There’s a lot of reasons to be furious with Bush, but this moment isn’t a reason to “hate” him. I do have to wonder if he realized, right after he did the fake “whiney voice”, how much material he just gave the late night shows. What’s going to infuriate me is if they portray it dishonestly, and act like he wasn’t doing it in a way to mock such behavior.
Great, just great, we get to have an “historic moment” because a black guy got elected as POTUS.
Never mind that Obarfa is a stone-cold tyro in every sense of the word for this job….he’s BLACK, so just concentrate on that as you line up for your daily soylent wafer.
Can I still be conservative if I don’t hate Obama?

Yes. Bush talked about how “the GOP must be more inclusive” and then went on to say that Republicans are viewed “fairly or unfairly” (his exact words) as being anti-immigrant (forget the distinction between illegal aliens and immigrants, as that seems to have totally disappeared).
But I recommend you see the clip yourself instead of taking my word for it. I remember it from seeing it live, but I think the other Bush press conference thread here has that part.
I think some of y’all are missing the point – he was talking about how happy some people were to see the election of a black pres, not that some other folks were bigots about it. Try watching it again.
Personally, I think a lot of people missed MLK’s point about race, namely that it simply shouldn’t matter in how you deal with other people. The bigot part was connected to his talk of illegal aliens and the GOP, not the black Precedent part. He didn’t say bigot, but what he said was the same as what he heard during the shamnesty debates, when people were more explicit.
Yeah, I’m sure Obama DOES love his wife and daughters, but what about MY wife and daughter? And YOUR wife and daughter? Will he keep them safe the way Bush has? Or will he open up the flood gates of London-Madrid-Bombay-style attacks against us because he’s is preceived as weak by the jihadis? That’s all that matters.

Yes I do recall hearing that. Nice words taken back.
It seems as though the pro-illegal portion of the GOP has taken a cue from the Left: by pretending that the modifier illegal doesn’t exist, they can make it appear as if the rest of us are bigots.
I know that some of you will say “well he has protected us from the Islamic terrorists for the last 7 1/2 years.” Well what about that southern border? Are you paying attention to what’s going on down there? What about protection from the anarchic state that is Mexico? What about protection from the narco-terrorists? The president dropped the ball there. :(
I understand what he’s saying, even though I think he’s a nitwit for thinking and saying it. Racial politics infects a lot of people, mostly liberals, and I’ve always thought he was more liberal than conservative.
I just finished the press conference and you are putting words into his mouth and find that unseemly. He said the GOP (which is a part of, don’t ya know) needs to be careful of the perception of being anti-immigrant. He did not call the GOP bigoted.
Why are so many here loyal to Bush but hate McCain? They’re the same person. And frankly Bush is more at fault for the Socialist-Elect than McCain. Not even any combination of Fred, Romney, and Palin would have won the election this year because of the damage to the Republican brand over the last 4 years.

Well thank God he doesn’t have small children at home who need him to be a parent first and a President second; what an unthoughtful cretin Obarfy is for doing that to his kids.
I still don’t get the racial stuff with Obama, he’s half-white for one thing. Grew up with his white grandparents and went to privileged schools. Exactly where is the Street Cred here?
Yep. Well … We are through the looking glass, now. And it’s only going to get stranger.
I was trying to say nice things about Bush yesterday (as I genuinely liked the guy and appreciated the good things he did) but this press conference was just too much for me.
My goodness! So the current president can’t say some nice words for the incoming president and how much he loves his family without being accused of being a full fledged supporter. What did you want Bush do? Slander Obama on national television? What’s wrong with you?

Two things:
1. Almost all black Americans have some white blood–even those for whom it might not be visibly obvious (like me).
2. Don’t get caught up in the bogus idea that some sort of phantom “street cred” has anything to do with being black. The idea is a subset of Leftism. Don’t adopt it.

He earned that cred by soaking up racist propaganda from the white commie grandparents, his Che-wanna-be momma, muslim father and step father, radical friends, and crazy-ass preacher.
Don’t mind me. I’m mean, just ask Michelle about that.

Go back and listen to the “fairly or unfairly” part. It’s pretty clear what he was saying. But, I am putting words in his mouth that he did not say (with my bigot reference). I readily acknowledge that. If you go listen to Lady Lindsey’s “shut up all the bigots” remarks and compare them to what Bush was saying you’ll see where I made the leap.
I understand if you disagree with me, but there is no doubt in my mind.

Like I said (and what you said)–”street cred” is a subset of Leftism.
The fact that the word “illegal” hasn’t come out of GWB’s or McCain’s or Graham’s mouth in years with regard to this topic makes your summation correct.
Ergo, the foot maladies you describe were probably due to the extra wear and tear on your feet from walking, all because of Bush’s fascist Nazi scumbag Vice Chimperator raising oil prices.
You see….everything, yes I said EVERYTHING, is Bush’s fault.
Thanks, baldilocks. Others disagree, but that just puts us right back to where we were during the shamnesty debate. They have learned well from the left – abuse/manipulate/destroy the language first, and then the ideas will fall in kind. It won’t work, though … at least I hope it won’t. But we’re all going to find out fairly soon, as this insane Congress gets to work on a new amnesty. Oh well.

Of course they’re lying. First McCain and now Bush. They need to tear them down, assume the worst and not give them the benefit of the doubt. This is disgusting behavior and it has been the near exclusive domain of the left.
It’s sickening to see people from our side using the left’s tactics against our own. You people disgust me.
Lady Lindsay Graham, speaking to La Raza, announced at the end of his speech that, “We’re gonna tell the bigots to shut up.” Go listen to his whole speech (given to “The Race”).

Yes, I explained that. I am willing to make the leap to tie the two similar lines of reasoning (and the intentioanl abuse of the word “immigrant” to try and confuse people) together. You disagree. People can make up their own minds about what Bush was saying. But his talk of the need for Republican inclusiveness (as if conservative values should be identity-adjusted) made it all very plain. The “fairly or unfairly” should really seal it, but everyone will decide for himself/herself.
Senator Lindsey Graham is not in the linked video. Bush is speaking, and he’s mentioning Obama in ways that have absolutely zero to do with what you, baldilocks, progressoverpeace, madmonkphotog and anyone else in their demented minds is trying to connect to Graham.
Maybe we should all talk about how wonderful Bob Barr is. I get the feeling that the crazy here always comes back to idiotic comments such as ‘we need to destroy the GOP and start again’ or whatever this BS ends up as

You can talk about whatever Ed, AP and Michelle allow you to talk about here. Good boy! Sic him Fluffy! :-)
Seriously, during Katrina, a lib co-worker of mine looked at the mess on tv, the flooded streets, people on rooftops, the looting, etc and actually said those words “Phuqqing BUSH!”
and now you all want to tear down Bush for the same reasons you had to do the same to mccain. As I said on a previous page:
It’s too bad that so many people here want so bad to trash him on the way out, with out regard to the facts. I don’t appreciate what they are doing to another human being, another republican and a small c conservative, and yes, he is a conservative. Because if they feel so free to do this, then who else will they trash next time? What other republican will be the focus of the hate from this site without any regard to the facts. And as I have mentioned, the facts are that McCain has never said anything negative about Palin, and Palin have never had anything but praise for McCain. Now that Palin is free of this supposed evil man, she could set the record straight and trash him if she beleive that any of this was true. But she hasn’t.
… and now you people feel the need to destroy bush. Lie about him. Trash him. dig up some quote from some other hated republican from a year and a half ago to connect this to Bush’s comment today.
My God, the truth isn’t something that you care about, is it? Worse than liberals
I want a half-refund from Bush because he only did half of the job of the presidency.
He forgot the “explain yourself strongly and often” part.
(Permitting himself to be puppetized for 8 years by hostile yahoos… without much of a peep.)
As well as overlooking the “hold state functions to schmooze with the influential and demonstrate the crucial value of social contacts in a political system for building alliances to promote your agenda“.
Go ahead, and find the “perfect person”. Have him run for office. Do you think he’d get elected? First off, he does not exist. Bush was flawed, yes, but far less than most men. Could you have stuck to your principles as strongly as he did, with the pressures you know he was under, not to mention the pressures you don’t know about? I somehow doubt that…have you ever bounced a check or gotten into a fistfight, or allowed your car insurance to lapse?
Most people couldn’t handle the simple stuff, and here we are picking nits at Bush, who handled most of the really big stuff quite well.
Not the perfect person, but the one who will keep me and mine alive. I thought GWB was that person. But then I look at the border and my hometown of Los Angeles….
IDK. Look, he wasn’t awesome as in “DUDE” awesome, but he wasn’t awful as in “DUDE” awful either.
Very pro-life.
Strong defense: Made the right call on Iraq’s surge, defended us in Afghanistan, disarmed Libya, has applied pressure on the Iranians and Koreans. Strengthened ties with Eastern Europe.
Good on tax cuts.
Some bad:
immigration,
TARP funding.
IDK some HotAirers here flip out on this guy. Wasn’t the best, wasn’t the worst.
Let us thank him for his service, for protecting us and being a source of strength after 9/11, but let us move forward knowing there is much work to be done.

… and now you people feel the need to destroy bush.
What are you talking about? Bush was the one who decided what he wanted to say for his farewell. He decided to take an issue that so bitterly divided the GOP that it pretty much destroyed the party – by the results of the last election, “destruction” is a pretty apt description. I had thought that no one would rival Bill Clinton’s destruction of Democratic power during his tenure but Bush’s decimation of the GOP made Clinton look like a piker. And all while we’re in a major, and very dangerous, war, too.
Lie about him.
I didn’t lie about him. My inference was right on, as any rational person will admit. Of course, one who intentionally uses the term “immigrants” to divert attention from the fact that it’s “illegal aliens” who are under discussion (and to conflate the two separate issues and confuse people) is a true abuser of language and intellectually dishonest.
Trash him. dig up some quote from some other hated republican from a year and a half ago to connect this to Bush’s comment today.
“Dig up”? Please. We all know that quote. And when Bush referenced amnesty and the “anti-immigrant” attitude of Republicans (“fairly or unfairly” … LOL) he was going back to exactly that time. Blame him. That’s why Bush also said, elsewhere, that he should not have gone after Social Security reform to start his second term but should have tried to shove amnesty down our throats, instead (and, yes, I’m paraphrasing, so don’t get your panties n a bunch).
My God, the truth isn’t something that you care about, is it? Worse than liberals
wise_man on January 12, 2009 at 11:46 PM
Truth is what it’s all about. Show me where I made an untrue statement (not including my bigot inference, since I made it perfectly clear right after that that was my word for Bush’s sentiments). That shouldn’t be too hard for you to do, as I’m supposed to be such a liar.
and now you all want to tear down Bush for the same reasons you had to do the same to mccain.
wise_man on January 12, 2009 at 11:46 PM
Conservatives are supposed to “tear down” liberals like McCain and Bush. I wouldn’t have any interest in politics if not for opposing and eliminating liberalism. There would be no need for conservatives if there were no liberals the same way there would be no need for exterminators if there was no vermin.
The more conservatives tear down Bush now, the less they will have to hear “but, but I didn’t hear you complain when Bush [ insert Bush socialist precedent here ]“. Bush precedent will be used to sell most of the anti-American domestic agenda they are getting ready to shove down our throats.
I will miss this dear well-intentioned man very much.
After 32 years of marriage to the love of my life with whom I often disagree, I want to thank President Bush with all my heart with whom I’ve also disagreed.
My former birthday was Sep 11. It is now THEIR day.
I’ll never forget the Tower jumpers and the anguish, the desperation of asking my husband, “Did we know anyone on that side of the Pentagon..then finding that Barbra Olsen had perished. And a local fellow heroicaly said “Let’s Roll”.
THANK YOU, DEAR PRESIDENT BUSH FOR KEEPING US SAFE ALL THESE YEARS.

I will miss him also because I do believe he has a good heart. That has no bearing on the the major disagreement in policy which I and many others have with him wrt to illegal immigration–a national security issue just as salient as Islamic terrorism.
Here’s hoping that Mexico’s narco-terrorists can be kept out (for the most part) and we are still able to keep saying that at least GWB kept us alive.
Seven Percent Solution on January 13, 2009 at 12:33 AM
Yes, BHO is going to be orders of magnitude worse. I am convinced that the US will not survive Obama, as a nation. That doesn’t chane my opinion about Bush, though. I’d rather have an empty chair in the Oval Office than BHO.
Just the idea that America could come to a point where we’d elect a marxist who was raised in Indonesia to the Presidency is still baffling. How did that happen and who is responsible for letting the left get so out of control like this?
Seven Percent Solution on January 13, 2009 at 12:33 AM
Blind mice, Seven. Libertarian madness. Best of luck to them as each individual Libertarian stands up for what is ‘right’ as the mob charges down the hill. They won’t have enough fingers to point out who is to blame.
Just the idea that America could come to a point where we’d elect a marxist who was raised in Indonesia to the Presidency is still baffling. How did that happen and who is responsible for letting the left get so out of control like this?
It may be useful if a conservative think tank would draw up a point by point plan to counter decades of Saul Alinsky community activism. We can’t simply turn their own methods of undermining the underpinnings of the nation back against them, it would have to be made compatible with conservatism.
Yes, and the courts deserve the blame for most of the long-term deterioration, I think. But it seems to me that there were major changes at ground level, in our society, over the past 5 years that let it go to lunatic levels. Clearly, the credit crisis was the nail in the coffin for the last month running up to the election, but the whole campaign was insane.
I had, for a long time, written a lot of this off to latent shell-shock from 9/11, on a massive scale, but there was also the GOP lying down and never defending itself. To my mind, that display of weakness provoked the massive attack of idiocy from the left, and the sweeping wins they gained. Though that doesn’t explain everything, like Murtha being able to call his constituents bigots and idiots, and still cruise to victory. Weird stuff.
I’m not joking at all. I see a dissolution of the US as a strong possibility, either through a massive amnesty and the effects of it or the destruction of the dollar – both of which BHO is working towards. I’m deadly serious.

People can make up their own minds about what Bush was saying. But his talk of the need for Republican inclusiveness (as if conservative values should be identity-adjusted) made it all very plain.
“Dig up”?
Truth is what it’s all about. Show me where I made an untrue statement (not including my bigot inference, since I made it perfectly clear right after that that was my word for Bush’s sentiments). That shouldn’t be too hard for you to do, as I’m supposed to be such a liar.
