skankier, uglier, and more see-through. And their lips get bigger from the lipo. And the speeches get raunchier.

AprilOrit on January 12, 2009 at 1:45 PM

I hate this argument (i.e if you don’t like it change the channel), and the derivations of it you’ve used in earlier posts because it does not address at all the fact the public airwaves are being used. I did not watch the Globes and I am not at all qualified to comment on them. But to say that a public resource should be ungoverned is silly. In that case, a municipality should be able to run sewage in an open ditch by your house. Just tell your kids not to play in it. Don’t like the smell? Eh, some people don’t mind it that much. The only difference is the attenuation of the harm. I have no problem with cable TV, btw–they can do and say what they want. People pay for that service directly. But when you are talking about a common resource like the airwaves, and a large number of people are disenfranchised from using it because of rampant vulgarity–there’s a problem. Also, when you have to remind everyone you’re a conservative or of what you think conservatives believe in every post, it kind of leads me to suspect you’re a troll. Just sayin’.

Since when are Hollywood movies subsidized by the Government?

Technically the public airwaves are not being used, the Weinsteins are whomever distribute them to movie houses – these days owned by corporations. We pay to see them.

And regarding those airwaves – that is the exact same arguement the Dems and Chuck Schumer are using to reinact The Fairness Doctrine. They believe Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Michael Savage are vulgar, Schumer likens their shows to pornography.

And whether you think I am a troll – well you can think whatever about me, I could care less.

I am a Republican, not a social con like most of you here. If that translates into troll, whatever.

I’m sure it does based on the ahte for both Huck and Senator John McCain on this blog.

Black lists have come and gone throughout Hollywood’s history, as we all know. Sean Penn’s father was blacklisted as was Joseph Mankiewicz, Gale Sondergaard & Herbert J. Biberman to name a few. For heavens sake they even went after Lucille Ball. Some of them were really not allowed to work for years – they were prevented from making a living in the industry.

Today there are many conservatives working in the industry such as Robert Davi, Kelsey Grammer, Patricia Heaton, Gary Sinise, Joel Surnow etc.

You are certainly not comparing the Red Scare – that happened in the 1950s – to today’s entertainment market, or are you?

I have never met Senator McCain, but I have met Governor Huckabee and I felt he is a man with good spiritual intentions, he has God on his side, which was good enough for me.
